At the end of the day, the reality is quite different. We are opening up space for hope, healing, and exploration of what a transformation relationship with Christ may look like. In this episode, we hear from Jason Storbakken, Chapel Director for the Bowery Mission in NYC, and Water Street’s own Director of Spiritual Care, Jeff McLain, as they discuss the ins and outs of how they help those coming off the streets find their way to God and in turn find who they were really mean to be.

How Does Physical Health Impact Homelessness?
It's clear that physical health and homelessness are linked, but how exactly do they interact? For many, a bad accident or injury can catapult someone into a world of homelessness, and for others, dealing with ongoing poverty and lack of resources can lead to declining health problems. Many tend to focus on symptoms like addiction and recovery, but in fact, more and more homeless neighbors are dealing with a variety of chronic illnesses like diabetes. No matter what, caring for someone's physical health needs is a key part of helping them work their way out of homelessness. In today's episode, Jack Crowley, President of Water Street Mission sits down with Chip Mershon of Penn State Health Cornerstone and our own Jean Benedict, Director of Medical Services and Nurse Care Management at Water Street Health Services to discuss why physical health is so key, and how to support guests in this way.

What Are the Root Causes of Homelessness?
What can lead people to be on the street varies from person to person. It can be as personal as a lack of relational equity or encountering a major health event, or it could be more systemic, such as the inability to find affordable housing or clear an eviction record. In this episode, we'll explore those roots and others, and uncover how they lead someone to be on the street. We'll also introduce you to our Whole Person Model, which aims to give those facing poverty and homelessness individualized tools to move out of their current situation and find sustainable restoration. This means not just having the ability to keep a place to live, but the healing of the entire individual, mind, body, and soul, so they can begin to thrive in all areas of life and eventually become a restorer of others. Rick Rutter, Pastor of Crossroads Mennonite Church in Lancaster City, and Colleen Adams, Water Street's VP of Health Services, join us for the conversation.

Rethinking Emergency Shelter
Typically emergency shelter consists of inviting someone in during the afternoon, giving them a place to stay and a meal, and then releasing them back on the streets the following morning. We examine this model and how some missions, including ours, are changing to create greater healing and restoration among emergency shelter guests by creating pathways into residential programs (also referred to as res). We'll also look into how collaboration and choice can become powerful mechanisms for life change as someone comes out of homelessness. Jim Reese, President and CEO of Atlanta Mission, and Luis Rodriguez, Water Street’s Assistant VP of Programs, join us for this profound conversation.
