Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a look at the novel approach in chapter 45, how it relates to the chapters before and after it, and how the Alter Rebbe may have put a new twist on an age-old ritual. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)

For whom? (Tanya is a ברייתא)
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we examine the Alter Rebbe’s take on the concept of lishmah. We compare his ideas to the rishonim, contrast Tanya with Hilchos Talmud Torah, and ultimately we come to a clear view of what constitutes lishmah. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)P.S. I apologize for posting late, this was recorded on chol hamoed, but I forgot to post it until now.

The Bris Maamar (בעצם היום הזה)
The classic bris maamar from Torah Ohr. A classic for a reason. If there’s one specific shiur here that I think people are most likely to seek out actively, I would think it’s this one. The Alter Rebbe explains the three levels of refinement that Hashem bestows/will bestow upon us, and he explains why Avraham Avinu waited for so long to undergo circumcision.

Communication is Key (Tanya is a ברייתא)
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a look at the Alter Rebbe’s perspective on the mitzva to hate sinners, and how he uses context in Rishonim to drive home how it’s neigh impossible to hate anyone. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)

Torah isn’t the Kavanah (Tanya is a ברייתא)
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a dive into a seeming contradiction in the Alter Rebbe’s thoughts on Davening; along way to the answer, we bring out why Torah’s effect on Davening might not be what it’s made out to be. The Forbidden Fruit (Tanya is a ברייתא)
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we ask a most persnikety question: the Alter Rebbe seems to contradict his own logic in his hilchos lulav. While discovering the answer, we gain a deeper insight in his take on making a dira bitachtonim. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)

Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a dive into the the mitzva of v’hiskadishtem. Tanya is a ברייתא: An Appropriate Innuendo
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! Tanya is a ברייתא: What’s is Life Worth?
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a look at the Alter Rebbe’s brief but potent statement on the legal aspect of martyrdom, and we examine how all of the nuance in his choice of words all serve to propel his thesis of what makes a sin undesirable. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)

Tanya is a ברייתא: Believing in G-d isn’t the Point
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a look at the Alter Rebbe’s masterful evasion of taking sides in the dispute as to whether or not we’re commanded to believe in G-d, and how the evasion itself ties into his thesis about how we connect to G-d through doing miztvos. (The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. Enjoy the shiur!)

Likutei Torah Shir Hashirim 2:1-2

Likutei Torah Shir Hashirim 1:3-4
Welcome back to another shiur in Shir Hashirim of Likutei Torah! This week, we discuss what makes Shir Hashirim the song “of songs”, and how the bride and groom unite. So grab a Likutei Torah, sit back, and (consider how the only way to bridge the gap between the infinite and this distinctly self-centered world is in the same way that a song is formed, blending motifs and varying notes until, by the time it resolves, we’re left with something we can) enjoy!

Tanya is a ברייתא: the Scoop on Secular Studies
Welcome back to Tanya is a ברייתא! This week, we take a look at the Alter Rebbe’s view on secular studies, as it’s discussed in his niglah’dike works, and how it ties into his (seemingly) novel approach in Tanya. Likutei Torah Shir HaShirim 1:1-2
Welcome to a shiur in Shir Hashirim of Likutei Torah! So grab a Likutei Torah, sit back, and (contemplate how, notwithstanding Hashem’s utter unity in every fibre of possibility, he still desires a world down here in which we can have our own sense of self, enabling us to both have a relationship with him and still) enjoy!

Tanya is a ברייתא: Who Owns the Tanya?
This week, we take a deep dive into the idea of copyright, as it’s expressed in the Tanya. We give a background on the teshuva of the Rama, the common copyright practice, and then we look at the five “copyrights” given to the Tanya, and what they can show us about why the Alter Rebbe wrote the Tanya. Enjoy! This episode, as well as any episodes that I upload that were recorded by Chabad of Bondi, should bring merit to the souls of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, as well as everyone else murdered al kidush hasheim at the Bondi Beach Massacre. (This is not “just” a dedication, but in part an acknowledgement of facts: by a 19 Kislev farbreingen several years ago, many of the community members encouraged and committed to participating in a daily morning shiur in chassidus. There were many involved, including Rabbi Schlanger. I’m grateful for every community member who survived, and saddened by everyone who has passed. At the end of the day, the luminous quality of Torah draws us into seeing the good; I know that their souls are bound eternally in the bond of life. May all of the souls of those murdered be “gutte bettern” for us all, and may we be reunited with them with the coming of Moshiach, speedily and in our days!)

Tanya is a ברייתא: Can We Talk for a Second?
This week, we take a deep dive into an idea expressed at the very end of Tanya, to not talk idle talk on Shabbos. We discuss the halachos of talking on Shabbos, talking in general, and ultimately how they build the Alter Rebbe’s platonic ideal of Shabbos. Tanya Summary Shiur 55
Tanya Summary Shiur, Chapters 5-9 of part 5. The intention behind these shiurim is to be able to have an overview of Tanya in digestible chunks. Often, it feels like each days Tanya shines on its own, but it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture without taking a step back. The goal of this series was (and is, continuing here on Spotify) to give an opportunity to step back and review the weeks Tanya in 10-15 minutes. So sit back, relax, and enjoy! We’re not going into past tense; Tanya is timeless, these shiurim are still relevant. But we’re still pushing forward. New series already started dropping (although these last two weeks I was working on these last two summary shiurim, long story). But exciting things are on their way! Tanya is a ברייתא: pros of prose (4:32)
This week, we take a deep dive into a line in Iggeres Hakodesh 32, in which the Alter Rebbe emphasizes that he’s quoting from a poet. We discuss some theories as to how he felt about poetry in general, and why he would choose to quote a poet when he seemingly could’ve quoted a prophet. Tanya is a ברייתא: where’s our crown? (4:29)
This week we take a look at Igeres Hakodesh 29, and we take a deep dive into how the subtle changes in the Alter Rebbe’s wording between this letter and his Hilchos Talmud Torah. The estuary of halacha and kabalah tell a compelling story, about how grammar and typos can make a world of a difference. Tanya is a ברייתא: Zohar is the New Shulchan Aruch (4:26)
This week we take a look at Igeres Hakodesh 26, in which we ask a slew of questions on the Alter Rebbe’s conception of Talmud Torah when Moshiach comes. Tanya is a ברייתא: Hashem is Truly Everywhere? (4:25)
This week we take a look at Igeres Hakodesh 25, in which we ask a nudnik question: why does the Alter Rebbe choose to quote a less common pasuk to prove G-d’s omnipresence? In a very conspiracy-theorist-with-a-corkboard kind of way, we go through Midrash, Kabalah, philosophy, Musar, and Halacha, showing how this pasuk is the perfect choice to bring out every point the Alter Rebbe was trying to make simultaniously. Tanya is a ברייתא: talking in middle of davening (4:24)
Welcome to a new series of shiurim! The intention of this series is to attempt to bring out the Alter Rebbe’s intention by doing a deep dive into his (oftentimes niglah’dike) sources. This week we take a look at Igeres Hakodesh 24, which discusses talking in middle of davening. The fundamental question is, what exactly concerned the Alter Rebbe about talking during davening? We take apart the whole notion of talking in middle of davening and put it back together again, with the hope that by the end of it, we appreciate the inner mechanisms in a whole new light. Enjoy!
