Montecito Bank & Trust Fraud Specialist reports that one of their customers was taken in by a complicated scam. It started as the familiar Tech Support Scam. The victim believes she is speaking to Microsoft Tech Support. She is told her identity has been compromised and that she needs to take out $25,000, which she eventually was able to do. She meets a courier and gives the crook her money. She also has money at an investment brokerage. She followed the scammers directive and withdrew more cash- before handing it over to the crooks.

This week, Scam Squad has a special Scam Fighter guest who has brilliant ideas for very unique and very promising anti-scam prevention methods. This type of prevention is the best hope against A.I. scams.

Fraudsters are luring customers into verifying their debit card and social security number and then running up fraudulant charges. Gift card scams and romance scams are also still taking place and Montecito Bank & Trust issued another warning.

The latest ICE report revealed that the number one complaint had to do with phishing or spoofing. The number of complaints was up almot 40% and the dollar losses were up almost 60%. The number one scam reported had to do with phishing and spoofing, number two was tech support scams.

The final scam is an impersonation scam where the scammer pretends to be the famous actor Bfad Pitt and amazingly able to defraud the victim out of $850,000.00 their entire life's savings and condemning the victim to die alone in poverty.

This week Scam Squad reviews the new twists in old scams such as the Warrant Scam where you get a phone call or message saying that you owe money for a ticket or a fine. Also Scam Squad warns us about phony calls saying it's time to renew your cable, internet, wi-fi, or phone, or other contract and that you contract is about to expire and you will be fined a huge amount of money if you allow it to expire. The last scam is a bank account scam where they try to get you to withdraw cash and wait at home for a courier to come and pickup. These scams are happing now all over the USA.
