106. Are You Resting Enough to Heal? How to Give Your Body the Recovery It Needs
What if you’re sleeping enough, but still not giving your body the kind of rest it needs to heal? When you’re facing serious illness, it’s easy to turn healing into a full-time job: researching treatments, changing your diet, exercising, attending appointments, taking supplements, managing symptoms, and constantly trying to figure out what you should do next. But your body also needs time when you stop asking it to perform. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore why recovery is an active part of healing—and why true rest involves much more than simply getting enough sleep.Through the remarkable recovery stories of Dr. Terry Wahls, who went from progressive multiple sclerosis and a tilt-recline wheelchair to riding a bicycle again, and breast cancer survivor Sylvie Lessard, we’ll look at what can happen when recovery, replenishment, and enjoyment become intentional parts of a healing plan. You’ll discover:What happens inside your body during sleep and why it matters for tissue repair, muscle, hormones, and immune regulationWhy meditation and other forms of wakeful rest may help reduce fatigue and physiological stressWhy enjoyable activities like music, reading, time outside, creativity, and laughter can be genuinely restorativeHow to tell the difference between restorative rest and inactivity that may contribute to weakness and deconditioningWhy movement and rest aren't opposites—and why healing may depend on the rhythm between challenge and recoveryHow to stop waiting until you’re completely depleted before giving your body a chance to recoverMost importantly, you’ll learn how to create a simple recovery rhythm that fits your current capacity, including better sleep, small periods of wakeful rest, enjoyable activities that replenish you, and appropriately timed movement.Listen now to learn how to give your body more opportunities to recover from everything you’re asking it to do, without assuming that healing means spending your life in bed.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not provide medical advice. 105. How Stepping Outside Helps You Heal: The Unexpected Power of Nature for Recovery
What if one of the simplest ways to support your healing is waiting right outside your door?Serious illness can shrink your world. Between fatigue, pain, treatments, appointments, hospital rooms, and long stretches spent resting indoors, it can become surprisingly easy to go days without meaningful exposure to daylight, fresh air, trees, open sky, or the natural world. But stepping outside may affect far more than your mood.In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore what happens inside the body when you spend time outside—and why nature may deserve a place in your healing plan. You’ll hear the remarkable story of Shin Tereyama, who was sent home under hospice care after advanced kidney cancer spread to his lungs and rectum. Extremely frail and dependent on a walker, Shin began climbing to the roof of his apartment building before sunrise each morning simply to breathe fresh air, feel the morning light, and give thanks for another day. Nature became one part of a much larger transformation in how he lived, and over the following years, his cancer gradually disappeared. We’ll also look at research suggesting that exposure to nature and outdoor light can influence the nervous system, cardiovascular function, inflammation, circadian rhythm, attention, and even aspects of immune activity. In this episode, you’ll discover:Why natural environments may help shift your body out of chronic stress and toward a more restorative stateWhat researchers learned when hospital patients recovering from surgery had a view of trees instead of a brick wallWhy morning outdoor light helps regulate the circadian rhythms involved in sleep, metabolism, hormones, and immune functionWhat research on green spaces has found about blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and inflammatory markersThe intriguing connection between forests, phytoncides, and natural killer-cell activityWhy nature can give an exhausted brain a break from the constant mental demands of serious illnessHow to receive some of these benefits even if illness, disability, or treatment makes it difficult to leave your homeListen now to learn how to create a simple nature practice that meets your body exactly where it is today and gives you another practical way to participate in your healing.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not provide medical advice. 104. Feel It to Heal It: What to Do With Fear, Anger, and Grief
When you're facing a serious illness, the pressure to "stay positive" can become one more thing to worry about. You may already be frightened about your diagnosis, angry about what has happened, or grieving everything illness has changed, only to wonder whether feeling those emotions could somehow interfere with your recovery. But healing emotionally does not require you to be happy all the time.In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore the important difference between feeling a difficult emotion, suppressing it, and becoming stuck in it, and what research suggests may happen inside the body when emotions are continually pushed down rather than allowed to move through us.You'll also hear the remarkable remission story of Di Foster, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer after her cancer spread extensively to both lungs and was told she had approximately 12 months to live. Di came to believe that genuine positivity wasn't about avoiding fear, anger, or sadness at all. It was about becoming willing to face those emotions honestly so she could continue living fully alongside them.In this episode, you'll discover:Why you do not have to stay positive every moment in order to support healingThe difference between emotional suppression and healthy emotional regulationWhat happens physiologically when we try to hide or contain difficult emotionsWhat studies involving trauma, immune function, cancer, and chronic illness have found about emotional expression and acceptanceWhy processing an emotion is different from repeatedly ruminating on itHow to recognize when reflection has stopped helping and started keeping your body stuck in the same stress responseA practical process for safely making room for fear, anger, sadness, and grief and then allowing yourself to move forwardListen now to learn how to tend the whole emotional garden, giving the weeds the attention they need without forgetting to make room for the flowers.Join my free email community for practical healing tools, research, survivor stories, and encouragement between episodes:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 103. Why Joy Belongs in Your Healing Plan: What Just 5 Minutes a Day Can Do
