Draft Day: 2026 NBA-Style Microbrand & Independent Watch Draft
In this episode, to commemorate the NBA Playoffs; Praka invites 2 of his fellow Basketball and Watch Enthusiasts from the OverTime Perth Crew to do an NBA styled draft for a microbrand and independent watches! The rules are pretty simple, once a brand has been picked no one else can pick it but other than that most things go! The brands themselves aren’t too tightly controlled so expect some ‘outside’ picks!Wrist Checks:Oliver – Helm Khurubari WhiteSimon – MMI x Awagami Factory – SpringPraka – Halios Seaforth IV BlackThe Draft:1. The Scarcity Trap: Why You Can’t Stop Buying Watch ‘Drops’
In this episode, Praka & James get into some watch psychology! Drop culture (sneakers, watches and other luxury consumer products) are increasingly commonplace. Why does our heart rate spike when a countdown for a new release is nearing zero? We thought this would be a great episode to explore the behavioural economics of limited runs and why the ‘hunt’ is more addictive and satisfying than the actual product itself. Wristchecks: James: Hamilton Jazzmaster Traveler GMT 2 / Erebus Ascent Black HelixPraka: Farasute Mechanical Dress WatchPoints Discussed:We break down the Amygdala Hijack to explain why countdown timers shut down your logic and trigger a primal "survival mode" response. You’ll learn how Loss Aversion makes the sting of a "Sold Out" screen hurt far more than the joy of an "Order Confirmed" email, and we compare the high-speed adrenaline of Microbrand Drops to the slow-burn psychological warfare of the Rolex Waitlist. Finally, we debate the "Scarcity Duel"—is it more effective to limit the total number of watches or the window of time we have to buy them? Some Recent Examples:Kurono Tokyo: The DiversStudio Underd0g: Guava (British Watchmakers Day)Something InterestingJames chats his new purchase a bag to store all his camera and recording gear for his upcoming trip to Melbourne! How to Design, Build, Produce & Launch a Watch Brand — Step by Step with WatchingJames & Ikara Watches
In this episode we break down what it really takes to design, build, produce and launch a watch brand, step by step. Joining Praka for this conversation is reoccurring guest James from the WatchingJames YouTube Channel and Tony from Ikara Watches, as we pull back the curtain on the realities of starting a watch company in today’s market. This episode was released both on OverTime: The Podcast and on WatchingJames’ YouTube channel, which you can watch here: WatchingJames – Full Episode.WristchecksJames is double wristing with the new Direnzo Mondial DRZ04R and the HZ.03 from HZ Watches. Tony shares real-world insight from building Ikara Watches from the ground up.We discuss the importance of defining a clear design language early, choosing the right suppliers, understanding production constraints, and making smart compromises without losing your original vision. The conversation also gets into pricing realities, timelines, and why patience is critical when trying to do things properly. We also touch on the often-overlooked business side of watchmaking, including intellectual property laws, trademarking, and brand protection, and why getting these foundations right early can save a lot of pain down the track. Favre-Bulle: Inside the new Swiss Microbrand with Alexandre!
