    Pursue Hospitality – Romans 12v9–13

Well, it’d be really good if you could open up a Bible to Romans chapter 12, and if you’re using one of the Red Church Bibles, it’s on page 1 1 3 9. So Romans 12, and we’re going to read from verse 9 to verse 13. Romans 12 verse 9 to 13. Love must be sincere. (0:29 – 0:36) Hate what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. (0:38 – 0:54) Honour […] The post Pursue Hospitality – Romans 12v9–13 appeared first on Greenview Church.

The Heart of Worship – 1 Chronicles 15v25–16v43

Evening folks, if you’ve got your Bible handy, it’d be great to turn to 1 Chronicles chapter 15 and you’ll find that in the church Bibles on page 418. I’m going to split our Bible reading tonight. We’re going to read from verse 25 of chapter 15 down to verse 4 of chapter 16 and then we’ll read the Psalm that takes up most of chapter 16 a little bit later. Let’s hear God’s word, chapter 15, verse 25. So […] The post The Heart of Worship – 1 Chronicles 15v25–16v43 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Table of Disruptive Grace – Luke 19v1–10

Luke’s Gospel, chapter 19. And if you’re using one of the church Bibles, it’s page 1,053. Luke 19, and we’re going to read the first 10 verses. (0:22 – 0:35) Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. (0:36 – 1:03) He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short, he could not see over the crowd. The Chosen King – 1 Chronicles Ch11

Thanks, Colin. Evening, folks. If you’ve got your Bible to hand, let’s turn to 1 Chronicles chapter 11, and you’ll find that in the Church Bible on page 414. Let’s hear God’s words. All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. (0:37 – 1:03) And the Lord your God said to you, […] The post The Chosen King – 1 Chronicles Ch11 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Welcome the Stranger – Leviticus 19v33–34

Though maybe our views are correct, technically it was perhaps a little small. He helped us really to consider that hospitality is a much bigger idea in the Bible than we might ordinarily think. Maybe it was new to us last week that the Bible shows us that God himself is hospitable. (0:22 – 0:44) But there’s another word that we also may not associate with this word hospitality, and that is the word stranger. And this week we want […] The post Welcome the Stranger – Leviticus 19v33–34 appeared first on Greenview Church.

The King God Rejected – 1 Chronicles ch10

I met a man some time ago who works for a Christian ministry in London, maybe you’ve heard of it, it’s called Christian Heritage, and this guy, his name is Ben, and he spends his time leading walking tours around London. And he takes people round London and he explains the city from the perspective of the Christian history of London. And he said that in recent years, he’s seen several people come to faith in Jesus, not only from […] The post The King God Rejected – 1 Chronicles ch10 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Free Food and Drink – Isaiah 55v1–9

I’m going to say a word and I want you to think about the first thing that comes to mind. Hospitality. What image, what idea is the first thing that pops into your head when someone says hospitality? I would be surprised if some of you weren’t thinking about food or things related to food. Kitchens, aprons, things like that. Connected to that, if you Google the word hospitality, what first of all pops up of course is the hospitality […] The post Free Food and Drink – Isaiah 55v1–9 appeared first on Greenview Church.

    Hope’s Heritage – 1 Chronicles ch1–9

I was chatting the other week to a pastor from another church and he asked me what we were preaching on at Greenview and I said, we’re about to start the book of First Chronicles. His eyebrow rose pretty quickly. He said, First Chronicles, the book where Bible reading plans go to die. It wasn’t the most encouraging comment, but I guess pretty accurate. Many a Bible reader has run aground on the book of First Chronicles. I say book […] The post Hope’s Heritage – 1 Chronicles ch1–9 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Knowing the Love of Christ – Ephesians 3V14–21

Father, we pray that you would speak, O Lord, in your Word today, that you would give us minds and hearts that are ready to understand and engage, that you would open us up to hear what you have to say, Lord, and that you would speak so clearly through your Word to our lives. We pray this in your name. Amen. (0:21 – 0:43) Well, it’s good to be back. Forgiven and Restored – John 21v15–25

Open with me to John’s Gospel and chapter 21. John 21, reading from verse 15. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. (0:26 – 0:41) Jesus said, feed my lambs. Again, Jesus said, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He answered, yes, Lord, you know that I love you. The Glory of the City – Psalm 48

Tonight we’re looking at Psalm 48, which can be found on page 571 of the Chapel Bibles, and I’ll start by reading this. Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, like the heights of Zaphon, is Mount Zion, the city of the great king. God is in her citadels. He has shown himself to be her fortress. Loving Jesus – Luke 7v36–50

Luke 7, verse 36. When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her […] The post Loving Jesus – Luke 7v36–50 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Well, if you have your Bibles, then please turn to Psalm 46, and let’s read together. For the director of music of the sons of Korah, according to the Alamoth, a song. God is our refuge and strength and ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Learning to Fish with Jesus – John 21v1–14

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book, but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Afterwards, Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, also known as Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two […] The post Learning to Fish with Jesus – John 21v1–14 appeared first on Greenview Church.

