National Day of Awareness for MMIW: Hanna Harris
Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. In honor of this day, today’s episode is about just one of these missing and murdered women. Hanna Harris was born on May 5, 1992 in Montana. She was raised in Lame Deer, MT on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. On July 3, 2013, Hannah left her 10 month old son in the care of her uncle while she went out with family and friends to the 4th of July Powwow. Her car was found abandoned on a dead end road early the next morning. Without the help of police, her family was able to gather over 100 people to help search for Hanna. After five agonizing days, her body was discovered in a field near her car. Hanna’s killers were eventually arrested and prosecuted, but if the authorities would have stepped in and helped from the beginning, maybe one of her killers wouldn’t be free right now. This is just one Indigenous woman’s story, but there are countless others. The statistics are staggering. If you want to help bring awareness to this epidemic, wear red today, share this episode, donate to or get involved with the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center at https://www.niwrc.org/. The Brutal Murder of Dr. Teresa Sievers
In 2015, Dr. Teresa Sievers was brutally murdered in her home in Florida. She had left a family trip early because she had a medical practice to run. Her husband and two daughters were thousands of miles away at the time of the murder, but investigators still suspected her husband almost immediately. Mark Sievers was over the top dramatic during his initial interview with police. Unfortunately, investigators had nothing to link him to the crime. Until two weeks later when they received an anonymous tip from someone in Missouri. This led them to Curtis Wayne Wright and Jimmy Ray Rodgers. Turns out, Curtis and Mark had been best friends since high school. In fact, Mark had just been Curtis’s best man in his wedding two months earlier. With the help of recovered GPS records and CCTV footage, detectives were able to link Curtis, Jimmy, and Mark to the murder of Dr. Teresa Sievers. All three received different sentences and two of them continue trying to appeal. Come along with Hannah and her mom as they discuss Hocus Pocus the cat, the “Hammer”, and how we’re not the friend you call to help you bury a body. Missing for 27 years: Jacob Wetterling
During the fall of 1989 in a small Minnesota town, three young boys rode their bikes to the video store to rent a movie. On their way home, they were confronted by a man in a mask who ordered them to lay in a ditch. The man told two of the boys to run away and not to look back or else he would shoot them. The boy that was left with the man was Jacob Wetterling. It would be 27 years before his remains would be discovered and his family would see justice. In 2016, Danny Heinrich was questioned about Jacob’s disappearance. He made a full confession and led investigators to his body. In exchange for his full cooperation, Heinrich was not charged with murder but just the child sexual abuse charges he was already facing. Jacob’s family and community are the epitome of hope. On October 22, 2016, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton declared October 22nd to be “Jacob Wetterling Day.” Every year on this day, residents leave their porch lights on to honor Jacob and all other missing children. Come along with Hannah and Lainey as they discuss this case and Hannah’s favorite things: Harry Potter and Taylor Swift. White Island Eruption
Tourists had been visiting White Island in New Zealand for over 30 years. Despite it being an active volcano, no one had ever been injured by it erupting before. On December 9, 2019, there were multiple tour groups visiting the island when it started to erupt. Because White Island is a stratovolcano, it isn’t lava that erupts out of it, but steam. There were forty-seven people on the island when it erupted. Twenty-two people lost their lives, but the rest survived. The survivors have overcome horrific burns but that’s nothing compared to the psychological trauma that comes with surviving a catastrophic event. In the midst of all this chaos and pain and terror, there were ordinary people who did extraordinarily brave things to help others. Ordinary people who defied orders in order to save lives. The stories of these survivors and rescuers prove that you can always find goodness and hope if you look for it. Come along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss demontors, pyroclastic surges, the Titanic, and Star Wars. The Horrific Murder of Sarah Cherry
On July 6, 1988, 12-year-old Sarah Cherry was babysitting for the first time. Mr. and Mrs. Henkel had hired Sarah to watch their 10-month-old baby, Monica. When Mrs. Henkel arrived home around 3pm, baby Monica was sound asleep in her crib, but Sarah was nowhere to be found. Her glasses, shoes, and jacket were still in the home so Mrs. Henkel knew something was horribly wrong. She called 911. When detectives arrived, Mrs. Henkel handed them two items she had found in her driveway that afternoon: a notebook and a receipt to an autobody repair shop. The name at the top of the receipt was Dennis Dechaine. After Sarah’s body was discovered two days later, investigators were able to arrest Dennis Dechaine for her murder. Despite all the evidence pointing towards Dennis, he still maintains his innocence and his family and friends have created a nonprofit dedicated to proving he was framed for the murder. Come along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss hotdog preferences, keeping your children in bubblewrap, and our favorite Spongebob moments. The Brutal Murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier - Part 2
