Just as the people of Malachi's day were to live faithful covenant relationships in preparation for the coming of the great Messenger, so believers today are to remain faithful to the Lord and to other members of the new covenant community while being prepared for the Lord's second coming. Habakkuk struggled with how to understand God's actions in history, especially his use of an unrighteous nation as the instrument of his justice. God's answer to Habakkuk's objection was the "the righteous one will live by his faith." (2:4)

God gives warnings so we will not have to suffer His wrath. Judgment is certain if God’s warnings are not heeded and His provision for sin in the sacrifice of His Son is rejected. For the believer in Christ, God will discipline us—not from hate—but because He loves us. He knows that sin destroys and He wants us to be whole. This wholeness which is the promise of restoration awaits those who remain obedient to Him.

We are all a lot like Jonah. We get mad and throw our sucker in the sand. However, the Lord desires the salvation of the lost more than his servants do, which means that his people should pray that they see all people as God sees them - in need of hearing his message of good news and responding to it in such a way that it results in their salvation. God's wrath against Edom for its sin is the single concern of this brief book; Obadiah prophesied that God would destroy the nation of Edom because of its pride and violence - particularly in it looking down on Judah at the time of its misfortune. While we may look at this little book and think it does not apply to us at all, it still does. Join us as we discuss Obadiah!
