Fresh off a gold medal performance at WFTDA Regional Playoffs in Ontario, the Calgary Roller Derby All Stars join the podcast this week to bask in the excitement of facing international competition, and how they're preparing for the biggest tournament in team history with community fundraising efforts—including stunts, a donut 5K, tattoo milestones, personalized thank-you videos, and more.I sat down with Ferris Bruiser, Smackie Kennedy, Projectile, and RollerSquare "R2" to discuss the journey from finishing lower than they wanted at playoffs in 2024 to building a semi-satellite team across Alberta and British Columbia and breaking all the brackets in 2026. Six years after his last appearance on the podcast, Optimus Grime returns to discuss the state of jammer development in modern roller derby. Drawing on 12 years of international derby experience, Grime shares his 8-skill framework for jammer growth, breaks down the most common habits holding jammers back, and explains the coaching gaps that have emerged across the sport. The conversation explores individualized jammer coaching, remote video analysis, mental performance, emotion management, and the pursuit of mastery over winning. 205 - Finding Your Ideal Level of Intensity for Performance
How fired up should you be during a roller derby game? As athletes, it's easy to believe that more intensity will equal better performance...but only to a point. In this episode, we're talking about emotional regulation and finding your ideal place on the "hype meter." Too low, and you may struggle with energy, engagement, and hustle. Too high, and the boost of adrenaline can lead to tunnel vision, reckless play, poor decision-making, and costly penalties.Let's explore why every skater has a different optimal performance zone, how to recognize when you're over- or under-activated, and practical strategies for bringing yourself to the level where you play your best.Photo by Lost Creek StudioPodcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzyluscious Follow our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistle/And on IG https://www.instagram.com/power4thwhistle/Interested in sponsoring the podcast? 204 - Celebrate Your Victories!
The WFTDA North America Playoffs in Lansing, Michigan are over, but the story isn't.This week, I recap an incredible weekend of roller derby, share some of my favorite moments from the tournament, and explore a theme that kept appearing throughout the event: celebrating your victories. Not every victory comes with a medal or a trophy or champagne. Sometimes the most important wins are the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the teammates who have your back when things get hard.I also share a personal story about my own team's recent road trip, what we learned from a tough loss, and why I believe some of our biggest victories are not on the scoreboard.Plus, a look ahead at what's next for the podcast as we begin the road to Malmö!!Photo by TacoBoutPainPodcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzyluscious Follow our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistle/And on IG https://www.instagram.com/power4thwhistle/Interested in sponsoring the podcast? The Windy City Rollers are back in the playoff conversation — and they’re coming in smarter, deeper, and more connected than ever than ever on their way to WFTDA North America Northeast Playoffs in Lansing, Michigan. In this episode, we sit down with Windy City skaters Nasty Al, Shake N Bake, D. Ride, and Nicolas Rage to talk about the evolution of one of roller derby’s most cerebral and creatively dangerous teams. This is a conversation about resilience, reinvention, leadership, friendship, and what it means to build a league for the long haul after a mass retirement of 75% of their All Stars in 2015.With goals of medaling at playoffs for the first time since 2014 and pushing Arch Rival harder than ever before, Windy City is entering this season with momentum, depth, and belief.Follow Windy City Rollers @windycityrollersand at https://www.facebook.com/windycityrollersPodcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzylusciousFollow our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistleFollow us on Instagram: @Power4thWhistle

201 - Gotham Roller Derby 2026 WFTDA Playoffs Preview
We're continuing the road to WFTDA North America Northeast Regional Playoffs in Lansing Michigan and are joined by four voices from Gotham Roller Derby: Yeti Or Not Here I Come (Captain) and Kill Valentine from the All Stars and Lone Scar "Tex" (Captain) and Real Quick from the B team, the Wall Street Traitors. Gotham Roller Derby opens up about what it really takes to keep elite roller derby alive in New York City. From the massive roster turnover that reshaped Gotham after 2019 and losing their home practice space during the pandemic to the rise of aged-up junior skaters and rebuilding their competitive culture from the ground up. The league now rotates between multiple practice venues across boroughs, with skaters commuting two hours each way for a single session — all while effectively losing five months of on-skates training every winter and operating on a shoestring budget. The team reflects on their recent breakthrough win over Montreal and how years of trust, resilience, and rebuilding have shaped this new era of Gotham roller derby. The league’s “hive mind” mentality has evolved, and this version of Gotham feels more cohesive than any team they’ve fielded in years. Watch out, the Gotham All Stars have their eyes set on Champs. It's tournament season! In this episode, we preview the road to the 2026 WFTDA North America Northeast Playoffs in Lansing, Michigan coming up May 29th-31st with a deep dive into the Black Rose Rollers. The Black Rose Rollers aren’t supposed to be here—at least not by conventional standards. Hailing from a small Pennsylvania borough instead of a major derby hub, they’ve fought their way into WFTDA Playoffs with a climb that’s been anything but accidental. In this episode, Olive Havoc, Tree, and D-Wrex share the story behind that rise: a shift to intentional, strategy-driven coaching, a roster built on commitment (even when it means hours-long drives to practice), and a culture that thrives on trust, accountability, and checking egos at the door. “Black Rose Who?” may have started as a running joke, but it has become a team identity—and a challenge to anyone still asking. From their “Mom’s Spaghetti” mindset to the moments that defined their breakthrough, this conversation offers a glimpse into how a tight-knit team from an unlikely place turned belief into results. They’ve got one shot. One opportunity.Listen to hear how they got here—and what they plan to do next.Follow Black Rose Rollers @blackroserollersPhoto by Andrew KeyesPodcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzylusciousFollow our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistleFollow us on Instagram: @Power4thWhistle

