    2SSM • Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004)

‘’I’ll get a Wimpy’’ In this spine-tingling, synth-dripping episode, Dave and Tom bravely descend into the dangerously underfunded corridors of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, where the beats are as haunted as the hospital and the budget is flatter than Dr. Rick Dagless M.D.’s coke float (sorry Dag). The lads lovingly dissect the iconic soundtrack, including the sultry (and questionably HR-compliant) anthem “One Track Lover,” which proves that romance is alive and well, as long as it’s extremely repetitive and slightly unsettling. Meanwhile, “Scotch Mist” drifts in like a fog of pure ‘80s ambience, or possibly just a side effect of something Dr. Lucien Sanchez left uncapped in the lab. Expect deep dives into other standout tracks that sound like they were composed on a haunted Casio keyboard during a power outage. We’ll also pay tribute to the unforgettable cast: Garth Marenghi himself (author, visionary, dreamweaver, definitely not compensating), Dean Learner (producer, ladies’ man, bearer of mysterious subplots), and the ever-intense Liz Asher, who brings both psychic energy and questionable medical credentials to the mix. So pull back your hood, plug in your headphones, and enjoy... well, I SAY enjoy BONUS MATERIAL: Doris Norton - Raptus - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgHixmkV3xI

    2SSM • 1980s Cartoon Themes

“Thundercats, Thundercats, Thundercats….HOOOOOO!!!” Dust off your VHS tapes and prepare for a nostalgia overload! In this episode, the boys dive headfirst into the gloriously over-the-top world of 1980s cartoon theme tunes. We’re talking heroic guitar riffs, synths that could power a small city, and lyrics that explain the entire plot before the first ad break. Among others, the chaps unravel the epic, thunderous drama of Thundercats (because subtlety was clearly illegal in the '80s), marvel at how Inspector Gadget made “go-go” sound like a legitimate strategy, and groove through the high-octane cool of M.A.S.K (where the theme song is somehow faster than the cars). Oh…and of course, we’ll take a deep dive into DuckTales, the only theme that can make you want to solve mysteries, manage a billionaire’s finances, and dance like Beyoncé at the same time. Expect big tunes, bigger nostalgia, and at least one co-host attempting a dramatic “DuckTales! AWoo-oo!” (badly).

In this final episode of the season, the lads (and Brian) grab a tin, and do some reflecting on the myriad of sounds that made up SSSM Season 2. S2 E10 • Pulp Fiction (1994)

“Zed's dead, baby. Zed’s dead.” In this, the SEASON TWO FINALE - the lads open the briefcase of cool and let that golden glow of 1990s swagger blind them, as they tackle the beast that is the Pulp Fiction soundtrack…aka the mixtape that made you quote from the bible. We’re talking surf rock, country, soul, and a dash of Samuel L. Jackson’s great vengeance and furious anger. From the utterly anthemic “Misirlou” shredding harder than Vincent Vega on a dance floor, to the tender strains of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” making everyone feel both hopelessly romantic and deeply uncomfortable, this hand-picked soundtrack is a masterclass in making chaos sound classy. Also - expect a heated debate on whether “Flowers on the Wall” is a carefree flowerchild romp or a deeply depressive cry for help AND tips on how to survive an attack from boogie-woogie vampire, Jools Holland. It’s retro, it’s reckless, and it’s got more grooves than Tarantino’s favourite foot pics. 🕶️💥 BONUS CONTENT: Lemmings Paintball Pulp Fiction Spoof - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIG4EIsFAF0 Fun Lovin' Criminals - Scooby Snacks - https://youtu.be/HEMjF2n3-SQ Jan August - Misirlou - https://open.spotify.com/track/6TaEkHgzQ6gFqEvXZyZ0HI?si=674b8bfb781b4d1a Cartoon Network Pulp Fiction Parody (Featuring Shaggy & Droopy Dog) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36u-2Ge8vEE Spy Hard Pulp Fiction Parody - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Ozj5SXstE Neil Diamond - Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon - https://open.spotify.com/track/7J8qTx9CRh9tXRh74YmyOT?si=316c10ce81e94a10 The Champs - Tequila - https://open.spotify.com/track/5gJKsGij5oGt5H5RSFYXPa?si=a1cf20782d564a08

