Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Life On Board: Article 2 I A Day in My Life Before Returning to a Cruise Ship as a Professional Pair Skater

As introduced in my previous Wanderlust Ice & Ink articles, I work as a professional pair figure skater and aerialist on ice, currently performing aboard cruise ships sailing throughout the Caribbean from the United States. While life at sea often takes center stage, the period before returning to a contract remains largely unseen. What many perceive as a holiday or a simple break between assignments is, in reality, a carefully structured phase of preparation. Returning to the ice after several weeks away requires far more than packing a suitcase and boarding a ship. Training sessions, physical conditioning, choreography reviews, pair skating practice, administrative preparations, and creative projects all become part of a daily routine designed to ensure a smooth transition back into professional performance. Behind every show performed on board lies a profession built on discipline, consistency, and constant refinement. Whether working on pair elements, rebuilding stamina, maintaining technical precision, or preparing future artistic projects, this period between contracts offers a revealing glimpse into what life as a professional skater truly involves beyond the spotlight. This article follows a typical day during that preparation phase, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the routines, responsibilities, and realities that shape the profession before stepping back onto the ice at sea.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink – Life On Board as a Pair Figure Skater And Lifestyle Journalist on a Cruise Ship: Article 1 | Introduction to the Series

A new editorial series by @sarahaerial.ice. From skating shows around the world to life on board a cruise ship as a professional pair figure skater, seen through the lens of a lifestyle journalist. My behind-the-scenes journey is now live on the Podcast Journal & YouTube. I’ve spent the past decade skating across the world, from arena shows to international tours, and writing between airports, rehearsals, and curtain calls. But performing on a cruise ship introduced an entirely new rhythm: a floating stage, a life in motion, and an adventure I’ve come to absolutely love. That’s why I created a new series within my Wanderlust Ice & Ink: Life On Board as a Pair Figure Skater at Sea, an editorial and video project dedicated to what it truly means to live, train, and perform as a professional skater on a cruise ship.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink – Travel: Milan, Five Facts About Italian Fashion

Milan is recognized as one of the world’s leading fashion capitals, shaping global style through its designers, craftsmanship, and industry influence. Yet beyond the runways, the city’s approach to fashion is deeply connected to a broader cultural language, one that has been shaped as much by performance as by design. At the heart of this influence stands Teatro alla Scala. For centuries, the opera house has defined a visual and expressive code built on posture, discipline, costume, and dramatic presence. On stage, every movement is intentional, every silhouette structured, every detail designed to convey meaning. This theatrical language has extended far beyond the opera. It has influenced the way elegance is perceived in Milan, precise, controlled, and expressive without excess. From the refined geometry of the Quadrilatero della Moda to the understated power of Italian tailoring, Milanese fashion reflects this heritage of performance. During my time in the city, it became clear that fashion in Milan is not only designed, it is performed. Here are five facts that help understand how Italian fashion and La Scala define a unique cultural code. Milan is one of the world’s leading fashion capitals, alongside Paris, New York, and London. Its reputation is built on strong designers, craftsmanship, and an industry that has shaped global style for decades.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Travel: Milan, Five Historical Facts Behind Italy’s Fashion Capital

Before becoming one of the world’s fashion capitals, Milan was already a city shaped by empires, artists, and powerful dynasties. From the Roman city of Mediolanum to the Renaissance courts of the Sforza, its streets reveal layers of history that still influence its architecture today. While attending the Milan–Cortina Olympic Games and watching the figure skating events in the arena, I also had the chance to explore the city beyond the competition. Walking through Milan means moving between centuries, where Gothic cathedrals, neoclassical monuments, and modern design coexist. Here are five historical facts that help understand how Milan became the city we see today.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Travel: Milano Olympic Games, Five Facts from the Figure Skating Women’s Free Skate and Alysa Liu’s Alysa Liu’s Golden Joy

Stepping into the Milano Ice Skating Arena for the women’s free skate felt like arriving at the final chapter of a story that had been quietly building all week. The short program had drawn the first hierarchy, with Japan’s Ami Nakai leading and Kaori Sakamoto close behind, while Alysa Liu sat in third place within striking distance. But the final night promised something larger. In Olympic figure skating, the free skate is where the competition expands, more time, more elements, more room for ambition, but also more space for pressure to surface. Yet when the decisive moment arrived, the story of the night moved in another direction.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Travel: Milano Olympic Games, Five Facts from the Figure Skating Women’s Short Program

Stepping into the arena for the women’s short program felt different from the men’s night. It was the final discipline of the Olympic figure skating schedule, and the audience was still carrying the plot twists and emotional aftershocks of the previous day. After dramatic shifts in the men’s event, debate in ice dance, and a comeback victory in pairs, Milano Cortina 2026 had already proven that nothing on Olympic ice was predictable. The women’s short program opened under that uncertainty. Now the spotlight turned to a tightly packed field led by Japan’s 17 year old Ami Nakai, followed closely by Kaori Sakamoto and Alysa Liu of the United States. With Japan placing three skaters inside the top four and Adeliia Petrosian looming as an unpredictable contender competing as a neutral athlete, the margins heading into the free skate were really tight. Here are five facts from the women’s short program in Milan, the segment that set the tone for the individual event and revealed the first fractures in the Olympic narrative.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Travel: Milano Olympic Games, Five Facts from the Figure Skating Men’s Free Program And The Coronation of Mikhail Shaidorov

