    48 - please

This may be one of the most powerful episodes we’ve done. Chris Hathcock of The Reticent talks to us about their recent album, “please,” which Jack Mangan ranked as a Noteworthy Album of 2025. Chris understands the psychology and reality of music and depression at about five levels deeper than anyone else. Jack is usually pretty stoic, but he gets emotional during the course of this conversation. This one just hits home. Trigger warning: There is frank, open talk about suicide in this episode. If you are aware that you or someone you know may be at risk, call “988” from your phone. You are not alone. You are not without hope. SLAM Bumper: Jason McMasterQuotes: -My first book was just a humor thing, which is extra funny considering how depressing my music is.-The depression may be telling us the truth as it sees it.-When the despair comes, if you can, see if there's a kindness you can dohttps://thereticent.net/homeThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

I grew up going to $5 shows, why isn't it $5?” You can see I've got a pretty good, scar across my neck. Mike Bollenbach of Full Well Studios Lyrics reference: Alice Cooper Quotes: Being in the studio with Alice Cooper and Bob Ezrin The music industry is in a sort of depressing state when it comes to compensation for your recorded material As an engineer in the year 2025, you need to be adaptable. You need to be able to embrace the new technology that's coming out. You need to be able to work in all those mediums. The world is so inundated with the amount of people putting out music, that it's really hard to have a charting record in 2025. The days of bands, you know, like, like supergroups. . . And if you're not gonna be happy, nobody's gonna get you happy. If you're really in that much pain, you don't want to hit up 988, you don't want to, you know, hit up your mom or somebody, hit us up.You gotta leave some kind of light in there. You gotta trust in God, and listen to good music. That pulls people out of bad situations, your head, your mind.Things got a little heated right there, didn't they?We try to provide a silver lining and give energy and uplift people at the same time with it. Like, hey, we're here, we know that things might not be that great in life, but you know what? If there's a will, there's a way.[Re: band manager, Larry Jones]: I've never seen anybody who cared so much, who pushes so much, who fights so much for us, stands up for us. With promoters, for anybody that's trying to screw us around, he's always got our back. He takes care of so much, like, booking and accommodations, the travel. . . He sometimes complains the whole way, but, you know, he wouldn't have it any other way, because he loves doing it, and. . . he's pretty much our fifth member. It's so much harder when it's just one person. SLAM: Music Survival Guide 27 - Neil Giraldo - Stay Locked-Most of the time, when people fall into dark places, there's a part of their being, whether it's an artistic or creative side of them, that's screaming to get out. -12 tapes for a penny.-We're driving, and all of a sudden, we get hit from behind while we're on the freeway, going 75 miles an hour.-I study a lot of philosophy and a lot of spirituality with the I Ching and the Kundalini and the Tao, and all this stuff, right? So, I followed that strongly, and without that, I wouldn't be where I am today.-That's why I stress the spirituality for everybody. . . It's good for the body, it's good for the soul. What's good for the mind is good for the soul. You gotta integrate all those things. Had I not had that, I wouldn't have been able to deal with any of it, any at all, and it kept me grounded.-You gotta live through this world kind of naked. You gotta be. . . not afraid of being exposed- This ain't normal, I know that, but it just happened in this lifetime.-Respect's easy. If you're not confident, and you're not secure, there's no way that's gonna happen. I don't care if in a band, in a relationship, It's not gonna happen.-Just do it and have fun. It's not about a cash thing. In fact. . . money's gonna be going to so many organizations for that it's not about that. It's about the songs and the music.-Find the spirituality, no matter what it is, in the dark - - not the darkest moment. Because the darkest moment is going to be the easiest one to be able to go there, because you're going to be so dark, you're gonna need help. . . Try to go when you're right in the middle.-If you happen to get in a dark place, reading will get you out of it. Read something positive. Find something that you can connect with. . . Pick up a pencil.-Most of the time, when people fall into dark places, there's a part of their being, whether it's an artistic or creative side of them, that's screaming to get out.-Once you lock it, stay locked.-Second chances are good, and they happen, but not threes and fours. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

