Louisiana Trashy Treasure - Scent of Skunkape and Rise of Parlangua
Tonight, we are cooking with the locals! From Baton Rouge writer and director Kaleb Mixon and his company Grunch Road Media, we were blessed with these two punk rock, home-brewed Louisiana cryptic creature features that are definitely worth the watch. The Rise of Parlangua, a bloody biography of a mutant alligator-human, and Scent of Skunkape, an 80s inspired battle of a swamp Sasquatch and the Cajunest man ever seen, had us wheezing. Or maybe that was the herbal enhancement. The Midnight Movie Gumbo duo was even lucky enough to talk to the director himself to hear firsthand how these two gems came into existence. If you enjoy the likings of: early John Waters, the weird B-movies on the low shelves at the video store, Louisiana folklore, and good old fashioned training montages, you'll love this stuff. You can follow Grunch Road Media on Instagram @grunchroadmedia to keep up with their future projects! Blinded Me with Christian Science: Project Dinosaur (2000)
We are back with Season 2 of Gumbo! New house, new studio, new opportunities to piss off prudes. And what better way to ring in our new season than with our favorite guest, Melanie Mann, to discuss good old fashioned Christian propaganda films. Melanie grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household headed by Bob Jones and was homeschooled with their proprietary homeschool curriculum and provides an incredible insight into growing up in a fundamentalist household. Unusual Films and Bob Jones University created a series of “educational” movies with Christ-like life lessons, including today’s feature ‘Project Dinosaur’. Do I hear a new series coming?? Project Dinosaur (2000), directed by evangelist director Tim Rogers, follows a mild-mannered group of young kids as they discover a dinosaur bone and embark on a lesson on creationism, faith, and kindness. In classic after-school-special style, the skeptical “public school educated” Mikey is taught about creationism by his fundie home-schooled pals with almost-funny comedic relief throughout the film and, of course, all of the flaws of science. It’s actually surprisingly watchable and available for free on Youtube and directly on Bob Jone’s website. Take a listen to Melanie and Nellie’s takes on this Y2K hidden gem for atheists who love a good laugh. Thanks for listening to Midnight Movie Gumbo! Nellie B talks about her first movie role
Welcome back sickos were here for a second attempt at this long awaited episode. After some tech malfunction with our first try, we found some luck with this one. A month or so ago Nellie was contacted via Facebook about an acting role. Needless to say we were a bit nervous about responding at first, but took a chance. Shot entirely on an iPhone with a crew of three people movie magic was made. I would best describe the film as drama/suspense shot in southeast louisiana . What these guys were able to do with an iPhone was pretty incredible I must say. They knew what they wanted and didn’t settle until the scenes were just right. Shane’s scene involved a violent encounter that we were nervous would spawn the attention of our neighbors. However the night was a success, and were excited to see the final result. Survive the Night should be available soon on Tube. We will keep everyone posted!Stay hungry sickos / Nellie B and Steven Sane This is a public episode. In case of rapture , this podcast will still be here!
In the spirit of the current state of affairs, we dissect the implications of the religious exploitation genre and the evolution of Rapture movies. Despite its far fetched plot lines, one-dimensional storytelling, and often lack luster quality, they seem to be fairly successful. Where does the line lie between art and propaganda? Where will you be when Jesus comes back? We’re pretty sure we’ll still be here after this episode. Thanks for listening! Boy does this episode go off the rails as things tend to do when Jameson is involved. But who says we have to stay on track , after all this is Midnight Movie Gumbo. The art of Annoyance
We rewatched a few films recently, and couldn’t help but bring them up in this episode. Our ADHD driven podcast tends to go many places at once , and being sick while recording not to mention equipment failure can be quite annoying. So why not bring up a few characters that did such an outstanding job at being annoying to watch. These are not bad performances , but very effective at pissing us off. Which actors do our listeners have in mind that you can’t watch them in anything based on one performance, Be sure to comment , and we’ll mention you in our next episode. Thanks for listening to MMG podcast, and share it with your friends if you like!Cheers , Nell / Steve This is a public episode. Midnight Movie Cumbo
We’re getting steamy tonight folks, and having a blast with this topic. The 1970s brought us the detective XXX features of John Holmes , and the beauty of Linda Lovelace in Deep Throat. Through the years the adult films would add their spin to several Hollywood Cl-Ass-ics , and go on to show us that nothing is sacred from a XXX remake. Finally…..adult features that we can watch from beginning to end, and not feel the need to fast forward to just the sex. From the big budget Pirates Of the Caribbean , Scooby Doo, Forrest Hump, Nutbusters, to the rock n roll of (Steves) favorite musical Grease starring the lovely Riley Reid as Sandy with her stud Seth Gamble as Danny , this episode is full of laughs that we could HARDly get through itWe hope you have as much fun listening to our ADHD charged dialogue as we had making it for you . TerrorVision (1986)
Just a story of your all American, dysfunctional family. Swinger parents, doomsday prep paw paw, a punk rock teenager, and a kid with a knack for modern warfare take on a threat unlike anything anyone on Earth has witnessed. A space cat, apparently. This campy 80s science fiction comedy, directed by Ted Nicolaou, is everything 1980s and has some great examples of the golden age of practical effects, when even flops had something to work with. Stacy (2001)
I dare you to name something better than zombie schoolgirls. This gory, fun homage to American horror legend George Romero is a Japanese hidden gem directed by Naoyuki Tomomatsu. A strange virus infects the world’s teenage girls and one girl, doomed to die and reanimate into a bloodthirsty ghoul, finds friendship in her last days. It’s full of iconic characters, nods to classic zombie movies, and loads and loads of gratuitous violence and guts. Slay: Queer Horror
Special guest Melanie Mann, LCSW (Congratulations homie!) joins us on a deep discussion of queerness and horror. From iconic examples of a queer experience in film to what draws us to horror as queer people ourselves. Movies like Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser, and Jennifer’s Body are only some of the several keystones in our first collisions of horror and the queer experience. The Greasy Strangler (2016)
Our first guest, Melanie Mann, LMSW, joins us on The Greasy Strangler, an outrageous gross-out slasher that’s definitely…never been done before. But perhaps, there is a deeper meaning to this raunchy, awkward horror comedy. The Greasy Strangler is available on Amazon Prime. This is a public episode.