In this episode we sit down with Alexandre, watchmaker and founder of Favre-Bulle, an independent microbrand based in Geneva, Switzerland.WristchecksAlexandre is wearing the Favre-Bulle Three Peaks in White, while Praka has on his Nomos Club 703.1.Recap:Alexandre first studied law and economics before becoming fascinated by mechanical watches. That interest led him to pursue an internship and ultimately enrol in watchmaking school in Geneva, where he completed a diploma. He went on to work in CAD modelling, designing movement modules, and later spent three years at Rolex working on indices and the ceramic line. A move to Lausanne provided the spark that pushed him to start his own brand. We discuss what motivated him to leave Rolex and build Favre-Bulle, before shifting to his debut model, the Three Peaks. Inspired by Swiss nature, the watch reflects essential life moments—slowing down, appreciating quality over quantity, and reconnecting with one’s roots. The design follows these values, with a grained dial evoking natural textures, and flat, angled subdials with brushed detailing.Alexandre shares his experience running a successful Kickstarter campaign and explains how he approached improving the production model, including a reduced thickness for the automatic chronograph—no easy feat. We explore his decision to launch the brand with a chronograph and what future complications may look like. His first assembled movement was the ETA 7750, so reimagining a chronograph in his own vision felt natural. The second model will introduce another complication aligned with Favre-Bulle’s philosophy, a jumping hour that offers a new perspective on time.We talk about the Favre-Bulle name and its family origins, and whether there’s watchmaking history within his lineage. Alexandre also shares plans to attend global watch fairs, including MicroPraha in Prague at the end of November, with hopes of showcasing prototypes and new dial variations. We close out the main conversation by discussing his vision for the brand’s future. Alexandre aims to build a strong design DNA that is recognisable but subtle—not loud, but distinct. He hopes to develop different collections in the future—casual, relaxed or more complex models—all while staying rooted in Favre-Bulle’s core identity.Something Interesting:Alexandre discusses current issues around tariffs in Switzerland and the broader uncertainty affecting the industry and people within it. We also chat about pieces from his own collection, including a Rolex GMT-Master II Rootbeer, a Tudor chronograph he purchased for 100 CHF, and the Yema Microrotor. Praka shares an update on his own collection to wrap things up.Contact Us:You can find more about the brand at the Favre-Bulle website, or reach Alexandre directly at [email protected] for tuning in! You Know What Really Grinds My Gears? Part 2
In this episode of OverTime the Podcast, Praka is joined by Paul for part 2 of "You Know What Really Grinds My Gears!" We talk honestly about the things within watch culture that drain excitement rather than fuel it — from hype cycles to QC dismissals, influencer exhaustion, and the way some brands handle criticism. A bit of therapy, a bit of comedy, and hopefully a bit of perspective.Wristchecks:Praka – Seiko Lord Marvel (Gold)Paul – Lorier Olympia Chronograph NE88 (Series 1)Recap:We kick things off with the Zelos cycle and the constant “sold out!” or “why didn’t it sell out?” chatter — it’s never-ending: https://zeloswatches.com/collections/allThen we get into a recent run-in with a brand, where feedback turned into deleted comments, burner accounts and pressure for glowing coverage. It sparked a bigger conversation about how community, brand transparency and fair critique should work. From there, we dig into forum and hobby culture — yes, every brand has QC issues, but brushing off legitimate concerns because a watch isn’t $10k is wild. If it’s sold for money, QC matters. We also talk about influencer fatigue — that wave of “everything is perfect” content. It’s okay to say something isn’t great. Not everything has to be a masterpiece. We revisit the infamous pumpkin/patina watch listing: cracked bezel, grime literally packed between the case and bezel… for $16K. Clean your watches, folks.Ginault comes up, along with mod culture and the double standard between what’s considered “customisation” and what’s considered “ruining a watch”:https://www.artisansdegeneve.com/fr/challenges/absolute-ruby/And of course — watches listed as “only one under $X!” priced $1 under… crowns at 10 o’clock (especially on these): https://wolbrook.com/collections/skindiver-ii-professional-diving-watchesThe Albishorn Type 10 where you basically need to take the watch off to use the buttons.Plus the Kaventsmann Hadal II — a ~$5K watch with a genuinely cool Instagram presence: https://www.instagram.com/kaventsmann_watches/?hl=enWe talk about respect in forums — most of us aren’t here to make money, but no one needs to take advantage either. If you’re selling or buying, be a decent human.Something Interesting:Paul brings things full circle with a nod to the Ginault, Lorier and AAWF story — shoutout to Tom for being part of that chapter.Praka shares his experience at the recent RedbarWA meetup at Fire & Time — watches intersecting with cars, art, sculpture and design. Minim Watches – Bridging East and West with the MN01