Stepping into the arena for the men’s free skate felt like crossing a threshold into the decisive heartbeat of the Olympic Games and into the moment where Olympic figure skating defines its legacy. With the final flight bringing together Ilia Malinin, Yuma Kagiyama, Adam Siao Him Fa, Daniel Grassl, Mikhail Shaidorov, and Junhwan Cha, the six leaders after the short program, the competition revealed not only its intensity but its capacity for upheaval. At its center stood Mikhail Shaidorov, whose performance became one of the most exceptional and historically significant victories of the modern Olympic era, rising from fifth after the short program to deliver a free skate defined by composure, technical authority, and competitive resilience, securing Kazakhstan’s place at the summit of men’s figure skating and extending the legacy forged by Denis Ten. What began as a contest expected to confirm hierarchy transformed into a night of reversals, pressure, and historic consequence, where the outcome remained uncertain until the final blade mark. Here, in this article, I share five facts about the men’s free program, the segment that concluded the Olympic event, determined its final result, and delivered one of the most dramatic plot twists in the evolving identity of modern men’s figure skating.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink — Travel: Italy, On Site at the Olympic Games, Milan–Cortina 2026

Between the industrial heritage of Turin, twenty years after the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, and the architectural elegance of Milan, Italy is now living to the rhythm of the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. In the piazzas, avenues, and arenas, sport intertwines with culture, design, and the spectacle of the city itself. More than a sporting event, these Games feel like a collective experience in which figure skating converses with history, art, and Italian identity. It is within this vibrant landscape that my Olympic immersion begins.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink – Édito: Life as a Professional Aerialist on Ice and Pair Figure Skater

I am a professional pair figure skater and an aerialist on ice. These two disciplines shape not only my work, but the rhythm of my daily life, whether I am performing or between contracts. It means sustaining a constant relationship with training, preparation, and physical awareness. When the lights go out, the work does not disappear, it simply shifts form. Ice and air meet in my practice through pair skating, aerial disciplines, and the continuous care required to keep the body strong, precise, and safe. What the audience sees on stage is only a fragment of a much larger profession, one that extends far beyond shows, tours, and scheduled appearances. In this article, I define what my professional life truly includes today, what counts as work, and how this continuity structures everything that follows. On stage and beyond it, this is the framework within which my career exists.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink – Édito: Becoming an Aerialist On Ice, Bridging Pair Skating and Circus Arts

I am a professional pair figure skater and an aerialist on ice, performing in international ice shows around the world. My career has been shaped by two disciplines that now coexist at the core of my artistic identity, pair skating, rooted in the ice I grew up on, and aerial work, developed through years of training in circus arts and refined on ice. This édito explores how these two paths gradually came together, not as a planned strategy, but through experience, necessity, and creative choice. It is a reflection on movement as a language, on how a performer adapts when circumstances shift, and on how identity can evolve without abandoning its foundations. Beyond technique, this article looks at the process of building a hybrid artistic practice, where skating and aerial work inform one another, and where performance becomes both a profession and a way of living. I share this story to offer context to a discipline that remains largely unknown, aerial work on ice, and to shed light on the realities behind professional performance, the training, the uncertainty, and the long-term commitment it requires. This edito opens the door to the path that shaped me as an artist, between ice and air.

Wanderlust Ice & Ink - Edito: Balancing Two Careers as a Professional Pair Skater and Lifestyle Journalist

What are the chances that a French girl from a humble background, growing up in a small industrial port town, who began skating to heal a breathing condition, would one day become a lifestyle journalist, a professional pair skater, and an aerialist performing across nearly thirty countries and on cruise ships she once watched being built in her hometown? My life often fits into three essentials: a pair of ice skates, a notepad, and a passport. The skates carry me into the spotlight, performing shows on ice around the world; the notepad captures the stories I write as a lifestyle journalist; and the passport connects them both, opening doors to new places, people, and perspectives. Today, careers are no longer defined by a single path. They’re built at the crossroads of passions where creativity meets discipline, and curiosity meets purpose. History reminds us that innovation often happens in these intersections: where art meets science, where travel meets self-discovery, where gastronomy meets technology. My own journey follows the same pattern. Encouraged by those who pushed me to reach further, I’ve built a career that bridges professional pair skating on cruise ships, creating aerial acts on ice, and storytelling through journalism. I write articles, produce documentaries, and conduct interviews for the International Podcast Journal, two worlds that constantly feed one another. Each discipline strengthens the other, teaching time management, resilience, and vision. I’ve learned that pursuing more than one passion doesn’t divide your energy, it expands it. When different worlds collide, they reveal new possibilities and refine who you are. For me, blending skating with journalism has opened doors I never imagined, and continues to shape both my career and my life. In this article, I’ll revisit how a childhood dream can become a profession, how embracing multiple callings unlocked unexpected opportunities, and how travel and encounters along the way continue to inspire everything I create.
