Scenic Route through Midlife — Society, Self & Shifting Gears
by Jennifer Walter
We think deeply, feel a lot, and we're done pretending mental load, exhaustion and burnout are personal failures. This is Scenic Route through Midlife, a mental health and personal growth podcast for women navigating burnout, rage, and perimenopause while still making space for wonder and whimsy.Hosted by sociologist and mental health advocate Jennifer Walter — a half-rebel, half-marshmallow perimenopausal millennial with ADHD — we explore where society meets the self: perfectionism, overthinking, and the pursuit of well-being collide with power, gender, capitalism, and social change. Here we believe healing isn't just personal, it's collective.New episodes every Tuesday.New affirmations every Friday. The longest way round is the shortest way home. That’s why we’re taking the Scenic Route.

Weekly Affirmation — Like Attracts Like
This is your Friday affirmation. Take a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's affirmation is for the woman who has been asking for something — quietly, persistently, longer than she'd like to admit — and is starting to wonder why it hasn't arrived yet.Today's affirmation: "What I've been calling in recognises me because I recognise myself."This week's episode with Bronx Witch Aly Kravetz cracked something open for me. Spellwork, she says, isn't primarily about what you do externally. It's about whether your internal energy matches what you're calling in. Like attracts like. If the energy isn't aligned, what you're asking for has nowhere to land. The question worth sitting with this weekend: do you recognise yourself as someone who belongs in the life you've been asking for?Save. Spellwork 101: The Question That Changed Everything with Aly Kravetz (Bronx Witch)
Are you happy? It sounds simple. But for Aly Kravetz — Bronx-born witch, tarot reader, Reiki practitioner and spiritual entrepreneur — that three-word question from her mum became the pivot point for everything: leaving law school, ending a marriage, and building something entirely her own from the ground up during a pandemic. In this episode of The Scenic Route, Aly breaks down Spellwork 101 in a way that makes complete sense even if you've never touched a crystal in your life. Because spellwork isn't woo for the sake of woo. It's energy work. It's science. It's homeostasis with better candles. In this episode, we talk about:Why spellwork starts on the inside and falls flat if you skip that partThe difference between spells (external) and inner work (non-negotiable)How Aly used ritual to navigate divorce, find self-love and rebuild her lifeWhy your nightly shower is already a cleansing ritual — no crystals requiredWhat gratitude actually has to do with happiness (and why they're not the same thing)How to start a spiritual practice when you don't know where to beginThis one is for you if you're somewhere in the middle of your life, wondering, is this it? and you're open to trying something you haven't tried yet.About Aly Kravetz:Aly Kravetz, aka BronxWitch, is the founder of WitchWork — the only co-working office space in NYC dedicated to spiritual and wellness practitioners — and BetterWitch Coaching, a class and coaching platform covering magic, spirituality and entrepreneurship. Weekly Affirmation – Rest is not the reward
This is your Friday affirmation. Let's pause for a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's Soft Landings affirmation is for the woman who's been spring-cleaning everything except her exhaustion.Today's affirmation: "My body knows what's good for me."Every Spring, you're told to declutter your wardrobe, your habits, your goals, your mindset, and if you don't feel the urge, something's wrong with you. Spring Cleaning Culture: Why Mud Season Is Good Enough
Every spring, you're told to declutter your wardrobe, your goals, your relationships, and your mindset. And if you don't feel the urge? There's a low hum of guilt that says something's wrong with you. This week on The Scenic Route, we're asking: what if that impulse isn't wisdom, and who actually benefits from the story that your whole life needs a seasonal audit? For many women in midlife, spring-cleaning pressure hits differently. You're already navigating a season of your own — one that doesn't come with a tidy checklist. The last thing you need is Instagram telling you to declutter your chakras, too.We trace spring cleaning back to its roots — sacred, communal rituals in traditions around the globe — and follow how it was stripped of that context to become a personal productivity obligation. We look at who the "spring-clean your life" message lands on most heavily (and why that's not a coincidence). And we get into how self-care went from a radical political act — rooted in the work of Audre Lorde — to "buy this candle."Plus: what my body is actually doing in spring and why the in-between, messy, not-yet-blooming feeling might not be a problem to fix. You'll come away with: A reframe on why you feel behind every springThe cultural and gendered history behind domestic "renewal" pressureOne small invitation to try spring subtracting insteadIf this made you see spring cleaning differently, share it with someone who needs permission to not optimise their way through spring.References mentioned:Audre Lorde, A Burst of Light (1988)Inna Michaeli, "Self-Care: An Act of Political Warfare or a Neoliberal Trap?" Weekly Affirmation – Self-Compassion