S2 E9 • Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) with James Bennett

“I’m the welcome wagon, it’s nice to meet’cha, friend!” Hadouken your ears! The lads are back (joined by good pal, and all-round Street Fighter connoisseur James “Jimmy” Bennett) and they’re all diving fist-first into the soundtrack for Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie — a 90s grunge-fest where Alice in Chains, Silverchair, Korn and KMFDM among others, battle for sonic supremacy. We’ll throw down on the heavy riffs, wild moods, and cultural chaos that made Street Fighter II more than just a game — it was a global phenomenon that turned arcade cabinets into arenas, and anime fans into headbangers. From Alice in Chains’ powerful “Them Bones” to Silverchair’s raw “Israel’s Son” and KMFDM’s industrial “Ultra,” this soundtrack hits harder than a Sonic Boom at full volume. The lads will also delve into their hazy early teen years, and uncover many a riveting anecdote, which may, or may not, include: Video-shop fountains, wet Mcdonalds bags….and Maplins! It’s nostalgia, noise, and nonsense — one big musical Combo Breaker! 💥 Bonus Content: Street Burger - Japanese McDonald’s Commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrNj7JxZVc0&feature=youtu.be Pablo Cruise - Love Will FInd A Way https://open.spotify.com/track/2LqzuRukwnpeWYLXBtiwmq?si=ee367d9adefc46bb Shpongle - Dorset Perception https://open.spotify.com/track/5SBrBmHBMD1FjHZrWdabsK?si=ac63a2ea84a6400c Enya - Orinoco Flow https://open.spotify.com/track/4bQNusmmVudLxIiexglzh6?si=96a4dd2bfa994a64 John Davis and The Monster Orchestra - I Can’t Stop https://open.spotify.com/track/7uD4gSr8Dp01R3gwzO9XdW?si=7050b2724e2b4bef

    S2 E8 • Lost In Translation (2003)

‘’LIP MY STOCKINGS!’’ In this episode, Dave and Tom dive into the hazy, dreamy world of Lost in Translation — the 2003 Sofia Coppola film where Bill Murray whispers things, Scarlett Johansson wears wigs and stares at city lights, and the real star? The freakin’ soundtrack. Join the boys as they sip Suntory whiskey (for podcasting times), and dissect standout tracks like Death in Vegas' "Girls", Phoenix’s "Too Young", and that one moment when Bill croons Roxy Music’s "More Than This" with the weary energy of a karaoke philosopher. We’ll explore how Coppola handpicked tracks like she was curating the ultimate Tokyo heartbreak mixtape, and how My Bloody Valentine fans (me neither) were thrilled to find Kevin Shields back in action — even if only briefly. Expect awkward metaphors, strong opinions about ambient guitar fuzz, dodgy Japanese accents, and at least one attempt to explain shoegazing to millennials. In addition to all this fun, the boys catch up with Brian about his holiday in Rhyl, explore the merits of the ‘3-pube method’ (try it yerself!) and discuss JML tat. What’s not to love?? It’s moody. It’s melodic. It’s more than this. S2 E7 • Batman (1989)

"Gentleman, let us broaden our minds... Lawrence!" In this bat-tastic episode, the boys dive utility-belt first into the purple-tinted fever dream that is Prince's 1989 Batman soundtrack—the musical oddity that asked, What if the Joker had a groove? and What if Gotham threw a dance party at a crime scene? Dave and Tom unravel the purple enigma track by track, covering hits like the head-scratcher banger “Batdance.” Is it a song? Is it three songs? Is it an audio hallucination brought on by too much Joker gas? “Partyman,” the funkiest war crime ever committed on vinyl, and “Scandalous,” the sultry slow jam you definitely shouldn’t be playing in the Batcave if Alfred’s nearby. Even hit singles like “Trust” and “Electric Chair” make the chaps ask the big questions, like: Was this soundtrack made for a movie, or did Prince just decide to adopt Batman for tax reasons? How much music can one man pull out of a vault and palm off as a Soundtrack? Anyway, grab your grappling hook, put on your vulcanized rubber suit, and join the SSSM crew for a funk-fueled caper through one of the weirdest, wildest musical side quests in superhero history. It’s a bird! It’s a bat! No—it’s Prince, and he’s funked up Gotham real good. S2 E6 • Carlito's Way (1993) with Jake Whiston

S2 E6 • Carlito’s Way (1993) "He's got a good future if he can live past next week." In this episode, Dave and Tom are joined by their good pal, and hotshot editor from “The Media” - Jake Whiston, together they will be diving headfirst into the Carlito's Way soundtrack — a 90s gangster film wrapped in a disco fever dream. Join the trio as they unpack the sultry sounds of Spanish Harlem, where bongos echo like gunshots and Jellybean Benitez spins tracks so smooth they could talk their way out of a Rico charge. From the soulful croon of "You Are So Beautiful" (with it’s cartoon duck accompaniment) to the funky Disco strut of "Rock the Boat" we explore how this soundtrack is less a “criminal enterprise” and more of a “dancefloor felony.” Plus, we try to uncover the secrets behind “Jellybean” Benitez’s ubiquity, and we fill our bongo tally while discussing their role in the realm of cinematic tension. So pour yourself a rum and coke, loosen that top button (or more if you’re feeling dangerous), and get ready to boogie your way through betrayal, redemption, and a whole lot of Disco. S2 E5 • The Italian Job (1969)

