Rhys Crosswell, Trail / Ultra Running Coach and Educator
Rhys Crosswell (in his own words): As a coach I want to inspire and educate people on how to become the best they can and encourage people to push themselves to limits they may not consider possible. I love running and the places, both mental and physical, it takes you. In my opinion Ultra-running dismantles all stereotypes. You should never underestimate the person you see on the start line of an ultra, nor should you judge them on their physique, age, gender, or the type of gear they wear. In my experience Ultra-runners have the mental fortitude to concur mountains, and rediscover limits and with the right guidance, there is no stopping us. As a husband and father to a toddler, I know how precious time is, therefore I endeavour to work efficiently and effectively with my athletes, so they can reach their goals within the parameters they are working. In doing so it most importantly must be enjoyable, fulfilling and freeing. As an athlete, I have always had running in my life one way or another. As a school kid I was always involved in athletics and cross country. Growing up I was very active in team sports and surfing, skiing and snowboarding. Being from New Zealand and growing up in the lower south island, mountains and adventure were very easy to come by! I went through a long journey in my late 20's with chronic lower back pain, I thought my running days were gone but once I saw Kate from Endurance Movement I managed to get in the best shape of my life. After getting back into running competitively, I found the ultra distance and fell in love with it. I have competed in the 50-130km distance but most of my ultra running has been done on self curated adventures. I love finding a trail or particular goal and organising the adventure myself as it is extremely satisfying. As well as working as a trail and ultra coach I also work in education. I had a brief spell at university studying behavioral science but changed and became qualified as a special needs education assistant specialising in children with autism. My love of the outdoors and passion for kids to spend as much of there time learning outside has lead me to my current role of running a specialised learning program at a primary school managing a Kitchen Garden project. I teach the students to grow and cultivate their own produce and then cook healthy nutritious recipes in the kitchen. FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 42:22 You Don’t Need Technology to Move
Labrador Lesson for 10-20-22: The Labs once again asked Ben to be their spokesperson to tell you a dog is a part of your family. Check out the video, or just read their wise words. You don’t need technology to move. As Labradors, we make movement part of our lifestyle. All we need for our daily walks are collars, leashes, and a willing human. We understand that you humans love technology, but technology is NOT essential for movement. As Labs, we don’t have Strava accounts, and we don’t track our macros in MyFitnessPal or LoseIt. But we DO move on a regular basis and eat high-quality food. Whether you have 2 legs or 4, remember you don’t need technology to move. If you like to track (and share) your movement sessions and your food log, that’s great, but if you’d rather keep your movement sessions to yourself, that’s great too. And if you experience a technical glitch, and your movement session isn’t recorded by Strava…it still counts!!! So move more. Move often. And remember, you don’t need technology to make movement part of your lifestyle. Visit www.FitLabPGH.com for tips, hacks, and podcasts to help you get moving and keep moving through 2022! FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 41:22 Dogs Are Not Accoutrements
Labrador Lesson for 10/13/22: Dogs are not accoutrements. The Labs once again asked Ben to be their spokesperson to tell you a dog is a part of your family. Check out the video, or just read their wise words. When you take your dog for a walk/run/hike, remember to take into account your dog’s needs. A Movement session with a dog is NOT all about you. Engage with your dog. Let the dog set the pace. If your dog loves to walk in the rain, you are going to get wet. You won’t melt. Move More. Move Often. Move with your dogs. FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 40:22 Be Proactive About Your Health
Labrador Lesson for 10/6/22: Be proactive about your health. The Labs wanted to talk about being proactive about creating a healthy lifestyle. They asked Ben to help out with the lesson…check out the video…or just read along for the essentials. Get your annual exam and recommended shots from your vet/doctor. If you have a cut, sprain, or other injury, consult a qualified medical professional. Eat real food. Move on a regular basis. The Labs prefer moving on most days to longer, “crush it” movement sessions on the weekends. Take home message: keep it simple, but be proactive – eat real food; move more; and visit a medical professional when needed. FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 39:22 Dog Walk Essentials