How Much is the Church Worth – Psalm 45

Over the next three weeks, we’re going to study a trio of Psalms. But before we look at the first one, let me ask you a question. What would you say is the most valuable thing on Earth? Out of all that exists on this big blue planet, what is the most precious thing of all? I guess you could give different answers to that question. Close Encounters of the Risen Kind – John 20v11–31

Well, good morning everyone. It’s been a long haul to here in John’s Gospel. This is our 47th sermon in the series. Thank you for staying with it. Here, after this long climb in chapter 20, we reach the summit. Now, you may say, well, surely we reached the summit last week, David. (0:24 – 0:36) Surely the resurrection has to be the summit of John’s Gospel. But actually, this is the summit. From Buried to Believing – John 19v38–20v10

As I was preparing this sermon, I happened to spot a headline in the newspaper. The title of the headline was, Britain is Quietly Awakening to Full Fat Supernatural Christianity. David Frost, the writer of the article, said that, Britons in growing numbers are returning to church, are being drawn to Christianity again, but they are not interested at all in the skinny, light version. (0:39 – 1:05) They’re wanting the full fat, supernatural version of Christianity, and they’re going […] The post From Buried to Believing – John 19v38–20v10 appeared first on Greenview Church.

It is Finished – John 19v28–37

First of all, how we must understand it, the work of God is finished. John’s account of the crucifixion is strikingly brief. It’s only 27 verses from the crucifixion to the burial. Just a few significant scenes, just a few stopping points on the way to Jesus’ death. There’s a sign that was placed above the cross. There’s the dividing of Jesus’ clothes and the gambling of a garment. There’s a lovely conversation between Jesus and his mother. But that […] The post It is Finished – John 19v28–37 appeared first on Greenview Church.

    A Framework for Forgiveness – Matthew 5v1–12

Well, good evening, everyone, and thank you for being here and seeing the Forgiveness Series through to the end. It’s been a long journey. And this evening, what I want to do is to try to pull together some of the hanging threads of that series, and maybe address some of the questions that have come up, certainly our community group, and as I’ve asked around, in some others too. Crucified – John 19v16–27

It would be good if you could open your Bible again to John’s Gospel and chapter 19, and it’s on page 1088 if you’re using the church Bible. The death of Jesus Christ was clearly a painful death, but it was also, as we read the scriptures, a purposeful death. Death from a human perspective often feels passive, pointless, purposeless. (0:37 – 2:05) Many would agree with Macbeth, under the influence of Shakespeare’s pen, who said, life’s but a walking […] The post Crucified – John 19v16–27 appeared first on Greenview Church.

What if I Still Feel Hurt – Psalm 55, 23

But here’s the reality, even as people move towards a forgiveness, hurt often remains. And we’re thinking about sins done against us. We’ve been encouraging a practise, a culture of forgiveness whereby our love covers over many sins, yet even in forgiving those sins we absorb a cost, a debt that is costly, and that can have ongoing hurt and pain. (0:36 – 4:46) We’ve also said that some sins are such that they require confrontation, maybe some require civil […] The post What if I Still Feel Hurt – Psalm 55, 23 appeared first on Greenview Church.

The Unrecognised King – John 19v1–16

Well open your Bible again to John’s Gospel and chapter 19 and the first 16 verses. These are verses in which I think it’s fair to say the walls are closing in on Jesus as John’s Gospel builds to its climax, as Jesus’ death approaches, as Calvary’s hill draws nearer. The intensity of the narrative reflects this moment. As we read John 19, the tone of it is serious, the dialogue is dramatic, and the emotion is felt. And at […] The post The Unrecognised King – John 19v1–16 appeared first on Greenview Church.

