Barley Harvest Complete, the Range Rover Winner Revealed and a Field Fire Averted
The barley harvest is in the shed, and the big question of the year is finally answered. In this episode we reveal the results of our hybrid against conventional trial, and after nine weeks of drought the yields are better than we dared hope. With the combines blown down, attention turns to the cultivations and the careful job of putting right the damage left behind by the infrastructure projects crossing the farm. There is plenty happening away from the fields too. We take a close look at a tractor track conversion system and the numbers behind it, get into a frustrating tyre failure and warranty battle, and meet more of the harvest team and hear their stories. We also draw the Range Rover raffle at last and find out who has won the keys, with a good sum raised for charity in the process. And then there is the moment that could have been a disaster, when a spark in a dry field started a fire with the wind blowing towards standing wheat, and some quick thinking saved the day. From the first yields to a lucky escape, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro0:26 Barley finished: the hybrid vs conventional result1:37 Moving on to the cultivations2:18 Tractor tracks with Outland9:09 Day three: combining the big field10:15 Sectional control and cutting waste11:09 The SFI cap and losing environmental land13:34 A Bridgestone tyre failure and warranty battle16:09 Watching all four combines at work18:45 Meet the team from Ireland21:36 Paul and the harvest logistics24:48 Paul's story and moving house26:22 A work experience lesson for Rowan29:33 The damage from the infrastructure projects33:16 A worry about the beans34:18 Fly tipping and severed land drains39:02 The real cost of field obstacles41:28 Baling and a clever bale chaser45:36 The pool nears completion48:41 The Range Rover raffle draw49:48 We nearly had a field fire51:56 A lucky escape, and what's nextP.X. Harvest 2026 Is Underway, the First Barley Yields Are In
Get Your Tickets - https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/products/range-rover-raffle-ticketHarvest 2026 is properly underway, and the first barley is coming into the store. In this episode we get the full field by field picture of how the crop is yielding after nine weeks of drought, and the early results are more encouraging than we feared. We also explain a costly quirk of this year, with the grain coming in so dry that we are losing weight and value, and the clever solution we have found to win some of that back over the winter.Out in the field the whole operation is in full flow, with four combines, the chaser bins and the lorries all working together, and a brilliant team settling into the rhythm. We get into the detail that makes the difference, from a new tyre trial and our move to 48 metre tram lines, to the big test of the year, hybrid barley against conventional, and what it could mean going forward. There is also time to enjoy the best bit of the whole year, watching the store fill up, an honest word on the accounts and grain prices, and a final reminder about the Range Rover raffle for charity before Friday's draw. From the first yields to the team bringing it in, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro0:17 The first yields, field by field2:13 A costly moisture problem2:39 The team and the plan3:45 The wheat turning early4:12 Day one teething and a big blow down5:56 A new tyre trial with ADR11:29 Moving to 48 metre tram lines13:12 Watching the combines at work15:17 The view from Crafts Hill18:04 An honest word on the accounts18:33 The best bit: filling the store19:27 Back in the cab with the team21:56 What the yield maps are telling us23:14 Moving into the hybrid tonight25:27 The Range Rover raffle26:12 Hot off the press: the latest results27:34 A great start, and what's nextP.X. A Conversation With Two Australian Farmers, the Fertiliser Shock and the Future of the Family Farm
Fresh from the fiftieth birthday party and Cereals, we sit down with two farmers who have come a very long way to be here, brothers David and Ed Cox from Western Australia. With one of them due to fly home within the hour, we take the chance to talk honestly about what farming looks like on the other side of the world, and how many of the same pressures are being felt everywhere. We get into the global fertiliser and fuel shock and how war and wider disruption have hit supply and pricing, the extraordinary story of clearing five thousand acres of failed carbon scheme woodland to build a farm at Esperance, and the big question hanging over agriculture in both countries, whether the family farm can survive rising land values, capital gains tax and succession, or whether the future is corporate. We also talk through a major shift in their business, cutting back on wheat and pushing livestock towards half of the operation, and share some honest and at times provocative views on commodity prices, whether the world really needs to grow more food, and where farming goes from here. From