Episode 73 | Matthew Wyatt | Leaving Mormonism, Surviving Addiction & Finding Jesus
Matthew Wyatt’s story is one of addiction, destruction, faith, redemption, and what can happen when a man finally reaches the point of complete surrender. In this episode of Rain Brings Growth, Matthew shares the brutally honest story behind the man people see today.Growing up in a deeply rooted LDS/Mormon family in small-town Washington, Matthew was raised around faith but eventually began questioning what he had been taught. His search for truth led him to study different religions, wrestle with the identity of Jesus, and eventually develop a completely different understanding of Christianity and his relationship with God.But Matthew’s spiritual journey was only part of the battle. After being prescribed pain medication, what began as legitimate use slowly developed into a devastating prescription drug addiction. His addiction escalated into stealing, prescription fraud, multiple dealers, arrests, felony charges, jail, job loss, alcoholism, broken trust, and a marriage hanging by a thread. At one of the lowest points of his life, Matthew’s wife discovered dozens of empty vodka bottles he had hidden from his family. Divorce papers were on the table, and Matthew believed his wife and daughter would be better off without him.On July 20, 2009, he decided to take his own life. But in the final moments, something changed.Matthew cried out to God and surrendered everything. The next morning, he and his wife began calling rehab facilities. The only facility that called him back was a faith-based treatment center. What was supposed to be 30 days became 90 days.Matthew says that season became less about simply overcoming addiction and more about falling in love with Jesus. From there, his life began rebuilding piece by piece. His marriage survived. His relationship with his daughter was restored. He entered ministry, became a youth pastor, family care pastor, and eventually returned to the same small Washington town where his addiction and arrest had once become public knowledge — this time as a lead pastor.Matthew also shares the powerful story of using the same Bible that once held his suicide note to eventually preach, minister to others, and even lead his father-in-law to Christ before his death.Years later, Matthew would earn multiple degrees, including a doctorate in ministry, while continuing to follow what he believed God was calling him to do. After leaving pastoral ministry, moving to Idaho, and spending nearly 10 months driving DoorDash despite his education and ministry experience, another door eventually opened.Today, Matthew serves as Church Engagement Director for the Idaho Family Policy Center, working with pastors and churches across Idaho while continuing his ministry outside of the traditional pastor role. This conversation goes far beyond addiction recovery.Matt and Matthew talk about:• Growing up LDS/Mormon and beginning to question his beliefs• Searching for truth and discovering Christianity for himself• LDS doctrine, Mormon culture, Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon• Prescription painkiller addiction• Prescription fraud, theft, felony charges, and jail• Alcoholism and hiding addiction from his wife• Losing jobs and destroying trust within his family• The moment his wife was ready to leave• His July 20, 2009 suicide attempt• Crying out to God and completely surrendering• Spending 90 days in a faith-based rehab• Rebuilding his marriage after addiction• Becoming the father and husband he wanted to be• Transitioning from addiction and incarceration into ministry• Returning to his hometown as a pastor• Forgiveness, grace, and redemption• Marriage, leadership, prayer, and reading Scripture• Leaving pastoral ministry and entering a season of uncertainty• Going from earning a doctorate to driving DoorDash• Following God when the next step doesn’t make sense• His current work with the Idaho Family Policy Center• Why your past doesn’t have to determine what God can do with your futureThis is a story about what people don’t see behind the phrase “must be nice.”The pastor, husband, father, and leader people see today came through addiction, jail, broken relationships, suicidal despair, rehab, and years of rebuilding. If you’re struggling with addiction, questioning your faith, rebuilding your marriage, trying to overcome your past, or wondering whether your life can still have purpose after your worst decisions, this conversation is for you.Follow Matthew Wyatt on Facebook to keep up with his work and ministry.Subscribe to Rain Brings Growth for more real conversations about faith, addiction recovery, mental health, fatherhood, marriage, adversity, personal growth, and the stories behind successful people.#RainBringsGrowth #MatthewWyatt #AddictionRecovery #ChristianTestimony #Faith #JesusChrist #RecoveryStory #Mormonism #LDS #ExMormon #ChristianPodcast #SuicideSurvivor #Rehab #Redemption #MarriageRestoration #MensMentalHealth #Pastor #Idaho

Episode 72 | Dave Vargas | What 20 Years in Law Enforcement Did to Me
