    In Conversation with Amanda Bothma founder of Wela Kapela Productions.Founded in 2018,  this East London-based company has become one of the major cabaret producers in South Africa.Vincent has sold out multiple seasons in all the major centres in South Africa. In 2024, it won three Naledi Theatre Awards – Best Lead Actor, Best Breakthrough Performance, and Best Small-scale Musical Theatre Production. Daniel Anderson was nominated for a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award, while Vincent received a Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival and played to 4- and 5-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe 2023.  In August 2025, Vincent made its West End Debut with a sold-out performance at the Phoenix Arts Club. Mad About The Boys received a BroadwayWorld South Africa Award for Best Solo Performance (2023), further cementing Wela Kapela Productions’ reputation for creating acclaimed and innovative theatre. The company’s latest Afrikaans cabaret, Die Siel van Eugène Marais, has continued this success, earning a Fiesta Award nomination.  Their most recent mainstream cabaret production, The Tramp, received three Naledi Theatre Award nominations and won the award for Best Lead Actor in a Cabaret/Small-scale Musical.

Rising quickly to the top of the national circuit and winning the SABC battle of the bands, they recorded “Work it Out” for Warner Brothers in 1979, which remains an enduring SA classic.Parr then formed Ella Mental with Heather Mac, which was one of the iconic 80’s bands to have a string of radio hits in South Africa, playing many of the country's top festivals.The common thread throughout all these projects has been Tim Parr’s expressive and soulful guitar playing, and unlike many guitarists, his rhythm and textural playing is as distinctive as his unmistakable voice.

    Cape Town-based artist and cultural activist Jill Trappler was  in studio on The Business of Entertainment on Cape Talk  on what is, officially our 200th podcast of On the Couch.With a career spanning more than three decades, Trappler is celebrated not only for her paintings and solo exhibitions but also for her groundbreaking contributions to South Africa’s arts community.As a painter, she explores texture, mark-making, and colour with a sensitivity informed by her background as a weaver and spinner. Her work, shown nationally and internationally, reflects her immersion in both South Africa’s complex social landscape and its natural environments.Trappler has been at the heart of transformative creative initiatives since the 1980s.
