Can a Hair Test Detect Autism? with Dr. Manish Arora

What if a single strand of hair could reveal your body's chemical exposure history, all the way back to the womb? Dr. Manish Arora, environmental epidemiologist, CEO of LinusBio, and professor at Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, joins Nurse Rosa Hart to explain why your environment shapes your health more than your genes ever could. Dr. Arora's team developed the TRACED test, an at-home, hair-based exposure test that measures 15 essential and toxic elements (including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum) with time-stamped resolution across roughly 30 days. Unlike blood or urine tests that capture a single moment, TRACED gives you a molecular movie of your exposure over time; no clinic visit, no needles, no blood draw. His research also earned FDA Breakthrough Designation for an autism biomarker detectable as early as one month old. 🎧 Now available in the Health Podcast Library 🔔 Subscribe for weekly conversations at the intersection of nursing, innovation, and health Timestamps 0:00 — Intro & Dr. Arora's background 0:51 — The story behind his name (named himself at age 3!) 2:43 — What is Linus Bio and why he founded it 5:10 — Personal journey: triplet daughters & a misdiagnosis of autism 8:38 — Why genomic medicine alone isn't enough 9:07 — Introducing the exposome: the complement to the genome 10:43 — How the TRACED hair-based test works 11:43 — Why hair vs. blood or urine testing 13:41 — TRACED: what it measures (lead, arsenic, aluminum, and more) 16:13 — Weekend vs. weekday exposure patterns 15:39 — How AI models interpret your results 17:05 — Making it accessible: no prescription needed, available on Amazon 17:38 — Why they bypassed the healthcare system intentionally 20:24 — The rhythm of cholesterol (and a Springsteen analogy) 23:43 — Clinical blind spots TRACED addresses 25:21 — PFAS, microplastics, phthalates — what's coming in the next version 30:00 — Wildfire community deployment (Eaton & Palisades fires) 35:33 — How academics can turn research into real-world products 36:42 — What it took to build a business from science 43:44 — How clinicians should interpret TRACED results 45:11 — TRACED for telehealth, longevity & remote communities 35:07 — The research-to-practice translation gap (13–17 years!) 46:27 — The billion-dollar question: newborn autism screening + universal exposome profiling 37:33 — ClearStrand ASD: screening for autism at 1 month old 43:55 — How to order TRACED (traced.life) & connect with Dr. Arora Connect & Resources TRACED test Linus Bio Dr. Manish Arora on LinkedIN Nurse Rosa Hart on LinkedIn & your favorite social media platform  @NurseRosaSpeaks Nurse Rosa's INsights is a nurse-led healthcare leadership and innovation podcast hosted by Rosa Hart. Supporting Unpaid Caregivers aka "Archangels" ft. Alexandra Drane