‘’You wouldn't hit a man with no trousers on, would you!?’’ Buckle up, because this episode is all about the 1969 classic The Italian Job…or more specifically, its iconic, funky, and slightly unhinged soundtrack. The lads will be taking you on a joyride through Quincy Jones’ score, complete with whimsical horns, swaggering basslines, and that sweet, sweet ‘60s groove that makes you want to plan a heist (or at least dramatically walk down the street in slow motion). From the ‘hazy summers’ day’ opening of On Days Like These (which makes you feel like a sophisticated con artist sipping espresso in the Alps) to the absolute chaos of The Self-Preservation Society (where a full-on Cockney choir reminds you that crime can be fun), Dave and Tom break down the sounds of mini-coopers, high-stakes robbery, and possibly the best traffic jam in cinematic history. Expect dramatic (crap) reenactments of instrumental solos, terrible attempts at Cockney accents, (yes, Sir Michael Caine!) and a deep dive into why Quincy Jones’ music makes grand theft auto seem so... stylish. So grab your bowler hat, practice your best Michael Caine impression, and join us for a Club biscuit, Ronseal-fueled caper! S2 E4 • The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

"We can't hold out forever, Kup… but we can give them one humongous repair bill!" In this episode, the lads dive, nay glide into the most metal soundtrack of all time—literally. The Transformers: The Movie (1986) OST is crammed full of epic rock ballads, synth-fueled anthems, and the undeniable power of ‘Friend of the Show’ Stan Bush - to turn even the clunkiest robot battle into an emotional rollercoaster. There’s that theme, the genius of "The Touch," the unhinged energy of "Dare," and questions like, didn’t Unicron (although he is just a giant floating metallic sphincter) deserve a better theme song? Do you remember the Fizzy Pop man? And why does Weird Al Yankovic randomly show up in a movie about intergalactic war? So, pop open a bottle of Tizer, and join Dave and Tom as they crank up the volume, and roll out! S2 E3 • Soulboy (2010) with Simon Bough

"So what's new?" "Nowt you little divvy, that's the whole point!" In this episode, the lads are lacing up their dance shoes, popping some talc on the floor, and jumping into the stomping, floor-filling soundtrack of SoulBoy (2010) the film that brought Northern Soul back into the cinematic spotlight (and gave our knees a workout they weren’t ready for). Joined by their good pal Simon ‘Boff’ Bough (an extra, chauffer and unofficial accent coach on the film set, no less!) they’ll spin through the legendary tunes that make this soundtrack a crate-digger’s dream. From Wigan Casino anthems to those deep-cut gems that make you feel like a true soul aficionado. Expect on-set anecdotes, nonsense chat about backbeats, descending brass sections, and the kind of euphoric choruses that make you want to throw your arms in the air (even if your dance moves are more dad-at-a-wedding than Northern Soul legend). Along the way, Dave, Tom, and Boff will answer the big questions: Why does Northern Soul refuse to fade away? Is it physically possible to dance to Soul Galore without grinning? And what’s the ideal outfit for an all-nighter (besides sweatbands and sheer determination)? So, whether you’re a seasoned soul stomper or just here for the nostalgia - get ready for an episode packed with enough four-to-the-floor beats to keep you grooving ‘til sunrise. S2 E2 • The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) “I've never seen so many electric jellyfish in all my life!" In this episode, the lads don their red beanies, pour themselves a coconut-based rum cocktail, and sail into the dreamy, offbeat waters of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou soundtrack. From Bowie in Portuguese, to the contents of Mark Mothersbaugh’s sonic toolbox; chocked full of whimsical synths, eclectic bossa nova, folk, and other oceanic oddities - it all makes Dave and Tom feel like melancholy deep-sea explorers, or at least very stylish ones. S1 E10 • Trainspotting (1996) “Yes! You fuckin’ DANCER!” For the final episode of Season 1, Dave and Tom dive headlong into the toilet bowl, to discuss the sonic chaos of Trainspotting. It's a collection of tracks where Britpop, techno, and existential dread collide in a haze of ‘90s brilliance. Highlights include tunes that made Iggy Pop cool (again), Blur the kings of ennui, and Underworld the sound of your worst/best night out. Expect the usual Witty Banter™ and a deep dive into why ‘Lust for Life’ feels like a caffeinated sprint through bad decisions. S1 E9 • House / Hausu (1977)

