Mythic Mind Games
by Andrew Snyder
Pursuing wisdom through primary and secondary worlds.Mythic Mind Games is a conversation about video games as secondary worlds. We look at story, design, and the moral imagination of play: what games train us to love, fear, hope for, and become. This is not a review show and not a strategy guide. Episodes sit with particular games and ask what they are doing to the soul. Grief, home, identity, freedom, and wonder show up here as often as bosses and endings.Hosted by Andrew Snyder, Ph.D., alongside friends from the Fellowship.Listen on your own, then continue the discussion at mythicmindfellowship.com.

52 - Video Games and the Psyche: Agency, Anxiety, and Upbuilding
Video games are not only amusement. They are structured existential experiences: forks that press agency, anxiety, identity, desire, and failure on a real self, whether the world on screen is "primary" or secondary. In this Mythic Mind Games season opener for Exploring the Psyche, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) makes the case for approaching games with seriousness and discernment. Drawing on Tolkien's fairy-stories (escape, consolation, recovery), C.S. Lewis and Kierkegaard on living other lives through story, and Kierkegaard's vertigo of freedom, he asks what play does to attention and desire: if games can deform the self, they can also upbuild it when wisdom is what we seek in the marketplace.Topics include choice practiced vs choice observed, embodied attention, character archetypes as self-revelation, noble goals vs grind, failure and grit (including Clair Obscur), and why "sticky" decisions make play feel moral. A first season conversation on grief in video games is teased.Join us for our season of "Exploring the Psyche" at https://mythicmindfellowship.comYouTube Link: https://youtu.be/-BS688rdNW8

51 - Facing Fate in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/Qi0kgEKEEmg Final Fantasy VII Rebirth asks whether Remake's defiance of fate was ever real freedom: after killing the arbiter of fate, the path still narrows, some outcomes stay locked, and Sephiroth bends the Whispers to set himself up as a new master of fate across timelines. Aerith still dies as fate decreed, yet the remake path saturates her arc with foreboding from the start, trading original shock for a different, sustained weight that largely keeps the spirit of 1997 while opening Zack-periphery multiverse stakes for Revelation. In this episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Micah to wrap the Final Fantasy VII mini-series on Square Enix's 2024 Part 2. They praise combat, party synergy, and character work that continues Remake's reimagining, weigh open-area pacing and gamey bloat against narrative heart, and press the faithfulness question: does Rebirth honor the original's essence when timelines collide, Cloud's hollow identity fractures, and Aerith surrenders her role with grace? Excited for Revelation; next Games turn opens Exploring the Psyche. 50 - Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Trauma, and Untapped Depth
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/yKEFkPQmkU8 Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is a visually striking fan-service film that sketches a psychological study of Cloud's unresolved trauma and a fragmented Sephiroth (Kadaj and company), then mostly leaves that potential untapped for action-anime spectacle. The strongest beats are Cloud finding purpose against evil again, a literal death-and-rebirth turn, and Aerith's healing rain as a baptismal church scene; the rest of the cast is mostly nostalgia cameo. In this cross-listed Mythic Mind Games / Movies episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Micah to weigh Square Enix's 2005/2006 CGI sequel two decades on. They praise the era's animation and cool fight set pieces, critique English voice direction and a Cloud character reset that undoes growth from the original game, and wish the film had spent less runtime on vapid villains and more on existential character work Remake later handles with clearer love for the same people. Next in the Games mini-series: Rebirth. 49 - Final Fantasy VII Remake: Reimagining, Sequel, and Fate