It's Friday. Pause for a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's Soft Landings affirmation is for the woman who keeps mistaking her patterns for her personality. For every midlife woman who's been fighting the thing she does instead of getting curious about why she does it.Today's Affirmation: "My patterns kept me safe. I get to thank them and want something different."The thing you keep doing – the overfunctioning, the over-explaining, the keeping yourself small, the white-knuckling your independence, whatever yours is – it wasn't a mistake. It was a solution. A really smart one, for circumstances that once required exactly that response. It kept you safe. It kept you steady. It did its job.The problem isn't that you're broken. The problem is that the pattern is still running the same programme for a situation that no longer exists. Like a smoke alarm going off because you forgot your bagel in the toaster. So today, instead of fighting it or shaming it or trying to think your way out of it – what if you just said thank you? Thank you for protecting me when I needed protecting. I'm okay now. You can rest. You don't have to dismantle a pattern to be free of it. Sometimes you just need to stop treating it like an enemy and start treating it like a part of you that was doing its best with what it had. That's not giving up. That's actually where the shift begins.Save. Share. Come back when you need the reminder. 🤍CRAVING A SOFTER LIFE? Soft is my monthly newsletter. Breaking Patterns in Midlife: Why Knowing Better Isn't Enough
You've done the therapy. You've journalled. You can explain your patterns with real precision — where they came from, what they're protecting, why they formed. And yet. There you are. Doing it again. This episode is about the gap between knowing something and actually being free of it. Insight is a beginning. It's not the destination. And once you really accept that — not as a defeat, but as genuinely useful information — it completely changes where you look. What we cover:Why self-awareness isn't the destination (and what is)The intention-behaviour gap — why 75% of behaviour change has nothing to do with conscious thoughtWhere patterns actually live in the brain and bodyThe verbal mind's blind spot — and why you literally cannot see it from inside your own headWhat actually reaches the parts that words can'tThis one is for you if you're in midlife, you've done serious inner work, and something still feels stuck. You haven't failed. You've just hit the ceiling of one particular approach.WORK WITH ME:→ Colour Signature (€37): jenniferwalter.me/aura-soma-colour-signatureThe Scenic Route — weekly episodes on midlife transitions, burnout, and mental health. Weekly Affirmation – Self-Worth
It's Friday. Pause for a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's Soft Landings affirmation is for the woman who's tired of measuring herself against someone else's yardstick. For midlife women exhausted from the endless performance of worth.Today's Affirmation:"I release the belief that my worth is defined by what I've been taught to buy, do, or become."You don't need the right house, the right body, the right title to matter. You don't need to achieve enough, accumulate enough, or transform enough to be worthy.Your worth isn't a product. It isn't a performance. It isn't a before-and-after photo. This weekly self-worth affirmation for women in midlife is a gentle reminder: you're already whole. Worthy without the purchase. Worthy without the productivity. Worthy without the perfect transformation. What would it feel like to stop chasing someone else's definition of enough? Not because you've proven anything. Not because you've earned the right. What Is Propaganda? How It Works & Why You Can't See It
You've been propagandised today. Probably in the last hour. And I'm not talking about political ads or conspiracy theories—I'm talking about ideas that feel so obvious, so natural, so true that you'd never think to question them.In this episode, we explore what propaganda actually is, how it works in modern society, and why the most effective propaganda doesn't look like propaganda at all. Here's what surprised me most while researching this episode:The best propaganda isn't loud. It's not flashy. It's quiet, repetitive, and boring. It blends into the background until you forget there were other ways to think. And the language we use every day, from news headlines to social media, is doing more work than you realise. We dive into:Why billionaires buy newspapers (and what that has to do with your morning coffee routine)Why does how we talk about certain things matter more than you thinkHow "both sides" became propaganda itselfA trend you've definitely seen on social media that's actually a masterclass in normalisationThe question that changes everything: not whether you're influenced, but whether you're awareYou'll hear from: Jacques Ellul, Antonio Gramsci, Stuart Hall, Michel Foucault, and Paulo Freire, but don't worry, I make it actually interesting.Fair warning: Once you hear this, you'll start seeing propaganda everywhere. Your social media feed. Your work culture. Maybe even in this very podcast description. There's no going back.Listen, if you've ever wondered:Why certain ideas feel "obviously true"How the media shapes what we think is normalWhat makes something "extreme" vs. "reasonable"Whether you can actually think for yourself (spoiler: it's complicated)See you on the Scenic Route!Send me a DMSupport the show_____________________________________________________________________🔮 DAILY DOSE OF WOO The free Scenic Route Affirmation Card Deck is your online invitation to trust your inner voice again. ADHD Superpower? Gifts, Capitalism, and Who Really Benefits