Labrador Lesson for 9/29/22: Dog Walk Essentials. The Labs wanted to share the essentials for a safe, fun dog walk. They asked Ben to help out with the lesson…check out the video…or just read along for the essentials. The most essential element is an engaged human, who is focused on the dogs! After that, the labs suggest you include the following items: 1. A stylish collar (the labs like climbing rope). 2. A sturdy, colorful leash (again, climbing rope is great). 3. Snacks (depending on distance/duration). 4. Water (depending on temperature). 5. A First Aid Kit. The Labs believe in making movement a lifestyle, so, whether you have 2 legs or 4, gather the essentials, get outside, and get moving. Comfort Tips for Chilly Cycling – a Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast: Comfort Tips for Chilly Cycling. Yes, Spring is coming, but in Western PA, there is still plenty of chilly weather ahead before we start talking about Summer Survival Tips. We encourage you to find movement activities you enjoy, then take steps so you can enjoy those activities year-round. Listen to the audio, or watch the video below to check out Ben’s Tōwmak drop bar fat bike from Bearclaw Bicycle Co. Our first tip for cold weather cycling: choose a route that’s out of the wind if possible. Our ideal cold-weather ride is in the woods…BUT if the trails are muddy, we stay clear to preserve future trail conditions. Next tip: Keep your hands and feet warm. Ben uses flat pedals and wears mountain bike shoes (these are from Ride Concepts) on his fat bike in the winter; if he gets TOO cold, he can jog and push the bike! He wears wool socks and toe caps from Aero Tech Designs. For hands, Ben wears 45nrth insulated gloves for colder conditions, and swaps them for lighter gloves from Handup or Aero Tech Designs when he warms up. Side note: If it’s below 40 degrees, Lisa wears the warmest gloves that 45nrth makes. When it drops below 30 degrees, we put pogies (bar mitts) on the bikes for extra hand comfort. Final tip: LAYERS, ideally wool layers. On the day of the video, Ben wore Pearl Izumi soft shell tights over Pearl Izumi bib shorts. On top, Ben wore a wool baselayer from Rapha; a wool jersey from Pearl Izumi; a vest; and the 45nrth Naughtvind cycling jacket (check out our review of the jacket, released 2-23-22). Bonus tip: Don’t forget the head and neck! Ben likes the neck gaiters from Buff, and a Smartwool 2-layer wool hat under his bike helmet. Take home message: if you adapt your route, and dress for conditions, you can enjoy moving outside in rain, snow, or summer sun. So get outside…and move more. Why We Leash the Labradors – a Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast: Why Do We Leash the Labradors? People who follow FitLabPGH may wonder why the Labs are “always” leashed. First, we’ll note that the Labs spend the vast majority of their lives off leash, at home or in the fenced-in backyard. But if you see us in public, you’ll see Leashed Labradors. Here are the reasons why. Listen to the audio, or watch the video below to see the Labs enjoyed a leashed hike. #1 – It’s the law. If you see us on the Montour Trail, in Mingo Creek Park, or in South Park, we’ll be obeying the Leash Laws. We know, many people don’t…but we do. #2 – We want to keep the Labs with us. Yes, they’re well-behaved dogs. No, they’re not immune to the temptation of sights and sounds of nature. Chasing a squirrel or rabbit could lead to a lost dog…or worse if the chase leads into the path of an oncoming car… #3 – We want to keep the Labs safe. In addition to the risks covered by Reason #2, if the dogs stray even a little off the trail, they’re at increased risk of injury from technical terrain, from eating something they shouldn’t, or from an encounter with another animal. #4 – To avoid being a jerk. Not every trail or park user wants a close encounter with a dog…even if that dog is a Labrador. And EVERY one should be able to get outside and enjoy moving in nature. So we leash the Labs, and shorten the leashes when we pass other people. Because it’s not ALL about us. Take home message: we enjoy making movement part of our lifestyle, and part of the Labrador Lifestyle…and we want to continue moving safely with the Labs in the future. So get outside…leash your dogs…be safe…and move more. Then visit www.FitLabPGH.com for tips, hacks, and podcasts to help you keep moving throughout 2022. Share Tweet Share

