What does God see in the people the rest of us have already decided do not belong? How did a movement become an assembly, and how did an assembly become the Church? About eighty years after the crucifixion of Jesus, the Roman governor Pliny the Younger had two enslaved Christian women tortured because he believed their bodies might reveal the movement's secrets. History did not preserve their names. It preserved the question their lives leave behind. In Episode II of Message From the Margins, Father Rich Vitale traces the Church from Jesus and the first disciples through the end of the second century. We enter the homes where Christians gathered, follow the people who carried letters across the Roman world, and discover how worship, leadership, care for the vulnerable, apostolic memory, and plain old human logistics became durable enough to survive another generation.