global markets to the future of the family farm, this is an honest conversation behind the scenes of modern farming, on both sides of the world.0:00 Intro0:49 What's happening in Australia1:13 The fertiliser and nitrogen shock2:31 How Australian fertiliser supply works6:22 Clearing the trees to build a farm10:13 Splitting the family business15:42 Two brothers, two businesses17:00 Land values, capital gains tax and succession19:18 Is this the end of the family farm?21:32 Plateaued yields and a fertiliser tax24:39 Are we really growing too much food?26:33 The Monday fertiliser scramble27:46 The fuel supply worry31:12 Cutting wheat, doubling livestock35:18 The protein debate36:43 Excited by the challenge, or adjusting?43:04 Good rains and the season aheadContact:Email: [email protected]#Farming #Agriculture #FarmingUK #AustralianFarming #AusFarming #FamilyFarm #Fertiliser #Livestock #Dairy #FarmingPodcast #GlobalFarming #ArableFarming #FarmLife #Harvest2026 #PXFarmsThank you for watching and supporting our farming journey! The Final Days Before Harvest, Walking the Crops and the Damage Being Done to Our Land
Harvest is now just days away, and everything is coming together. In this episode we walk the crops one last time before the combines roll, checking over the wheat, the oats and the barley, weighing up the yield potential after a difficult dry spell, and allowing ourselves a little cautious optimism that it could be better than we feared.Behind the scenes the harvest team complete their health and safety and first aid training, the chaser bins and firefighting kit get their final checks, and the new fertiliser store edges closer to taking its first tanks. We also explain a big rotation decision for the year ahead, with oilseed rape coming back in, and what that could mean for the bottom line.It is not all plain sailing. We deal with yet more fly tipping and a frustrating exchange with the council, and take an honest look at the damage being done to our land by the major infrastructure projects crossing the farm. With the team buzzing and the bets on for the first day of cutting, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro0:30 Harvest team safety training1:38 The fertiliser bund takes shape3:38 A frustrating fly tipping saga6:14 The trailer parked up and selling the Range Rover8:41 Final checks on the kit9:51 Firefighting kit on the bowsers10:50 Walking the wheat11:38 What is the yield looking like?12:08 Really pleased with the oats13:05 Concerns over land drainage14:04 Why oilseed rape is back in the rotation14:53 The damage from infrastructure projects16:40 Ready for the offP.X. The Final Countdown to Harvest 2026, and the Fertiliser Squeeze on the Horizon
It is the final week before harvest, and there is a huge amount to get done. In this episode we get the combines and chaser bins fired up and ready, fill the tanks with fuel, welcome the harvest team back for the season, and work through the long list of jobs that has to be ticked off before the first field is cut.We also sit down for two proper deep dives. First we talk grain store hygiene with Tony, the self styled guardian of the grain, covering how to keep stored grain in top condition, the truth about smoke bombs, and the new rules on rodent control. Then John Fuller joins us to inspect the new fertiliser store and bund, and to give an honest and slightly worrying look at where the fertiliser market is heading, from the global nitrogen squeeze to the case for buying early.Elsewhere on the farm there is concrete going down, a clever trailer conversion taking shape, the pool nearing completion for a pre harvest splash, and the barley getting closer to ripe with a big heatwave on the way. From honest expert conversations to the last jobs before the combines roll, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro2:50 Getting the chaser bins ready3:35 The big week before harvest6:00 Loading out the grain store8:09 Combining the protein spray and T39:57 The fertiliser bund takes shape11:11 Is the barley ready?12:24 The first combine fired up14:02 A new accommodation trailer build17:09 Reflecting on the party18:06 Liquid fertiliser in the field20:36 The pool and a pre harvest splash21:39 Grain store hygiene with Tony29:32 New rules on rodent control36:26 John Fuller inspects the bund39:43 Where the fertiliser market is heading46:11 Getting the containment right53:51 The case for buying early56:54 Countdown to harvestP.X. Celebrating James' 50th Birthday, the Party of the Year and the Countdown to Harvest