What if just five minutes of genuine joy each day could change what is happening inside your body while you heal? When you're facing a serious or chronic illness, being told to "stay positive" can feel dismissive—or downright impossible. But making room for positive emotion isn't the same as pretending everything is okay. You can be frightened, angry, grieving, or uncertain and still give your body moments of laughter, gratitude, beauty, connection, and joy.In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore what science tells us about the physical effects of positive emotion—and why joy may deserve an intentional place in your healing plan. You'll hear the story of Christy Cromwell, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and began deliberately practicing joy while living with the uncertainty of her diagnosis. Rather than waiting until she was well to give herself permission to be happy, she brought laughter, photography, gratitude, and meaningful experiences back into her life while the tumor was still there. We'll also explore research into the "undoing effect" of positive emotions, cortisol and inflammation, laughter and immune activity, gratitude, sleep, and cardiovascular recovery from stress. In this episode, you'll discover:Why positive emotions can help your body recover after periods of stressWhat joy and laughter may do to your nervous, cardiovascular, hormonal, and immune systemsWhy practicing joy does not mean suppressing fear, sadness, anger, or griefHow gratitude can retrain a brain that has become consumed with scanning for dangerWhy laughter may be more biologically meaningful than we give it credit forHow to create your own "joy list" and "joy squad"A simple five-minute daily practice for bringing positive emotion back into your life—even when you're sick, exhausted, or frightenedMost importantly, you'll learn why you don't have to wait for treatment to end, remission to arrive, or life to become easier before allowing yourself to experience some of the life you're fighting so hard to preserve.Listen now to discover why joy isn't frivolous during serious illness—and how small moments of positive emotion can become part of the environment you're creating for healing.Join my free email community for practical healing tools, research, survivor stories, and encouragement between episodes:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 101. Can Forgiveness Help Your Body Heal? What Releasing Old Hurts Does to Recovery
What if an old hurt can continue triggering a physical stress response long after the actual danger has passed? In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore what happens when anger, resentment, and painful memories are repeatedly relived in the body—and whether forgiveness can help create a different internal environment for healing. You’ll hear the extraordinary story of Evy McDonald, who was diagnosed with ALS at 29 and given approximately one year to live. As her condition worsened, Evy began examining years of anger, resentment, self-criticism, and unresolved hurt. She committed herself to what she called “total forgiveness,” alongside changes in nutrition, faith, service, and the way she approached the life she still had. Her decline eventually stopped, her strength returned, and according to her account, her ALS symptoms never came back.We also look at research examining what happens physiologically when people mentally revisit an injury with anger versus forgiveness, including measurable differences in heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, autonomic activity, emotional distress, and even some markers of immune function. In this episode, you’ll discover:What forgiveness actually means—and why it does not require forgetting, excusing harm, reconciling, or abandoning boundariesHow repeatedly reliving anger and resentment can reactivate the body’s stress responseWhat studies involving serious illness have found when forgiveness is intentionally practicedWhy forgiveness may support sleep, emotional well-being, cardiovascular regulation, and a calmer internal stateA simple process for beginning to release resentment, even when part of you is not ready to forgive yetListen now to understand why forgiveness is not about letting another person off the hook, but about freeing your own body from continuously reliving the injury.Join my free email community for practical healing tools, research, survivor stories, and encouragement between episodes: https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 100. The Mindset Shift That Helps You Fight Against The Odds
What do you do when the prognosis is devastating, the obstacles keep multiplying, and part of you is beginning to wonder whether there is any point in trying? In this 100th episode of Renegade Remission, we explore the decision to keep moving toward life even when you cannot control the outcome. For such a monumental episode milestone, I decided to do something a little different, drawing lessons from the survival film The Edge. I combine this analysis with the Radical Remission story of Glam, a woman diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer and given approximately six months to live, and examine both stories to determine what changes when someone stops waiting for the worst and begins actively looking for a way forward.Glam’s determination did not make her cancer disappear on its own. It led her to seek multiple medical opinions, find doctors willing to approach her case differently, endure and adapt to difficult treatment, and support her body through nutrition, movement, meditation, yoga, and faith. Her story illustrates why mindset is not a substitute for action, but can become the force that makes action possible. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why the decision to keep going matters even when you cannot guarantee the resultHow helplessness, shame, and discouraging medical experiences can cause people to stop looking for optionsWhat research on active coping and patient participation may reveal about resilience and survivalHow to identify the specific fear or obstacle currently controlling your decisionsPractical ways to choose one next step, build a survival team, and reconnect with the part of you that is not ready to give upListen now to learn how to move from helplessness toward active participation and choose one action that carries you toward life today.Join my free email community for practical healing tools, research, survivor stories, and encouragement between episodes:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 94. Can Food Really Help You Heal?