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/GpBsTGBtTZY Final Fantasy VII Remake is less a straight remake than a reimagining that often plays like a sequel: Midgar expands into a full game that deepens Avalanche, Barret, Jessie, and Cloud's found-family bonds, while the Whispers and a broken fate open multiverse speculation that leads straight into Rebirth. The heart of the original returns stronger, renewing the grief beats (the plate fall, Jessie's death, Aerith foreshadowing) that Mythic Mind Games framed as consolation and recovery in the Roundtable. In this episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Micah to weigh nostalgia against craft on Square Enix's 2020 revisit of the 1997 classic. They praise character deepening that still feels like the same people, the soundtrack's adapted nostalgia, and Midgar's longer runtime as emotional buildup rather than empty padding. They also probe the remake-vs-sequel question, Sephiroth's early pressure on fate's arbiter, timeline splits after the Whisper bosses, and why Advent Children's character handling left trepidation that Remake largely dissolves. Next in the mini-series: Advent Children, then Rebirth. 48 - Final Fantasy VII: Grief, Consolation, and Recovery
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/A_AOv8Jso04 Final Fantasy VII is a story of grief, consolation, and recovery: Aerith's death scars the party and the player, Cloud must rebuild an identity that was never simply his, and Sephiroth stands as the nihilistic inverse of the beauty and life she embodies. In this Mythic Mind Games roundtable, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by David, Micah, and Josh for a character-centered reading of the 1997 classic. They linger on Cloud's existential crisis (puppet, borrowed memories, Zack, and the question of whether a self can still be claimed), Aerith as sanctuary and sorrowful beauty in Midgar's church and flower beds, Tifa and Barret as anchors after her loss, and Sephiroth's hunger to own the planet against her belonging to it. Along the way they weigh nostalgia versus craft, the game's longing-filled aesthetic and soundtrack, ecological themes, Materia combat, and why FF7 still holds as more than a childhood favorite. 47 - Outer Wilds: Stories and Music at the End of the Universe
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/ahKy2pWEFMI Outer Wilds asks what stories we tell and what music we make when the universe itself is ending. On the last day of everything, a 22-minute time loop forces the question: where do you find meaning in the face of mortal fate and cosmic finality? SPOILER WARNING: This episode discusses Outer Wilds in depth, including major plot reveals and the ending. If you have not finished the game (and preferably the Echoes of the Eye DLC), play first, then return. Outer Wilds is best encountered blind. In this Mythic Mind Games roundtable, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Michael and Micah for Mobius Digital's time-loop exploration classic. They trace the knowledge Metroidvania of Nomai ruins, the Sun Station false quest to "save" the system, Chert's existential panic as stars die, and the campfire at the Eye of the Universe where remembered friends play one last song. The ending refuses a save-the-world fantasy: the end is inevitable, yet agency still matters in how you live and what you carry forward. Along the way they hear a Silmarillion echo (music poured into a new creation), weigh Ecclesiastes and memento mori against cultural denial of death, and touch the DLC's critique of false digital immortality through the Prisoner at the fire. 46 - Final Fantasy Tactics and Demonic Revolutionaries
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/-MMKFphISss What looks like politics, and imagines itself to be political, will one day unmask itself as a religious movement. (Søren Kierkegaard) Final Fantasy Tactics stages justice, class warfare, and a church that looks faithful while feeding demonic deception. Ramza's war for order sits beside Delita's rise, and the Lucavi plot under the surface of Ivalice's politics. In this Mythic Mind Games episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder reads FFT as a story about what lurks beneath political movements: genuine prayer and salvation language at the start, then a religion unmasked as demonic revolution against true justice. 45 - Why Video Games Repay Philosophical Attention
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/LaDAEZcs1AU Outer Wilds had to wait. Nearly a year into Mythic Mind Games, Dr. Andrew Snyder instead looks back: why he set video games aside, what recovered his appetite for fiction, and why games now repay philosophical attention. As Mythic Mind Games approaches its first anniversary (the show began May 2025), this solo reflection traces a personal and intellectual arc. Childhood consoles and SNES RPGs gave way, in his twenties, to the sense that games were a waste of time amid grad school, marriage, work, and kids. A utilitarian suspicion of fiction followed. Kierkegaard's emphasis on existential appropriation, a season of deep sorrow, and Tolkien's On Fairy-Stories