Bearclaw Bicycle Co. Tōwmak Review – a Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast: Bearclaw Bicycle Co. Tōwmak Review We encourage everyone to make movement a lifestyle…one of the ways we make movement a lifestyle is by obtaining the tools and toys to allow us to Move More year-round. Ben’s goal in purchasing the Tōwmak titanium drop-bar fat bike from Bearclaw Bicycle Co. was to get a bike that he could ride anywhere he’d ride a gravel bike…plus places he would be nervous to ride a gravel bike…also, he wanted a bike that would put a smile on his face. Specifically, he was looking for a bike to ride on farm roads, gravel roads, single-track trails, and horse trails (many of which have been torn up by the horses). We recorded this video after Ben spent 6 weeks with the Tōwmak; he likes it even more a month later. Listen to the audio, or watch the video below to get a good look at the Tōwmak. About the bike: The frame is the titanium Tōwmak frame from Bearclaw Bicycle Co. (www.BearclawBicycleCo.com). After speaking with Dustin at Bearclaw, Ben used www.BikeInsights.com to choose the correct frame size (55.5cm). For reference purposes: Ben’s Salsa Cycles bikes have 57cm frames. The drop-bar handlebars are the Redshift Kitchen Sink Handlebar. (www.RedShiftSports.com) and the bar-end shifter is the GX 1×12 shifter from Gevenalle (www.gevenalle.com) Ben contacted Mike Curiak of Lace Mine 29 (www.LaceMine29.com) to build the wheelset: Bontrager Jackalope 26” Fat Rims; DT Swiss Big Ride 6-bolt disc hubs; DT Swiss SuperComp triple butted spokes; and DT Swiss Prolock nips. Ben sourced the Schwalbe Jumbo Jim tires, which are set up as tubeless. The fork is a titanium form from Bearclaw Bicycle Co. The saddle is a Brooks C15, which Ben uses on all of his bikes…because it’s comfortable. The top cap cage mount and the bottle cages are from King Cage (www.kingcage.com) made in the USA in Durango, CO. The brakes are Yokozuna Ultimo cable-activated hydraulic brakes…in part because they were available…in part because cables are a lot easier to repair in the middle of a bikepacking trip than hydraulic. Last, but not least, the flat pedals are the Catalyst Pedal from Pedaling Innovations, and are ready for winter riding in mtb shoes or boots. Come summer, Ben will switch to clipless pedals and Lake Cycling shoes. Bottom line: if you’re looking for a reliable bike that you can ride anywhere…with a smile on your face…the Tōwmak by Bearclaw Bicycle Co. may be the bike for you. It’s a gravel bike that you can ride like a mountain bike…and it’s forgiving if / when you pick a bad line. Most important: Ben loves to ride it. Find tools (and toys) that allow you to just move…and to move more…year-round. Then visit www.FitLabPGH.com for tips, hacks, and podcasts to help you keep moving throughout 2022. Share Tweet Share

Do’s and Don’ts for Moving in 2022 – a Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast: Do’s and Don’ts for Moving in 2022. We encourage everyone to make movement a lifestyle…this year and every year! Whether you’re just starting a movement routine or you’re already a lifetime mover, here are 5 tips for an enjoyable, and SAFE, movement practice (for you…and for those around you). Listen to the audio or watch the video below to enjoy the Labradors making movement part of their lifestyle. * DO: Just Move. Your movement practice doesn’t need to be complicated, scheduled, or trending on social media. Take a walk. Ride your bike. Dance in your living room. Just Move. * DON’T Put Yourself in Dangerous Situations. Just because you CAN try an extreme sport or ride your bike on a busy road, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Stay safe today, so that you can keep moving tomorrow. * DO: Make Movement a Priority. Life is busy. Schedule time for regular movement. * DON’T Be a Jerk. Translation: It’s not ALL about you. Share the trail (or gym equipment). Leash your dog in public spaces. Do your best to allow other movers to enjoy their movement experience. * DO: Be adaptable. You may not have time to do your fantasy workout. Your fitness class may have been canceled. Adapt. Find something you CAN do to keep moving. Take home message: find ways to include safe and fun movement in your lifestyle today, and you will look forward to making movement part of your lifestyle in the future. So just move…be safe…and move more. Check out the FitLabPGH Movement Tips and Lifestyle Hacks videos every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for tips and hacks to help you, and your dog(s) move more…move better…and stay safe…throughout 2022. Fat Bikes…They’re Not Just for Winter – FitLabPGH Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast: Fat Bikes…They’re Not Just for Winter. Perhaps you’ve seen someone riding a fat bike in the snow…or an electric fat bike (eBike) on a local trail…today we’re sharing a few pros and cons of fat bikes to help you decide if a fat bike would be a good addition to your bicycle line-up. Listen to the audio, or watch the video and check out our Mukluk fat bikes from Salsa Cycles. Starting with the disadvantages…1) Fat bikes are heavy…this is especially noticeable when loading them on to a bike rack. 2) Fat bikes are slower than your other bike(s)…big, knobby tires = plenty of rolling resistance. 3) Climbing hills is more challenging on a heavier bike…this is true whether you’re riding or pushing your bike up a hill. Now for the advantages…1) Fat bikes are fun! 2) You can ride them on almost any terrain (just check local laws and trail rules to be sure bikes are allowed) from paved paths, to rails-to-trails, to mountain bike trails, to gravel or rutted roads. 