Season 5: Episode 137: The Human Side of Leadership™: What Are You Carrying Into the Room?
Send us Fan MailYour team is reading you before you ever say a word. They notice the rushed entrance, the change in your tone, the unusually short response, the tension you're carrying from the meeting before theirs. They may have no idea what happened, but when you're the leader, people naturally try to make sense of what they're experiencing. In Episode 137 of No Silver Spoons, Sarah Beth Herman continues The Human Side of Leadership summer series with a deeply personal conversation about emotional intelligence, integrity, confidentiality, and the responsibility leaders have for what they bring into a room.Sarah shares a story from her early thirties about an annual performance review she still remembers years later. She was overseeing more than 30 dental practices, had taken on significantly more responsibility, and walked into the meeting expecting her compensation to reflect the value she was bringing to the organization. What stayed with her wasn't actually the raise. It was the room. Before the conversation really began, she could sense something had changed in the leader sitting across from her. Looking back now, after 12 years of owning and leading her own company, Sarah sees that experience very differently. The conversation raises a bigger question:What are you carrying into the rooms you're responsible for? This episode explores the research behind emotional contagion and emotional intelligence, but it also goes somewhere leadership conversations don't often go: the responsibility that comes with access. As leaders grow, they gain access to more information. They know what's happening financially. They know who's struggling. People confide in them. They sit in conversations others don't. They may know personal details about employees, clients, and the business that most people never hear. But access is not permission.Inspired by something Sarah encountered while completing HIPAA certification at Dentistry Support, this episode introduces a different way to think about the idea of "minimum necessary" in leadership. Not as a HIPAA rule applied outside its proper context, but as a question leaders can ask themselves about the information, emotions, assumptions, and experiences they carry from one room into another.Because emotional intelligence isn't about becoming emotionless. It's about becoming aware enough to recognize what belongs in the room and what doesn't.In This EpisodeSarah explores why a leader's emotional presence can affect an entire room, what research on emotional contagion teaches us about the way feelings move through teams, and why emotional intelligence involves much more than staying calm. She also discusses the difference between self-awareness and self-minimization, including an important lesson she wishes she'd understood earlier in her career:You can know where you need to grow without pretending you don't know where you're already strong. The episode moves into the ethical side of leadership and asks what happens as leaders gain access to increasingly sensitive information. Sarah challenges leaders to consider whether everything they can know is something they actually need to know, and whether information entrusted to them is influencing decisions where it doesn't belong. Most importantly, she asks leaders to examine whether frustration from one conversation is quietly becoming someone else's burden in the next.Key TakeawaysHaving an emotion is not the same thing as handing your emotion to everybody else.Emotional intelligence does not require leaders to pretend everything is fine. Sometimes saying, "I'm frustrated this morning, but it has nothing to do with anyone on this call," creates far more stability than forcing everyone to guess.Self-awareness does not require self-minimization.Knowing your weaknesses shouldn't require pretending you don't know your strengths.People experience more than your words. They experience tone, silence, hesitation, urgency, body language, and consistency. Leaders cannot control every interpretation, but they can become more intentional about what they're communicating.Leadership gives you access. Access is not permission.Knowing something does not automatically give you permission to repeat it, carry it into another conversation, or allow it to shape an unrelated decision.Integrity matters when people don't have all the information.Sometimes leadership means making a principled decision even when sharing confidential information would make that decision easier for others to understand. That's Good MomentThis week's actionable challenge is intentionally simple. Before one meeting every day, give yourself ten seconds. Before you walk through the door, click Join, or pick up the phone, ask yourself:What am I carrying right now?Does it belong in this conversation? What does the person on the other side of this interaction actually need from me?You may realize you're still irritated about the meeting you just left. You may recognize that something you know about the person is influencing the way you're approaching them. You may discover you're worried about something that hasn't even happened yet.Or you may realize you're completely fine. The point isn't to always change something. The point is to notice.Because leaders who don't examine what they're carrying can unintentionally make everybody else carry it too.Leaders who notice have a choice.Quotes From Episode 137"Having an emotion is not the same thing as handing your emotion to everybody else.""Self-awareness does not require self-minimization.""Access is not permission.""Integrity is also who you are when everybody is watching, but they don't have all the information you have.""Just because I'm carrying something difficult doesn't mean everybody who interacts with me that day needs to carry a piece of it too.""Sometimes the most emotionally intelligent thing you can do isn't hide what you're feeling. It's give people enough context that they don't have to create their own.""Leadership isn't something we perform for people. It's something people experience from us.""We get to choose what enters the room with us."Research MentionedBarsade, S. G. (2002). Season 5: Episode 136: The Human Side of Leadership™: Stop Trying to Keep Everyone Happy