categories of escape, consolation, and recovery reopened secondary worlds. Lord of the Rings and then Lewis, MacDonald, and Dostoyevsky reshaped what stories can do. From there he asks whether video games can take a quasi-literary role: not identical to books, but capable of artistic edification when engaged with responsibility. He then surveys the first ~11 months of the Games podcast and related conversations: Knights of the Old Republic and identity, Red Dead Redemption 2 beside Tolstoy's Death of Ivan Ilyich, Zelda, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters 1-6, an Elder Scrolls philosophy course (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim), Fallout, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, The Forgotten City, Red Dead Redemption, and Chrono Trigger. Along the way he draws on C. S. Lewis on telling the story you have rather than preaching an ideology, and closes with a hierarchy of primary-world responsibilities: childlikeness without childishness, recovery of something lost, and discovery of a deeper adult way to play. Outer Wilds was delayed for scheduling and will return soon as ep. 47: https://youtu.be/ahKy2pWEFMI Series manifesto (Fairy-Stories / Tolkien subcreation): https://youtu.be/lYzzMFDus9U Related: Arthur Morgan and Ivan Ilyich (ep. 4) https://youtu.be/ynV50tCh6oc; The Value of Video Games (ep. 10) https://youtu.be/C7g7z-PmVwU; Chrono Trigger (ep. 44) https://youtu.be/FZ0OQjWFkb4.<... /> Join the Mythic Mind Fellowship:https://mythicmindfellowship.c... 44 - Chrono Trigger: Time Travel, Lavos, and Childlike Wonder
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/FZ0OQjWFkb4 Chrono Trigger is the SNES all-star package: Toriyama's designs, Mitsuda's melodies, and a time-travel story that still hits with childlike wonder. The Fellowship talks bouncing through eras to find when time went wrong, facing Lavos, and a cast of frog, robot, princess, and Magus that makes the adventure stick. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder and guests (including Michael Kane) read the game as art that works on all fronts: music you still hum, a silent hero's sacrifice and return, and the rare sense that a JRPG can stage wonder without losing dramatic force. 43 - Red Dead Redemption: Honor, Vengeance & John Marston
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/cqrr3_p1hmw Red Dead Redemption (the original) is a focused modernist tragedy: John Marston's shorter path toward an honest life, Jack's vengeance epilogue, and a Nordic-feeling cycle of violence where self-destructive behavior leads to self-destruction. Set beside Red Dead Redemption 2, that story looks leaner and darker, while Arthur Morgan's arc feels more like fantasy or true myth: honor under tuberculosis and disempowerment, Dutch's noble lie of freedom, and Beecher's Hope as a possible way out of the outlaw life. In this Mythic Mind Games guest chat, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Michael Kane and Master Samwise to talk Red Dead Redemption 1 after the earlier RDR2 episodes, and to revisit 2 with fresh playthroughs. They weigh John's clear-sighted humility and Mexico disillusionment against Arthur's depth; high vs low honor; the gang code versus Strauss's usury; and whether RDR1's deterministic vengeance or RDR2's transcendent hope better names the series' redemption. This is the RDR1 / Red Dead generally panel (ep. 43), not the solo Arthur Morgan essay or the RDR2 panel. Watch the video:https://youtu.be/BRyGEMc2I58 Skyrim's Dawnguard pits rebuilt vampire hunters against Harkon's Volkihar clan and the Tyranny of the Sun, while Dragonborn sends you to Solstheim against Miraak: All-Maker thralls, Apocrypha's Black Books, and Hermaeus Mora's bargain. Across both DLCs the chat turns to vampires, Boethius, and Faustian bargains: what power costs when immortality, knowledge, or domination is the price. In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy live conversation (~104 min), Dr. Andrew Snyder and the Mythic Mind Games community dig into Skyrim's expansions together: Dawnguard and Dragonborn plots, vampire ethics, Miraak's false prophecy, and where the Games podcast goes next after this final (for now) Elder Scrolls unit. 37 - Oblivion's Shivering Isles: Mantling Sheogorath and Walking Like a God
