CULTURE TUESDAY - Animal Farm Review by Helena Judd
Ora et Labora... et Cinema? St Benedict, Animal Farm and Family Film Nights.Pray and work, said St Benedict, but rest matters too! So last week, Helena and her family swapped the labora for the cinema and watched the new Animal Farm, directed by Andy Serkis and distributed by Angel Studios. The boys loved it. Mum had questions. In this episode of Culture Tuesday, Helena takes a Catholic look at Orwell's classic tale re-imagined for families. Why does Orwell give a powerful story of corrupted power so brilliantly, yet offers no cure? What does Moses the raven and his Sugarcandy Mountain get wrong about Christian hope? And where does true human dignity come from, if not from politics? Plus: the case for watching hard stories with your children rather than hiding from them, a warm recommendation for the Wingfeather Saga on Angel Studios, and why an air conditioned cinema followed by a good conversation might be the perfect way to spend a hot July afternoon. Just make sure you chat about it afterwards. Please consider supporting us with a one-off or monthly donation. AFTERNOONS WITH RADIO MARIA - The Jesuit Refugee Service UK & World Refugee Day.
Saturday, 20th June was World Refugee Day — and the situation facing refugees in Britain has never been more urgent. Children are being wrongly detained in prison-like conditions. Families are trapped in limbo, unable to work or plan for the future. And a wave of restrictive laws and policies is making it harder than ever for people fleeing war and persecution to find the safety they desperately need. In this special programme, we sat down with Liam Allmark, Head of Communications, Fundraising and Advocacy at the Jesuit Refugee Service UK, to cut through the political noise and get to the heart of what is really happening — and what needs to change. We talk about JRS UK's landmark Welcome the Stranger campaign, the shocking findings of their latest briefing on children in detention, the human cost of a system that forces people to live in permanent uncertainty, and the role faith communities can play in turning solidarity into action. This is not just a policy conversation. It is a conversation about human dignity — and about the kind of country we choose to be. What we cover:The Welcome the Stranger campaign and its core demandsChildren wrongly detained under the UK-France schemeThe psychological toll of living in the asylum systemHow the Church and faith communities can respondWhere hope lives on World Refugee DayTo get involved with the campaign, visit jrsuk.net/defend-asylum#WorldRefugeeDay #RefugeeRights #JRSUK #WelcomeTheStranger #DefendAsylum #PodcastPlease consider supporting us with a one-off or monthly donation. SPECIAL - HCPT Changes Lives, One Pilgrimage at a Time
In this special programme, Catherine Baril sat down with Margaret Duff, East Anglia Region Representative for HCPT, to explore the remarkable ways this charity transforms lives — not just for the young pilgrims it brings to Lourdes each year, but for the countless volunteers who give their time, energy and hearts in support. From those who travel alongside the pilgrims to Lourdes, to those who roll up their sleeves to raise vital funds back home, the HCPT community is one built on faith, generosity, and joy. We hear the inspiring story of a group of Cambridge college students who, moved by the cherished memories of their friend Daniel — a long-time HCPT pilgrim — decided to take action. Joining Daniel on the programme, Kuba and André share how they laced up their cycling shoes and embarked on a challenging bike ride from Cambridge to the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich, turning friendship and faith into something truly meaningful.Along the way, you'll hear about the heart and mission of HCPT, learn to lean into one of its most beloved and faith-filled mottos — "No Problem" — and perhaps feel a gentle nudge to begin a pilgrimage journey of your own.Whether you're already part of the HCPT family or hearing about it for the very first time, this episode is sure to leave you encouraged, uplifted, and inspired. Please consider supporting us with a one-off or monthly donation. Culture Tuesday - Corpus Christi on the Streets of Aberdeen
What does it actually take to bring a centuries-old Catholic procession through the streets of a Scottish city in 2026? Quite a lot, it turns out — including negotiations with the council, a plan for the umbrellas, a playlist and somewhere for people to pray. Jose Carias joins us this week to pull back the curtain on the meticulous behind-the-scenes work that goes into organising Aberdeen's Corpus Christi Procession, as the faithful walk from St Mary of the Assumption Cathedral to St Peter's Church. From choosing the sacred music to coordinating street closures, Jose walks us through every detail — the spiritual and the surprisingly logistical — that transforms a solemn act of public worship into a living, breathing event on the city's streets. It's a conversation that moves from the sublime to the mundane and back again because, as Jose reminds us, when Jesus comes to walk the streets, things have a way of getting complicated.