What happens when 20 years in law enforcement, years of SWAT operations, accumulated trauma, and the pressure to always be the strong one finally become too much?In this episode of the Rain Brings Growth Podcast, Dave Vargas shares his journey from Division I football and a career in law enforcement to SWAT, leadership, faith, fatherhood, and ultimately confronting the trauma he spent years carrying.Dave grew up believing toughness meant pushing through, staying in control, and handling whatever life put in front of him. That mentality served him throughout athletics and law enforcement, but over time, the things he experienced on the job began adding up. Like many men, instead of dealing with the weight, he learned to bury it and keep moving. This conversation goes far beyond police work.Dave opens up about masculinity, PTSD and trauma in law enforcement, marriage, fatherhood, anger, vulnerability, faith in Jesus, and the difficulty men have surrendering control. We talk about the difference between being a dangerous man and an uncontrolled man, why strength and vulnerability can coexist, and what it really means to become the man your family can depend on.Dave also shares the story behind The Forge, a Christian men's gym and brotherhood built to give men a place to train physically while strengthening themselves mentally and spiritually. What started with a desire to help one man has grown into something much bigger: a community where men can be honest about their struggles without judgment while challenging each other to become better husbands, fathers, leaders, and followers of Christ. In this episode, we dive into:• Dave's journey from Division I football into law enforcement• Nearly 20 years of police and SWAT experience• The cumulative effects of trauma and PTSD• Why law enforcement officers often struggle in silence• Suppressing emotions and what happens when they eventually surface• Anger, emotional control, and learning to "be the thermostat"• Biblical masculinity and what it means to be a strong man• Protecting and providing for your family• Marriage, fatherhood, leadership, and generational patterns• Walking away from faith and eventually finding his way back to Jesus• The difference between religion and a relationship with God• Faith versus fear and learning to surrender control• Why vulnerability doesn't make a man weak• Brotherhood and the importance of men having other men in their corner• The mission behind The Forge• Turning pain and past experiences into purposeThis is a conversation for police officers, first responders, veterans, fathers, husbands, and any man who has spent years telling himself to suck it up, bury what happened, and keep moving.Sometimes strength isn't carrying everything forever.Sometimes strength is finally being willing to put it down.If Dave's story resonates with you, send this episode to a man who needs to hear it.Subscribe to Rain Brings Growth for more conversations about adversity, faith, personal growth, mental health, fatherhood, leadership, recovery, fitness, and the stories behind the struggles that shaped people into who they are today.#RainBringsGrowth #DaveVargas #LawEnforcement #SWAT #PolicePTSD #FirstResponderMentalHealth #PTSD #MensMentalHealth #ChristianMen #BiblicalManhood #Faith #Jesus #MensMinistry #Fatherhood #Leadership #TraumaRecovery #PoliceOfficer #FirstResponders

Episode 71 | Victor Villarreal | From Gang Life and Prison to Breaking Generational Cycles
In Episode 71 of the Rain Brings Growth Podcast, Matt sits down with Victor Villarreal for one of the most raw and powerful stories shared on the show.Victor grew up in Caldwell, Idaho with six sisters, a single mom, and a childhood marked by domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, sexual abuse, and the pressure of becoming a protector far too young. From an early age, he felt responsible for protecting his sisters while trying to survive chaos inside the home.At 13, Victor was jumped into a gang.By 14, he was walking around with a sawed-off shotgun.By 16, he was a father. And before he ever had the chance to fully understand who he was, Victor was already caught in street life, survival mode, violence, drugs, and a distorted idea of love, loyalty, and manhood.Victor opens up about being sexually abused, watching domestic violence at home, being labeled as the problem, being placed on medications instead of being asked what was happening behind closed doors, and how abuse shaped the way he viewed love, family, masculinity, and protection. He also shares how gang life gave him a sense of brotherhood that felt familiar because violence followed by acceptance was already normalized in his home. This episode dives into Victor’s journey through gang life, becoming a teen father, a drive-by shooting at his family’s home, leaving Caldwell to try to build a better life, getting involved in the drug trade, being shot, going to juvenile prison, spending years away from his daughter and family, and eventually entering the adult prison system.Victor does not tell his story to glorify the streets. He tells it to show how much pain, trauma, and brokenness can sit underneath the choices people make.Throughout the conversation, Victor talks about ownership, accountability, and the hard truth that hurt people often keep hurting people until someone finally decides the cycle stops with them. He shares how prison stripped everything away and forced him to ask who he really was without the image, the reputation, the money, the women, the drugs, or the street identity. While incarcerated, Victor found escape through fitness, drawing, and eventually barbering. A simple prison haircut became a turning point that showed him how much confidence and dignity could be restored through his