26 - You Have to Outlive That

James Rivera, a.k.a. Vampiro Lyrics reference: Helstar Quotes from the episode: Why do you think Jeff Loomis is one of his biggest fans? Management can either make you or break you. We had a bad management. And so for the younger bands, you know, you're pretty much going to be on your own, and you're going to deliver a record, and you're going to say, “Hey, it's a license deal!” and they're going to give you nothing. But they're going to put you out there in the world. You know what? You should take it, because that's as far as you're going to get now. We're still reeling from the death of Ozzy Osbourne, which I thought would never happen. It just seemed like he was gonna outlive us all. So think about it. If you got a flu... you've got Covid... Do you think you could sing? No, there's no way in the world what you do. It's affecting your body. So that's what a lot of people need to understand. Lead singers don't have it that easy, although everybody else thinks they do, but they don't. And you know what depression is. Yes, I've been there. I thought about jumping off a bridge. I thought about hanging myself, or whatever. But you know what at the end of the day it doesn't do you no good, man. You're gone. You have to outlive that. You have to be very confident in what you believe in. What a lot of people don't believe in is themselves. And you know what? Once you learn to love yourself, you will get over it, and it's not selfish. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

SLAM Summit 25 - Junior Bourcier and Francois Babin of Atomik Train Episode 25 in 2025! Lyrics reference: Red Rider It's a lifetime quest. If we want our lives to change, we have to change. You have to work on yourself. As Francois said, you have to give yourself love. There's a lot of heart in that music. There's a lot of energy. There's a lot of fun, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Have a really really good time playing music and inspire people to accomplish their dreams and have fun. So did the hat have to come off at the nudist camp too? We are taking care of pretty much everything. So we have to have a lot of different hats to make sure that the job's done.I don't play that often, but when I do, there's so much music inside me, it has to come out somehow, and when I play, I explode.if you're in trouble, don't, don't, don't run. They will judge your face, your body, your tits, your voice, your personality.~You're on tour. You're at work. You're not playing around. You can't be late. ~I'm going to put out the new song that I co-wrote with Ron Wasserman, the great composer that wrote the Power Rangers (the “Go Go Power Rangers” song). ~You are the Karma. You gotta pay back. You gotta fight back.~We say the compliments at the beginning, and then we proceed with all of the hard stuff.~Shoutout to Doug Aldrich~Respect for Ronnie James DioThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

20 - It Gets Crazier and Crazier

It's a solo summit! - - with the one-and-only Pat Gesualdo - - founder of the Official Metal Hall of Fame AND the D.A.D. (Drums And Disabilities) Drum Therapy program. He's truly a force for good in the music industry. Lyrics reference: Deep PurpleSome quotes:~Hearing that his dying wish was to get his platinum albums, I kind of took it into my own hands to try to help that situation.~I pioneered the healing art of drum therapy, in which we train the synapses and the brains through drumming, which the D.A.D. Program is all based off.~Drumming helped me alleviate my disabilities.~Yeah, I witnessed you playing with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Geoff Tate. . . ~Eddie Trunk's just been great. He's been our host forever since the beginning. And of course, Wendy Dio, Cathy Rankin right? Cathy's awesome.~The Metal Hall of Fame gala is gonna be Grammy Award level. I mean, all the way to the top. It's gonna be huge. ~You may not get a great response. Don't give up. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

19 - Being Around People Who Inspire You

This SLAM Summit's featured guests are two great drummers from two great European Progressive bands: Alexander Skepp of Gosta Berlings Saga and Georg Edert of Elder. Gosta Berlings Saga have a new 2025 album called "Forever Now." You MUST check it out as soon as you finish listening to this discussion.  This one is also special on the SLAM side because Jack Mangan is joined by two brilliant SLAM Band cohosts: Mark Pruett, and Sheila Unwin, Ed.D. Lyrics reference: Elder Quotes: ~When times are tough, you look for those moments that you can sort of stay in for a while and just be there. And this album sort of became that for us.~I do struggle with going back to a rhythm of practicing coming from tour when everything's super structured. And then you're at home, and there's no tour manager telling you to get up at 8 and go practice. You have to do that yourself.~Something that I look for everywhere in life really is just being around people who inspire you.~5 cooks alone cooking for the whole crew.~Mark tells a great story about Steven Tyler and Joe Perry (of Aerosmith) getting on each others’ nerves. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

