Flashy achievements make the news. Great triumphs, awesome deeds, transcendent moments grab our attention and seize our imagination. Humdrum acts fail to stir excitement. But when we are devising a strategy for how to prepare our ladder of ascension, it may be ill-advised to pursue quantum leaps of greatness. In fact the most effective process to transformative greatness is slow and gradual and dotted with seeming unremarkable, bite-sized micro movements up a very tall ladder. This idea is hinted to in Rashi's first comment to our Parsha. When we analyze other parts of the Parsha, we see a variety of angles as to why the slow and unremarkable path is optimal. Prayer always makes an impact. Moshe's prayer was exceedingly powerful and made a supercharged impact. But all of Moshe's prayer, and all of his pleading, and all of his incessant Divine entreatment did not succeed in getting God to change his decree barring Moshe from entering the Land. A month before his passing, Moshe gathers the nation for a final message. He begins with a two-verse critique of the nation, not excoriating them for their sins, but gently reprimanding them in a veiled and subtle manner. Moshe then pledges to begin to explain the Torah with scintillating clarity. Before he does so though, he offers a broad retrospective of some of the events of the preceding 40 years. He talks about the nation seeking alternative judges, retells the episode of the spies and its aftereffects, and recounts the nation's encounters with five foreign kingdoms on the east bank of the Jordan: Edom, Moab, Ammon, and the twin nations of Sichon and Og. A year after the Exodus Moshe dispatched a contingency of dignified men to scout the land of Canaan prior to the Nation's invasion. It was a catastrophic debacle. The scouts returned with a devastating, slanderous report about the Land, prompting the nation to bewail needlessly all night, and condemning the nation to 40 years of wondering in the Wilderness. The day of the return of the scouts was designated for misfortune. On this day, the ninth day of the month of Av, both temples were destroyed. The Midrash tells us that there is a causal link: because the nation cried needlessly on this night, they were condemned to cry for a very good reason on this night. The Temple is a central component of our religion. Ever since it was destroyed by the Romans, our nation has been operating in a suboptimal fashion. Certainly, we have prayers to match the sacrifices of God, and our Torah Academy halls, the four cubits of halacha, is a place where the divine presence rests; we have the Almighty's precious mitzvos, and we have the opportunity to pray to Him and to repent and return to Him, but something vital is missing. Absent a Temple, the world is blanketed in darkness. Absent the Temple, it is as if there is a thick metal blockade separating us from our Father in heaven. It doesn't need to be like this. The Temple can be rebuilt, and we can and must play a part. What can we do to build the Third Temple? Freedom of speech is enshrined in the First Amendment. Our society allows people to say whatever they want so long as they're not perjuring themselves or making explicit calls to violence. In our society, words don't carry weight. A verbal agreement without a signed contract carried no legal muster. The Book of Bamidbar ends on a bit of a surprising note. The final chapter of our book revisits the somewhat technical narrative relating to the inheritance of the ancestral lands of a man named Tzelafchad. This man from the tribe of Menashe died without sons, and in chapter 27 of the book of numbers we learned that his lands will be apportioned to his daughters in lieu of male heirs. One may have thought that the saga of Tzelafchad was all settled. But no. The final chapter of the book revisits this story and offers an epilogue to it. Certain legends are irreplaceable. There was never a man like Moshe who spoke to God face to face. Aaron, the first high priest, set an incredibly high bar for all high priests who followed. In this week's Parsha, successors are designated for both Moshe and Aaron. Aaron's grandson Pinchas was elevated to the priesthood which would eventually become the high priest. Moshe's trusty attendant Joshua was selected to replace Moshe. Why were these two people selected for these prestigious roles? When we examine the ascension of Joshua and Pinchas, we find two very different paths. For aspirants of high offices it is important to learn the different pathways to greatness. But even if we don't have designs on a great office, it is incumbent upon us achieve personal greatness. Pinchas, Aaron's grandson, did a valorous and zealous act of bravery when he skewered the prince of the tribe of Shimon and stopped the plague from wiping out the entire nation. What motivated Pinchas' behavior? What attributes were at play during his act of zealotry? This question is answered in a comment in Rashi in our Parsha. We learn how qualities and attributes that are present in antecedents are manifested in their descendants. Character is heritable. That same theme is featured elsewhere in our Parsha, when the daughter is of Tzalafchad seek a portion in the land of Israel, in a manner similar to that of their antecedent Joseph. When we zoom out, we discover that the heritability of character, both good and bad, is featured in many many places in the literature. The sorcerer/prophet of the nations, Balaam, sought to curse the Israelites, but his attempts were thwarted. The Talmud reveals some very interesting elements of his botched effort. In Parshas Chukas, we read about a highly unusual mitzvah: The Red Heifer, when an entirely red cow is burned together with a motley concoction of ingredients, and the resultant ashes are used to sprinkle on people that came into contact with dead people in order to purify them from their spiritual