hands. That moment helped lead him into barbering, scalp micropigmentation, tattooing, and eventually building Realtime Results LLC.Today, Victor is a successful business owner, father, mentor, and community leader using his past to help others find a different path.He talks about walking back into the same prison system he once hated, now sitting with wardens, parole officers, residents, and community leaders to help build better programs, better conversations, and better outcomes for people trying to re-enter society.Victor also shares his work with Connect Correct, a nonprofit focused on bridging the gap between prison and society’s resources, targeting trauma, addiction, re-entry, mentorship, accountability, and helping people build a clearer plan when they come home. This conversation covers gang culture, childhood trauma, fatherhood, prison reform, addiction, domestic violence, faith, baptism, mentoring, re-entry programs, accountability, and what it means to become the man your younger self needed.Victor’s story is a reminder that God does not waste a hurt. The same pain that almost destroyed him is now being used to help others heal, grow, and break the cycles that have been passed down for generations.Topics discussed:Victor Villarreal’s childhood in Caldwell, IdahoGrowing up with six sistersDomestic violence, addiction, and sexual abuseBecoming the protector of his familyGetting jumped into a gang at 13Walking around with a sawed-off shotgun as a kidHow gang life distorted love and brotherhoodBecoming a teen father at 16Drive-by shootings and street violence in CaldwellSelling drugs and survival modeBeing shot multiple timesJuvenile prison and adult prisonFeeling abandoned while locked upFinding father figures inside the systemAddiction, heroin, meth, and methadoneWorking out in prisonFinding purpose through barberingScalp micropigmentation and restoring confidenceBuilding Realtime Results LLCTaking ownership instead of blaming othersBreaking generational traumaFatherhood and supervised visitsWalking back into prison as a mentorConnect Correct nonprofitPrison re-entry and rehabilitationPrograms like RISE, Restoring Promise, and Just for UsWorking with law enforcement and community leadersDomestic violence awarenessFaith, baptism, and God’s role in Victor’s lifeUsing pain to help the next man, woman, and childRain Brings Growth PodcastReal stories. Episode 68 | Taylor Donaldson | From Marine to Bodybuilder Finding Herself
In Episode 68 of the Rain Brings Growth Podcast, Matt sits down with Taylor Donaldson for a raw conversation about the Marine Corps, bodybuilding, toxic relationships, identity, trauma, death, discipline, and rebuilding yourself from the inside out.Taylor grew up in Minnesota, played sports year-round, and eventually enlisted in the Marine Corps behind her mom’s back. The Marines forced her to grow up fast, taught her discipline, and gave her the mental toughness she would later carry into bodybuilding prep, blue-collar work, and life after trauma. She opens up about Marine Corps boot camp, working as a diesel operator, driving semi, paving asphalt and concrete, delivering appliances, and becoming the first woman hired in multiple male-dominated jobs.Taylor also shares the darker side of her story, including a toxic marriage, trauma bonding, emotional abuse, losing herself in a masculine identity, and eventually finding her feminine side again after moving to Idaho. She talks about meeting her husband, becoming a stay-at-home wife, building a relationship with her stepson, and learning what healthy love and support actually feels like. One of the heaviest parts of this episode is Taylor’s time working in a funeral home. She shares why becoming a mortician was once her dream, what it was like working with dead bodies, and how seeing a 12-year-old who had taken her own life on her first day changed the way she viewed death, grief, and life itself.Taylor also dives deep into her bodybuilding journey. After missing her Boise show because of a live stream delay, she owned the mistake, made a viral video about it, and came back one week later to compete in Salt Lake City. That decision helped her qualify for nationals and continue chasing a version of herself she once thought was impossible. This episode covers bodybuilding prep, reverse dieting, post-show blues, coach red flags, health risks in the sport, female bodybuilding, body image, food fear, posing, discipline, and why no trophy is worth losing yourself over.Taylor’s story is about survival, self-awareness, discipline, and healing. Episode 66 | Kevino Lewis | Loyalty, Guns, Racism & the Split-Second Choices That Change Your Life