Can changing what you eat really influence your healing journey, or is nutrition just another source of confusion after a serious diagnosis? In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore why nutrition appears so often in remarkable recovery stories as one of the most practical ways to support the body’s ability to repair, regulate, and remain resilient during illness. You’ll hear the remarkable story of Norman Arnold, who was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer and told his time was limited. As part of a broader healing approach, Norman radically changed the way he ate, pursued treatment, practiced imagery, involved his family, and became deeply engaged in his own recovery. His story shows why food so often becomes one of the first places people reclaim agency after a serious diagnosis. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why nutrition shows up so often in stories of people who heal against the oddsHow food influences inflammation, blood sugar, immune function, gut health, strength, and tissue repairWhy there is no single healing diet that works for everyoneHow to use food as support without turning nutrition into fear, perfection, or another impossible protocolHow to identify one realistic nutrition shift that may matter most for your body right nowListen now to learn how food can become part of your healing environment and how to begin making changes that feel supportive, practical, and sustainable.Join my free email community for more healing stories, research, and resources:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. When people hear stories of remarkable recovery, it can feel inspiring but also overwhelming. What do you do when you've been told there are no treatment options left? Is a terminal diagnosis truly the end of the story—or is there still room for hope?In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore one of the most difficult questions anyone facing serious illness can ask: Can the body still heal, even when doctors say it can't?Using a remarkable documented case of spontaneous remission, we examine the difference between a prognosis and a prophecy, why medicine continues to study unexpected recoveries, and what these extraordinary cases reveal about the body's capacity to surprise us. This isn't about denying medical reality or offering false hope—it's about understanding where certainty ends and possibility begins. In this episode, you'll discover:Why a medical prognosis is an estimate—not a guarantee of what will happen to youWhat documented cases of remarkable recovery reveal about the body's ability to change in unexpected waysPractical steps you can take to stay engaged in your healing journey, even when options feel limitedIf you've ever been told your condition is incurable, progressive, or terminal, this episode is a reminder that while medicine can estimate outcomes, it cannot predict every individual story. 89. The Fiber Paradox: Why More Fiber Can Make Some People Feel Worse
Some of the foods most often recommended for gut health can actually make certain people feel worse before they feel better. If you've added vegetables, beans, fermented foods, prebiotics, or other "gut-healing" foods only to end up feeling bloated, uncomfortable, foggy, or more reactive, this episode will help you understand why.In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore the surprising relationship between fiber, the microbiome, and digestive health. You'll learn why the problem often isn't that healthy foods are bad for you, but that a stressed or imbalanced gut may need a slower, more strategic approach. We break down the science of fiber fermentation, the microbiome, dysbiosis, SIBO-like patterns, motility, and why two people can eat the exact same meal and have completely different experiences. In this episode, you'll understand:Why gut-healing foods can sometimes make symptoms worse at firstHow fiber feeds the microbiome and why that process can create discomfortThe roles of dysbiosis, SIBO-like patterns, and gut motility in fiber toleranceWhy cooked, softer, and gentler fibers may be easier to tolerate than raw foodsPractical ways to rebuild fiber tolerance without unnecessary food fear or restrictionListen now to discover how supporting your gut at the right pace can help build resilience over time.📩 Join my free email community for additional research, healing stories, practical resources, and podcast updates:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 88. Why Preserving Muscle Matters So Much During Illness
If everyday tasks feel harder than they used to, standing takes more effort, stairs feel steeper, or recovery takes longer, this episode will help you understand why preserving muscle during illness matters far more than most people realize. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore why muscle is not just about movement or strength. Muscle acts as one of the body’s most important reserves, helping regulate blood sugar, store amino acids, support immune resilience, tolerate stress, recover from illness, and maintain independence. When illness, inflammation, reduced activity, low appetite, or inadequate protein begin wearing down that reserve, the effects can show up in fatigue, weakness, slower recovery, and reduced capacity. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why muscle is a metabolic organ, not just movement tissueHow muscle stores amino acids your body may need during illness, treatment, or recoveryWhy inflammation can accelerate muscle breakdownHow even small amounts of movement can help signal the body to preserve strengthPractical ways to protect muscle through protein, gentle movement, pacing, and recoveryListen now to learn why preserving muscle is one of the most important ways to protect your strength, resilience, independence, and ability to keep participating in life.Join my free email community for more healing stories, research, and resources: https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 87. Is Your Body Getting Enough Protein to Heal?
