    906. Obsolete Yourself Before Someone Else Does: Gwynne Shotwell's Rule for Staying Ahead

Brian discusses a line from SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell at the 2026 All-In Summit: if you don't make your own products obsolete, someone else will do it for you. SpaceX is building the rocket that will replace Falcon 9, the very rocket that made the company, while that rocket is still winning. Brian unpacks why the thing that makes you money today is often the thing that leaves you most exposed, and why some of the most famous companies in history thrived or collapsed on this one decision. Brian also discusses why this matters even more for service businesses, where the "product" is your process, pricing, and client experience, and it can go stale while business still looks good. He closes with one question every owner should answer honestly, and a simple way to start replacing your own business before a competitor does it for you. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 905. The Emotional Cycle of Change, and Why You Want to Quit at Week Six

Brian discusses the Emotional Cycle of Change, a model developed by Don Kelley and Daryl Conner and published in 1979, and why it explains the sinking feeling that shows up a few weeks into almost every decision you were excited about. Unlike most change models, this one was built for voluntary change, the kind you chose, which is exactly what makes the downturn so disorienting when it arrives. Brian walks through the five stages as they show up in a business and focuses on the one where nearly everything dies, including the distinction Kelley and Conner drew between people who check out loudly and people who check out quietly while still attending every meeting. He then gets practical about what to do when you are in it, why the moment to write your exit conditions is while you are still optimistic, and how to tell a hard decision from a genuinely wrong one. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 904. To Do Something You've Never Done, You Have to Do Something You've Never Done

Brian discusses a line he keeps coming back to: when you are trying to do something you have never done before, you may need to do something you have never done before. It sounds like a tautology until you separate the two halves, and Brian argues that almost everyone wants the first half without paying for the second. He explains why doing more of what you are already good at does not count as doing something new, and why that distinction is where most growth quietly stalls. He then applies the idea to two very different situations, the early stage startup and the established business that has flatlined, and makes the case that they suffer from opposite problems. Brian closes with Keith Cunningham's Thinking Time practice from The Road Less Stupid, including the mechanics of a session, why the useful thinking happens late, and three questions to bring to your first block. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 903. Why Balance May Be the Most Underrated Predictor of How Long You Live

Brian discusses balance, and makes the case that it may be the most underrated input in the entire longevity conversation. Most people rank sleep, nutrition, strength and cardio as their health priorities. Almost nobody ranks balance, and Brian argues that is a mistake with real consequences. He walks through what the research actually shows, including a study of seventeen hundred adults where a single ten second test was independently associated with a dramatically higher risk of death, and Mayo Clinic research finding that balance declines faster with age than grip strength, knee strength, or walking gait. He explains why balance is not one skill but a composite score across four separate systems, and why that makes it such a powerful early warning signal. Brian also gives two simple tests you can take at home today, and three exercises to start improving your score this week. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 902. The Two-Question Test for Reversing a Decision You Regret

Brian discusses the courage to change your mind after you have already announced your decision. He opens with a seventeen year old family friend who quit football before his senior season, held that line through summer workouts, preseason, and the first two games, and then did something almost no adult ever does. He reversed himself and asked for his spot back in week four. Brian argues the reversal matters far more than the decision, and that most seasoned business leaders would never have made the same move, not because they were right but because their decision had quietly turned into an identity. He walks through three real business reversals, including Steve Jobs taking Microsoft's money in front of a booing Macworld crowd in 1997 and Nike walking back into the wholesale partners it had publicly walked out on. Brian also discusses how to tell courage apart from flip flopping. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 901. The Horseshoe: A Test for Whether You've Taken a Business Practice Too Far

Brian borrows a model from political theory and puts it to work on management. Horseshoe theory says the ideological spectrum isn't a straight line but a bent one, where the two extremes curl toward each other and end up more alike than either is to the center. Brian spends a minute on the origin, is candid about why political scientists question the model, and then leaves politics behind for the part that actually matters to operators. Because the same pattern runs through business. Two founders with opposite management philosophies, each certain the other one has it backward, routinely produce the identical failure in their teams. Brian walks through five pairs where this happens, explains the single underlying mechanism that connects all of them, and gives a diagnostic you can run on your own strongest conviction. Brian also discusses why certainty itself is the warning sign. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 900. How to Argue Better: Steel Manning, Straw Manning, and the Difference That Costs You Information