195 - Handle Hard Better
In this episode, we dig into a powerful mindset shift inspired by Duke basketball coach Kara Lawson: it never gets easier—you just get better at handling hard.Watch Kara Lawson: Handle Hard Better full video: https://youtu.be/oDzfZOfNki4?si=5XSrviqaS000MKqMFrom rookie clinics to high-level gameplay, we break down what “handling hard better” really looks like in roller derby. Whether you’re planning events, pushing through tournaments, or battling your way back from injury, the challenge doesn’t go away—it evolves. And so do you.We talk about why passing basic skills is just the beginning—not the finish line—and how the real challenge comes with learning to take hits, get back up, and keep going again and again. As you grow in the sport, the mental load increases with strategy, rules, and gameplay, all while performing under pressure, fatigue, and uncomfortable conditions. Ultimately, earning trust, responsibility, and more track time comes from proving that you can handle hard.If you’ve ever found yourself waiting for things to feel easier, this episode is your reminder: meaningful pursuits aren’t supposed to be easy. They’re earned by those who show up, push through, and prove—over and over—that they can do hard things.Lace up, lean in, and let’s get stronger together. The book mentioned was Everything Your Coach Never Told You Because You're a Girl: And Other Truths about Winning by Dan BlankPhoto by Meagen Kopacki - PhotographerPodcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzylusciousFollow our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistleFollow us on Instagram: @Power4thWhistle

194 - STOP Spiraling!!
Your thoughts aren’t always telling you the truth—and when you believe every negative one, it’s easy to spiral. Which can be a real distraction in team sports like roller derby. In this episode, we break down what’s really happening when your mind jumps to worst-case scenarios, from “What if I fail?” to “What if I don’t belong?” to "I can't do this!" These thoughts feel real, but they’re often just hypotheses—not facts. And when we don’t challenge them, they can snowball into full-blown mental tornadoes that are hard to escape. You can’t eliminate negative thoughts—but you can change your relationship with them and strengthen your resilience to their effects!Photo by Darren Stehr Podcast logo by Liz Mac Intyre @lizzylusciousTo find about more about the Fast Five Skate Race at K1 Speed in Traverse City, Michigan, go to this link: https://www.tcrollerderby.com/events-2-1/fast-five-skate-at-k1-speedOr follow Traverse City Roller Derby on socials: @tcrollerderbyhttps://www.facebook.com/tcrollerderbyFollow our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistleFollow us on Instagram: @Power4thWhistle

In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Alysa Liu—one of figure skating’s most compelling comeback stories. It’s a story about resilience, mental health, and finding joy in the sport again.Whether you’re a longtime figure skating fan or love a powerful comeback story, this episode dives into the highs, lows, and historic triumph of Alysa Liu. ⛸️🏅Consider this week's episode part 2 on my Olympics Figure Skating coverage translated into sports mindset lessons. 189 - Is Lead Jammer Overpowered? (with special guest Code Adam from Arch Rival)
Today's episode asks big questions. Are there ways to have less blowout games in roller derby? Is lead jammer overpowered? Should we change starts? How has clockwise blocking changed the game? Is roller derby...boring?Code Adam from Arch Rival Roller Derby joins the podcast today to generate more discussion and curiosity about ways to improve the game of roller derby. He has been presenting lots of research on his Instagram profile to compare/contrast our sport with other sports as well as breaking down the flow and nuance of our games in general. His big ask is that the roller derby community take a chance and devote some scrimmage time to testing out new ideas to see what could come of it. Do you like graphs and charts? 188 - When It All Falls Apart
Our heroes become gods...and then sometimes, our gods become human. This week we’re diving into the Olympics, figure skating, the Quad God, and the brutal beauty of performing under pressure. The journey of the seemingly unbeatable Ilia Malinin is one of the biggest stories of this Winter Olympics. Let's explore what happens when the gold feels inevitable… and then suddenly isn’t.Why is it easier to chase than to defend? Why do we play freely when we have nothing to lose—but tighten up when it’s ours to win? And what’s actually happening in our brains when we “choke”?This episode unpacks the psychology of pressure, the art of recovering from mistakes, and how to keep caring deeply without letting nerves take over.If you’ve ever folded when it mattered most—or been afraid you might—this one’s for you.The book referenced in this episode is Choke by Sian Beilock.Photo by WANG ZHAO/AFPPodcast logo by Liz Mac IntyreTo find about more about the K1 Speed Rollerskating Race Event coming up in Traverse City, follow Traverse City Roller Derby on socials: @tcrollerderbyhttps://www.facebook.com/tcrollerderbyFollow our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/powerthru4thwhistleFollow us on Instagram: @Power4thWhistle