In part two of this two part series, Hannah tells Bob all about Ian Bailey and his multiple arrests for the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Ian had given a statement to police early on in the investigation just because he was a neighbor and journalist. After Marie Farrell identified Ian as the man she saw on the bridge the night of Sophie’s murder, police closed in on him. Ian was arrested twice but had to be released after 12 hours of questioning both times because police didn’t have enough evidence to keep him. Ian ends up suing the papers twice for libel and loses both times. In fact, these trials bring to light a lot of evidence that makes Ian look more guilty of the murder. But then in 2008, Marie Farrell retracts her original statement about seeing Ian on the bridge the night of Sophie’s murder. She ends up lying so much that she was no longer a reliable witness. Listen to the entire episode to find out what happens to Ian and if anyone is ever convicted of killing Sophie. Come along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss rollercoasters, canes, and are women who consume true crime content more observant than the rest of the population? The Brutal Murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier - Part 1
On December 23, 1996, in the picturesque countryside of Schull, County Cork, Ireland, a woman’s body was found brutally murdered near her holiday home. This was Sophie Toscan du Plantier who was staying on her own at her holiday house for Christmas. She usually came to Ireland on her own so this wasn’t out of the ordinary for her. Her friends and family couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt Sophie. Naturally, the police look into her husband and previous partners first. These men were ruled out fairly quickly. Luckily, police received a tip from a local shopowner about seeing a man on the bridge near Sophie’s home on the night of her murder. She later identified this man as Ian Bailey, the investigative journalist who had been reporting on this case. Was he a cold-blooded killer or just at the wrong place at the wrong time? Or was someone else to blame for this horrific slaying? Find out next week on part two. Come along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss coffee walks, Kit-Kat bars, and how important or unimportant curtains are. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of violent homicide. Robert Coombes
In the summer of 1895, brothers Robert and Nattie Coombes were having the time of their lives. The boys had been left home alone to do as they please. Their dad was away at sea and their mom had gone to visit an aunt out of town. Or at least, that’s what they told anyone who inquired as to their mother’s whereabouts. After ten days of freedom, their mother’s severely decayed body was found in the front bedroom of their home. Robert confessed to the murder, but being as he was only 13 years old, he was sentenced to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. It seems like this would be the end of Robert’s story, right? Well, he went on to live a very interesting life after Broadmoor and even saved lives. What do you think? Was Robert a cold blooded killer or a kid just trying to protect his younger brother? It's Raining...Meat? Goo? Sodium Polyacrylate?
In 1876 in Kentucky and 1994 in Washington, citizens experienced the skies raining down mysterious substances. In Kentucky, the blobs appeared to be meat, while in Washington, the blobs were translucent, gelatinous goo. In both instances, samples were collected, tests were performed, and scientists made conclusions. In the case of the blobs in Washington, scientists never could agree on what the substance is. Luckily, one resident collected a sample and has held on to it in case anyone ever wants to get to the bottom of it. In the case of the Kentucky meat shower, the samples were determined to be meat, but the source of the meat is something you would never guess. The Dardeen Family Murders
Keith and Elaine Dardeen were a well liked and respected couple in their community of Ina, IL. In November 1987, they had a 2 year old son, Peter, and Elaine was seven months pregnant with a baby girl. On November 18, police were sent to the Dardeen family home for a wellness check after Keith hadn’t shown up for work. They found three bodies all tucked into the same bed: Elaine, Peter, and a brand new baby girl. Elaine had been beaten so severely that she had gone into labor and delivered her baby who was tragically met with the same fate as her mother and brother. Keith was nowhere to be found so he immediately became the prime suspect. The next day, Keith’s body was found in a wheat field not far from the home. He had been shot, had a head injury, and his penis had been severed. It was clear that he had not committed this crime. So investigators start digging into Keith and Elaine’s lives and find…nothing. They had no enemies and no one had a single bad thing to say about them. Over three decades have passed and police are no closer to solving the case today as they were in 1987. Could this have been the work of a serial killer, a potential home buyer, or someone else entirely? Come along as Hannah and her little mom discuss spider friends, eight-tracks, and Southern Illinois. When he left, he brought a water bottle, some clothes, and his Cookie Monster puppet that he had had since childhood. When the landlord’s son and nephew went to the apartment to make sure Marty had gone, they found that a door to one of the rooms was nailed shut. They called the police who broke down the door and found several decomposing bodies in that room. They started searching for Marty, but he was difficult to track down. After about a week, police caught up to him and brought him in for questioning. He quickly admitted to murdering seven women, only five of which he knew their names. Marty’s defense focused on his mental capacity, and he underwent multiple psychiatric evaluations. Eventually, he was sentenced to one life sentence and six death sentences, however, he was later determined to be incompetent to be executed. The Enfield Poltergeist