Brian breaks down two terms that get thrown around loosely and are worth understanding precisely: the straw man and the steel man. One of them is a trap most leaders fall into daily without any bad intent, usually because they're moving fast and their brain compresses what someone said into something simpler and easier to argue with. The other is a discipline that traces back to game theorist Anatol Rapoport and was put in front of a business audience by philosopher Daniel Dennett, and Charlie Munger had his own version of it. Brian walks through both with the same workplace conversation, showing how the exact same sentence from a team member produces two completely different meetings depending on which approach the leader takes. Brian also discusses a second, entirely legitimate meaning of straw man that shows up in consulting and engineering, and why it beats asking your team an open-ended question. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 899. Leaders are Teachers: The Five Laws of Learning, and Why Most Leaders Quit After the First One

Brian makes the case that a leader is a teacher above all else, and that most of what a leader does has a hard ceiling of one person's capacity. Teaching is the only leadership activity that compounds. He also points out that you are teaching your team whether or not you intend to, and that the only real question is whether you are doing it on purpose. Brian looks at three entrepreneurs worth modeling on this, none of them the names you would expect, and what they built that most companies never do. Then he walks through the laws of learning, a framework that traces back to John Wooden, and applies all five to a situation most leaders will recognize immediately: a new salesperson, a set of scripts and methods, and thirty days to make them stick. Brian also discusses which of the five laws almost everyone abandons early. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 898. Liking Your Team vs. Loving Your Team, and Why Only One of Them Is Your Job

Brian discusses a sentence he thinks every leader should be willing to say out loud: I will not like you all the same, but I will love you all the same. Half of that makes most leaders uncomfortable, because we have been trained to pretend every person on our team lands on us exactly the same way. They don't. Brian separates liking, which is involuntary, from loving, which is a decision you make on purpose and then make again the next day. He looks at what goes wrong in both directions: the leader who performs evenness until their feedback becomes useless, and the leader who quietly lets preference decide who gets coached and who gets managed. Along the way he draws on Bill Campbell and on Reed Hastings' argument that a company is a team and not a family. Brian also discusses how to find out today whether you have been favoring someone. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 896. The Trash Bucket

Brian discusses the morning he accidentally handed his entire team the leads his company had already thrown away. His director of operations was out of the office, somebody had to decide what the team was calling that day, and Brian went into the system and built the list himself. He pulled a group he believed were old Zillow leads that had gone cold, loaded them up, and put everyone on the phones. Two hours later his agents were asking him where he found the best leads they had ever called. The next morning his ops director came back, audited the work, and told him what he had actually given them. Brian also discusses the 1963 study that explains why the day went the way it did, and why the result had almost nothing to do with the list itself. He closes with one specific assignment to run this week. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 895. Your Blind Spot and the Johari Window

Brian discusses self-awareness, and why almost every business owner overrates their own. He opens with a recent experience and uses it to make a case that most entrepreneurs have never priced correctly: the gap between how you see yourself  and how your team actually experiences you is expensive, and it compounds. Brian also discusses research showing that the vast majority of us believe we are self-aware while only a small fraction actually are, and walks through the Johari Window, a model built in 1955 that gives you a way to locate the things about yourself you genuinely cannot see. He then lays out how to shrink your blind spot, why the question you ask yourself matters more than the answer, and a single exercise to run this week that will surface the pattern you have been missing. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 894. Genius Is Nothing But Patience: What That Means for Your Business, Your Body, and Your Team

Brian discusses a nine-word line about genius that most of the internet has been crediting to the wrong man for two centuries, and what it actually demands of you once you take it seriously. The claim is simple and uncomfortable: the people you look at and call gifted may not be gifted at all. They may just be the ones who stayed longer. Brian separates patience from waiting, explains why one is passive and the other is some of the hardest work you'll ever do, and then runs that distinction through business, health, relationships, personal development, and leadership. Along the way he returns to ideas this show has covered before, including compounding and the hundred hours, and shares what a hundred-mile race taught him about the difference between talent and endurance. 893. Plan, Do, Study, Act: W. Edwards Deming's Four-Step Method for Improving Anything in Your Business

Brian discusses the improvement method W. Edwards Deming taught for four decades, and the reason most business owners are running a version of it that Deming himself objected to. Deming learned the cycle from his mentor at Bell Labs and carried it to Japan in 1950. It came back to America with one word changed. He spent years arguing against that change, and Brian explains what he was protecting and why the distinction separates a business that gets smarter from one that just stays busy. Brian also makes the case for the single step almost every entrepreneur skips. It takes about thirty seconds, it costs nothing, and without it you cannot learn anything from the changes you make. He walks through a business scenario from start to finish and closes with a one-sentence action item to run before your next decision. 892. Why 94% of Your Business Problems Aren't Your People's Fault: The W. Edwards Deming Story

Brian discusses W. Edwards Deming, the American statistician his own country ignored for three decades while Japan rebuilt its entire industrial base around what he taught. In 1950, Deming brought his ideas to Japanese executives who had nothing left to protect. Japan named its national quality prize after him the following year. America didn't notice until a television broadcast in 1980, when Deming was 79 years old. Brian traces where those ideas came from, including Deming's time inside the most productive research laboratory in history and the mentor whose insight about variation changed how Deming saw every business problem after that. Brian also unpacks Deming's estimate of how much organizational trouble actually belongs to the system rather than the people working inside it, and corrects one of the most widely repeated business quotes attributed to Deming, which says close to the opposite of what he believed. 891. I Used to Teach Three Drivers of Trust. Now I Think One Thing Divides Them All

Brian discusses a framework he has taught on this show and from the stage, and the part of it he now believes was incomplete. There is a certain kind of operator almost every entrepreneur has encountered. They read the room better than anyone. Their plan holds up under pressure. They are not performing, and what you see is genuinely who they are. By every measure Brian used to teach, this person should have earned your complete trust. And they haven't, and you have probably never been able to explain why. In this episode Brian walks through what that gap revealed, why the model he was using could not account for it, and what he has come to believe sits underneath the whole thing. He also draws a line between two ideas that sound identical and are not. The distinction may change who you think you can trust. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 890. Why Bezos Banned PowerPoint: The Six-Page Memo, Silent Reading, and Better Decisions

Brian discusses the meeting mechanism Jeff Bezos built at Amazon in 2004, when he banned PowerPoint from senior leadership meetings and replaced it with something almost nobody outside the company was doing: a written narrative memo, read in total silence by everyone in the room before a single word of discussion. Bezos's own explanation for the change was about clarity of thinking. Brian argues there's a second effect that may matter more for a growing business, and it has nothing to do with writing quality — it has to do with who gets listened to and why. Brian also discusses why sending the pre-read on Sunday night has never worked, what happens to a conversation the moment the most senior person in the room speaks first, and how to run a stripped-down version of this with a team of six instead of a boardroom of twenty. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 889. Five Ways to Be a Better Friend Without Stealing Time From Your Family or Your Business

Brian discusses a question Simon Sinek's recent commentary on friendship left him with: why do we build entire industries around romantic relationships and almost nothing around the friendships that carry us through life? Somewhere between building a business, raising a family, and filling a calendar, most people watch their closest friendships quietly go dormant — not through conflict, but through silence. Brian walks through five specific things anyone can start doing this week to go deeper with the friends they already have and build a few new ones, and he takes the objection head on: none of it requires giving up an evening, and none of it competes with family or work. Brian also discusses why the friendships you invest in end up protecting the people at home rather than taking from them, and closes with a single action item that takes about thirty seconds. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 888. The Five-Minute Meeting That Doubled a Team's Output