Kevino is BACK on the Rain Brings Growth Podcast, and somehow this conversation gets even crazier than the first one. From getting arrested in the military with a loaded gun in his car to street culture, racism, loyalty, ego, relationships, aliens, Waffle House at 2 AM, bad DoorDash drivers, and the split-second decisions that can completely change the direction of your life... nothing was off limits. But underneath all the wild stories and laughs is a deeper conversation about something we all face:Who are you going to be when that moment comes? The old you?Or the person you're trying to become? We talk about the difference between protecting yourself and protecting your ego, why loyalty can sometimes cost you everything, learning to accept the consequences of your own decisions, being judged by people who don't know your full story, and why you can learn from your mistakes without living with regret.Kevino opens up about being arrested while serving in the military, eventually getting out, and refusing to let that chapter define the rest of his life.He also shares his perspective on racism, stereotypes, police interactions, street culture, gun ownership, cancel culture, comedy, conspiracy theories, and one unexplained late-night experience that had him wondering if aliens had finally arrived. This episode is chaotic. It's honest. It's hilarious. And somehow, between all the crazy stories, there are some powerful lessons about growth, accountability, loyalty, consequences, and becoming honest about who you really are.Because growth doesn't mean pretending your past never happened. It means owning it, learning from it, and deciding who you're going to be moving forward.Watch the full episode and let us know your biggest takeaway in the comments.SUBSCRIBE for more real conversations about adversity, growth, mindset, faith, recovery, and the stories behind the success people often look at and say, "Must be nice."Rain Brings Growth PodcastAvailable on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.#RainBringsGrowth #Podcast #MilitaryStories #PersonalGrowth #Mindset #Accountability #LifeLessons #Veteran #OvercomingAdversity #MensMentalHealth #GrowthMindset #RealConversations

That loss sent him into a dark place filled with anger, confusion, guilt, depression, self-harm, drinking, smoking, and eventually thoughts of not wanting to be alive. He blamed God for taking his dad.He blamed himself for not saving him.He believed that if God was real, then God must hate him.But in one of the lowest moments of his life, Kevin finally cried out and asked God for help. What happened next completely changed the direction of his life. Fitness became an outlet. The gym gave him momentum. Faith gave him purpose. And eventually, Kevin realized that the God he spent years pushing away had been with him the entire time.Kevin opens up about the soccer coach who unknowingly planted seeds of faith in him simply through acts of service, giving him cleats, driving him to practice, and playing Christian radio in the car. Years later, those small moments became part of the path that led Kevin back to God.That journey eventually led him to drop out of college, return home, buy gym equipment from Facebook Marketplace, start a gym in his mom’s garage, and build what would become Beyond Barbell, a faith-centered gym and clothing brand focused on helping people grow spiritually, mentally, and physically.Cody also opens up about his own walk with Christ, getting baptized, joining Bible study, going through regeneration, becoming more intentional with his platform, and making the decision that he no longer wants to be known as a content creator who happens to be Christian. He wants to be known as a Christian first. This episode goes deep into what it means to stop chasing approval from the world, how your environment shapes who you become, why faith and fitness can transform a man’s life, the difference between conviction and condemnation, how to plant seeds without forcing religion on people, and why some of the smallest acts of kindness can completely change the trajectory of someone’s life. The three also talk about fatherhood, losing a dad, growing up without a consistent father figure, finding identity through the Heavenly Father, trusting God through pain, and the powerful realization that not everything happens for a reason, but God can make a reason out of everything that happened. This conversation is honest, vulnerable, funny, challenging, and deeply faith-centered.It is about three men at different points in their walks with Christ trying to become better husbands, fathers, leaders, and disciples while learning how to stand firm in a world that constantly pulls them in the opposite direction.Topics discussed:Kevin Bravo’s childhood and losing his father at 12Blaming God after his dad’s deathDepression, self-harm, anger, and suicidal thoughtsHow one Christian soccer coach planted a seed without preachingFinding God through music, prayer, and surrenderHow fitness helped Kevin rebuild his lifeOpening a gym after dropping out of collegeBuilding Beyond Barbell Gym and Beyond Barbell ClothingFaith and fitness as tools for changing a man’s lifeCody Fernley’s baptism and growing faith journeyBecoming a Christian first and content creator secondThe difference between conviction and condemnationWhy Christians should stop chasing worldly approvalHow environment, music, friendships, and social media shape your mindsetThe importance of Christian brotherhood and communityFatherhood and growing up without a steady father figureGod as a father to the fatherlessWhy not everything happens for a reasonHow God can turn pain into purposeHow to plant seeds of faith without forcing religion on peopleThe importance of standing firm in your faithSpreading the Gospel through everyday actionsWhy the gym can become a place for physical, mental, and spiritual growthFull surrender and trusting the Holy SpiritHow to help family and friends find faith without pushing them awayFollow Kevin Bravo:Beyond Barbell ClothingBeyond Barbell GymKevin Bravo on Instagram: @KevinBrvoFollow Cody Fernley:Instagram: @Cody_FernleyBevLab MediaRain Brings Growth PodcastReal stories.