    18 - God is a DJ

Mr. Linden, Miss Min.D - - both of Seattle, and Joseph “DJ Dimension” Mercado of Phoenix, formerly New York and Miami talk to me (Jack Mangan) about the highs and lows and joys, frustrations, and dangers of the DJ music life and club community. Three smart and powerful creators. I learned A LOT. Lyrics reference: M/A/R/R/S ~Bottom line is, we love the music. I remember, I was like, maybe 10 years old, and I had the old tape recorder, black thing, the little buttons on the, you know, and I was recording off the radio, doing the DJ thing.~She's more of a boots. . . cats. . . boots, cats, boots. . . cats. . . boots, cats.~Oh, you're pretty good for a girl. ~The Limelight(NYC) was notorious for some of the crazy shit that went on there.~The problem is that in the clubs, vices are very readily available. So it's super easy. So you just have to be careful.~I didn't know. I just made it because I like the sound, but I wasn't putting a label on it myself. So you know just I'm learning as I go. ~it's important, especially as an older DJ, to understand that the clubbing is really a young person's game. And it sucks to say that, but it's true. Absolutely there is ageism. And there's a reason why fewer and fewer older DJs, that aren't superstar established.~Bottom line is, we love the music. I remember, I was like, maybe 10 years old, and I had the old tape recorder, black thing, the little buttons on the, you know, and I was recording off the radio, doing the DJ thing.~It's so hard to make any movement in the industry now.~Shout out to DJ Esteban. We're joined by Dr. Carolyn Cavanaugh-Toft of Arizona State. And we also talk about Phish, Ministry , Jonathan Coulton, and lots more. Lyrics Reference: Shakespeare’s Sister. Quotes from the episode: ~“If it was in a Spinal Tap movie or something, it would almost be comical. But you know the fact that it was real, and these were real people who had died.”~“Seeing live music is really one of my favorite things to do. So that's really my passion, which I think is is one reason why I kind of got into this topic and wanted to bridge my 2 passions. . . suicide, prevention, psychology, mental health, and then music and the appreciation for music”~“We really need to protect this profession that does so much for us.”~“There are certain things we know that put people at risk for developing PTSD.”~“Reducing the stigma, and not only mental health but suicide, suicide, prevention.”~“it's not like these large record labels don't have any money, you know. There's resources out there”~“Musicians and veterans often share some of the same unique risk factors. Loneliness. So veterans, when they come back from war, they may feel alone. Some of the relationship strain may also kind of be similar with being on tour versus being deployed to another country. So I think there's some of those risk factors, substance abuse definitely. Veterans are at a higher risk for substance abuse as our musicians. So there's definitely overlap in some risk factors. I think there's a need to help both to help both professions.”This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

13 - Steve Rosen talks Eddie Van Halen

Acclaimed journalist, Steve Rosen, speaks with Jack Mangan of Support Life And Music about his 2024 book, "Tonechaser," chronicling the rise, fall, and end of his close friendship with Edward Van Halen.   Some topics/quotes from this Summit:   Alex Van Halen's book (SPOILER: Steve likes it)"But what do I do now? Do I keep writing the book? People are going to think: 'Edward passes away, and you know you're going to just write a book and cash in on that,' and the thought of that made me sick in my stomach." "And I will tell you that those 1st 2 albums, and the 1st 2 tours is when he was happiest, in my mind. Everything was new to him, you know, and everything was an adventure and an exploration." "Without trying to be glib or anything, I knew that early on the cigarettes were were going to kill him. They're going to kill him before the coke or the alcohol did. . . And you know, that's sadly what happened."". . . and Blackmore was amazing, and I know I kind of say those things about him, and I write about him in the book. That's just who Richie Blackmore was. That doesn't take away one ounce of who he was as a guitar, player and songwriter. My God! The sound of his guitar!"  "I've seen a lot of journalists who have been running for years, and I saw how blase they got. I thought, you fuckers! Do you know how lucky you are sitting in that room?""And Edward would say over and over, 'Yeah, I've never played sober,' you know, and he was terrified to do it. Could he have done it? Yeah, absolutely."   "Could these guys have created without the drugs. I certainly think so. Did they think so? They didn't. And so that becomes part of the process. I don't think it's necessarily self destructive. I don't think that they set out to damage themselves."  Support Life And Music: Fighting back against music industry suicide and self-destruction. https://www.supportlifeandmusic.org/  Tonechaser book: https://www.tonechaserbook.com/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy
