The church displays the gospel when its leaders model maturity and spiritual integrity. Paul begins Titus by stressing the importance of godly elders for the sake of the entire household of faith.

In a city divided by class, ethnicity, and culture, the gospel unites Jews, Gentiles, rich, poor, slaves, and free into one family.

Unlike Roman culture—which prized personal freedom and privilege—Christians willingly limit their freedoms for the sake of one another.

The church must not mirror Rome’s contempt for the weak; instead, it must be a community of honour and welcome.

Rome was known for indulgence, immorality, and spectacle; the church is to live as people awake to eternity.

While Rome glorified political agitation and uprisings were common, Christians display trust in God by honouring governing authorities appropriately.

Rome glorified vengeance; we are called to glorify sacrificial love.

In the heart of the Roman Empire—where power, honour, social climbing, and vengeance defined the culture—Paul calls the church to display a radically different society shaped by mercy, humility, sacrifice, and love. The church becomes an alternative society only when shaped by God’s mercy rather than Rome’s patterns.

Can these statements help us today? Why is it important that we start with ‘We Believe’ rather than ‘I feel’?