187 - Why You NEED an Off Season
Burnout doesn’t show up all at once — it creeps in slowly, disguised as exhaustion, irritability, or the sinking feeling that you’re no longer doing anything well. In this episode, we dig into what burnout looks like in roller derby and in leadership roles, how to recognize when you’re hitting your limits, and why stepping away might be the most powerful move you can make.If you’ve been feeling drained, stuck, or unsure whether you’re still in love with Derby, this episode is your permission slip to breathe, explore, and reset. And now to put on my magic ring and disappear for a bit. I'll be back in 2026 with more episodes! Until then, listen to the previous 186 episodes, take care of yourselves, and each other. xoxo ~ Jackie BauerPhoto by Jason Lome @lomeranger on InstagramPodcast logo by Liz Mac IntyreWould you like to sponsor this podcast and get your message out to our very smart and cool roller derby audience? 186 - The BIG Question: Competitive or Fun? Finding Your Team's Direction
It started with a simple exercise — a wall of sticky notes and one question: Do you want the league to be competitive or fun? What happened next revealed more than anyone expected. Behind each was a story — of why people skate, what they’re chasing, and what they’re afraid to lose. And why they leave when they're not getting what they want from a sport they are passionate about. In this episode, we explore how many teams grapple with identity, ambition, and joy. From the thrill of winning to the sting of being benched, from those who push hard to improve to those who just want to play with their friends — it’s a look at what happens when a community sport asks itself what it truly values. How do you balance the drive to win with the joy of playing? Because in the end, it’s not just about roller derby. It’s about how we define success, and whether being competitive and having fun can ever really coexist.Photo by Jason Lome @lomeranger on InstagramPodcast logo by Liz Mac IntyreWould you like to sponsor this podcast and get your message out to our very smart and cool roller derby audience? 185: The Wheel Deal Documentary
In this episode, I talk to Super Smash Ho aka Nicole Doucette, producer of The Wheel Deal roller derby documentary focusing on the Terminal City Roller Derby league in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This project is a seven episode series, newly released on youtube, free to everyone! This documentary brings to light a very common challenge in roller derby – competitive vs fun in an amateur sport. The age old question: if people come to this sport for different reasons, how do we accommodate everyone and get their needs met? How can we make roller derby more accessible for everyone for the long term health of our sport? These questions and more!Smash’s intro to roller derby was actually through Rolla Skate Club in Vancouver founded by Lulu Demon and BiznessTime (formerly Booty Quake). Rolla Skate Club is a rollerskating center and fitness gym where you can do anything related to rollerskating and short track roller derby! 184 - Break FREE of the Perfection Trap
"We could be freeeee....." This episode is for the perfectionists out there and how we can break ourselves out of cycle of the trap of perfectionism. After injury and self-doubt left me questioning everything, I found myself wrestling with perfectionism, shame, and the fear of not being “enough.” In this episode, I share how I learned to let go of perfection, reconnect with my team, and find strength in imperfection — with a little help from a movie about K-Pop Demon Hunters (maybe you've heard of it ;-) ). JACKIE DANIELS Special Guest! 181 - Longevity in Roller Derby
This week, I welcome one of my favorite people and long time heroes in roller derby to the podcast -- Jackie Daniels! During this Jackie-Jackie connection, you'll hear all about her trail blazing career of 20+ years (so far ;-) ) in our sport. Being part of history at the beginning of the WFTDA in one of the first 30 leagues, Grand Raggidy, and what it was like in that 2005-2010 time period when so much was growing and changing. Then through the golden years of skating at Champs with Windy City and Texas, skating for USA in two World Cups, to now being a member of Rockin City in Round Rock, Texas. What does it take to keep a body and mind engaged to keep playing this sport at such a high level for over two decades? Jackie Daniels' attitude of always wanting to grow, progress, and be coached is inspiring and her example of mindful self care and working smarter is something we can all learn from.Follow Jackie Daniels on IG @jackiedaniels07_jdIf interested in coaching, email [email protected] by Meagen Kopacki - PhotographerPodcast logo by Liz Mac IntyreConcussion Roller Derby is hosting MRDA Champs in Salem Oregon on October 10-12th.