What if 40% of the people sitting in your waiting room, working on your team, or enrolled in your health plan were quietly carrying an invisible weight, and had no idea there was a name for what they were doing? Alexandra Drane has spent years hunting for those people. As co-founder and CEO of ARCHANGELS, a public benefit corporation, she's on a mission to find unpaid caregivers who don't identify as caregivers, and connect them to the employer benefits, health plan resources, and community supports already waiting for them. The barrier isn't access. It's recognition. In this conversation, Rosa and Alexandra dig into the science and the soul behind Archangels, including the intensity score (clear, yellow, red) that creates the "aha" moment caregivers didn't know they needed, the surprising data trails that reveal caregiving hiding inside every workforce, and what a stint as a Walmart cashier taught Alexandra about the real weight people carry through their days. They also go deep on stroke caregiving specifically, including the abrupt, total life shift that caregivers of stroke survivors experience, often with no warning and no roadmap. If you work in neurology, if you know a stroke caregiver, or if you are one, this conversation was made for you. What You'll Hear: - Why so many caregivers don't know they're caregivers, and what happens when they finally see themselves clearly - The Archangels intensity score and how a simple red/yellow/clear framework creates connection points instead of stigma - How Alexandra's prior company, Eliza, revealed that "life stress" is the biggest driver of health outcomes, and how that realization changed everything - A deeply personal story about glioblastoma, end-of-life care, and the lessons that shaped Archangels from the inside out - What working as a Walmart cashier revealed about the caregiving burden hiding in plain sight across the American workforce - The data employers and policymakers are now using to actually invest in caregiver support - What stroke does to a caregiver's daily reality, including the medication maze, the financial friction, and the emotional overnight shift - The free Care Badge that translates caregiving into professional skills and resume languageHow to connect with Archangels at archangels.work Chapters:01:46 What Archangels Does05:35 Finding Hidden Caregivers08:18 Intensity, Not Burden09:54 Why Alexandra Cares11:11 Eliza and Life Stress Data13:04 Glioblastoma and Hospice Lessons15:54 Walmart Origins19:28 Data to Drive Support23:54 Stroke Caregiving Reality28:30 Stroke Changes Everything29:53 Rethinking Caregiver Reality31:29 Banks and Caregiving Friction35:01 The Medication Maze and Employers37:34 Planning for the Care Crunch42:08 The Red Phone Support System42:59 The Billion-Dollar Care Plan47:36 Care Badge and Career Skills50:37 Where to Connect and Wrap Connect with Alexandra Drane and Archangels: Website: archangels.work Care Badge: archangels.work/care-badge Connect with Rosa:Website: nurserosaspeaks.com Instagram: @NurseRosaSpeaks LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rosa-hart-scrn/ Nurse Rosa's INsights is produced by Rosa Hart Media Consulting, LLC.

When Nurses Build in Health Tech ft. Susan Grant, Symplr

What happens when a critical care nurse becomes the executive building the tools she once struggled with? Susan Grant, DNP and Chief Clinical Officer at Symplr, has lived both sides. She has navigated 3 a.m. staffing crises, chased credentialing deadlines, and wondered if the systems she used were built with nurses in mind at all. Now she builds those systems, and she is doing it differently. In this episode, Rosa Hart sits down with Susan to unpack how AI-driven staffing tools, smarter scheduling, and nurse-led technology decisions can reduce burnout and bring predictability back to the bedside. If you have ever felt like the tools you use every day were designed without you in the room, this one is for you. In this episode: From critical care nurse to C-suite: Susan's leadership journey What Symplr does and why frontline nurses should know AI and predictive staffing: what nurses need to understand How to advocate for a seat at the tech decision table Credentialing, compliance, and cutting administrative burden Burnout as a systems design problem. When technology works the way nurses actually work, the burden lifts. Susan and Rosa challenge the idea that burnout is only a staffing issue. About Susan Grant Susan Grant, DNP, is the Chief Clinical Officer at Symplr, a healthcare operations software company specializing in workforce management, credentialing, compliance, and scheduling. Nurses building a Business of Hope ft. Matt Harless & Ashley Chancellor on Nurse Rosa's INsights

What happens when burnout breaks you open, and you decide to build something from the wreckage? In this episode, Rosa sits down with Ashley Chancellor and Matthew Harless, co-founders of The Business of Hope, to explore why burnout in healthcare goes far deeper than exhaustion, and what hope, as a functional tool, can actually do for clinicians on the front lines. Ashley Chancellor, RN spent 14 years as a nurse, much of it traveling the country as an ICU nurse. A fractured spine and severe PTSD during COVID took her off the floor indefinitely. What came next was a memoir, a coaching practice, and a mission: reminding the helpers of the world that they are worthy of the same compassion they give. Matthew Harless, RN brings over twenty years of clinical experience across psychiatric care, emergency medicine, rehabilitation, and hospital leadership. He's the creator of the Harless Method and the Hope Assessment, tools designed to help burned-out clinicians measure where their hope actually stands and start moving toward recovery instead of self-blame. Ep 72: Noise-Cancelling Cancer: How One Kentucky Kid Is Rewriting the Rules of Brain Tumor Treatment