3) Large, knobby tires provide traction, cushioning…and confidence, allowing riders of varying abilities to enjoy riding together. Note: a fat bike gave Lisa the confidence to venture off the rails-to-trails and into the woods with Ben. Take home message: fat bikes allow you to ride almost anywhere…at almost any time of the year. If you have a chance to try one, take it! And if you’re looking for a fun cycling experience, and you’re not too concerned with speed, perhaps there’s a fat bike in your future. So be safe, move more, and get on your bike and ride. Tips for Making Your Dogs Part of Your Active Lifestyle – FitLabPGH Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast providing tips for making your dog(s) part of your active lifestyle. If you are looking for individual advice on dog health and nutrition, we STRONGLY encourage you to consult your veterinarian. Listen to the audio, or enjoy the Labradors in the video podcast. Our goal is to include our dogs in our active lifestyle…throughout their lifespan. That means that our movement practice is NOT all about us…we need to make choices to keep the dogs healthy and safe. Tip 1: Create an active lifestyle for your dogs. Take them for walks or runs. Give them time and space for doggy play. And help them maintain a healthy weight. Active dogs at a healthy weight are less likely to get injured than dogs carrying extra weight. Yes, this means monitoring food and treats to prevent overeating (or undereating). Dogs do not know how much food they need. Ask your vet for advice. Side note: the Labs love the pumpkin treats from Portland Pet Food Company. We split 1 treat into 6 pieces, and each dog thinks she’s getting 3 treats! Tip 2: Don’t overwork the dogs. This is year-round advice, but it is especially important on hot summer days. We get out early, seek shade and soft surfaces, let the dogs set the pace, and make frequent water stops. Maggie is a water snob and only Berkey Filters filtered water in her Nalgene bottle makes a walk complete. Tip 3: Let the dogs set the pace. Once you get a dog, your movement practice is no longer ALL about you. We’ve all seen a reluctant dog being dragged along by a focused runner…PLEASE don’t be that dog owner. Tip 4: Start slowly when introducing your dog to a new movement practice. Whether you have a puppy or a dog who isn’t used to regular movement, start slowly, and gradually build up to a longer movement routine. Side note: don’t “GO Hard” or “Crush It” every day. Listen to your dog, and watch for signs of heat stress or overwork. Include active recovery days in your dog’s routine…remember, the goal is to create a movement routine that your dog can enjoy throughout its lifespan. Take home message: get outside, and enjoy moving with your dog. While you may sacrifice a bit of fitness to make your dog part of your movement lifestyle, the mental health and quality of life rewards provided by your dog make the “sacrifice” worthwhile. Check out the FitLabPGH Movement Tips and Lifestyle Hacks videos every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for tips and hacks to help you, and your dog(s) move more…move better…and stay safe…throughout 2021. Snacks That Keep Us Moving – FitLabPGH Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast providing a look inside the FitLabPGH Snack Bin. This is what WE use to fuel our 60-90+ minute movement sessions…primarily hiking, biking, and running. If you are looking for individual advice on nutrition and food choices, we STRONGLY encourage you to consult a registered dietician. Listen to the audio, or enjoy the Labradors and cats in the video podcast. What is Ben looking for in a movement snack? It should be able to be stored in a pocket or pack; it is approximately 100 calories; and it doesn’t upset his stomach. For Ben, that means no stevia, monk fruit extract, or sugar alcohols. Everyone’s body is different. Experiment to find what works for you. When in doubt? Consult a registered dietician. The goal is to get outside, enjoy moving, and avoid the dreaded mid-workout bonk/crash/insert your favorite term here. So here’s the current inventory of our Snack Bin: * Baby food – pear, mango, spinach (Lisa has not endorsed this option) * Mini Clif Bars – chocolate chip or crunchy peanut butter * Whole Wheat Fig Bars from Nuts.com (individually wrapped for convenience) * Trail Mix – make your own, or head to Trader Joe’s * Sport Beans (Lisa’s favorite cycling snack). Want to save money? Buy Jelly Belly jelly beans * Honey Stinger mini waffles (warning: they may crumble in a pocket or pack) * Skratch Labs Energy Chews – Sour Cherry (2 “warnings” – they contain caffeine and they get sticky when temps get too warm) * Papa Steve’s No Junk Raw Protein Bars – vegan and whey protein options, many flavors, all “real food” ingredients * Infinit Nutrition Performance Coffee Cold Brew protein powder, a.k.a., protein for coffee lovers Take home message: get outside, enjoy moving, and pack snacks to fuel your movement session. Even if you’re planning a fairly short session, be prepared…you never know when a hike or bike ride might become an outdoor adventure. Kelly Kuhn Physical Therapist talks about running injuries & common training errors
