Today we celebrated our two graduating high school seniors, and our first lesson from Genesis 12, the Semicontinuous lectionary reading, was just right. God calls Abram to leave the land of his parents and receive God's blessing to become a blessing for others.

For our third consecutive Cake Sunday (Sundays in which something happens in worship worthy of celebrating with cake), we celebrated a wedding vow renewal for a 40th anniversary. Considering that their first wedding was just over lunch with a judge, and they never had their ring tattoos blessed, this one felt somewhat authentic! And who knew that Holy Trinity Sunday would provide the perfect New Testament lesson for a wedding? This one was a lot of fun.

Finally back after weeks of guest preachers and awful weather, this sermon about Jesus' palm procession into Jerusalem got into the way we try to limit Jesus with our expectations. Luckily Jesus did what he knew was right, for God and for us.

On International Women's Day, we get the famous story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. I tell about a couple of the women whose faith has shaped my own, and then I talked about how the Samaritan woman was an example to too-often-hapless Jesus' disciples.

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." I'm here to tell you, it's coming near right now in Minnesota.

This week, with confirmation of four young people, one of whom was baptized earlier in our gathering, it was time to talk about Christian freedom, the freedom God offers us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I tried to limit my advice-giving while offering our confirmands something to hold onto as they move into this new phase of their lives of discipleship.

Jumping off of 2 Timothy's famous declaration that "all scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching" and other uses, we dug into the iconic story of Jacob wrestling with the angel and gaining his identity as Israel. I suggested wrestling with the Word of God through Bible study, and invited the congregation to join me in doing so.

In worship today we changed a number of things: moved our new chairs for the first time away from being the pattern of the old pews, creating a new center aisle. We also began implementing a new liturgical setting, ELW Setting 4, by doing a full chanted eucharistic liturgy for the first time in a long time. In order to facilitate that, we created all new bulletins of a completely different size, scope, and scale. Jesus' confrontational teaching about hating father and mother, etc., helps us understand how we process and react to unfulfilled expectations, and Comments? Write it on the bulletin and give it back to me!

Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the shootings of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, along with yesterday's nationwide No Kings protests, plus the recent fifth anniversary of the murder of George Floyd and the upcoming 10th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine, I just.... I needed to say something. It was time to denounce political violence and white supremacy and Christian nationalism and acknowledge our relationship to all of those, then fall entirely on the grace of God.