Brian discusses a twenty-year-old field experiment at a university call center where turnover ran around 400 percent a year and nothing management tried moved the numbers. Then a researcher brought in one person for a five-minute conversation, and a month later the same people, working from the same script for the same pay, were performing at a level no incentive had ever produced. Brian also discusses the three control groups that make this study genuinely useful rather than merely inspiring, including the one that should make every founder uncomfortable about their own role in team motivation. He closes with what this means for entrepreneurs specifically: who in your business you have never introduced to your team, why you are probably the wrong person to deliver the message yourself, and the one way to run this play that will backfire badly. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian discusses a number from happiness research, and what it implies about the timing of the hardest stretch of an entrepreneur's adult life. The finding is that wellbeing does not decline steadily with age. It falls, bottoms out in the middle, and then climbs for the rest of your life, which means the worst of it may be less random than it feels. Brian also discusses why the dip tends to arrive exactly when the business looks best on paper, Chip Conley's framing of the ego as an operating system that serves you brilliantly for four decades and then starts returning errors, and what to actually do about it depending on whether you are in your thirties, forties, or fifties. 886. The Man on the Back of the Page

Brian discusses a line he heard this week that he has not been able to put down, and the old parable it came out of. A father facing hours of work tears a map of the world into pieces and hands them to his young son, confident he has just bought himself an entire evening. The boy is back in half an hour with the whole thing assembled, and his explanation for how he pulled it off is the reason this story has survived for decades without anyone knowing who first told it. Brian also discusses why business owners instinctively reach for the org chart, the calendar, and the comp plan the moment something stops working, where that instinct runs into Gary Keller's The ONE Thing, and the honest limit of the whole idea, because not every problem inside a company is a problem with the person running it. 885. Uncover Your "Why" by Asking Your Best Friend This One Question

Brian discusses one of the most persistent blind spots in business ownership. Most entrepreneurs can explain what they do and how they do it without hesitation, but the moment someone asks why, the answer collapses into a mission statement that could belong to any company in the industry. In this episode Brian works through a deceptively simple exercise created by Simon Sinek, one that requires no offsite, no consultant, and no whiteboard. What it requires is one friend, one question, and the willingness to sit through a conversation that gets awkward before it gets valuable. Brian also discusses why the people closest to you already hold language for something you have never been able to write down, the single mistake that causes most people to abandon the conversation right before the breakthrough, and how the answer you get across a kitchen table maps directly onto the way your team and your clients experience your company. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian discusses a text he sent his kids on the first day of school, and the question underneath it that most parents have never actually tested: if you asked your children right now to name what your family stands for, could they do it? Not could you. Could they. Recorded in honor of his daughter Katy's fourteenth birthday, this one gets into the difference between the values a family believes it holds and the rules it can actually say out loud, and why so many carefully chosen family mission statements never survive contact with a real Tuesday. Brian also discusses what changes when this idea gets pointed at yourself instead of a household, which is where anyone without kids yet should be paying the most attention. 883. Build an Opponent Harder Than the Real One

Brian discusses the strangest fact about the most dominant run in American sports. John Wooden won ten national championships at UCLA with teams known for still having legs in the last four minutes when everyone else was gassed, and he never once made them run to get in shape. No wind sprints. No conditioning block. Nothing that looked like conditioning at all. Brian digs into what Wooden did instead, documented down to the exact minute his practices started, and why the conclusion most leaders draw from it is backwards in a way that is quietly burning their people out. He also discusses a completely different organization that landed on the same answer out of an abandoned trailer in San Diego in 1969, after losing fights it had no business losing. 882. Trust is Cheaper Than You Think