FitLabPGH recently did a Facebook Live with Kelly Kuhn, MPT, CSCS, PES, Cert-TMD, Cert-MST. We talked about running injuries and common training errors. Below is a link to a a video, or listen along, just like a normal podcast If you don’t know Kellie– (in her own words): I became a physical therapist and a CSCS almost 18 years ago because I was an athlete and wanted to work with athletes. I started my career in Florida, my home state, working with athletes. Over time I began to work more with every day pain and injuries as well and realized that the same “athlete” principals apply to everyone. But, I also really began to focus on running as my way to stay connected to the athletic population. I just love getting people moving and back to what they love doing no matter what it is and feel that changing the way we look at and approach pain, movement and exercise can have major benefits to our overall well-being. Winter Pack for Hiking- FitLabPGH video podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast providing a look inside Ben’s winter hiking backpack. This is what we carry on a 1-3 hour hike…in the winter…with Labradors. The goal is to get outside, enjoy moving, and get home safely…even if something goes wrong. Listen to the audio, or enjoy the Labradors and cats in the video podcast Safety first: before your hike, let someone know where you’re going, and when you plan to return…especially if you’ll be in an area with limited or no cell phone coverage. Hydration is important! In the summer, we may opt for an USWE Pack with a hydration bladder, but if freezing fluids is a risk, go for an insulated water bottle. Looking for extra calories to fuel your hike? Consider adding maple syrup or honey to your water (or tea). Ben’s current winter pack is from MHM Gear in Colorado www.mhmgear.com – it’s the Switch 26 (26 liter). First in the pack: a snack. This is personal preference. Ben opts for mini Clif Bars and gel packs of fruit and veggie baby food…don’t judge. Although Lisa’s never seen him use it, Ben also carries a monocular for wildlife viewing. The outer pockets of the pack hold a collapsible hiking pole (because we don’t have 4-Paw Drive like the Labs to handle slippery or unstable trails) and a second (lighter) pair of wool gloves. After Ben warms up, he stashes his winter mittens or gloves, and puts on the lighter pair from the pack. Now we enter the “Just in Case” or “Emergency” section of the pack. A waterproof, foldable jacket. First aid kits for humans and dogs. Looking for an Adventure Emergency Kit that comes in a waterproof tube complete with flashlight and compass? Check out www.VSSLgear.com (they also make a coffee kit and a flask kit). For a true canine emergency, Ben carries a Fido Pro Airlift that allows you to carry a dog in a sling across your hips…we hope we NEVER need to use it. For milder canine emergencies (like a torn dew claw), Ben carries dog boots and an extra leash. A whistle is always a good safety idea…along with an extra hat, neck gaiter, socks, and a spare pair of glasses. If you fall in a stream, you may be really thankful for dry socks! At the bottom of the pack, Ben keeps a knife and a small pair of loppers…you never know when you might need a tool to extricate yourself, or your companion, from underbrush or a pricker bush. Take home message: get outside, enjoy moving, and return home safely…so that you can continue to make movement part of your lifestyle. Video Podcast- Find Ways to Move More
Today’s FitLabPGH podcast release is a repost video podcast challenging you to find ways to Move More. We are almost 11 months into the pandemic…this was recorded during the last PA order to close all gyms and fitness facilities…while your facility may now be open…you may not be comfortable attending in person classes. If your favorite forms of movement are temporarily unavailable, there are MANY ways to keep moving…and we’re here to suggest a few options. We recommend the video below, but if you are an audio listener the info is also available via audio. Tip 1: Walk your Labradors…No Labradors in your life? Why not??? (Just kidding). If you don’t have a dog to walk, walk anyway…perhaps with your kids, or a friend, or your cat… Not a fan of walking? Try something else! Need inspiration? Check our podcast and movement tips archives at www.FitLabPGH.com for ideas. Tip 2: Phone a Friend… Ask a friend and/or accountability partner for movement ideas…perhaps you can even join each other in a virtual fitness challenge. Ben’s friend challenged him to a virtual cycling challenge…which somehow resulted in a pair of new bikes for Lisa! Tip 3: Ask your Gym for Help. Many gyms and fitness facilities are still offering virtual classes. Looking for something more individualized? Ask about virtual personal training or for a home workout plan. Tip 4: Make the gym PART of your movement practice…and look for other ways to add movement to your life. Even a short walk can be an excellent addition to your structured workouts…speaking of walking…consider walking when you’re on a non-Zoom work call. If you take that work call outside, be sure to be aware of your surroundings…stay safe! Take home message: the pandemic sucks…but can you find the positive in a tough time? Maybe the positive is that this is the time you find ways to Move More…which MAY make you calmer, and improve your ability to rest…and to concentrate…added bonus: by making movement part of your lifestyle, you may serve as a positive role model for those around you. FitLabPGH Video Podcast – Apollo Neuro Review