contamination. We also learn about the passing of Miriam and Aaron, and the multiple battles that the nation participated in on the Eastern bank of the Jordan, and we puzzle over the sin that condemned Moses and Aaron to die before entering the Land. Parshas Balak begins after the Jewish nation trounced the mighty kingdoms of Sichon and Og, the comparatively smaller and weaker kingdom of Moab resorted to unconventional warfare to attack the nation by hiring the prophet of the nations, a wily and devious character named Bilaam, to curse the Jews. Cousins don't always agree on everything. Korach and Moshe had a disagreement, a debate. Moshe was instructed by God that the nation is limited to one high priest, Aaron. Korach argued that the entire nation is entirely holy, and why can't everyone be a high priest? Korach has some apparent legitimacy to his perspective. Prior to the Sinai Revelation, Moshe told the nation that if they accept the terms of the covenant, they will be a "kingdom of priests and a holy nation." The whole nation is holy; the whole nation is priests. But Korach's debate is classified as a debate, "not for the sake of heaven." When done properly, debate is utterly transformative. We all have weaknesses. Nations, as well, have witnesses. When the Almighty sought to give the Torah to the Jewish people at Sinai, He first offered it to all the nations. When they asked what was included in it, God revealed to them how the Torah disallowed that particular weakness that that particular Nation had. What is the Jewish weakness? What is our kryptonite? There are two wives – two women whose names we don't even know – who caused seismic, tectonic shifts in the fates and the fortunes of their husbands, their families, their tribes, and the nation at large. 254 men were part of the Korach rebellion against Moshe and Aaron. 253 of them perished. On(e) survived thanks to his wife. The ringleader of this rebellion was incited to undertake this insurrection due to his wife. These wives carry a lot of sway over their husbands. Prior to initiating the war of conquest of the land of Canaan, the nation did the prudent thing: they undertook a reconnaissance mission to scout out the enemy defenses. Moshe selected 12 righteous men, one from each tribe, to traverse the land and inspect it from the inside. The result was a catastrophic disaster: the scouts brought a devastating report about the land, prompting the people to lose faith in God and in the prospect of entering Canaan. The longest Parsha in the Torah (Nasso) contains a seemingly unconnected string of subjects. It begins by detailing the responsibilities of adult working-age Levites from three Levite families, followed by a census of those Levites. In the middle of the Parsha contains the laws of the sotah (the suspected adulteress) and the Nazir (a person who accepts upon himself a vow to refrain from wine, coming into contact with the dead, and haircuts for a period of time, typically 30 days), and the priestly blessing (the special blessing formula that priests are commanded to bless Israel with). The Parsha ends with the special gifts and tributes given by the princes of the 12 tribes of Israel on the day of the inauguration of the Tabernacle and on the eleven subsequent days. At first glance, it seems very hard to find a common thread connecting these disparate subjects. Not everyone loves math and numbers. I've heard disturbing rumors that there are some people who even claim to hate math and get irritated when they see numbers. The Book of Bamidbar is called the Book of Numbers because there are a lot of numbers, and in no place are there more numbers than in our Parsha. We read about the numbers of each tribe individually, and then we read about the numbers of each trio of tribes in the four quadrants surrounding the Tabernacle. The number of Levites, the number of firstborn. The truth is, it's not a numbers game. There's something absolutely profound found in the censuses in our Parsha. In this transformative podcast, we learn how the census, the orientation of the nation around the Tabernacle, the flags, and the segregation of the Levites from the Israelites reveal the two different modes of Divine Service: the Israelite mode and the Levite mode. I don't know many farmers. This country used to be an agrarian society, but today fewer than 2% of Americans are farmers. This was not the case in antiquity. Lag Ba'Omer is a unique day in the Jewish calendar. It's a minor festival celebrated in surprising ways for surprising reasons: on this day, the plague that was ravaging the the students of Rabbi Akiva ceased. On this day as well, Rabbi Akiva's prize student, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochi, died. The death of a great sage is more of a transition to the heavenly academy. Rabbi Shimon, the great cognoscente and promulgator of the Kabbalistic Torah, ascended to heaven on this auspicious day, and therefore, the power of his life, lessons, and teachings is particularly strong on this day. The Priests are the noblest amongst us, direct descendants of Aaron, the legendary first priest. They have a very important role to play amongst their people. They have a special blessing that they can bestow upon the people, and they can process sacrifices on our behalf in the Temple. They are spiritual leaders of men. With this role of distinction come certain restrictions: who they can marry, who they can come into contact with. They are forbidden to come into contact with the dead. This week's double-parsha contains a smorgasbord of mitzvos. The three chapters of Parshas Acharei cover three general categories. First we read about the Yom Kippur sacrifices and procedures; then we learn about the prohibitions against the consumption of blood among other ritualistic and sacrificial laws, and the final chapter is oriented around the many prohibited sexual relationships.