No conditions? No consequences? – Matthew 6v9–15

Good evening, everyone. Let’s open God’s word to Matthew’s gospel and chapter six, Matthew six. And if you’re using the Pew Bible, it’s page 970. (0:21 – 0:42) This is one of the places where the Lord’s prayer is found. Though really, it would be better to call it the disciples’ prayer, because this is what disciples should pray. And a feature of their praying, of our praying as disciples, is forgiveness. (0:43 – 1:02) Asking for forgiveness under the […] The post No conditions? What is Truth? – John 18v28–40

Good morning. Last week Colin mentioned an iconic line from a movie. The movie was A Few Good Men. Tom Cruise is the lead actor but the movie is dominated by Jack Nicholson who is only in three scenes in the whole movie. Military lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Caffey played by Tom Cruise shouts, I want the truth at Colonel Nathan Jessop played by Jack Nicholson who has taken a stand in the military courtroom and is being interrogated. When Believers just can’t agree – Acts 15v39–40

Evening folks, good to be with you as we continue on in our series on forgiveness. Before we get into tonight’s message, I just wanted to put a little addendum on to my previous message. I was speaking two weeks ago and if you were here or you’ve seen it online, you’ll know the subject was on justice. Can there still be justice? And at the end of that message, I read an extract from a book called Betrayal about […] The post When Believers just can’t agree – Acts 15v39–40 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Failure and Faithfulness – John 18v15–27

As I begin this sermon, let me just say a brief word of thanks. It has been a hard few weeks for us as a family, to say the least, but your prayers and your words and your acts of kindness have meant a great deal to us and probably more than you know. With that said, let’s pray together. But let me pray before we open up this passage together. Almighty God and Father, we thank you and we praise you that you have spoken. We thank you that you have revealed yourself and your plan to us clearly. We thank you that we have access to your word and through it we can learn how to live for you. Is There Still Room For Justice – Romans 12v17–21

Evening folks, good to be with you. If you’ve got your Bible handy, it’d be great to have that open at Romans chapter 12. We’re going to read from God’s words as our introduction to this subject, ‘Is there’s still room for justice’ as we think about the wider subject of forgiveness. (0:21 – 0:37) So let’s hear God’s word together, Romans chapter 12, starting at verse 17. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Verse 15 If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. Jesus Prays for us all – John 17v6–19

Well, good morning and welcome to our latest discussion in John chapter 17. Jesus prays for us all. Remember when you were a child and you dropped a stone into a calm pond? That fascination as you watched the ripples spread out from that central point, right to the edge of the pond or the puddle. Well, Jesus’ prayer here in John 17 is structured a bit like that. It’s a series of three concentric circles or ripples, if you […] The post Jesus Prays for us all – John 17v6–19 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Safe and Sent – John 17v6–19

Last Sunday on the 25th of January, Alec Honnold did something remarkable. Not only did he climb Taipei 101, which is one of the world’s tallest buildings at 1,600 feet from the earth, but he scaled it without any ropes or without any safety net, and he did so live on Netflix. If you watched it or watched a clip of it, then probably like me, you watched it through your fingers. The Glory of Overlooking – Proverbs 10v12

It’s the third sermon in our series on forgiveness, and on these last two Sundays, we’ve laid out two basic ideas. Number one, that God forgives, God forgives. And then number two, building on that, that forgiven people should forgive. As a necessary consequence of being forgiven, God’s forgiven people should forgive others’ sins. Jesus was very clear on this in that parable that packed such a punch. The servant who owed 10,000 bags of gold, a debt almost incalculable, […] The post The Glory of Overlooking – Proverbs 10v12 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Jesus Prays for Himself – John 17v1–5

Morning folks, good to be with you this morning. In a world of social media posts and AI editing, where people can manage their image so that the versions of themselves that others see can be very carefully stage managed, where can you go if you want to see and get an insight into what somebody is really like? Forgiven People Forgive – Matthew 18v21–35

Thank you David for opening up and welcoming us all to this evening. So last week we began where the Bible insists we must always begin, not with what we do but with what God has done. And last week we established the source of forgiveness, God’s gracious heart towards sinners. But tonight we want to press on to the implication for God’s people. Forgiven people, forgive. What I want to call the Gospel Echo. (0:37 – 2:26) Now there […] The post Forgiven People Forgive – Matthew 18v21–35 appeared first on Greenview Church.

Unshakeable, Unstealable Joy and Peace – John 16v16–33

It would be good if you could open up your Bible again to John chapter 16. This morning we come for a final time to the farewell teaching in John, and given that we started this last October, you might be thinking it’s been a very long farewell, a rather long goodbye. Partly this is due to the holidays, we took a bit of time off over Christmas, but it’s also partly due to the length of the teaching.