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast offering Ben’s 1-month review of the Apollo Neuro, a “wearable wellness device for stress relief.” The Apollo Neuro, developed in Pittsburgh, uses touch therapy, felt as waves of vibration, to trigger a parasympathetic nervous system response. With consistent use, the Apollo Neuro may retrain the nervous system to manage stress more efficiently. The device may be used on the wrist or the ankle. You can listen to the audio, but we think you’ll enjoy the video For more on the science behind the device, and information on purchasing, visit www.apolloneuro.com Note: this is not a sponsored post. Ben purchased the product at retail price, and he has been using it for 1.5 – 3 hours a day for approximately a month. Overall score: 4.75 out of 5 stars. The only negatives for Ben: 1) the feeling of vibration on the leg reminds Ben of sciatic nerve symptoms, so he doesn’t want to try the ankle strap; and 2) neither Ben nor Puddin the Yellow Lab like the feeling of vibration while trying to sleep, so he hasn’t made use of the “Sleep and Renew” mode. Now, on to the positives. Ben is pleased with the battery life and the ease of charging the battery via a USB cord that comes with the device. When awake, the vibration on the wrist does not bother Ben. The Apollo Neuro includes access to the Apollo Neuro App (Apple and Android), which offers 7 curated modes (patterns of vibration): Energy & Wake-Up; Social & Open; Clear & Focused; Rebuild & Recover; Meditation & Mindfulness; Relax & Unwind; Sleep & Renew. You choose the mode based on how you want to feel. The results (as seen through the Oura Ring): Average nightly sleep has increased by 13 minutes. Resting heart rate is down by 2 beats per minute. HRV (heart rate variability) is up slightly (that’s a good thing). And morning readiness (according to the Oura Ring) is up by 5 points. Also, and this may be the power of suggestion…or the placebo effect…but Ben feels more focused after using the “Clear & Focused” pattern, and more energized after using the “Rebuild & Recover” pattern following a workout. The Apollo Neuro is not cheap…but it DOES fall into the “making an investment in your health” category. Take home message: the Apollo Neuro is a another tool for Ben’s health toolbox…designed to improve stress management, allowing him to sleep better, perform better, and make movement part of his lifestyle. Paul Thompson- Masters Runner
Paul Thompson (in his own words): I’ve been a serious runner – some might say obsessive – for many years. My early running years were in the United Kingdom where I grew up, running for traditional harriers clubs in the Midlands, South London and West Yorkshire and representing town, county and region. I spent several years living and running in South East Asia and then moved to New York in 2004. A year later, I turned 40. I have consistently been the top masters’ runner in the New York area and often ranked as one of the top masters runners in the US by Running Times and UK by Athletics Weekly. And in November 2016 I won a gold medal in the half marathon for M50-54 at the World Masters Athletics Championships. At the 2018 champs I got silver in the same event. My goal is simple but immensely challenging: to slow the aging process by staying as fast as possible for as long as possible. Winter Workout Gear from Head to Toe- a Video Podcast
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast to help you keep moving outside through the winter…with a guide for winter workout gear to keep you comfortable from head to toe. If your extremities are cold, you are unlikely to enjoy your outdoor movement session…and you may even be putting yourself at risk of frostbite or hypothermia. You can listen to the audio, but we think you’ll enjoy the video, so sit back, watch, and then put on the appropriate gear, and opt outside! First tip: Your Mom was right…you SHOULD wear a hat when it’s cold outside! If it’s just chilly, you can get away with choosing a hat for fit or fashion…like the synthetic Sweatvac beanie that Ben likes to wear under his bike helmet. When chilly becomes cold, Ben switches to wool. His favorite lightweight wool hats are from Smartwool and Voormi (the Dual SURFACE precision blend beanie). For the coldest days, Ben swaps the lightweight wool for a heavier blend, like the SURFACE HARDENED thermal wool precision blend beanie from Voormi. Still