"Everyone has ADHD now."You've heard it. Maybe someone said it to you — with a half-joke, half-accusation edge. Like, neurodivergence is just the trend of the season. But what if that reaction tells us less about ADHD and more about the systems we're living in?In this conversation with Kristina Kyser — psychotherapist, educator, and creator of the Neurodivergent Rising course — we pull apart the "ADHD superpower" narrative that's everywhere right now. Because yes, there are gifts: innovation, nonlinear thinking, deep passion, hyperfocus. Those are real. But who benefits when we only talk about the parts of capitalism that it can extract? What We Cover:ADHD masking: the invisible labour of appearing "normal" From childhood, neurodivergent people — especially women — calibrate to a world that says: you're too much, you're wrong, you're different. Kristina breaks down what masking costs and why perimenopause often unmasks ADHD in midlife. The construction of "sanity" and who it was built to serve Normalcy isn't neutral. The DSM, psychiatry, the witch burnings — all of it is tangled with patriarchy, colonialism, and capitalism's need for compliant workers. Kristina traces the historical roots of how neurodivergence gets pathologised. The superpower question: what's true, what's missing, who profits Yes, ADHD comes with strengths. But when we only celebrate the traits capitalism values (innovation! hyperfocus! productivity!) while erasing the lows, the burnout, the 13-year shorter life expectancy, the systemic barriers — who does that serve? Why ADHD is a disability under capitalism — and that's not your fault ADHD isn't a medical deficit. But in a society built for neurotypical brains, it is disabling. Kristina explains the difference between individual healing and systemic change, and why we need both.Meet Kristina Kyser:Kristina (she/her) is a late-diagnosed AuDHD educator, former psychotherapist, and course creator with a PhD in English Literature and over 13 years of clinical experience. Her work bridges trauma healing, animist practice, and systems-level critique. You Can't Even Pick What You Want for Lunch. Let's Talk About That feat. Jillian Reilly
Here's the thing nobody tells you: the way you order at a restaurant says A LOT about how you move through life. Are you the person who waits to hear what everyone else is getting before you decide? Do you need everyone's opinion before you can choose? Are you picking what you want, and it feels weirdly vulnerable?Yeah. We need to talk.In this episode, I sit down with Jillian Reilly, author of Ten Permissions: How to Stop Waiting and Start Living, to talk about why so many of us can't make the smallest choices for ourselves, and what that says about the bigger life we're (not) living. We dig into:Why approval-seeking starts at lunch and ends with your whole identityThe terror of wanting something no one else validatesHow to build choice-making muscles before you blow up your lifeWhy pleasure isn't selfish (and might be the most strategic thing you can practice)What happens when the old rules stop working, and there's no new manualThis conversation is for the overthinkers, the people-pleasers, the ones who've spent decades being "good" and are now sitting in the rubble of what that actually got them.About Jillian ReillyJillian Reilly is a founder, author, and keynote speaker. When Everything Feels Too Much: One Small Change Still Matters
There's a particular moment many of us know well — when everything feels like too much. Not dramatically, but quietly, heavily, relentlessly. You're still functioning, still showing up, but inside, something is fraying. And the most painful part? The story you tell yourself about it: I should be able to handle this.In this episode, we explore why overwhelm isn't a personal failure — it's a predictable outcome when multiple vulnerabilities align. Using insights from the Swiss Cheese Model and Paul Gilbert's three emotional systems, we unpack why your nervous system can't "just cope" when recovery is structurally unavailable. This isn't about becoming stronger. It's about understanding why one small change can still matter — even when everything feels impossible. We'll explore:Why overwhelm is rarely about one thing — it's an accumulation of pressures that alignHow the Swiss Cheese Model explains why burnout happens when recovery becomes impossibleThe three emotional systems (Threat, Drive, and Soothing) and why modern life keeps two constantly activatedWhy your nervous system needs recovery cycles, not just more willpowerHow one small change can close one vulnerability — and why that mattersWhy resistance to small changes is often a sign of how depleted you areSend me a DMSupport the show_____________________________________________________________________🔮 DAILY DOSE OF WOO The free Scenic Route Affirmation Card Deck is your online invitation to trust your inner voice again. Why “Getting Your Life Together” Might Be Making You Less Resilient
The Words You Need to Hear When Perfectionism Is Running Your LifeEver find yourself thinking: “I should be further along by now”? Our society is so OBSESSED with finishing things… what if strength lives in what’s still taking shape?I’ve been taking an adult learning programme on resilience at my old university, University College Cork, and spending more time in my friend Juli’s clay studio. There, I noticed: the clay pieces I tried to make perfect felt lifeless. The ones with flaws felt alive. This naturally led me back into the world of Wabi‑sabi — the Japanese aesthetic of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness — and how it mirrors resilience. In this episode, I walk you through:The cultural myth of “completion” and why we still chase itHow wabi-sabi challenges that mythWhat resilience really is — and how it shows up in softness not hardnessA short practice you can use this week to lean into being unfinishedIf you felt even a flicker of recognition in this episode, share it with someone who might need a reminder that perfection isn’t the point — being alive is. Together, they explore how shame isn’t just a feeling — it’s a learned survival strategy. Freedom Inside the Edges: How to Build a Life That Holds You
What if freedom isn’t the absence of limits, but the presence of form?In this episode of The Scenic Route, Jen explores the paradox of constraints – why the boundaries we resist might be the very thing that saves us. ABOUT THIS SHOW
We think deeply, feel a lot, and we're done pretending mental load, exhaustion and burnout are personal failures.