What if the reason cancer wins isn't the tumor itself, but the silence it forces on your immune system? Aaron Edwards grew up in Henderson, Kentucky, left home at sixteen for a bold academic experiment, and spent a decade in biotech working on some of the most cutting-edge gene therapies in the world before asking himself a hard question: why does promising science so rarely reach patients? That question led him to Harvard, and then to KiraGen Bio, where he and his team are building what he calls "noise-cancelling headphones for cancer therapy." Using gene editing and AI, KiraGen is engineering immune cells that can finally hear through the suppressive environment solid tumors create, and fight back. In this episode, Aaron and Rosa talk about the journey from a small Kentucky town to the frontier of CAR-T cell therapy, what glioblastoma patients and their families need to know right now, and why the future of cancer treatment should show up in your community clinic, not just at elite academic centers. In this episode: Why CAR-T therapy transforms blood cancers but has largely failed solid tumors until now The "noise-cancelling" science behind KiraGen's approach to glioblastoma Aaron's concept of "Ms. Frizzles," the teachers and mentors who invest in potential before the outcome is certain What an off-the-shelf cell therapy library could mean for everyday cancer patients Why $250 million dedicated to pediatric brain tumors could accelerate progress by years Connect with Aaron: Website: kiragenbio.com LinkedIn X

MD to CEO: One Doctor's Mission ft. Zaman Shah

What happens when a physician with 15 years of frontline experience stops waiting for healthcare to fix itself, and builds the fix himself? In this episode of the Nurse Rosa's INsights Podcast, host Rosa Hart sits down with Zaman Shah, MD MBA, founder and CEO of Medway, a physician-led AI infrastructure company transforming EHRs into AI-first platforms. Dr. Shah brings a rare combination most health tech founders simply don't have: clinical credibility from 15 years of frontline practice, business training from an MBA at UAB, and specialized Harvard training in healthcare AI. His mission is direct : restore the human connection in healthcare by making every EHR intelligent, interoperable, and effortless through a clinician-designed, compliant AI layer. What Medway actually solves: Small-to-mid-size and specialty EHRs often lack the time, talent, or capital to build AI in-house. Medway provides plug-and-play AI infrastructure — delivered under the EHR vendor's own brand — that brings ambient documentation, smart data access, and validated order entry to market in weeks, not years. In this episode, you'll hear: How 15 years of frontline medicine shaped Dr. Shah's vision for Medway Why small and specialty EHRs are being left behind in the AI race — and how Medway closes that gap The real cost of fragmented data, redundant workflows, and manual administrative work on clinical care Why interoperability is still broken and what universal, standards-based access would actually look like How ambient documentation and conversational retrieval can give clinicians back their time with patients Dr. Shah's billion-dollar vision: a modern operating layer for healthcare that eliminates waste, closes care gaps in real time, and reduces friction for both clinicians and patients Dr. Shah's billion-dollar answer: If given a $1B grant, Dr. Shah would build and scale a modern operating layer for healthcare — starting with universal interoperability so clinicians and patients can access the right information instantly, without faxing or chasing records. He would embed ambient documentation and guided order entry directly into care delivery, invest in real-time quality and care-gap closure during the visit rather than after, and fund patient-facing access tools that reduce administrative burden. Across all of it: trust, transparent governance, measurable outcomes, and adoption incentives built for sustained ROI. 64: Reviving Primary Care with Timothy Boyle

Primary care is quietly collapsing - and most patients don’t even realize it. In this episode, Timothy Boyle pulls back the curtain on the mounting pressure facing small, independent primary care practices across the country. From crushing administrative demands to unsustainable financial models, the very doctors who know their patients best are struggling to survive. But this isn’t just about business. It’s about relationships. Timothy shares why personal connections between providers and patients are the backbone of effective care - and what happens emotionally to clinicians when they’re forced to practice in systems that prevent them from truly helping the people they serve. When small practices disappear, so does continuity, trust, and the human side of medicine. This conversation is a call to reinvest in primary care, not as a line item, but as the foundation of our healthcare system. Because when we support patient-centered practices, we protect both access and humanity in medicine. Ep 63: The Critical Care Revolution with Kali Dayton

