The Shame of Talking About It with Michelle Valiukenas

Michelle Valiukenas never planned to be quiet about losing her daughter Colette. After a high-risk pregnancy, an unexpected hospitalization, and nine days in the NICU, Michelle didn't just grieve, she built The Colette Louise Tisdahl Foundation to help other families navigate the financial strain of complicated pregnancies, NICU stays, and loss. But the work didn't erase the shame. The shame of not being able to conceive without IVF. The shame of a body that couldn't stay pregnant. The shame of not wanting to be pregnant again, even while desperately wanting a child. The shame that settled in every time someone whispered their own story of loss, as if grief were still a crime to name out loud. In this conversation, Michelle walks through the moments that cracked her open and the language she's learned to use when people don't know what to say. She talks about clearing a room by mentioning her daughter who died, about the relief and the guilt of using a gestational carrier, and about the power of just saying "I don't know what to say" instead of offering a platitude that lands like a slap. This is not a tidy story about transformation. It's about living with grief, sitting in the discomfort, and refusing to make other people more comfortable at your own expense.Learn more about Michelle's work at https://colettelouise.com/ and follow along at https://www.instagram.com/colettelouisetisdahl

Summer Shame: Letting Go of the Perfect Summer Pressure

Summer is supposed to be the magical season, and most of us are already behind on it by day three. We get into the "am I a bad mom" spiral that did not exist when we were kids, the '90s summer trend and what it is actually asking of us, and the wider pressure to go and do that hits whether you have kids or not. We talk about how much freedom is the right amount of freedom for young kids, the case for telling everyone in the house that boredom is not an emergency, and the small things keeping each of us going this week. We each name something we are letting go of this summer.Topics CoveredSummer shame and the pressure to have the perfect summer, with or without kidsThe "am I a bad mom" spiral that did not exist in the '80s and '90sThe '90s summer trend and what it gets right and wrongHow much freedom is the right amount of freedom when your kid is youngThe shoulds we are each letting go of this summerLinks & ResourcesSubmit your own joy moment, a question for No Shame in Our Game, or apply to be on a show at practicalhug.com/submit

Shame of Not Belonging: Jiemi Gao on immigrating and finding your people

We sat down with Jiemi Gao, founder of Nori, to talk about shame, belonging, and what it actually takes to feel like you fit somewhere. Jiemi moved from Hangzhou, China to Canada at 12, spent months working through ESL workbooks on her own, and eventually realized the language gap was only part of what she was carrying. We got into why strangers can sometimes hold space better than the people closest to us, how empathy moves shame to the sidelines, and what Jiemi built on the other side of feeling like an outsider. We closed with moments of gratitude, including Lacey's daughter Iris, who has started asking big questions about meetings, people who have passed, and what it means to want bangs.Topics CoveredJiemi's experience moving from China to Canada at 12 and the shame of not fitting inWhy her MBA program at INSEAD was the first place she felt like she truly belongedHow small group discussions with strangers unlock honesty that conversations with close friends often don'tSara's own shame around hosting a "one and done" group for moms of single childrenLacey's daughter Iris asking questions about death, meetings, and bangsLinks & ResourcesLearn more about Nori.Submit your own joy moment, a question for No Shame in Our Game, or apply to be on our shows.

    Lazy: The Shame Turducken

Sara's been carrying shame about being lazy since she was a kid waking up to chore lists on the kitchen table every summer morning. In this episode, she and Lacey get into where that shame actually came from, what it did to her body when it went unchecked, and how she secretly loved a week on the couch with a heating pad and a bag of saltines. They work through the difference between actual laziness and rest that feels forbidden, land on a pretty good definition of what lazy even means, and Sara has a real-time breakthrough about personal operating manuals and butter knives. The "what's making you happy" at the end involves sunflowers and a new room setup.Topics CoveredSara's childhood chore lists and what her kid brain decided they meant about belongingThe wedding day moment that captures her mom's worldview in one sentenceWhy Sara secretly loved being couch-bound with an ulcer and what that says about permissionLacey's two-year-old pushing back on "hardworking" as an affirmationThe butter knife breakthrough: what happens when you try to operate outside your own manualLinks & Resources"Rest is Productive" merchSubmit your own question for No Shame in Our Game or apply to be a guest: practicalhug.com/submit