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/fns-nZoOs0A In Oblivion's Shivering Isles, mantling Sheogorath means walking like the Mad God until you become him. The Champion of Cyrodiil lives Sheogorath's steps, scripts, and contingency plan, then takes the vacant throne when the Greymarch turns the Mad God back into Jyggalag: walk like them until they must walk like you. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation for the Elder Scrolls & Philosophy study, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Ian and Tyler. They read Mania and Dementia as boundless possibility versus hyper-limitation, map those poles onto Kierkegaard's despair of infinitude and finitude, and treat Sheogorath's refusal to be Jyggalag as demonic defiant despair. From there the talk opens the in-world metaphysics of mantling (Enantiomorph / steps of the dead), compares it to Nerevarine incarnation, Talos and Lorkhan, Mannimarco, and Pelinal, and asks whether the biblical mantle of Elijah to Elisha is analogy or contrast when TES makes the absorption literal. Along the way: clinical NPC writing, player mercy inside the maze, CHIM and save-file agency, and why later cheese-friendly Sheogorath may already be walking like the Champion. 34 - Oblivion's Sheogorath and Kierkegaard's Sickness unto Death
Oblivion's Shivering Isles splits madness into Mania and Dementia. Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death names those poles as despair of infinitude and despair of finitude, then diagnoses Sheogorath's defiance as the self that will not be itself. In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy talk, Dr. Andrew Snyder reads Bliss and Crucible, Thadon and Syl, Jyggalag and Sheogorath through Christian existential psychology: why unchecked possibility and hyper-limitation both destroy the self, and how the Champion of Cyrodiil integrates finitude and infinitude in a leap of faith toward an authentic whole. Along the way: Chesterton on sane insanity, Nietzsche's madman, Augustine on the tyrant as slave, and a closing line from Fear and Trembling.Related: Mythic Mind Games ep. 33 (Story of Oblivion: Shivering Isles) and ep. 30 (Oblivion and the Knight of Faith).Watch the video for this episode and subscribe to my YouTube channel here:https://youtu.be/BZUgEUzaBXUJoin the Mythic Mind Fellowship:https://mythicmindfellowship.comListen to all THREE Mythic Mind podcasts:• Mythic Mind• Mythic Mind Games• Mythic Mind Movies & Shows

31 - Oblivion Chat: Martin Septim, Oblivion Crisis, Mehrunes Dagon
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/RsFuGgB5FYQ Oblivion's base game puts a prisoner beside Martin Septim as the Oblivion Crisis breaks: Uriel dead, the Amulet of Kings lost, Mythic Dawn gates opening, and Mehrunes Dagon pressing Cyrodiil toward chaos. The Hero of Kvatch is not the chosen one; the story centers Martin, sacrifice, and closing the gates before the Temple of the One. In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy live conversation (~84 min), Dr. Andrew Snyder and the Mythic Mind Games community dig into the base game of Oblivion together: Martin Septim and empire, the Amulet of Kings, Mehrunes Dagon's invasion, and how the Knight of Faith lecture frames humble service, willing entry into Oblivion, and heroism that is not concerned with being seen as heroic. In this lecture, originally made for the Elder Scrolls & Philosophy study, I read The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion alongside Søren Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling. We look at: • Why Oblivion breaks the “chosen one” pattern of Morrowind and Skyrim — and centers Martin Septim instead • True heroism that is not concerned with being seen as heroic • The knight of infinite resignation vs the knight of faith • Sacrifice, Abraham and Isaac, and what it means to enter Oblivion willinglyWatch the video for this episode and subscribe to my YouTube channel here:https://youtu.be/9XUuJ7vLw1EJoin the Mythic Mind Fellowship:https://mythicmindfellowship.comListen to all THREE Mythic Mind podcasts:• Mythic Mind• Mythic Mind Games• Mythic Mind Movies & Shows

29 - The Story of Oblivion: Martin, Mehrunes Dagon, and the Amulet of Kings
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/YD3eQI8ZzZk Oblivion's main story runs from an Imperial prison cell to the Temple of the One: Uriel Septim's dreams, the Amulet of Kings, Martin at Kvatch, and Mehrunes Dagon's bid to swallow Tamriel. Mythic Dawn cultists steal the amulet into Mankar Camoran's Paradise; the Hero of Kvatch closes gates, gathers the ritual, and returns the amulet so Martin can become the Avatar of Akatosh. In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy story overview, Dr. Andrew Snyder traces the path to Champion of Cyrodiil, and the sacrifice that seals the gates of Oblivion before the hero fades toward whatever Sheogorath knows next. In this Mythic Mind Games live conversation (~79 min), Dr. Andrew Snyder and the Mythic Mind Games community dig into Fallout Prime Season 1 together: Lucy's vault idealism, the Ghoul's moral collapse, Maximus and Brotherhood ends-justify-means hazing, Vault-Tec spoilers, and adaptation fidelity (atmosphere vs plot holes) as the Games Fallout arc closes for now ahead of a later Fallout-and-philosophy study. 25 - Forgotten City: Golden Rule, Time Loop, Underworld Justice