Send us Fan MailIn this No Silver Spoons episode from the “Human Side of Leadership” summer series, the host (a CEO at Dentistry Support) argues that good leadership doesn’t require being liked all the time, but it does require kindness, respect, clarity, and accountability. She distinguishes being liked from being trusted, and kindness from people-pleasing, warning that measuring leadership by others’ happiness leads to softened feedback, postponed conversations, and managing reactions instead of leading. Citing Gallup data on workplace respect and research on cultural intelligence (CQ), she explains how leaders should adapt communication across different backgrounds without abandoning standards, offering examples for handling tears, fairness complaints, quiet employees, and difficult high performers. She emphasizes that avoiding accountability harms the whole team, that retention can’t be pursued at any cost, and closes with practical reflection questions and decision tests for leaders.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 135: The Human Side of Leadership™: The Leader Your Team Actually Needs Is Probably Not Who You Think
Send us Fan MailEvery leader has asked the question."How do I become better?"But what if we've been asking the wrong question all along? In this episode of The Human Side of Leadership™ Summer Series, Sarah Beth Herman challenges one of the biggest myths in modern leadership: the belief that successful leaders all look, sound, and lead the same way.Drawing inspiration from Seth Godin's Purple Cow Theory and a leadership lesson shared by MrBeast, the world's largest YouTube creator, Sarah explores why remarkable leaders aren't the ones who imitate what everyone else is doing—they're the ones courageous enough to become the most authentic version of themselves.Whether you lead a dental practice, a business, a nonprofit, or simply influence the people around you every day, this conversation will encourage you to stop chasing someone else's leadership style and start building trust through consistency, character, and authenticity.Because your team doesn't need another copy. They need you.In This EpisodeWhy comparison quietly steals confidence from even experienced leaders. The difference between learning from great leaders and trying to become them. What Seth Godin's Purple Cow Theory teaches us about standing out without performing. The leadership lesson Sarah Beth learned from MrBeast's approach to creating remarkable work. Why consistency builds trust faster than charisma. How authenticity becomes one of the greatest competitive advantages a leader can develop.Practical questions every leader should ask before trying to imitate someone else's success.Key TakeawaysAuthentic leadership isn't about being louder. It's about being genuine.Your team remembers how you show up on ordinary days far more than inspirational speeches.Learning from others should strengthen your leadership—not replace it.Trust is built through consistency, honesty, and character.Becoming remarkable often begins by becoming comfortable with who you already are.Memorable Quotes"The world doesn't need another copy. Your team doesn't either." "Learning from someone should expand who you are, not erase who you are." "People don't remember perfect leaders. They remember trustworthy ones." "Confidence doesn't have to be loud. Character rarely is." "Your team isn't asking you to become someone they admire online. They're asking you to become someone they can trust in real life." "Extraordinary leadership is built on ordinary Tuesdays." "Consistency will always outlast charisma." "The greatest competitive advantage you'll ever have is becoming unmistakably yourself."That's GoodIf there's one thing I hope you remember from today's conversation, it's this:Stop asking..."How can I become more like them?"Start asking..."How can I become the leader my people actually need?"Study great leaders.Read their books.Learn from their experiences. But don't confuse learning with becoming. The strongest leaders aren't copies. They're originals.Maybe your Purple Cow isn't doing something no one has ever done before.Maybe it's having the courage to lead with integrity, consistency, and authenticity in a world that's constantly asking you to perform. That's good.Resources MentionedGodin, S. Season 5: Episode 134: The Human Side of Leadership™: The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to The Human Side of Leadership™ Summer Series, a special ten-part series on No Silver Spoons where we go beyond business strategies and leadership clichés to explore what truly drives the way we think, lead, communicate, and make decisions. In this episode, The Stories We Tell Ourselves, Sarah Beth Herman explores one of the most overlooked forces shaping our leadership, relationships, businesses, and lives: our inner narrative.Have you ever noticed how two people can experience the exact same event and walk away believing completely different things? One sees rejection. Another sees redirection. One sees failure. Another sees feedback. The difference isn't always what happened. More often, it's the story we attach to what happened.Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, real business experiences, and personal reflection, Sarah Beth challenges listeners to question the assumptions they've accepted as truth. This isn't another conversation about positive thinking or "changing your mindset." It's about understanding how our brains naturally fill in the gaps when we don't have complete information—and how those stories quietly influence the decisions we make every day.If you've ever questioned your worth after a setback, assumed the worst in a relationship, or allowed an old belief to shape your future, this episode will encourage you to pause, become curious, and ask a better question.Because sometimes the greatest breakthrough doesn't come from changing your circumstances. It comes from changing the story you've been believing. In This EpisodeWhy our brains create stories before we have all the facts. The neuroscience behind why we seek certainty over accuracy. How confirmation bias quietly reinforces the beliefs we already hold. Why two people can experience the same event and create completely different futures. How the stories we rehearse influence our leadership, relationships, businesses, and personal growth.A practical framework for recognizing when your inner narrative is shaping your decisions more than reality itself.Memorable Quotes"We don't make decisions based on reality. We make decisions based on the meaning we've assigned to reality.""The event isn't always what changes your life. The story you attach to the event often does.""Not every thought deserves your trust.""Fear wants to finish the story before it's written. Wisdom is willing to wait another page.""The stories you rehearse become the expectations you carry.""Sometimes clarity doesn't come from finding the answer. Season 5: Episode 133: The Human Side of Leadership™: People Don't Leave Jobs Overnight
Send us Fan MailWhat if resignation isn't the beginning of the story? What if it's simply the moment you finally realize someone has already been leaving for months? In this episode of No Silver Spoons, Sarah Beth Herman explores one of the most overlooked realities of leadership: people rarely disengage overnight. Whether it's an employee, a client, a patient, a friend, or even a family member, relationships often begin to drift long before anyone says goodbye.Drawing from more than two decades of leadership experience, building multiple organizations, and hiring over 700 people across nine countries, Sarah Beth shares the lessons she's learned about recognizing the quiet signs of disengagement before they're impossible to ignore. You'll also discover what neuroscience reveals about psychological safety, why people need more than compensation to thrive, and how small moments of encouragement can completely change someone's trajectory. This episode isn't about preventing every resignation. Season 5: Episode 132: The Human Side of Leadership™: Why Smart People Stay Stuck
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman continues her 10-part series, The Human Side of Leadership, with an episode subtitled “Why Smart People Stay Stuck,” exploring how being stuck can look productive or successful while real change is avoided. She argues smart people don’t stay stuck due to lack of information, but because the brain’s primary job is survival, constantly predicting risk based on past experiences; citing Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, she explains the brain is trying to protect us, not sabotage us. Instead of seeking fearlessness, she encourages moving forward with fear in the “passenger seat,” taking small steps and practicing new behaviors. She discusses neuroplasticity, emphasizing that repeated actions rewire the brain, and references James Clear’s idea that each action is a vote for the person you believe you are. She closes by urging listeners to take one small step today and previews next week’s topic: why great employees leave.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 130: The Brain Doesn't Care That You're Right: Why Facts Alone Rarely Change People
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman reflects on 130 episodes of No Silver Spoons and explains the podcast’s purpose: thinking together across dentistry, business, leadership, neuroscience, and entrepreneurship while encouraging listeners to question her rather than borrow certainty. Drawing on years of learning from books, coaches, clients, and experience building multiple companies, she argues there is no single blueprint for success—only pieces—and cites Daniel Kahneman’s line about being “blind to our blindness” to highlight human blind spots. She explores why people resist new information, focusing on cognitive dissonance, identity protection, and the brain’s core question of safety rather than truth, applying this to patient behavior and team change. She previews a 10-episode End of Summer Series on leadership psychology, decision-making, trust, communication, change, burnout, systems, patient behavior, and culture, and challenges listeners to stay curious and ask what someone might be protecting during disagreement.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 129: Why Patients Say, "I'll Think About It" and Never Call Back: The Treatment Acceptance Crisis in Dentistry