Everybody in business can tell you about the time they got burned. The partner who walked, the hire who lied, the vendor who disappeared with a deposit. Those stories get told at dinner for years. What almost nobody can tell you is what suspicion is costing them the other three hundred and sixty four days of the year, because that number never shows up anywhere. It hides inside the extra approval layer, the meeting that exists only because nobody believes the update, and the work you quietly took back because it was faster to do it yourself. Brian makes the case that most of us have the math on trust running in exactly the wrong direction, and looks at three companies that ran it the other way and built something remarkable doing it. Brian Gubernick sits down with Gian Paul Gonzalez, the high school teacher whose two-word message to a 7-7 New York Giants team in December 2011 became the rally cry behind their Super Bowl run. Gian Paul tells the story of how a ninth grade history teacher from Union City, New Jersey ended up in an NFL chapel service with a pocket full of poker chips, and what he actually said that night. Then the conversation turns to the harder question. What does being all in look like when you're running a business, leading a team, or raising a family? And what does it cost when you actually mean it? In this episode, Brian breaks down Dr. Steve's Energy Triangle, starting with sleep and circadian rhythm, then moving through exercise, hydration and nutrition, recovery, controlled stress, supplementation, and finally stimulants. The big idea: stimulants can amplify energy, but they can't replace the foundation. If coffee is holding the whole system together, the triangle is upside down. This episode is a reminder to stop looking for the next hack and start asking a better question: Which layer of the foundation are you neglecting? -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 879. He Taught All-Americans How to Put On Their Socks

John Wooden won ten national championships in twelve years, seven of them consecutively, along with an 88-game winning streak that still stands. What almost nobody mentions is that he coached fifteen seasons at UCLA without winning anything at all. In this episode, Brian tells the story of what Wooden was actually building during those fifteen years, and why the framework he sketched as a high school English teacher decades before he had any credentials is still one of the most useful leadership tools available to a business owner. Wooden almost never talked about winning. He rarely mentioned the score. He defined success in a way his players could achieve on a losing night. Brian breaks down where that definition came from, what sits at the base of the famous pyramid people call his triangle, and why most leaders are coaching the wrong thing entirely when results slip. Plus the first-practice ritual he ran with future Hall of Famers every single season, and what it should make you rethink about your own team. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 878. What to Do About the Toxic Top Performer

Every business owner eventually gets one. The best producer on the team, numbers nobody can argue with, and a pattern of behavior that's driving good people out the door. You've known about it for a year. You've done nothing, because if they leave, what happens to the number? Brian's argument is that the fear keeping you stuck has a name, and once you name it, you understand why every hard conversation you've had with this person went nowhere. It also explains why the standard advice, go address it directly, is the wrong first move. He walks through what has to be true before that conversation can work, how to run it so there's no debate about the outcome, and the one thing that will cost you more than losing the producer ever would. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 877. You Didn't Lose Motivation. You Lost Rhythm.

Some weeks everything works. You're up before the alarm, the training happens, the hard conversation goes better than expected, and the thing you'd been avoiding takes forty minutes. Other weeks, same person and same goals, everything weighs twice as much. Brian makes the case that we diagnose those stretches wrong. We call it a motivation problem when it's actually a rhythm problem, and the difference matters, because one of those is a feeling and the other is a structure you can rebuild on purpose. In this episode he walks through the moves he uses to build rhythm in business, in health, and in relationships, plus the one rule he follows every time he falls out of it. Somebody asked Brian a question this week: if you were 22 right now, what five business lanes would you go after? AI? Content? His answer was none of them. Not yet. In this episode, Brian explains why picking a lane based on what's hot puts you in line behind every other person who read the same headline — and what he'd do instead, built on Naval Ravikant's idea of specific knowledge, the kind of knowledge you can't be trained for. 875. 94% Text. 29% Show Up.

Ninety-four percent of us are in a group chat. Twenty-nine percent of us actually see those people. Brian breaks down the research behind that gap — and admits he's guilty of it too. He walks through his own two group chats: one with college friends he sees twice a year, one with work friends he only ever sees in work mode. The problem isn't that anyone stopped caring. It's that everyone is waiting for somebody else to go first. It's the 26th of the month, you pull up your numbers, and you already know you're not hitting it. At that point you have two bad options: grind for four days and hope, or write the month off. Brian breaks down the concept of the 15th Protocol: a predetermined set of steps that kicks in automatically when a team is off pace at the midpoint of the month. No meeting, no debate, no emotional decision-making under pressure. There's someone on almost every team who's excellent at the work, respected by her peers, and completely unconvinced of any of it. The self-doubt never announces itself as self-doubt. It shows up as sarcasm. Brian read it as ego for a long time. It wasn't ego, it was armor. In this episode: why impostor phenomenon concentrates in high performers, why praise is the weakest tool you have, and four things that actually work — trading compliments for evidence, pairing a high standard with belief, naming the behavior instead of the insecurity, and sponsoring rather than mentoring. There's someone on Brian's team he had no relationship with. Not a bad one — a nonexistent one. So he did something deliberate: in two separate meetings, he set her up to win in front of her colleagues. In this episode, Brian makes the case that opportunity is something leaders build and hand over, not something they wait for their people to create. He walks through four strategies, two of them rooted in John Maxwell's leadership laws: manufacture the moment, connect before you ask, put a ten on someone's head, and give the credit away. 869. The GOVP Recruiting Framework

