057: From the NFL to Rock Bottom to Unstriving
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by Caleb Campbell, former NFL player, West Point graduate, and now first-time author, to discuss his debut book, Unstriving: 12 Lessons on Authentic Success from a Recovering Overachiever. From a seven-year-old scoring the game-winning touchdown to the height of an NFL career built on a carefully perfected facade, Caleb spent decades believing his worth was measured by his performance. In Unstriving, he shares the journey from a life of endlessly striving to prove himself, to a much harder, much freer way of being.About Caleb Campbell and Unstriving: Caleb Campbell's path took him from a small town in the Texas Panhandle to West Point, and eventually to the NFL, along with a stint representing Team USA. But behind the accolades, Caleb describes a life built entirely on a "survival self," one that could help him achieve, but never let him actually live. A rock-bottom morning surrounded by the aftermath of a night he doesn't remember, and years of quietly hating who he'd become despite his outward success, eventually led him to walk away from professional football and toward a very different definition of a meaningful life.Unstriving is Caleb's account of that unraveling and rebuilding, exploring the difference between striving to make life happen and learning to participate in life's ongoing evolution. In the book, Caleb writes about grief, darkness, and the poet Rilke's own reflections on suffering as unexpected doorways back to a person's own deepest aliveness, arguing that what we're often searching for through achievement has been within us all along.Links:Pre-Order Unstriving available September 22nd Follow Caleb Campbell on Instagram: @caleb_campbellLearn more about Caleb at his website https://www.calebcampbell.me/Follow Allison Trowbridge & Copper Books on InstagramDownload the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

056: Learning to Live Again at 33
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by Ruthie Lindsey, speaker, coach, and author of There I Am, to discuss pain, identity, and the long road back to herself. At 17, Ruthie survived a car accident that broke the top two vertebrae in her neck, an injury doctors say kills or paralyzes almost everyone who has it. Years later, an undiagnosed complication from that accident would leave her bedridden for seven years. In There I Am, Ruthie tells the story of what that pain ultimately opened up in her: not a return to who she was before, but the discovery of who she'd always been underneath the roles, stories, and conditioning she'd taken on to feel worthy of belonging.About Ruthie Lindsey and There I Am: Ruthie Lindsey's accident at 17 left a wire from a spinal fusion surgery undiagnosed in her neck for years, a wire that eventually caused debilitating pain, a reliance on narcotics, the end of her marriage, and the loss of her father, who died suddenly while working to fund the surgery she needed. During the seven years she spent largely bedridden, Ruthie says she found within her pain an unlikely invitation: to unlearn the stories she'd carried since childhood about what made her worthy, and to remember, as she puts it, what had always been good, beautiful, and holy about her simply because she existed. The book's title comes from a moment months into her recovery, dancing alone in her living room to Justin Timberlake on a night she calls "Justin Timberweek," when she caught her reflection in a dark window and thought, "Oh, well, there I am." Today, Ruthie works with clients on shadow work and reconnecting with the body's own yes and no, work she says she couldn't do if she hadn't lived through every part of her own story first.Links:Purchase There I Am at your favorite retailer Follow Ruthie Lindsey on Instagram: @ruthielindsey Follow Allison Trowbridge & Copper Books on InstagramDownload the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

055: Writing a Book When Life Throws You Tragedies
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by Kirbee Miller, author of Nourish: A Guide to Coming Home to Yourself. On New Year's Eve 2018, a phone call changed Kirbee's life forever: a car accident left her mother in a coma and both her mother and stepfather unable to live independently. In the years since, as she became their full-time caregiver while building a career in healthcare tech and, eventually, as an entrepreneur, Kirbee wrote her way back to herself. In Nourish, she offers readers the same tools that helped her: a guided journey of agreements, recipes, journaling, and honest reflection for anyone trying to find their way home to who they really are.About Kirbee Miller and Nourish: Kirbee Miller built a career in biology, chemistry, and healthcare technology before a family tragedy on New Year's Eve 2018 changed the course of her life. A phone call, a coma, and years of caregiving followed, alongside the quiet unraveling of a life she'd built around achievement and compartmentalization. Kirbee found her way back to herself through writing, and eventually through cooking, journaling, and the practices that would become the foundation of Nourish: A Guide to Coming Home to Yourself.Structured as a journey rather than a manual, Nourish opens with a set of personal agreements the reader signs alongside Kirbee, then moves through sections on rebuilding trust with yourself, nourishing your body through recipes (with an accompanying playlist), and guided journaling built around the feelings wheel, a tool for putting honest, specific language to lived experience. In Nourish, Kirbee invites readers who feel like they're "fading away in plain sight" to rediscover what it means to show up for themselves in small, sustainable ways, even in seasons that don't look anything like what they planned.Links:Purchase Nourish at your favorite retailerFollow Kirbee Miller on Instagram and Threads @kirbeeandcoFollow Allison Trowbridge & Copper Books on InstagramDownload the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