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/GSfW2U4V7Q0 The Forgotten City stages philosophy as play: a Golden Rule so extreme that one sin golden-statues the whole city, an underworld stacked Roman over Greek over Egyptian over Sumerian, and a time-loop confrontation with Pluto/Hades. The game pushes moral relativism; this episode praises the Socratic form while arguing we already know justice is real, and the ancient question is what justice is. In this Mythic Mind Games initial-thoughts episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder walks Charon-Karen, civic virtue vs forced "who is to say," the hermit dialogue tree, Persephone's whispers, and why undermining absolutes cannot ground the compassion the story wants. Watch the video:https://youtu.be/7KZfhLl8Y0I Fallout: New Vegas stages four claims to rule the Mojave: Mr. House's technocratic Strip, the NCR's stretched republic, Caesar's Legion's terror-order, and Yes Man independence. Size and guns alone do not settle legitimacy; the Courier still has to choose. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder (with Ian) reads House as wizard-in-the-tower continuity with the old world, the NCR as a decaying beast that can oppress while preaching order, the Legion as cartoon evil with one Hegelian monologue, and independent Vegas as Courier-held Securitron power that still must answer Hoover Dam scarcity. Augustine's pirate and emperor linger behind the question: what makes a government more than a gang? 21 - Final Fantasy VI and the Will to Meaning
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/3d44YewC12w Final Fantasy VI asks whether a will to meaning can stand against nihilism after the world is ruined. Kefka embodies a self-deifying will to power (Nietzsche's "create your own values"), while the ensemble must face despair, personal loss, and global ruin and still discover meaning through purpose, love, and connection. The episode pairs that Frankl-framed question with C.S. Lewis's Abolition of Man: a man without a chest who grasps for power and ends as an empty shell. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by David and Micah for Final Fantasy VI as a franchise inflection point. They linger on Magitek exploitation of Espers, the World of Ruin's psychological turn (Cyan's grief, Celes at the cliff, Terra's maternal foil to Kefka), the opera and soundtrack, and whether a secular "life is meaningful because we choose it" answer is sturdy enough against Kefka, or whether hope needs a deeper root. Great Houses, Dunmer tradition, and Daedric power shape whether fate, Hortator legitimacy, and false divinity can hold. In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy live conversation (~64 min), Dr. Andrew Snyder and the Mythic Mind Games community dig into the base game of Morrowind together: world-building versus later Elder Scrolls titles, will-to-power and stagnation on Vvardenfell, and what the Nerevarine story asks before the Lessons of Vivec. 18 - The Story of Morrowind: Nerevarine, Fate, and the Hortator
Morrowind's main story runs from Lorkhan's Heart under Red Mountain to an Outlander who may be Nerevar reborn. Prophecy, Hortator legitimacy before the great houses, Tribunal betrayal, and Dagoth Ur's offer at the Heart: refuse a corrupted companionship, or join it.In this Elder Scrolls & Philosophy story overview, Dr. Andrew Snyder traces the Chimer-to-Dunmer arc, Kagrenac's tools, the seven trials of the Nerevarine, and why the hero's fate stays as open as legend. 17 - Elder Scrolls Creation Myth: Anu, Padomay, and Lorkhan's Sacrifice
The Elder Scrolls creation myth begins with Anu and Padomay (order and chaos, form and void) and cascades through emanation, limitation, and the costly making of Mundus. This analysis sets that cosmogony beside Enuma Elish, Plato, Gnostic and Neoplatonic emanation schemes, and Christian theology: Is Lorkhan a demiurge-trickster pulling the gods toward the void, or the champion of an "ennoblement of sacrifice" that makes mortal reflection and transcendence possible? Along the way: Anuiel and Sithis, the weakening of the Aedra, men vs elves on the meaning of mortality, and why matter need not be treated as a Gnostic mistake.Companion episode (myth told straight): Mythic Mind Games, ep. 15.https://youtu.be/LL2cQiLBym4Watch the video for this episode and subscribe to my YouTube channel here:https://youtu.be/EDk7u3gd2VEJoin the Mythic Mind Fellowship:https://mythicmindfellowship.comListen to all THREE Mythic Mind podcasts:• Mythic Mind• Mythic Mind Games• Mythic Mind Movies & Shows