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman reflects on a dentist frustrated by unscheduled diagnosed treatment and argues the issue is often misnamed as “treatment acceptance” when it is really a decision-making problem rooted in uncertainty and perceived risk. Drawing on neuroscience and experience, she explains that patients can understand a diagnosis yet still hesitate because the brain treats uncertainty like danger, amplifying fears about cost, discomfort, surgery, or past trauma. She distinguishes explaining from reassuring, emphasizes that money is frequently not the primary barrier, and notes that unspoken concerns—trust, fear, overwhelm, or prior experiences—often drive delays that sound like “I’ll think about it.” High-performing practices focus less on closing and more on listening, curiosity, and emotional intelligence to uncover the real issue, build trust over time, and create conditions where better decisions happen naturally.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 128: The $100,000 Front Desk Mistake: What Insurance Verification Errors Really Cost Dental Practices
Send us Fan MailHost Sara Beth Herman argues that going out of network isn’t a strategy if a dental team doesn’t understand the revenue cycle and can’t consistently verify and explain benefits, collect patient portions, document limitations, track and appeal claims, and communicate clearly. She reframes insurance verification as revenue protection, patient communication, treatment acceptance, and trust, warning that “active” coverage isn’t the same as “covered” or “payable.” Herman cautions that software and AI tools can help but don’t replace human judgment, and that overwhelmed, under-trained, burnt-out front offices create costly patterns—missed waiting periods, frequency limits, annual max usage, downgrades, attachment errors, and incorrect posting—that add up to write-offs, delays, and upset patients. She urges practices to audit upstream processes, improve training or support (including outsourcing), manage tone and clarity with patients, and make data-driven decisions amid increased denials, payer scrutiny, and 2026 CDT code changes.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 127: Elevating Dentistry: Secrets of a Sales Pro
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman hosts a podcast swap episode featuring her interview with Dr. Howard Farran focused on dental insurance, billing, and practice operations. Farran raises concerns about young dentists facing debt, DSOs, stagnant insurance fees, and staffing shortages; Herman argues dentistry has been overcomplicated and urges removing “noise” with simple standards: work every outstanding claim every 10 days, use portals and EFTs, and collect what you produce in the same month. They discuss credentialing, being in- vs out-of-network, assignment of benefits, and payment slowdowns near quarter/year ends, plus a VA example where approvals and payments can be 3–10 days despite office misconceptions. Herman explains Dentistry Support’s virtual front office model, daily/monthly reporting, and recommends hiring non-dental sales talent for the front desk, incentivizing 98–101% collections through pre-collecting and payment options like Klarna and Affirm.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 126: Anatomy of an Angry Patient
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman explains that angry dental patients are usually the result of earlier breakdowns—especially assumptions and gaps in communication—rather than isolated incidents like a bill or negative review. She argues communication should be measured by patient understanding, not information delivered or signatures obtained, and notes dissatisfaction in healthcare is often driven by communication issues. Herman describes common dental office personality types (rockstar, approval seeker, controller, relationship builder, quiet observer) and how each can unintentionally contribute to confusion, emphasizing that acknowledgement matters before explanations and that “clear is kind.” She identifies five non-clinical hotspots where frustration is created—phone, scheduling, treatment presentation, insurance, and billing—and offers a response framework: slow down, listen, understand, clarify, solve. She also highlights Dentistry Support Academy’s training programs and shares the show’s 2026 Best of the Valley podcast award from Phoenix Magazine.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 125: What People Think Success Looks Like vs. What It Actually Looks Like Sarah Beth Herman | Founder of Dentistry Support | PHOENIX Magazine 2026 Health-Care Heroes
Send us Fan MailHost Sara Beth Herman of No Silver Spoons shares that she was named one of Phoenix Magazine’s 2026 Healthcare Heroes, explaining she paused to fully acknowledge the milestone and emphasizing that the recognition reflects operational impact in healthcare rather than transactional visibility. She discusses continuing to build amid uncertainty, including taking a major private risk with her husband, and warns that others’ advice often reflects their own fears, requiring discernment. Drawing from her work at Dentistry Support, she frames leadership as stewardship—quiet, consequential operational work that creates healthier teams and patient outcomes—and contrasts durable cultivation with performative success. She notes she went ten years in business before her first publication and credits “invisible preparation” for readiness. In her “That’s Good” moment, she encourages listeners not to mistake slow seasons for failure, shares completing an MBA and pursuing a second master’s, and credits her team for collective excellence, redefining success as integrity, peace, sustainability, and relationships.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 124: Leadership, Discomfort & Learning to Be the Janitor First