How do you attract talent you think is beyond your reach? Not by selling harder. In this episode, Brian shares the recruiting framework he's used throughout his career: GOVP. Goal—what is this person aiming to achieve? Obstacles—what stands in their way? Value—what can your company offer (tools, leadership, systems, mentorship, community) that helps them overcome those obstacles? Plan—put it together and show them the path. The most important letter is V. If you don't have tools in the toolbelt, you can't help anyone solve anything—and talented people see through fake value instantly. The best recruiters aren't the best talkers. They're the ones who built the deepest toolbelt. Brian walks through a full example: a salesperson stuck at ten sales who wants twenty-four, and how GOVP turns that gap into the reason they join you. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 868. Pronoia: What If Everything Is Working In Your Favor?

You know paranoia—the feeling that the world is out to get you. This episode is about the opposite: pronoia, the belief that the world is quietly conspiring in your favor. Brian shares a personal reflection from two decades in business: almost everything worked itself out over time. The deals that fell apart, the hires that didn't work, the sleepless nights over problems he can barely remember today—with time and reflection, he's almost always content with how things played out. So why stress so much in the middle of it? You'll get three ways pronoia works as a practical tool: as a performance edge (the belief is self-fulfilling—you try harder, stay longer, and spot opportunities you'd otherwise miss), as a reframe for setbacks (what if this is redirecting me toward something better?), and why it's the opposite of toxic positivity (belief plus effort—never belief instead of effort). -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. You lay out the plan. You ask if everyone's on board. Everyone says yes. Then weeks go by and nothing moves. There's a name for this: the false consensus effect. Your brain assumes other people think the way you think—so when your team says yes, you hear commitment. In reality, each person said yes to their own version of the plan. In this episode, Brian breaks down new research showing that teams who believe they're on the same page often hold completely different understandings of the same plan and why this hits small teams hardest. 866. Built by Heat - The 4 Benefits of Heat Therapy

A month ago, Brian added something simple to his weekly routine: 15 minutes in the steam room or sauna, three to four times a week. In this episode, he breaks down what the research actually says about deliberate heat exposure — including a 20-year study of over 2,000 men that found a 40% lower risk of death among frequent sauna users — and what's happening inside your body when you sit in the heat: passive cardiovascular training, cellular repair, faster recovery, and deeper sleep. But the biggest surprise wasn't physical. It was mental. Fifteen minutes with no phone, no inputs, and no exit is practice for every high-pressure moment you face as a business owner. Your action item this week: two heat sessions. That's it. Then pay attention to what changes. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 865. Six Rules for Feedback That Actually Works

If you lead a team, your product is your people — and the way you critique their work determines whether they improve every week or start hiding their drafts from you. In this episode, Brian breaks down a feedback framework from the Stanford Design School and applies it to leaders running service businesses: three rules for giving feedback (critique the work, not the person; open with questions; check your personal preferences at the door) and three rules for receiving it (stand with your critic, never get defensive, and remember that silence is golden). Plus a simple two-rule challenge to run in your very next review conversation. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 864. Start at A — Why Action Comes Before Belief

There's a popular framework that says Beliefs drive Emotions, Emotions drive Action, and Action drives Results. Brian thinks it has the order wrong — and the order is everything. In this episode, he walks through the B.E.A.R. loop, explains why starting with belief keeps entrepreneurs waiting forever to "feel ready," and rearranges the letters into an action-first sequence: Act first, collect a result, let the result build the belief, and let the belief spark the excitement. He also shares when the original framework is still worth using — as a backward diagnostic on results you don't like — and closes with a challenge to take one action this week on something you've been waiting to feel confident about. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 863. What Could You Do With 109 Hours?