16 - Final Fantasy V: Job System, Friendship, and Fun
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/p8r9agrl9k4 Final Fantasy V is the series' playful job-system peak and a transition nexus in the early crystal era. Where Final Fantasy I locked a class and III let you switch, V lets you mix and match skills across jobs until Freelancer becomes a sandbox of tactics. That customization makes it, for this conversation, the most fun of the early games to play, even when the story sits lighter than II, IV, and VI. Under the lighthearted crystal quest, friendship, family, and facing death still matter: Galuf's bond restores his identity before a sacrifice that does not come back, Gilgamesh wants rivals who become friends in the void, and Exdeath turns corrupted nature and formless chaos against the world the party loves. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Micah Jones for Final Fantasy V's Job Fiesta cult appeal, crystal stewardship and industrial harvest, the Bartz hometown wipe, and why an underappreciated entry still rewards Christian-humanities attention to friendship, working together through hardship, and light against the void. David could not join this session; the FF arc continues with VI next. 14 - Final Fantasy IV and Cecil's Dark Knight Redemption
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/GWG5SSAieWY Final Fantasy IV is the series' storytelling leap: the first entry with a fully meaningful character-driven narrative. Cecil begins on the wrong side as a Dark Knight, haunted by the raid on Mysidia, then walks a redemption arc from darkness toward the light as a paladin. At Mount Ordeals he meets a trial that looks like death and resurrection: he must refuse to fight his dark self, because darkness cannot drive out darkness. The game pairs that conversion with repentance, forgiveness, heroic sacrifice, and Kain's struggle to atone without hiding behind mind control alone. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by David and Micah for Final Fantasy IV's cinematic SNES storytelling, Tower of Babel and moon-scale imagination, Golbez's brother reveal, and the ensemble of characters who keep laying themselves down for one another. They linger on why the Dark Knight class costs the soul in battle, why Mysidia's wounded town still points Cecil toward the light, and how redemption and sacrifice make this early Final Fantasy repay philosophical and Christian-humanities attention. 13 - Final Fantasy I-III: Order, Chaos, and Early Storytelling
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/jdX_JULD2aQ Final Fantasy I, II, and III are the franchise's early laboratory: light on character drama by later standards, yet already advancing title by title in storytelling and systems. Final Fantasy I sends Warriors of Light to restore corrupted elemental crystals and ends by unveiling Chaos as the true enemy behind Garland's time-loop. Final Fantasy II takes a significant step forward in story as orphans oppose a demonic empire, kill an emperor who returns as a Satan figure, and follow him into Pandemonium. Final Fantasy III debuts the job system and asks whether light and dark are the same as good and evil, as Warriors of Light redeem Warriors of Dark against the Cloud of Darkness. In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by David and Micah for Pixel Remaster playthroughs, plot reconstruction across three early entries that can blur together, and the philosophical threads already present: order as good and achievable, nested demonic villains, Paradise Lost echoes, and a cosmology where light and dark are not simply moral labels. They track how the series learns to emphasize story in one title and gameplay mechanics in the next on the road toward discovering itself by Final Fantasy VI. 12 - Why Final Fantasy Endures: Wonder, Themes, and Philosophy
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/mXSP_TWbMdA Final Fantasy has nearly four decades of staying power because its JRPG stories keep doing something real: literary themes, a sense of wonder, and a franchise that reinvents itself while still resonating. This episode opens Mythic Mind Games' long Final Fantasy series as a philosophy and humanities gateway, not only a nostalgia tour. Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by David and Micah for a foundations talk: their experience with the series, why video games (especially story-heavy JRPGs) repay literary attention, how Final Fantasy endures through legacy plus innovation, and recurring ideas that sit close to a Christian imagination (order out of chaos, being over non-being, self-sacrifice, and villains who turn out to be pawns of a deeper evil). They also linger on enchantment, overworld exploration, and the fantasy/science-fiction hybrid that keeps the worlds feeling large and strange. Next stop: Final Fantasy I, II, and III. 10 - Are Video Games a Waste of Time? Art and Upbuilding Value