This week we celebrate a big one, James' 50th birthday, with a party that will take some beating. We open the doors on the shed for the first time to see it transformed, with the combines lined up as the centre piece, a disco ball overhead and 450 friends ready to dance. There is food cooked over the fire pits, two bands, and the now famous tale of just how many bags of oak it really takes to cook for a crowd that size. Once the celebrations are behind us, it is back to business. We see the Trailer of Dreams in one piece after a muddy but brilliant Cereals, show you the new offices to let at the Irwin Centre, and float an idea we would love your thoughts on, ticketed harvest experiences out in the field. With the party cleared away, attention turns firmly to harvest. We get the combines fuelled and ready, welcome the harvest team back for the season, talk protein results and T3 spraying, and ask the big question, just how soon will we be cutting? From a once in a decade celebration to the first real signs of harvest, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Cereals 2026 at Clarksons Farm, Meeting the President of the NFU and a look at the Future of Farming
We are at Cereals 2026, and what a show it was. In this episode we take you behind the scenes of our first time exhibiting, from setting up the Trailer of Dreams late into the night to two busy days on the RAGT stand with the beer flowing and the merchandise selling fast.It was wonderful to meet so many familiar faces, and we were honoured to sit down with the President of the NFU for an honest conversation about the issues facing the industry, from long term tenancies and stamp duty to investment allowances and the future of farm support. We also got on stage to talk grain marketing, the pitfalls and the successes, and caught up with friends, sponsors and customers from right across farming.Away from the stand we got hands on with some of the most exciting innovation at the show, including the launch of a new hybrid wheat with remarkable rooting, the robotic crop scouting "robo dogs," and the data platforms that could change how we farm. All of this as the rain finally arrives after a long dry spell, with real optimism building around the crops and the harvest to come.A huge thank you to RAGT for having us, and to everyone who came to say hello. The Final Push for Cereals 2026, and Rain at Last After Nine Weeks Dry
With Cereals 2026 just days away, it is all hands on deck to get the Trailer of Dreams onto site and show ready. In this episode we lay a woodchip path to keep the mud at bay, load up the merchandise, and get the beer, the gin and the branded barrels ready for the stand. After nine weeks of dry weather we also finally get the rain we have been praying for, and we look at what almost 100mm could mean for the crops and for harvest, with the barley already changing colour.Back at base, work continues on the new fertiliser store, where we walk through the bund and containment system built to catch any spill, and tell the cautionary tale of a leak that took years to put right. We also host a group of Nuffield Global Focus scholars from around the world, hear the topics they are researching, and welcome a busy day of international visitors before everyone heads to the show. Elsewhere there is more concrete around the yard, a strong run of output from the sprayers, seed planning for next season, and a few birthday surprises along the way. From show preparation to honest talk about weather, harvest and the realities of running a modern farm, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro0:27 Rain at last after nine weeks dry1:33 A woodchip path for the Trailer of Dreams2:48 Peckys Gin, Aussie visitors and hair gummies4:33 Yard concrete and the cost revealed6:07 Barrels, lids and beer for the stand8:49 Farm walk: hedges, pigeons and mustard10:25 The "half a job" Arthur joke12:01 Building the new fertiliser store13:47 A cautionary fertiliser spill story15:00 The spill containment system explained21:12 A strong run of sprayer output23:29 Seed planning and the Grain Hospital25:33 Birthday gifts and turning 5027:48 Meet the Nuffield Global Focus scholars31:17 A busy day, then off to CerealsP.X. When you are putting big horsepower to the ground, the tyres matter more than most people realise. In this episode we sit down with Scott Sloan, who has flown in from the USA, to take a proper look at the 1100 super singles on our Fendt and why we moved away from duals. We cover compaction, flotation, VF technology and the real cost of getting your tyre pressures wrong, with some yield numbers that genuinely surprised us.Scott also walks us through how to read the stampings on a tyre, the story behind Goodyear and Titan, and a real-world case study from a grower in Illinois who paid for a full set of tyres in a single season just by switching off his row crop duals.Elsewhere on the farm, the Trailer of Dreams is being wrapped and finished ahead of Cereals 2026, and we get our first look at the P.X Lager, brewed from our own barley and ready to pour on the stand. With the weather finally turning and the crops ear filling, we also take a moment to look at how the season is shaping up before harvest. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/Chapters:0:00 Intro3:19 Weathers Effect On Grass4:12 Meet Scott Sloan from Titan and Goodyear6:42 How the super single tire was born14:22 VF technology and tyre pressures18:50 Pressure and weight demo21:57 Tyre size comparison and reading the stampings25:38 The Goodyear and Titan story31:03 Tyre handling and storage on the farm33:38 Reading tyre faults and warranty38:19 Inside the factory: Scott's story45:37 The Illinois yield case study49:32 Supply chains, tariffs and Iran52:25 Outro and what's nextP.X. Inside Australian Farming With David Cox, Massive Stores, Quadtracs & CBH Logistics