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman challenges the popular phrase “not my circus, not my monkeys,” arguing that while boundaries matter, emotional disengagement is increasingly being confused with wisdom, quietly eroding workplace and relational culture through breakdowns in communication, trust, and shared responsibility. Drawing on her leadership experiences—being denied a hard-earned promotion, having offices reassigned after building strong teams, and being dismissed when requesting travel compensation—she explains how feeling unsupported drives self-protection and avoidance, reinforced by neuroscience and the brain’s desire to escape discomfort. She contrasts grounded leaders who regulate and stay present with reactive people who escape, critiques social-media performative leadership, and shares Sidney Weinberg’s rise at Goldman Sachs as a lesson in serving before leading. She emphasizes that real leadership is steady ownership and emotional resilience, and she thanks sponsor Dentistry Support while previewing an upcoming Phoenix Magazine feature.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 123: Dentists Are Losing Google Reviews… Here’s What’s REALLY Happening
Send us Fan MailHost Sara Beth Herman explains recent Google Business Profile and Google Maps review disruptions affecting dental offices and other local businesses, including disappearing reviews, paused review activity, profile flags, and ranking fluctuations. She cites Google’s April 16, 2026 announcement of stronger AI and Gemini-powered detection of suspicious review behavior, which can trigger review removals, temporary review pauses, owner alerts, and warning banners, and notes Google’s 2025 enforcement numbers (292M policy-violating reviews removed/blocked, 79M suspicious edits blocked, 13M fake profiles removed). She also highlights the FTC’s fake review rule effective Oct. 21, 2024, making deceptive practices a legal and ethics issue. Herman urges practices to stop relying solely on reviews, avoid QR-code/third-party redirects and on-site geotagged reviews, request honest feedback ethically, and diversify growth through websites, modern SEO, educational content, advertising, referrals, and stronger internal systems.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 122: Stepping into Grace: My Commencement Story
Send us Fan MailThe host of No Silver Spoons shares a rare personal episode documenting her trip from Colorado to Michigan for Grace Christian University graduation weekend, where she received her MBA and delivered the commencement speech she previously announced in episode 121. She describes university-hosted events, a banquet where she was unexpectedly given the Delta Epsilon Chi Award (noting only 7% of graduates receive it), a cold-weather campus photo shoot, and a memorable moment when her daughter cheered during her MBA hooding. She explains the ceremony is edited to 28 minutes and available visually on YouTube. In her commencement address, Sarah Beth Herman reflects on hardship, reconciliation during 17 hospice days with her estranged mother, faith, entrepreneurship with her husband, becoming a mother to her daughter, and lessons on renewing the mind, rejecting fear, stepping forward like Esther, and leaving people better than you found them.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 121: The Call I Didn’t Expect—and the Faithfulness That Built It
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman explains that major “arrival” moments are not what create momentum; they are evidence of long-term faithfulness shown through keeping promises, leading with integrity, consistency without feedback, and making values-aligned decisions even when costly. She emphasizes that leadership and sustainable business are built on normal days, repeated choices, and trust rather than chasing visibility. She shares a recent unexpected example: Grace Christian University’s President Kemper called to ask her to be the commencement speaker for the 2026 graduating class, despite her having finished her MBA in December 2025 and not planning to attend graduation. The invitation made her reflect on years of late nights and persistence, reinforcing her message to stay faithful, lead well in the mundane, and be ready for unforeseen opportunities.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 120: Ethical Dentistry: Money, Signatures, and Trust