Eighteen minutes a day for one year equals 109 hours — and 100 hours invested in almost anything makes you pretty decent at it. In this episode, Brian breaks down a simple idea he picked up from Jesse Itzler and turns it into a practical playbook: why the real cost of the 100 hours isn't time but discipline, the two reasons most people never collect (habits are hard to maintain, and delayed gratification is harder), and three tactics to win both battles. It ends with a one-week challenge: pick one skill, schedule eighteen minutes, and win seven straight days. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 862. Goggins Doing Goggins Stuff

Ninety minutes into a quiet trail hike, Brian and two friends crossed paths with David Goggins — no cameras, no audience, just Goggins doing exactly what he says he does. That brief encounter sparked this week's episode on authenticity: what it actually is (alignment between your words and your private actions), why it compounds trust faster than any marketing ever could, and how to use it as a filter for whose advice you take. Brian closes with a simple seven-day audit any business owner can run to find — and close — the gap between what they say and what they do. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 861. How the Best Entrepreneurs Control the Volume

Every situation in your life has a volume knob — a dispute, a deal, a disagreement, a decision that won't stop nagging at you. Some deserve to be loud. Most don't. In this episode, Brian breaks down a skill he calls "volume control": knowing which situations deserve your energy and which ones to quietly turn down. He walks through three places most of us get it wrong — the legal fight that isn't worth the mental cost, the argument where being right is just a distraction, and the investment that keeps you up at night. Then he gets to the real reason the knob stays cranked up: ego. Ego is the voice that says walking away means losing — and it's good at disguising itself as principle. Brian shares three ways to catch it and turn the volume down, so you can pour your attention into the few things that actually move your life forward. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 860. The Hidden Cost of Yes

Every yes is a no — you just can't see the no yet. In this episode, Brian breaks down the hidden math of trade-offs: why every commitment you take on silently costs you something else, and why the most dangerous decisions aren't between good and bad, but between good and great. Drawing on Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, Joseph Juran's "vital few versus trivial many," Greg McKeown's Essentialism, and Derek Sivers' famous "Hell Yeah or No" rule, Brian shares a three-question filter you can run every meaningful decision through — and a one-week assignment to buy back time you didn't know you were losing. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 859.The Math They Never Showed You: How Ordinary People Build Millions

Most people believe building wealth is hard — that it's reserved for the connected, the lucky, or the early. In this episode, Brian dismantles that belief with real math. He lays out the three-step process anyone can run — make money, automate your investing with a wealth coordination account, and buy only assets that appreciate — then walks through three concrete examples of compounding in action: a $350k-at-a-time real estate strategy that builds over $1 million in equity in about a decade, a maxed-out Roth IRA that nearly quadruples over twenty years, and a simple $1,000-a-month index fund habit that grows to roughly $760,000. The hard part isn't the math. It's starting — and leaving it alone. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 858. The 4 Sources of Confidence - and the One Mistake That Blocks All of Them

Most people wait to feel confident before they act. In this episode, Brian breaks down why that has the order exactly backwards — confidence isn't a feeling you wait for, it's evidence you collect. Drawing on performance psychologist Dr. Gio Valiante's recent conversation on The Knowledge Project and decades of research by psychologist Albert Bandura, Brian walks through the four sources of confidence: mastery experiences, vicarious experience, self-talk, and how you interpret your body's signals — plus a simple seven-day practice for manufacturing proof that you can do hard things. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. 857. There Are Only 5 Ways to Win. Which One Is Yours?

Everyone in your market is working hard — so why do only a few actually win? In this episode, Brian breaks down performance psychologist Dr. Gio Valiante's five ways to win: talent, work ethic, process, differentiation, and hiring. Drawing on Valiante's work with PGA Tour golfers, the Buffalo Bills, and elite investors, Brian reframes the model for business owners — and makes the case that you don't need all five.