cold? Put your jacket hood up over your hat. Tip 2: the neck…a positive takeaway from the pandemic? Ben discovered he likes wearing a neck gaiter year-round. For warm to chilly days, Ben likes a synthetic gaiter that wicks sweat when it’s hot, and keeps your neck warm when a chilly wind picks up. Shown in the video: “Year of the Coronavirus” neck gaiter from Carson Footwear. Double up the gaiter, and it doubles as a face mask. When temperatures get colder, Ben once again opts for wool. A couple of brands of wool neck gaiters to try? Buff and Smartwool. Tip 3: the hands…if your hands are freezing, you’re likely to throw in the workout towel. We recommend having a range of gloves…and possibly mittens…available to keep your hands happy. On chilly days, Ben likes the wool gloves from DeFeet…bonus: when it gets colder, the DeFeet gloves make good liners under heavier gloves or mittens. A couple of bike glove recommendations: for cold rides, check out Aero Tech Designs (a Pittsburgh company); for REALLY cold days, consider the Sturmfist 5 from 45 Nrth. Note: nothing from 45 Nrth is cheap, but if you’re looking for durable, cold weather cycling gear, it’s the best we’ve tried. Second note: Lisa’s hands get cold when temps drop below 60 degrees…how does she hike with the Labs through the winter? With liner gloves, AND MITTENS, AND handwarmers in the warmer pockets of the mittens! Tip 4: finally, socks are the final piece of today’s puzzle. If it’s above 50 degrees, select the synthetic sock that speaks to you. Ben is a fan of DeFeet. Bet you can guess what Ben chooses when temps get chilly? Yep, wool…lightweight wool socks we’ve enjoyed come from CloudLine, Stance, and DeFeet. Ben’s favorite heavyweight wool socks come from Darn Tough. Take home message: build a wardrobe of hats, gaiters, gloves, and socks that will keep you moving…comfortably, and safely, throughout the winter. FitLabPGH Video Podcast: Are You Measuring Heart Rate When You Move?
This week’s FitLabPGH Podcast release is a video podcast to help you meet your health goals for 2021 and beyond. We have included the audio only link, but encourage you to check out the video. If one of your goals is to improve (or monitor) your fitness level, consider adding a Heart Rate Monitor to your movement routine. Tracking distance and pace of your movement sessions may not paint a complete picture…to gauge exercise intensity over a variety of routes and forms of exercise, a Heart Rate Monitor is an excellent tool. It’s January, so your social media feed is full of people telling you how to “CRUSH” your workouts…but if overall health / longevity is your goal, those intense workouts should be a small part of your overall movement routine. A heart rate monitor can tell you when you’re working “hard enough,” but it can also tell you when you should focus on recovery. A morning check of your resting heart rate may help you monitor your body’s readiness…when your resting hear rate is elevated, consider rest or active recovery. For most people looking for overall fitness, the bulk of our movement time should be spent in Heart Rate Zones 1 or 2 (not “crushing” it). NOTE: BEFORE you begin a new training program, consult a qualified professional. There are many options for Heart Rate Monitors. Perhaps the “easiest” way to start monitoring your heart rate is with a GPS fitness watch (that you may already own). Ben and Lisa both wear COROS watches; popular brands include Garmin, Polar, and Suunto. While the watches offer a convenient way to track heart rate, they aren’t always accurate…especially if your activity includes a lot of wrist movement or gripping. The MOST accurate way to measure heart rate (outside of a clinical setting) is with a chest strap like the Polar H10 or the chest strap from Wahoo, shown in the video. The downside of the chest strap? Not everyone enjoys lifting up his/her shirt and affixing a damp chest strap at the start of a workout (the monitor should be damp to increase conductivity and improve accuracy)…especially if it’s winter…and you’re exercising outside… A great option that offers accuracy AND convenience? The mioPOD; it’s worn on the arm and is easy to set-up and use (see www.mio-labs.com for more info). Ben loves his MioPod, for its battery life, convenient charging port, and ability to pair with his COROS watch and Strava. Another fun feature of the MioPod? If you use the Mio App, you can program the strap to display colors corresponding to each heart rate zone, so that you can easily monitor your heart rate during your movement session. For more information on Heart Rate Monitors and Heart Rate Training, look for a pair of recent interviews from our sister podcast Moving2Live featuring Don Moxley, Applied Sports Scientist (released 12/16/20), and Marcelo Aller, CSCS, of Mio Labs (released 1/6/21). Take home message: long-term health has more to do with consistent movement than with “crushing” this week’s workouts…but whatever your fitness goals, a heart rate monitor may help you measure your progress Contact Info for FitLabPGH: Email: [email protected] Twitter: @fitlabpgh Instagram: @fitlabpgh We update via Facebook too!! Video Podcast: Healthy Feet Help You Move More