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth, CEO of Dentistry Support, responds to reactions to episode 119 about her family being pressured and told they couldn’t leave a dental office without paying $1,460, arguing the root issue isn’t insurance or a signed treatment plan but breakdowns in communication about money. She explains that teams often hide behind signatures and “that’s how we do it” because they’re uncomfortable discussing finances, and emphasizes the missing step is confirming understanding by having patients repeat expected costs and options. She outlines warning patterns (patients saying “I didn’t know,” staff saying “we told them,” rushing, same-day add-ons, blaming insurance) and a remedy: slow down, remove pressure, take ownership, clarify, explore options, and protect patient dignity. She provides sample dialogues for potential balances, denied estimates, appeals, and non-ideal outcomes, and promotes free trainings and mentorship through Dentistry Support.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 119: They Wouldn’t Let My Family Leave Until They Paid $1,460
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth, CEO of Dentistry Support, shares a personal story about referring her financially struggling family to a trusted dental office with a state aid plan, after clearly instructing the front office to pre-authorize care and call her for any out-of-pocket costs. After an initially excellent experience, her stepmom agreed to same-day additional treatment during a crown adjustment without understanding it carried a $1,460 balance the office said had been denied since February; the family was told they couldn’t leave until it was paid, leading to a chaotic, shouting phone call and distress for her parents. Sarah Beth paid but emphasizes the issue was mishandled communication, leadership, and accountability. She outlines lessons: honor financial-responsibility notes, signatures aren’t understanding, collect balances upfront, pursue appeals and alternatives, de-escalate to protect patients, and recognize one bad moment can erase many good ones.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 118: Leaders Go First
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman, CEO of Dentistry Support and host of No Silver Spoons, explains her leadership philosophy of “leaders go first” in responsibility, honesty, accountability, steadiness, and learning—especially when facing criticism, mistakes, client losses, or bad reviews. She argues that avoiding discomfort is image management, while leadership is exposure that sets the tone for psychological safety and candor. Drawing on experiences with the Better Business Bureau (including Dentistry Support winning the 2025 Torch Award for ethics), she discusses why a mix of reviews can be transparent and useful, and how to evaluate criticism without panicking or dismissing it. She references research and thinkers including Amy Edmondson, Brené Brown, Satya Nadella, and Jeff Bezos, emphasizing a “learn-it-all” culture, self-compassion, and measuring leadership by how effectively you respond when things go wrong.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 117: The Real Reason Your Dental Practice Feels Heavy
Send us Fan MailSarah Beth Herman, CEO of Dentistry Support, explains that businesses feel “heavy” not because people are failing but because systems are inefficient, and encourages leaders to prioritize improved efficiency over perfection. She notes that pushing teams toward perfection increases stress and burnout without meaningfully improving performance, and argues that clarity, structure, and support prevent most failures. While AI can help, it cannot remove real-world complexity—especially in dentistry with inconsistent insurance and unpredictable patient paths—so the goal should be “better,” not perfect. She highlights common friction points like phones, eligibility, and billing/AR that create missed opportunities, confusion, and lost revenue, and emphasizes fixing processes before scaling. She describes Dentistry Support’s onboarding, SOP development, weekly meetings, and a $300 six-month discount code “podcast,” then closes with advice to stop waiting for perfect conditions and improve one decision at a time.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 115: What Happens When Your Dental Front Office Finally Gets the Support It Needs
Send us Fan MailIn the previous episode of No Silver Spoons, we talked about one of the biggest operational misconceptions in dentistry:The belief that front office teams need to be perfect in order for a practice to run smoothly. But perfection isn’t the real goal.Efficiency is.In this follow-up episode, Sarah Herman continues the conversation by exploring what actually happens when a dental practice reduces administrative overload and restructures the way work gets done.Because when front office teams are no longer buried in insurance verification, billing follow-ups, and administrative backlog, something powerful happens. They regain the time and focus needed to support the activities that truly drive practice growth.Things like:• Answering new patient calls • Filling schedule gaps • Supporting treatment acceptance • Maintaining recare systems • Strengthening patient relationshipsThis episode explores the real impact of giving dental teams the operational support they need. What You'll Learn in This Episode• Why many dental practices feel overwhelmed even when teams are working hard • The difference between busy activity and revenue-producing activity • What happens when front office teams gain back hours of their day • How administrative support improves both team morale and patient experience • Why operational clarity helps dentists focus on leadership and growth • What implementation actually looks like when adding administrative supportThe Question Every Dentist Should AskIf your front office suddenly had three to four extra hours every day, what would they focus on?Would they:• Follow up with unscheduled treatment • Return missed calls from potential patients • Fill cancellations more quickly • Strengthen recare systems • Improve patient communicationThese are the activities that move practices forward. But when administrative tasks consume the day, they often receive the least attention.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 114: Efficiency Over Perfection: The Front Office Problem Every Dental Practice Is Ignoring