Big Feelings & Shame Origins: Part 2

This one got big in the best way. We started with Lacey's shame story about being called "too dramatic" as a kid — and somewhere along the way, we landed on silk robes, talk show beds, and the power of living your life out loud. Turns out, when you're told your feelings are too much, you learn to shrink. And when you shrink long enough, you start to believe the universe doesn't want big things for you. Spoiler: it does.Sara and Lacey dig into how childhood shame becomes the box we live in as adults — until we realize we get to rewrite the rules. They talk about the difference between shame that protects and shame that diminishes, why "of course it's me" is a perfectly reasonable thought to have, and how chronic illness might just become a feature instead of a bug. It's messy and hopeful and honestly, a little bit of a breakthrough in real time.If you've ever felt too much, too loud, or too whatever — this one's for you. Listen in and see what happens when you stop asking permission to take up space.

Good, Better, Best: The Bare Minimum Is a Foundation, Not a Failure

In this episode, we're diving deep into one of our favorite Practical Hug tools: Good, Better, Best. This framework is all about giving yourself a menu of options instead of one impossible "perfect" standard — and then actually celebrating whichever version you accomplish. We talk about the mindset shift that makes "the bare minimum" a foundation instead of a failure, how Lacey learned this tool while navigating chronic illness, how Sara is using it in real time to prepare for a trip while managing pain, and how it shows up as a daily prioritization tool. We also get into why self-help can feel icky and what makes Practical Hug different: you're not doing this alone, and there is no finish line. What is Cleaning Anyway?

SummaryCleaning isn’t just about making things look pretty; it’s all about how your space feels! Lacey and Sara dive into the overwhelming world of cleaning products and tackle the big question: what is cleaning, anyway? With so many products claiming to be the magic solution—from natural options to high-tech concoctions—it's easy to feel lost in the cleaning aisle. The hosts break it down into three simple steps: picking up, cleaning, and sanitizing, while emphasizing that cleaning is about removing dirt and grime, not just chasing after that “perfect” shine. So join us as we explore the ins and outs of cleaning, share some laughs, and remind you that it's perfectly okay if your home isn’t always Instagram-ready!Takeaways: Cleaning is more than just a chore; it's about creating a space that feels good. The aisle of cleaning products can be overwhelming, but starting with multipurpose cleaners is a great approach. Understanding the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting can help simplify your cleaning routine. Everyone has their own comfort level with cleanliness, so focus on what works for you and your home. It's important to find the balance between cleanliness and time management in your daily life. Cleaning doesn't have to be shame-based; it can be about maintaining comfort and utility in your space. Full DescriptionIn this episode, Lacey and Sara dive deep into the philosophy of cleaning - not just what products to use, but questioning WHY we clean in the first place! We had such a meaningful conversation about the shame and guilt many people carry around their cleaning habits. We talked about how important it is to find YOUR comfort level with cleaning, not what someone else thinks you should do.We explored how cleaning standards should reflect your current life situation rather than some arbitrary ideal. Lacey shared her personal journey with cleaning shame and how she's healing from it, focusing on how her home FEELS rather than how it LOOKS. Sara made this great point about asking yourself whether an unclean area bothers you genuinely or if it's just societal expectations making you feel bad.We ended up transforming what was supposed to be a simple Q&A about cleaning products into this wonderful philosophical discussion about removing shame from home maintenance. Lacey even shared a funny moment about cutting her daughter's curly hair in the kitchen and only cleaning up that specific spot while leaving other messes - and being okay with that! Sara mentioned her gratitude for routines, and Lacey couldn't agree more.