The Awake & Walking ICU: Transforming Critical Care with Kali Dayton Sedation is not neutral. Immobility is not harmless. What we do in the ICU follows patients long after discharge. In this powerful episode of Nurse Rosa’s INsights, I sit down with Kali Dayton, DNP, AGACNP, critical care nurse practitioner, consultant, and founder of the Awake and Walking ICU movement. Kali shares how working in a unit that prioritized mobility and minimal sedation completely changed the way she understood critical care and why she now trains ICU teams nationwide to implement the ABCDEF bundle. We explore what truly happens when patients are deeply sedated. We unpack delirium, long-term cognitive harm, and the cultural norms that intensified during COVID when many ICUs shifted further toward sedation and away from mobility. Kali has walked into ICUs across the country and seen dramatic differences in patient care practices. What she found is clear. Outcomes improve when patients are awake, mobile, and engaged even while critically ill. This is a conversation about challenging outdated practices, elevating nursing advocacy, and embracing interdisciplinary collaboration to transform patient outcomes. Ep 61: Recognizing Nursing as STEM with Rebecca Love

Nurses use pharmacology, operate complex medical technology, and apply statistical modeling daily - yet they're locked out of $1.2 billion in federal STEM funding. Rebecca Love is fighting to change that. Ep 52: We Need To Talk About Sex with Jessica Federer

Women are experiencing twice the side effects—and no one ever told them why. In this episode of Nurse Rosa’s INsights, I talk with Jessica Federer, one of the most important leaders in women’s health innovation and digital transformation. Jessica is the Managing Partner of The Women’s Health Fund, an investor, a board member for public and private companies around the world, and a globally recognized expert in health technologies. She previously served as the first woman Chief Digital Officer in global pharma at Bayer A.G., led digital health expansions during the pandemic, advised McKinsey, contributed to Fortune Global 100 strategy, and helped scale disruptive health startups. She has been named a Rock Health “Icon,” a Health Equity Champion, and one of the top 100 Chief Digital Officers. Together, we break down one of medicine’s biggest blind spots: the long-standing belief that treating men and women the same was “equal.” In reality, that approach left women overlooked, misdiagnosed, and disproportionately harmed. From medication side effects to disease presentation to the silent X chromosome that’s almost entirely ignored in medical training. Jessica reveals why sex-based differences are not a niche topic but a foundational requirement for understanding every health condition. This conversation calls for a new paradigm in research, clinical care, and medical education. Women’s health outcomes have been shaped by decades of male-default research. Changing that means embracing accurate, evidence-based, sex-informed medicine and finally giving women the healthcare they deserve. Ep 42: EHRs and Equity with Leigh Burchell

What if the technology behind electronic health records could save lives, reduce health disparities, and reshape the future of caregiving? In this episode of Nurse Rosa’s INsights, host Rosa Hart sits down with Leigh C. Burchell, Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs at Altera Digital Health and Chair of the Electronic Health Records Association. Leigh shares how her upbringing and career shaped her passion for healthcare advocacy and policy. She reflects on the intersection of technology and patient care, describing how data-driven innovations in electronic health records (EHRs) can be life-altering for patients and providers alike: “I know from so many different experiences that the technology we develop directly affects the lives of patients. The availability of data today changes diagnostic and treatment decisions and the patients' ability to actively partner in their own care — it isn’t hyperbolic to say that it’s changing lives.” – Leigh C. Burchell The discussion explores how regulations can both guide and hinder innovation in health tech, why bridging policy and technology is vital, and how health equity must begin with access to basic resources like nutrition. Leigh also opens up about her personal connection to dementia and shares her vision for better infrastructure, research, and caregiver support in the years ahead: “There are a lot of places $1 billion could be effectively spent to improve U.S. healthcare, unfortunately, but I’d probably focus on two areas: food insecurity and dementia research.” – Leigh C. Burchell This thoughtful, forward-looking conversation highlights why what we do in healthcare truly matters and how innovative solutions can transform outcomes for patients and caregivers alike.
