This installment of The Whys of Judaism explores the world of blessings, asking why Judaism insists that we pause and acknowledge God before enjoying anything in this world. It traces how brachos evolved from spontaneous personal expressions into the standardized formulas we know today, and explains the logic behind their many varieties, from blessings on food and mitzvos to blessings of praise and wonder. Along the way it tackles curious questions, such as why there is no blessing on giving charity, why we say 100 blessings a day, why we remove the knife before Birkas Hamazon, and why Ashkenazim and Sephardim differ on the besamim blessing at Havdalah.

Shoftim chapter 14 tells the story of Shimshon's marriage to a Philistine woman from Timnah, a match his parents object to but that turns out to have a deeper divine purpose. Along the way we meet the famous riddle Shimshon poses at his wedding feast, the betrayal by his bride, and the violence that follows.

This shiur on Shoftim (Judges) chapter 13 traces who the Philistines really were, why Israel's savior came from the tribe of Dan, and what the mysterious angel's hidden name reveals about the miracle of a barren woman having a child. Along the way we meet the unsung hero of the story, Shimshon's unnamed mother, whose quiet faith stands in sharp contrast to her husband Manoach's anxious questions and hints at the destiny of her famous son.

Shoftim 12 is about the end of Yiftach's life, his conflict with the tribe of Ephraim and 3 minor Shoftim. We will examine the history of Ephraim and Menashe and the enigmatic character Ivtzan who is also Boaz and the connection to the book of Iyov and the character of Naomi.

Shoftim 11: Finding an Opening Yiftach is back from exile. The elders who expelled him now need him, and he knows it. Before the battle, he attempts diplomacy, dismantling the Ammonite king's historical revisionism with a careful, point-by-point legal argument rooted in the Exodus narrative. The king ignores him, not because the argument fails, but because he refuses to recognize Yiftach's authority. Then Yiftach makes his vow. This shiur examines the most contested moment in Sefer Shoftim: the neder of Yiftach and what happened to his daughter. We work through the machlokes Rishonim, including the Ramban and Ibn Ezra, on whether the vow demanded death or separation, and why the Gemara in Taanis condemns it in the sharpest terms. The deeper tragedy, however, is institutional. Pinchas could have annulled the vow. Yiftach could have gone to Pinchas. Neither moved. A girl died between their competing pride.