You can be eating a healthy diet and still be undernourished. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore one of the most overlooked reasons people with chronic or serious illness may feel weak, depleted, shaky, slow to recover, or like their body is not rebuilding the way it should: not getting enough protein.Protein is not just for athletes or muscle building. It provides the amino acids your body uses to make immune cells, antibodies, enzymes, neurotransmitters, connective tissue, hormones, and the raw materials needed for repair. During illness, inflammation, treatment, stress, infection, injury, or muscle loss, your need for protein may be higher than you realize. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why a “healthy” diet can still be too low in proteinHow protein supports immunity, tissue repair, blood sugar, strength, and recoveryWhy muscle is one of the body’s most important reserves during illnessHow to recognize subtle signs that you may not be getting enough proteinSimple ways to add more protein in forms your body can actually tolerateListen now to learn how much protein a healing body may need and how to begin supporting your strength, energy, and recovery one meal at a time.Join my free email community for more healing stories, research, and resources:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 86. Why Your Body Can’t Handle What It Used To (And What It’s Trying to Tell You)
Have you ever wondered why things that used to feel easy now feel impossible? A grocery trip wipes you out. A stressful phone call throws off your entire day. A supplement that should help makes you feel worse. Even small changes seem to demand more energy than you have available. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore one of the most common yet least understood experiences in chronic illness: reduced capacity and energy. We break down why the body often becomes more sensitive, reactive, and easily overwhelmed during illness, and why this doesn't mean you're weak, fragile, or failing. Instead, it often reflects a body operating under a much heavier internal load. You'll learn how inflammation, nervous system vigilance, mitochondrial dysfunction, disrupted sleep, blood sugar instability, immune activation, and chronic stress can all shrink the body's margin for handling everyday life. We also explore why even healthy interventions can sometimes feel like too much when the body is already carrying more than it can comfortably manage. In this episode, you'll understand:Why your body may no longer tolerate things that once felt easyHow chronic illness reduces your physical, emotional, and cognitive capacityThe concept of a "stress budget" and why small stressors can trigger large reactionsWhy healthy changes can sometimes backfire when the body is already overloadedPractical ways to reduce strain, protect energy, and gradually rebuild resilienceListen now to understand why your body may be reacting differently than it used to—and how working with your current capacity can become an important part of healing.📩 Join my free email community for additional research, healing stories, resources, and insights:https://TheRenegadeNutritionist.comDISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 84. The Fear of Being a Burden: Why Accepting Help Is So Hard
If you've ever needed support but struggled to ask for it, worried about burdening the people you love, or felt like you should be able to handle everything on your own, this episode will help you understand why receiving help can feel so difficult, and why learning to accept it may be one of the most important parts of healing. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore the hidden emotional and biological challenges that make support difficult to receive during illness. You'll hear the story of writer Suleika Jaouad, who describes how her leukemia diagnosis forced her to rely on others in ways she never expected, and how allowing people to help ultimately deepened her relationships rather than weakening them. From there, we examine the science of vulnerability, identity, social support, and why the fear of becoming a burden is such a common experience among people facing serious health challenges. In this episode, you'll understand:Why asking for help can feel uncomfortable even when support is availableHow illness can challenge identity and independenceWhy vulnerability often triggers fear and resistanceHow supportive relationships influence stress, resilience, and emotional well-beingPractical ways to ask for help and receive support without feeling overwhelmedListen now to discover why accepting support is not a sign of weakness—and how allowing others to help can make the journey through illness feel lighter, more connected, and less lonely.DISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 83. Why Your Body Doesn’t Heal When You’re Chronically Stressed
If you feel like you are doing everything “right” but your body still is not improving the way you hoped it would, this episode will help you understand how chronic stress changes the body in ways that can directly interfere with healing and recovery. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore what happens biologically when the body remains in a prolonged stress response and why healing becomes much harder under those conditions. You’ll hear a remarkable case in which a man with stage IV brain cancer experienced an unexpected recovery after major shifts in environment, routine, stress load, and daily structure. From there, we break down the science of how chronic stress affects the nervous system, cortisol rhythms, immune regulation, inflammation, digestion, nutrient absorption, circulation, and cellular energy production. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why chronic stress affects far more than your emotional stateHow stress changes the way the body allocates energy and resourcesWhy inflammation, fatigue, and nervous system overload often appear togetherHow chronic stress can interfere with digestion, nutrient absorption, and repairSimple ways to begin creating more biological signals of safety and regulationListen now to understand why stress can become one of the biggest hidden barriers to healing and what helps the body begin shifting out of that state over time.DISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 82. The Truth About Supplements: What Helps, What Doesn’t, and What Matters Most