This week’s release from FitLabPGH is a video podcast designed to help you step on the path to healthy, happy feet…because healthy feet help you move more. We’ve talked about healthy feet…and healthy footwear…before…and our sister podcast Moving2Live has several episodes worth checking out on the subject…including: -Our 2-part interview with Dr. Ray McClanahan, DPM, Natural Podiatrist and inventor of CorrectToes (released 3/13/19 and 3/27/19) -3 episodes featuring Dr. Samantha Wood, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS…physical therapist, ultra runner, Spartan competitor, and more (released 9/27/17, 10/11/17, and 7/17/19). Check out the interviews at www.Moving2Live.com for useful foot health information. If you have foot pain or an injury, PLEASE consult a qualified professional…but if you’re just looking for some general foot health tips…we have a few for you in this video. Tip 1: Be aware of your calluses….and find the balance between protection and pain. Too little callus…risk of blisters…too thick callus…risk of pain. A google search for “callus remover” will provide a plethora of DIY options…but use caution, and common sense, and consult a podiatrist if necessary. Tip 2: Spend time barefoot…or in minimal footwear, like a pair of Bedrock Sandals. https://bedrocksandals.com Tip 3: Spread Your Toes. Tip 3(a): Consider Vibram Five Fingers…in moderation…to let toes work independently. Tip 3(b): Consider ToeSocks. Ben is a fan of the wool ToeSocks from Injinji. They let toes splay and work independently…and you can use them with your existing shoes. Tip 3(c): Consider CorrectToes…with or without shoes…over time, they may reverse the effects of cramped footwear. https://www.correcttoes.com Tip 4: Avoid uncomfortable shoes! For Ben, that means Altra Running shoes for longer trail runs/hikes…usually the Lone Peak or Timp…for shorter hikes, casual walking, and balance play, that means Carson Footwear. Ben is a Carson Footwear ambassador. Use coupon code CFA202018Ben for 15% off your purchase at www.CarsonFootwear.com. Ben’s latest hack to his Carson Footwear shoes? The addition of their rock plate insert for a little more protection/stability on rocky trails. https://www.carsonfootwear.com Take home message: If your feet hurt, you’re not likely to move…so take steps toward healthy feet…but when you make changes, start small, go slowly, and listen to your body…and, as always, consult a professional as needed! We’ll be back next week with a micro workout for healthy feet. Until then, check out www.FitLabPGH.com for podcasts, movement tips, and lifestyle hacks. FitLabPGH- Share the Trail
FitLabPGH Podcast is doing something a little different this week. Instead of releasing a new podcast episode, we’re bringing you a video podcast…encouraging you to Share the Trail…Summer is (unofficially) here…if there could POSSIBLY be an upside to the pandemic, it’s that more people are getting outside and making movement part of their lifestyle…we want you ALL to enjoy movement on the trails…so today’s video podcast includes a few tips to help minimize the squabbling (on social media and in real life) between walkers, runners, and cyclists on the trails… Tip 1: Share the Trail. The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) encouraged people to #ShareTheTrail before there were hashtags! Trails are not your private property…be a good neighbor…do your part to help all trail users have a positive experience. Tip 2: Be aware of your surroundings…whether you’re walking or cycling, be alert, and be courteous to other trail users. If you want to listen to music…or to the FitLabPGH podcast…limit yourself to one earbud…or keep your ears open with AfterShokz Trekz headphones…and if you’re thinking about keeping your ears open by playing your music on speaker…resist the urge…please…share the trail, not your music. Tip 3: Give warning (and space) when passing from behind. A friendly call out (or ring of a bell) prevents surprises…and giving space prevents collisions…if you’re riding in a group, please pass single file….and be aware of oncoming “traffic”…please don’t be the cyclist that causes walkers/runners to jump off the trail. Side note, if you’re being passed, please do your part to share the trail…keep right, and if you’re part of a group, close ranks or go single file. Tip 4: If you stop, step off the trail…with your bike…or stroller..or dog…or child. Take time to enjoy the scenery and wildlife…or to text pics to friends…but leave the trail clear for others. For more healthy lifestyle ideas and inspiration, check out the FitLabPGH podcast – we release a new episode (almost) every Sunday. See the website for subscription options, and check out the archives…with over 150 episodes (and counting) to choose from, they might lead you to your new favorite activity. Make a plan that includes movement and time for rest and recovery…do your best to stay safe…and wash your hands!