S1 E9 • House / Hausu (1977) “Oh, my! That's naughty” In this arse-bitingly good episode of Silver Screen Sound Machine, the boys will be wrapping their ears around the soundtrack to the cult-classic Japanese horror comedy - House. Helmed by the Japanese rock group Godiego this soundtrack spans the genres from naive, nakedly emotional piano pieces, through wild, thrashing, funky jams, Boogie Woogie, Doors-esque jazz, and even ersatz Blues by way of the Cookie Monster. The soundtrack of House perfectly captures the film's unique blend of horror, comedy, and surrealism, creating a truly unforgettable auditory experience. You will believe a cat can play the piano. S1 E8 • Beverly Hills Cop (1984) “Look man, I ain't fallin' for no banana in my tailpipe!” In this episode, the boys don their letterman jackets and dive headfirst into the 1984 tour-de-force that is the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. A synth-drenched ode to the sound of US top-40s radio in the 1980s punctuated by a whole tailpipe full of patented SSSM nonsense. From the iconic and ever-present character theme of "Axel F", through to the suburban Dad anthem that is Glenn Frey’s "The Heat Is On", and the mind-blowingly catchy "Neutron Dance" by the Pointer Sisters. This album does nothing by halves and it's not one to be missed. Beyond the music - You'll be astounded at how much weird rage Tom can conjure up towards the word "Synthwave" and you'll be delighted as Dave recounts how this film took him two steps closer to manhood via the medium of workout lycra. So get your ears ready for an aural ridealong with the boys through the sun-drenched track listing of this 80s classic. S1 E7 • O' Brother Where Art Thou? (2000)

S1 E7 • O' Brother Where Art Thou? (2000) “I'm a ‘Dapper Dan’ man!” In this episode, Dave and Tom are strapping on their banjos, dusting off their overalls, and plunging headfirst into the Coen Brothers’ down-home, toe-tappin’, soul-stirrin’ soundtrack of O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?. Packed full of rollicking bluegrass, gospel, and folk tunes that somehow made mandolins and washboards cool again. Including firm favourites like “Man of Constant Sorrow” (aka the most depressing sing-along you’ll ever love), “Down to the River to Pray” (ideal for all your river-adjacent prayer needs) and “You Are My Sunshine” (hitherto known as ‘Soft Boy Nonsense’). You can look forward to the lads channeling their inner ‘Soggy Bottom Boys’ and exploring some questionable shower rituals. So, grab your spoons, comb that pomade into your barnet and get ready for a hootin’, hollerin’, hair-raising series of hobo delusions. S1 E6 • Bloodsport (1988)

S1 E6 • Bloodsport (1988) “Very good… but brick not hit back.” In episode six, the lads dive deep into the unforgettable soundtrack of Bloodsport (1988), the cult martial arts classic that catapulted Jean-Claude Van Damme to stardom. Bloodsport’s soundtrack captures both the raw energy and emotional journey of Frank Dux as he fights for honor (and questionable world records) in the notorious ‘Kumite’, deep in the depths of Kowloon’s infamous walled city. Hear the boys grapple with the fruits of Paul Hertzog’s musical labour; the pounding synths, the driving percussion, and evocative Eastern-inspired melodies. Not only that, but you will hear Dave drop some timeless fashion tips, and Tom gets unreasonably excited about a synthesizer. This episode isn’t only a juddering kick to the Dim Maks, it’s also a celebration of the music and machismo that made Bloodsport an enduring action classic. S1 E4 • Fight Club (1999)

S1 E4 • Fight Club (1999) “I’d fight Ghandi” In this episode, the lads take a trip down to nihilism-town and drink deep of the gritty, pulsating sounds offered up by the OST of David Fincher's cult classic, Fight Club. They’ll be exploring this eclectic score, weaving between the myriad genres served up by the Dust Brothers from industrial rock, and electronica to Middle-Eastern inspired exotica and cheery Yiddish pop. The boys will have a sweaty wrassle with this eclectic and schizophrenic mix of sounds while discussing the film's underlying themes of rebellion, brutality, masculinity, and societal disenfranchisement… Cheer up goth! S1 E2 • Shaft (1971)

S1 E2 • Shaft (1971) ''YA DAMN RIGHT'' In Episode 2, the lads dive head-first into the iconic soundtrack of Shaft, (starring Richard Roundtree) the blaxploitation classic that redefined the genre. This episode explores Isaac Hayes’ legendary score of funky, soul-infused music that perfectly captured the film's gritty urban atmosphere and powerful protagonist. Dave and Tom will discuss THAT opening theme and its role in establishing the film's tone and style. The cultural and political significance of "Shaft" and its soundtrack, and how it resonated with audiences over the years. There will, of course, be some personal anecdotes (Dave’s introduction to the Shaft theme via a 90’s UK breakfast cereal ad anyone?) and nonsense, thrown into the mix for good measure. Warning; some mild daftness, choice language (and a myriad of penis jokes) to be expected. Who’s that cat that won’t cop out, when there’s danger all about??? Pop your headphones in and find out!