In this episode, Praka sits down with Chloe, founder of Minim Watches, to discuss her remarkable journey from passionate collector to watch designer. From her first ICE Watch Netherlands World Cup Edition at just nine years old, to falling in love with horology through brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Chloe’s story is one of curiosity, creativity, and connection. Her collecting journey deepened after moving to the UK — attending RedBar meetups, appearing on Scottish Watches, and experimenting with watch photography and reviews. What began as a hobby soon became a community. With encouragement from peers like Kevin from Pedral Watches, she took the leap to design her own watch — and thus, Minim was born. The Minim MN01 marks Chloe’s debut creation — a timepiece that bridges the traditions of watchmaking with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Conceived between East and West, it reflects her personal journey: from Hong Kong roots to a new chapter in Great Britain.Described by Chloe as “a meridian that connects cultures,” the MN01 celebrates balance — between heritage and innovation, artistry and precision. Every element, from the dial patterns to the assembly location, tells a story of thoughtful craftsmanship.Drawing inspiration from Chronoswiss, Breguet, A. Lange & Söhne, and Glashütte Original, Chloe has created a neo-vintage-inspired watch with contemporary clarity. The MN01 features a 36.5mm stainless steel case, onion crown, and elegantly curved lugs — a nod to classic proportions that wear beautifully on the wrist.Pre-orders open: 25th October – 9th November 2025Pre-order pricing:UK: £999 (incl. OverTime x Monbrey Watches!
If you would like to support us head to this link to buy us a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/overtimethepodcast In this episode of OverTime: The Podcast, Praka had the pleasure of hosting Austin and Henry from Monbrey Watches! Wrist Checks: • Austin kicks us off with the Monbrey MB2 – Pink MOP CNC Dial on a beautiful Japanese Leather from Accurate Form called the Himeji Kurozan. • Henry with the Tudor Black Bay 58, a modern classic. • Praka rounds off the wrist check with the Monbrey MB2 Black Dial (Tamahagane) kindly on loan from Monbrey Watches, paired with a Delugs Alcantara Leather Strap. We first kicked off with Austin and Henry’s background as industrial designers who have been around watches for almost 20 years now, and how they got to where they are now, starting their own brand. The boys discuss the origin of their brand, the distinctive inspiration behind their brand – from two guys growing up in Hong Kong in the 80s (the heyday of Japanese pop culture and influence in Hong Kong) and how that shaped their design philosophy. Praka discussed how he thought the MB1’s inspiration was very King Seiko however the design is more from the 70’s Wedge Car Designs (Lotus etc – check this link) which sports the angular styling which is evident in their watches! Of course, Praka had to ask, why the brand name? The answer is very interesting! We also had a special question from a fellow content creator CJ who asked – “With most Microbrands always being compared to mainstream brands like Seiko, Citizen, Rolex etc…for the listener's who have not seen your watches yet, what brand/brands would you say shares similar design ethos or aesthetics with Monbrey?” The guys would align their design ethos/aesthetics with a Grand Seiko due to the following – elegance, sharpness and the facets which allow for greater reflections (very Seiko Grammar of Design!). Of course, the case and dial are their focus, with a mix of matte and shiny finish. What do you listeners think? We wrap up the questions with asking their future plans, and they had some exciting exclusives! (only on OverTime!) More new dials (materials) for the MB2, and a complication to be introduced for the MB3! Henry is also working on something else super exciting, a subsidiary brand with more fun spin to Monbrey. The guys also dropped another exclusive – an exciting collaboration with a YouTuber is incoming!! Something Interesting: Both Henry and Austin kicked off the Something Interesting section with two distinct Casio watches, the first being the Casio CPP 002 Sauna Watch, a watch (like its namesake) made for the sauna! Secondly the Casio CRW-001-1, a fully working ring watch in the silhouette of the square G-Shock. Praka gave a show recommendation that he has been watching lately, Interior Chinatown, a police drama series with a twist based on a book with the same name by Charles Yu. Check it out here. On the back of Praka’s recommendation, Austin added some other show recommendations, an Anime called Dandadan (Netflix link) and the Hong Kong Cult Classic, the crime saga, Infernal Affairs. So much so it was remade into the Hollywood movie, The Departed (Netflix link) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon etc!