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/C7g7z-PmVwU Are video games just a waste of time, or can they carry real artistic and upbuilding value? Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Master Samwise and Josh Traylor for an early Mythic Mind Games conversation on games as art, story, and participatory subcreation. They ask what games are for: empty amusement, or secondary worlds that answer the human desire for story and enchantment. Drawing on Tolkien (escape as part of recovery; On Fairy-Stories; literature's co-subcreation versus cinema's finished spectacle), they argue that many games let players help make the story within the world's bounds. Rightly ordered play can pursue wisdom, elucidate truth, and grow virtue; the wrong kind of escape is a vice of the player more than a fatal flaw of the medium. Along the way they trade favorite titles and themes across Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Knights of the Old Republic, Red Dead Redemption 2, Zelda, Dragon Age, XCOM, and more. Note: In the intro Andrew says this conversation was Mythic Mind episode 80; it was actually episode 78 (March 2025), inserted here while Mass Effect 3 was delayed. 7 - Legend of Zelda: Mythopoeia, Tolkien, and the Triforce
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/vU3OBUUitis The Legend of Zelda can feel like playing Tolkien: home, adventure, and a return that leaves you looking at the primary world differently. What if that is mythopoeia, not nostalgia? In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder and Joshua Traylor talk with Dr. Anthony Cirilla, co-editor of Mythopoeic Narrative in The Legend of Zelda, about Tolkien's mythmaking, On Fairy-Stories and subcreation, Lewis's Myth Became Fact, and the Triforce as a concrete image of power, wisdom, and courage working together. They defend Zelda's "generic" fairy-story heroics, weigh Ocarina's saturated symbolism against sprawling open worlds, and ask how digital fantasy can train the imagination without replacing real life. 6 - Legend of Zelda: Triforce Virtues and the Cyclical Hero
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/kuyYT_8nsiM The Legend of Zelda keeps returning because it works like a modern mythology: a public dream of courage, destiny, and a hero who rises again whenever darkness returns. Why does that pattern still grip players across decades of games? In this Mythic Mind Games conversation, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Josh Traylor and David Rutledge for a general philosophy and mythology chat on Zelda. They trace creation myths and the Triforce virtues of power, wisdom, and courage; Link as a silent chosen hero; Demise's curse and the cycle of the goddess's blood and the hero's spirit; branching timelines; music and landscape as meaning; and how Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom extend the mythos. Power without wisdom or courage becomes the problem. The series stays powerful because it stages eternal longings, not only nostalgia. Part one of the Zelda miniseries (general chat). 5 - Red Dead Redemption 2: Honor, Loyalty & Arthur's Redemption (feat. Master Samwise & Jeremy Kee)
Watch the video:https://youtu.be/WpViR-BQwCg Red Dead Redemption 2 is a story about honor and redemption under Dutch van der Linde's noble lie of freedom. Arthur Morgan, raised in the Van der Linde gang, prizes loyalty until tuberculosis forces him to see through Dutch, reorder desire toward the good, and choose whether high honor or the outlaw life names his last days. In this Mythic Mind Games panel, Dr. Andrew Snyder is joined by Master Samwise and Jeremy Kee for a broad conversation on RDR2's world, story, and philosophy after the solo Arthur Morgan essay. They trace Arthur's evolution from blind loyalty to Dutch toward loyalty as seeking the good of John, Abigail, and Jack; Mary Linton and the "giant" of the outlaw life; Sister Calderon's confession-like counsel; high-honor sunrise death versus low-honor collapse; and cowboy romanticism's code of honor as evidence that games can approach literature and myth. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Pursuing wisdom through primary and secondary worlds.Mythic Mind Games is a conversation about video games as secondary worlds.