054: How It Feels to Publish the Story You Hid for 20 Years
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez, a longtime voice behind some of the biggest names in cultural Christianity, to discuss his memoir, Conversion Therapy Dropout: A Queer Story of Faith and Belonging. For fifteen years, Tim worked behind the scenes helping megachurches build their online presence, all while spending over eight years in conversion therapy trying to change his own sexuality. In Conversion Therapy Dropout, Tim tells the story of finally stepping into the light, reconciling his faith and his sexuality, and discovering that he was fearfully and wonderfully made exactly as he is. His message offers a tender, hard-won reminder that queerness and faith were never meant to be in opposition.About Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez and Conversion Therapy Dropout: Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez spent years as the unseen architect behind some of the biggest platforms in evangelical Christianity, helping churches like Hillsong, Elevation, and Willow Creek build their social media presence, all while quietly wondering if there was a place for him in the very communities he was helping build. After more than eight years in conversion therapy and a breaking point that brought him to the edge, Tim found his way to a community of queer Christians and, eventually, to himself. In Conversion Therapy Dropout, Tim writes not just his own story, but the story of the more than 700,000 people in the United States who have gone through some form of conversion therapy, offering readers the message he wishes he could have given his own 19-year-old self: that he never needed to change who he was to be loved and accepted by God.Links:Purchase Conversion Therapy Dropout at your favorite retailer https://www.conversiontherapydropoutbook.com/#preorderFollow Timothy Schraeder-Rodriguez on Substack https://timothysrodriguez.substack.com/Follow Timothy Schraeder-Rodriguez on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/timothy.s.rodriguez/?hl=enand Download the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

053: What It Feels Like to Finally Come Home to Yourself
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by the iconic Gail Straub, author of eight award-winning books and co-founder of the Empowerment Institute, to discuss her newest release, Home Inside the Globe: Embracing Our Human Family. Gail set out to write a collection of travel essays. Her editor told her otherwise: this was a memoir. In Home Inside the Globe, Gail weaves together thirteen cultures across a lifetime, from India to Russia to the refugee camps of Jordan, into a single, sweeping story about dignity, belonging, and what it means to call the whole world home.About Gail Straub and Home Inside the Globe: Gail Straub has spent decades working across Africa, India, and the Middle East, influencing millions of people through her work in women's empowerment. Home Inside the Globe took her eight years to write and spans her life from age 16 to 75, girl, woman, and crone, organized around a structure that came to her in a dream. At the heart of the book is a story from a refugee camp on the Jordan-Syria border, where a woman who had lost nearly everything asked Gail to carry a message home: that human dignity resides inside us no matter what happens around us, and that the light will always outshine the dark.In Home Inside the Globe, Gail invites readers into a life spent crossing borders, both literal and internal, and makes the case that the more we expose ourselves to people and places different from our own, the more fully human we become.Links:Connect with Gail: https://gailstraub.com/Purchase Home Inside the Globe at your favorite retailer https://bookshop.org/p/books/home-inside-the-globe-embracing-our-human-family-gail-straub/05bfc47d1c287278?ean=9781963827194&affiliate=24496Download the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