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman argues that dentistry’s biggest operational misunderstanding is expecting perfection from front office teams in systems not designed for it, creating stress, frustration, and lost profitability. She says dentistry has a structure problem: the front office becomes a catchall for phones, patients, insurance verification, claims, payments, aging follow-up, scheduling, and more, which crowds out revenue-producing work like answering new patient calls, scheduling treatment, filling cancellations, protecting recare, and improving treatment acceptance. She reviews practice finances (60–65% overhead; payroll often 25–30% of collections but frequently 45–49%) and the hidden costs of hiring, noting practices are often misallocated rather than overworked. She explains why AI can assist but human judgment is still required for insurance complexity, and describes Dentistry Support’s flat-rate model handling eligibility, billing, phones, and reporting so in-office teams can focus on growth, with a ~10-business-day onboarding and 24/7 HIPAA-compliant chat.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 112: Your Revenue Starts at the phones
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman discusses why phone skills and customer service are critical in dentistry, calling the phones the “front door” to revenue, culture, and patient experience. Drawing on her 2017 role as chief of training and talent development for a 1,500-employee dental group across 45 locations, she explains that trust is built in the first minutes of a call and that customer service is a trained skill, not a personality trait. She debunks common beliefs that phones are “fine,” patients will call back, and customer service comes naturally, emphasizing systems and practice-specific SOPs. Practical tools include warm call openings, confident information gathering, reflective listening, and clear next steps. She outlines the “tell, show, do, review” training method and frames phone performance as a leadership responsibility, then closes with Dentistry Support resources and services.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 111: You Are Not Stuck: How the Brain Learns Growth and Why Entrepreneurs Must Change to Scale
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman explains that many exhausted business owners and leaders aren’t truly stuck—they’ve rehearsed the same patterns until they feel permanent. Drawing on neuroscience, she describes how real change comes from repeated experience and neural rewiring, not insight alone, because the brain prefers familiar pathways that require less energy. She connects this to entrepreneurship and scaling, arguing that business growth demands personal and identity growth, and that stability can feel unsafe to a nervous system trained in survival mode—sometimes leading entrepreneurs to unconsciously create chaos. She emphasizes that leadership maturity is shown by staying regulated while growing, since teams mirror a leader’s nervous system and culture becomes reactive or hesitant based on leadership patterns. Change requires alignment of behavior, environment, and repetition, plus willingness to be a beginner and practice consistent new responses. She shares an analogy about training her French bulldog, Cash, to address food aggression without changing his core personality—expanding capacity rather than becoming someone else. The episode’s takeaway: you are adaptable, growth is gradual, leadership requires identity evolution, and businesses scale only as far as the leader is willing to grow, encouraging listeners to study and repeat what successful people do, then share, rate, review, and reach out via show notes for guest suggestions.Support the showSOCIALS:No Silver Spoons®: InstagramDentistry Support: Instagram | Facebook | LinkedinThe Dental Collaborative: FacebookSarah Beth Herman: LinkedIn | Personal Bio | LinksFree Training for Dental OfficesDISCLAIMER:The content provided in this podcast, including by Sarah Beth Herman and any affiliated guests, is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice, including but not limited to medical, legal, or business consulting services. Season 5: Episode 110: I Am on a Winning Streak: How We Tell Ourselves Shapes How We Lead
Send us Fan MailHost Sarah Beth Herman discusses how repeated self-talk shapes mindset, nervous system regulation, and leadership, explaining neuroplasticity and how the brain reinforces the thoughts it repeats. She shares her own shift from self-criticism to the mantra “I’m on a winning streak,” describing how changing internal language helped her lead with more patience, trust, and consistency across her businesses. The episode reframes “winning” as alignment, peace, and steady progress, noting that visible achievements (including upcoming features on the front page of two magazines) are built through quiet, consistent discipline. She offers practical steps: choose a believable mantra, notice when inner dialogue tightens and pause, lead yourself with clarity and accountability rather than shame, and prioritize consistency over intensity.
