Why would God bring such catastrophic judgment on the world? When will the real end of the world come? In Luke 17:20-37, Jesus addresses our natural longing to know when He'll return by teaching that the kingdom of God isn't something we can pinpoint on a calendar—it's already breaking into our world through His presence among us. We live in the tension of the "now and not yet," recognizing His kingdom is already at work while awaiting that final day when Christ will return as suddenly as the flood came in Noah's time or fire fell on Sodom in Lot's day.This uncertainty makes us vulnerable to false teachers who claim special revelation about his coming, which is why we must guard our hearts against deception and stay anchored in Scripture. Why do we struggle to forgive when someone has deeply hurt us? In Luke 17, Jesus addresses the heart of human conflict and our call to radical forgiveness. Why do good people suffer while the wicked seem to prosper? This age-old question finds its answer in Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. Here we see a wealthy man who lived in luxury while ignoring the suffering beggar at his gate, and after death, their eternal destinies were dramatically reversed. The rich man found himself in torment while Lazarus was comforted in Abraham's bosom, revealing that earthly success means nothing if we neglect our souls and the needs of others.Death serves as the great equalizer that strips away all worldly advantages and exposes the true condition of our hearts before God. Have you felt that twinge of resentment when someone who "doesn't deserve it" receives grace and mercy? In Luke 15:1-32, Jesus tells three powerful stories about things that were lost: a sheep, a coin, and most famously, a son. While we often focus on the wayward son's journey home, there's another character we need to watch out for in our own hearts - the older brother who couldn't celebrate his sibling's return.The prodigal son's story shows us the beautiful transformation that happens through humility. He began with "give me my inheritance" - demanding what he thought he deserved. But his journey back required a complete change of heart: "make me like one of your hired servants." Unlike the lamb and the coin, he had to choose to be found. Meanwhile, the older brother stood outside the celebration, unwilling to join in because he was trapped in comparison, entitlement, and judgment.