052: When Success Stopped Meaning Anything
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by five-time bestselling author Matthew Emerzian, founder of the nonprofit Every Monday Matters, to discuss his new book, Make It Matter. Born out of his own mental health crisis two decades ago, and now built around the Mattering Mindset framework his organization has used for years, Matt's book explores why so many people feel disconnected despite outward success, and offers practical ways to recognize our own worth, strengthen our relationships, and show up for the people around us. About Matthew Emerzian and Make It Matter: Matthew Emerzian spent a decade in the music industry, including a stint as senior vice president of the Kardashian family's music company, before a Monday morning breakdown led to years of anxiety and clinical depression. That collapse, and the healing that followed, became the basis for his first book, Every Monday Matters, and eventually a nonprofit that has reached nearly four million people through school, corporate, and community programs. Make It Matter is the first time Matt has fully unpacked the Mattering Mindset, the framework behind all of that work, walking readers through the "I matter," "you matter," and "we matter" of a life built on values rather than performance. In Make It Matter, Matt calls readers to show up for themselves, for others, at work, and for the world, arguing that mattering, not achievement, is the true measure of a life well lived. The book carries extra weight for Matt personally: it hit shelves the same day his father passed away, a man Matt says modeled the book's message his entire life, simply by making sure the person in front of him always knew they mattered.Links:Purchase Make It Matter at your favorite retailer https://www.matthewemerzian.com/makeitmatterbookLearn more about Every Monday Matters https://www.everymondaymatters.com/Learn more about Matt's speaking work https://www.matthewemerzian.com/Download the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

051: Writing a Book Through Chronic Illness
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by Dr. Lindsay Branham, Emmy-nominated filmmaker, environmental psychologist, and author of Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees, to discuss what it means to heal our severed connection to ourselves and the Earth. Born out of a years-long journey through chronic illness, Lindsay's book invites readers into an embodied, reciprocal relationship with trees, one that asks us to slow down, pay attention, and remember we were never separate from the living world to begin with.About Lindsay Branham and Heartwood: Lindsay Branham's path to Heartwood began when she got sick at the onset of COVID and spent years navigating a chronic illness that eventually forced her to pause her PhD studies at Cambridge. As she searched for healing, she found herself drawn into daily relationship with the trees near her parents' home on the edge of a national forest in Colorado, an experience that ultimately led her to switch her entire doctoral focus to the relationship between humans and the Earth. Heartwood is the result of both that scholarship and that personal healing odyssey, blending scientific rigor with a deeply spiritual, almost mystical account of what it means to let a forest become, as she puts it, a co-author.In Heartwood, Lindsay calls readers into reciprocity, the practice of recognizing the gifts we're given by the living world and asking what we have to give back, whether that's environmental action or simply sitting in front of a tree and offering it our attention. It's an invitation to remember that the Earth itself is a sacred text, and that healing our relationship to it is inseparable from healing ourselves. 050: He Went Lion Tracking to Survive His Divorce. Then He Wrote a Book.
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by David Gerber to discuss his powerful book The Lion Is You. Drawing on years spent tracking lions on foot across the wilds of South Africa, David explores what it means to move through a season of deep darkness, a heartbreaking divorce, and, ultimately, rediscover the wild, alive version of himself that societal conditioning had caged. His message of vulnerability, uncertainty, and radical self-discovery offers a timely reminder that the person we're looking for was never lost. He's just waiting to be found.About David Gerber and The Lion Is You: David Gerber has spent years leading people into the wild, both literally, through lion tracking expeditions in Africa, and personally, through the coaching and speaking work he's built around masculine growth and self-awareness. The Lion Is You is the book that emerged from his own five-year journey through divorce, depression, and a total reconstruction of who he thought he was. Through vivid stories of tracking lions on foot, in territory with no fences and no guarantees, David weaves a narrative that mirrors his own internal journey: we're born wild, we get tamed by life, and the real work is learning how to track our way back to that wild self.In The Lion Is You, David calls readers, especially men, to lean into vulnerability rather than away from it, to trust uncertainty instead of fighting for control, and to remember that the lion, the fullest, most alive version of themselves, has been there all along.Links:Purchase The Lion is You at your favorite retailer https://a.co/d/0dqcYAmhLearn more about David Gerber, including his lion tracking Experiences, at https://www.davidagerber.com/Follow David Gerber on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/davidgerber/Download the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

