Cornelius was devout... but he was not saved. It must have taken courage for the Roman Centurion to abandon the numerous gods of his nation. He became devoted to the one true God. If anyone could have claimed righteousness by his own merits, it was Cornelius. But he needed to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus, like everyone else. It was a stretch for Peter to even enter his home, but what happened in that living room changed the world. Preaching to Gentiles - is that even kosher?! The kosher dietary laws became a symbol for something much more important, in Acts 10. That's where Peter gets that vision of a sheet lowered from heaven, full of unclean animals. He learned that "clean" and "unclean" is a distinction that God can un-make. Death will change your life! Maybe Paul wasn't actually dead when he got his glimpse of the next world: "in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows," he wrote. But some kind of switch was flipped for Paul, and Peter, and Stephen, in the worst crises of their lives. If you go to Hell, it will be over Jesus' dead body. I hope my opening didn't sound irreverent. What I mean is that Jesus died to keep you out of Hell. What do we mean when we talk about "the last judgment?" We saw in our previous excursion into the book of Revelation that we can get a bit sloppy about what we call "Heaven." What happens before the Last Days? Any study of Revelation takes us forward into the future, all the way out to the end of Gentile history. If Jesus' sacrifice made the Old Covenant offerings obsolete, why build another Jewish Temple? When you hear these trumpets, it's too late! We get the sense, reading Revelation, that God isn't commanding new judgments to fall on the Earth; we don't hear Him pronouncing them. Instead, the punishment for man's rebellion has been "stored up," and is now being released, in stages. What we do today, matters. If we know for sure that we are saved by grace through faith apart from our works, then we own a priceless truth. But the devil can still use that truth against us! John's task is to describe the indescribable God! "No one has seen God at any time," John wrote. But... John saw something, just as Ezekiel had seen a Being on the throne.