James continues his visit to Australia, joining large-scale grower David Cox to explore how grain farming operates at true continental scale, from paddock to port.We look at how Australian farms market grain using CGX, run their own lorries to CBH receival sites, and manage huge volumes through open bulk storage systems capable of holding 33,000 tonnes per store. From grain pits and conveyors to extended weighbridges designed for Australian road trains, this is grain logistics on a completely different level.Out in the field, we see cultivation with a Quadtrac, lime spreading operations, and the machinery choices suited to vast acreages and dryland systems. We also touch on wool production, farm accommodation for seasonal labour, and the infrastructure required to support farming across Western Australia. This is a rare behind-the-scenes look at Australian grain farming — and how it compares with UK arable systems. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/P.X. Inside a 1,100-Cow Australian Dairy Farm, How Aussie Farming Really Works
James heads to Australia to visit a truly impressive dairy operation, where over 1,100 cows are milked every day. Hosted by Ed Cox at Waterhatch Dairy, this episode explores how large-scale Australian dairy farming works — from logistics and machinery to feed systems and long-term farm strategy. We look at how the farm manages its own haulage fleet, produces maize silage and hay at scale, and balances dairy and beef enterprises. There’s also discussion around growth hormones, genetics and productivity, alongside a rare look at calves being born and the realities of running a multi-generation dairy business.Beyond livestock, we explore the broader farming system — including direct drilling with Great Plains kit, Claas tractors, wind turbines and solar installations helping power the operation. We even catch up with a former P.X. harvest student now back farming his own farm in Australia. This is a fascinating comparison between UK and Australian agriculture, showing the scale, efficiency and challenges of dairy farming on the other side of the world. If you farm dairy — UK or overseas — we’d love to know: what surprised you most about Australian systems? For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/P.X. Why Land Drainage Still Matters, Gearbox Swaps & The Bio Oil Heater Comes To Life
It’s another full-on week behind the scenes at P.X. Farms as we juggle essential maintenance, upgrades and long-term planning across the business. We start by looking at why land drainage is still one of the most important investments on a modern farm, especially with increasingly unpredictable weather. Back in the yard, progress continues inside the boardroom as the new flooring goes down, while better systems are put in place for parts ordering to keep the workshop running efficiently. Our new bio oil boiler is now providing heat across the site, the slug pellet machine continues to test our patience, and the Hilux gets some long-overdue interior repairs. There’s also a big mechanical moment as a new gearbox arrives for the Fendt 942, the plough gets a fresh coat of paint, and preparations begin for fertiliser season with tankers heading out on hire.We also retrofit air brakes to the Fendt 1167, tackle a few workshop mysteries, and keep things honest with some classic farm humour along the way.As always, this is a real look at the decisions, repairs and upgrades that keep a large arable farm moving forward. How New Wheat Varieties Are Created, Inside RAGT’s Plant Breeding Programme
In this video, we go behind the scenes at RAGT to explore how brand-new wheat varieties are developed, from the very first cross in the glasshouse to plots destined for UK and international fields. We start inside RAGT’s state-of-the-art glasshouses, where plant breeders begin the long process of creating new varieties. From crossing parent lines and managing high failure rates, to artificially generating multiple seasons in a single year, this is modern plant breeding at scale. As the journey continues, we look at how varieties are selected for different markets, how rust resistance is bred in, and how data, GPS systems, plot drills and fertiliser spreaders all play a role in narrowing thousands of plants down to just a handful of potential commercial winners. This is a rare look at the science, time, and risk involved in breeding the crops that underpin global food production, and why it can take many years before a new variety ever reaches a farmer’s field.Whether you’re a farmer, agronomist, or simply interested in how food is produced, this video shows the unseen work behind every bag of seed. For those interested in our new merchandise: https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/P.X.