049: The Superpowers of Writing A Children's Book
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. Today, we're joined by transformational guide and Copper's first-ever children's book author, Lynette Deschler, to discuss her powerful book The Superpowers of You. In The Superpowers of You, Lynette draws on the wisdom of Chinese medicine to help children (and the adults who love them) locate their emotions in their bodies and learn how to transform anger, fear, and frustration into kindness, courage, and love. Born out of her own journey through cancer and a multiple sclerosis diagnosis, her message offers a timely reminder that healing and empowerment are available to all of us, no matter our age or circumstance.About Lynette Deschler and The Superpowers of You: Lynette Deschler has spent years working with elite athletes and everyday clients alike on the deep connection between mind, body, and healing, and The Superpowers of You is the book that grew out of her own hardest season. After two bouts with cancer and a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2020, Lynette went searching for a deeper understanding of her emotional and energetic terrain, work that ultimately became the foundation for this story. Through the character of Albright Owlstein, a wise owl guide, and a cast of animals rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, the book teaches children how to recognize where an emotion lives in their body and how to transform it through breath, sound, and color. In The Superpowers of You, Lynette calls children (and grown-ups) to know themselves, take responsibility for their own healing, and choose kindness, reminding readers that the tools to transform their hardest emotions are already within them.Links:Get Lynette’s book The Super Powers of You https://a.co/d/07SsA7XRFollow Super Powers of You on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/superpowersofyou/You can reach Lynette at the 3 is 1 Foundation [email protected] the Copper Books App: https://author.love/appLearn more about Copper Books: www.copperbooks.comApply to publish with Copper: https://admin.typeform.com/form/zqBcs2sM/create?block=01HRZD9J9B8XV7VDN759VWM2RTFollow Copper Books on Instagram: https://instagram.com/copper.booksFollow Allison Trowbridge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/alliebridge

048: Confronting Self-Doubt with Courage: Simone Knego on “REAL Confidence”
Welcome to Meet the Author, a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today’s most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. On today’s episode, you’ll meet speaker and author Simone Knego, who’s here to discuss her newest book, REAL Confidence: A Simple Guide to Go From Unsure to Unshakable (publishing February 17 with Copper). In this candid conversation with publisher Allison Trowbridge, Simone shares how years of self-doubt became the fuel for a repeatable confidence-building method designed especially for women who feel stuck second-guessing themselves. At the heart of the book is Simone’s practical REAL Method—Respect yourself, Embrace your failures, Ask yourself what you want, and Live without limits—a framework that helps readers build confidence from the inside out. Simone also opens up about the pivotal moment that reshaped how she saw herself: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro—an experience far outside her comfort zone that became a powerful metaphor for the “mountain” each of us is called to climb. Along the way, she and Allison talk about why failure is often just information for the next iteration, how women can reconnect with what they truly want (even after years of prioritizing everyone else), and how changing the way you speak about yourself can change the way you live. This episode is part confidence masterclass, part behind-the-scenes look at publishing—and a reminder that confidence isn’t something you’re born with. On today’s episode, you’ll meet former White House Social Secretary, Deesha Dyer and learn about her memoir, “Undiplomatic,” a deeply personal narrative about combating self-doubt while being on top of the world. Deesha reflects on how imposter syndrome threatened her self-esteem, proven aptitude, and survival until she realized that it was neither her fault nor her responsibility. About Deesha Dyer and “Undiplomatic”: Without credentials or connections, community college student and advocate Deesha Dyer navigated her imposter syndrome, landing one of the most exclusive positions in the White House. Michelle Obama calls “Undiplomatic” “smart, funny, and endlessly inspirational.”From the most unlikely person to end up as a senior official to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama comes a candid, incredible, and inspiring story. Moved by the election of the country’s first Black president, Deesha Dyer applied for a White House internship in 2009 as a thirty-one-year-old part-time community college student, taking a leap that carried her into a permanent full-time position, followed by three promotions landing her at the epicenter of politics. In spite of the little voice in her head telling her she didn’t deserve to be there, Deesha thrived and rose to the highly coveted role of White House social secretary, giving her a front-row seat to defining moments in history while curating some of the flyest parties 1600 Pennsylvania has ever seen.