If you’ve spent money on supplements, tried all the “right” things, and still wondered why your body is not responding the way you hoped it would, this episode will help you understand what supplements can realistically do, and what actually determines whether they help.In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore how supplements work biologically, why some people experience major improvements while others feel no difference at all, and why the answer often has less to do with the supplement itself than the condition of the systems it’s entering into. Using Dr. Bruce Ames’ influential Triage Theory as a foundation, we unpack how even mild nutrient insufficiencies can affect energy production, inflammation, immune regulation, mitochondrial function, and long-term repair processes throughout the body. From there, we break down the deeper science of supplementation, including nutrient bottlenecks, absorption issues, gut health, nutrient interdependence, and why more supplements do not necessarily lead to better outcomes. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why supplements sometimes help dramatically, and other times do very littleHow nutrient deficiencies can create hidden bottlenecks in the bodyWhy absorption and gut health matter just as much as what you takeThe difference between isolated nutrients and whole-food-based supplementationHow to approach supplements more strategically and less reactivelyListen now to understand what actually makes supplements effective—and how to support your body in a way that is more targeted, balanced, and biologically grounded.DISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 81. Five Choices that Change the Course of Illness
If you’ve been wondering why some people seem to experience major shifts in their health while others stay stuck in the same cycle for years, this episode explores five decisions that repeatedly appear in stories of remission, recovery, and unexpected improvement. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we look at the turning points that often happen before symptoms improve. Across documented recovery stories, meaningful change rarely begins with one dramatic intervention. More often, it starts when people begin changing the conditions their bodies are operating within; reducing chronic stress, reevaluating environments and routines, supporting the body more consistently, and staying engaged long enough for biology to respond. From there, we break down the science behind why these decisions matter biologically, including how chronic stress affects inflammation and hormone signaling, how the nervous system influences repair processes, and why repeated daily inputs shape long-term health more than isolated actions ever could. In this episode, you’ll understand:The five decisions that repeatedly appear in stories of healing and recoveryWhy change often begins long before symptoms improveHow stress, environment, and daily habits directly influence biologyWhy consistency matters more than intensity when supporting healingHow to begin identifying the patterns that may be helping—or straining—your bodyListen now to understand why healing often begins with a change in direction, and how small, repeated decisions can gradually reshape the conditions your body responds to.DISCLAIMERThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice. 59. Your Diagnosis Is Information, Not Destiny: Here's What Actually Shapes Your Outcome
If you’ve been told your diagnosis determines what happens next, this episode will help you understand what actually shapes outcomes, and where your biology may still be more responsive than you’ve been led to believe. In this episode of Renegade Remission, we explore the difference between a medical label and living, adaptive biology. You’ll hear a real survival story from someone who chose to see his diagnosis as information rather than identity — and whose long-term outcome extended well beyond expected statistics. From there, we break down what diagnoses measure, what prognosis models actually predict, and what they cannot account for.We look at how internal terrain - including inflammation, metabolic health, nervous system regulation, immune balance, and environmental load - influences how disease behaves over time. And we explore why two people with the same diagnosis can follow dramatically different trajectories. In this episode, you’ll understand:Why a diagnosis describes a current state, not your full adaptive capacityHow internal biology — not labels alone — shapes disease behaviorWhat prognosis statistics are based on, and what variables they cannot captureWhy biology remains dynamic even during serious illnessHow to shift your focus toward factors that meaningfully influence resilienceInstead of feeling defined by a label, you’ll begin to see where your energy can be directed more strategically.Listen now to understand what your diagnosis can and cannot predict, and identify one area of your internal environment you can begin supporting this week.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and does not offer medical advice.