In late August of 1977, the Hodgson family started experiencing paranormal occurrences in their home including strange knocking sounds, furniture moving on its own, and Lego bricks being thrown across the room by an invisible force. The matriarch of the family, Peggy, had contacted the police for help but when they couldn’t help her, she went to the media. This led to the home being investigated by the Society for Psychical Research (SPR). The SPR sent Maurice Grosse to investigate and he ended up investigating for over 18 months and capturing over 200 hours of audio recordings of activity in the home. Most of the activity revolved around 11 year old Janet Hodgson. Many people believed it was a hoax made up by Janet and her siblings, but over 30 individuals witnessed things in that home that couldn’t be explained away. Come along with Hannah and Adriana as they discuss this haunting, the Super Bowl half time show, scientists in ghost hunting, and what the fuck even is a Poltergeist? The Clearfield Rapist
From 1991 to 2002, there was a series of random sexual assaults in Utah and Wyoming. DNA was left at the scene of 11 attacks. Unfortunately, this DNA didn’t match any identified person in CODIS and eventually, the cases went cold. In 2017, investigators approached Dr. Barbara Rae-Venter to help solve this case through the use of familial DNA. The science had come a long way since 2002, and Dr. Rae-Venter was able to track down family members of the attacker. Ultimately, this led to the arrest of Mark Douglas Burns who admitted to these eleven attacks and three murders for which he had not even been suspected. Mark Douglas Burns was sentenced to 242 years in prison for the attacks alone. Come along with Hannah and Lainey as they discuss their favorite Scooby-Doo characters, burglary vs. robbery, and what is a second cousin? The Senseless Murder of Lauren Giddings
Lauren Giddings spent the summer of 2011 studying to take the bar exam. She had just graduated from law school in May and was planning to move in with her boyfriend soon. When her sister hadn’t heard from Lauren in a couple of days, she sent one of Lauren’s friends over to check on her, but nobody answered. The friend used a spare key to get into the apartment. Lauren’s keys, wallet, and purse were there, but Lauren was nowhere to be found. A missing persons report was filed and a search party was formed. The next morning while detectives are investigating, they smell something strange. The smell leads them to the garbage cans where they uncover the torso of a human body. Investigators discover a hacksaw in the maintenance room of this apartment building that appears to have some blood and tissue on it. Only two people have a key to this room: the owner of the building and the maintenance man. Or at least that’s what police think at first, until they find a secret third master key in a fellow law student and neighbor’s apartment. Nobody would want to hurt Lauren. So who could have done this? Her boyfriend who didn’t really want her to be moving in? Her ex-boyfriend who still had feelings for her? The maintenance man who had a key and a hacksaw? Or a fellow law school graduate who lived next door with a secret third master key? Follow along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss this horrific case, as well as, rollerblading, the bar exam, and having a saw room. The Grimes Sisters
On December 28, 1956, sisters Barbara Grimes, 15, and Patricia Grimes, 12, left their home to go see Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender” at the Brighton Theater in Chicago. When they didn’t arrive home by midnight, their mother alerted the authorities. Police officers and hundreds of volunteers searched for them for days, but the weather was brutal and searches eventually came to a halt. On January 22, 1957, the girls’ bodies were found in a ditch along the side of a road in Willow Springs, IL. Both bodies showed signs of trauma including marks, bruises, and puncture wounds to the chest. There have been some suspects over the years but there has never been enough evidence to definitively link anyone to the murders. This year will mark 70 years since the girls disappeared and police are no closer to finding their killer than they were in 1956. Did four young boys assault them and throw them out in the cold? Was it a stablehand who admitted to killing three young boys the year before? Or the dishwasher who admitted to the murders after being interrogated for hours? Follow along as Hannah and Lainey theorize and discuss the upcoming winter Olympics, horse girls, and romanticizing winter. The Mysterious Disappearance of the Sodder Children
On today’s episode of Spooky B*tch Walk, Hannah tells Bob about the mysterious disappearance of the Sodder children. On Christmas Eve 1945, the Sodder family was gathered in their home spending a cozy night together. Six of the ten Sodder children asked their parents, George and Jennie, if they could stay up late because they were having such a good time together. Jennie and George allowed this; it was Christmas Eve, after all. Around midnight, the phone rang and Jennie answered it. She saw that only one of her children was still in the living room asleep on the couch. She assumed the other five must have gone up to bed. Around 1am, Jennie was awoken by the smell of smoke. Their home was on fire and the flames were spreading fast. George and Jennie along with 4 of their children were able to escape the flames, but five of their children were still inside. Or were they? The Sodder home burnt to the ground in 45 minutes. No remains were ever found indicating that there were no other bodies in the house when it burned. There are many theories about what could have possibly happened. Were the flames hot enough to cremate all five bodies? Had they been kidnapped and the house set on fire to hide evidence? Was an angry local banker to blame for the arson? Or did the children simply run away never to contact their family again? Along the way, Hannah and Bob discuss black holes, Carole Baskin, and who can handle the most gore. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains strong language. The Ant Hill Kids
From 1977-1989, the Ant Hill Kids Cult (AKA the Holy Moses Mountain Family) operated in isolated areas of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. The leader of this group, Roch Thériault, collected followers while working at a homeopathic clinic. Roch was able to convince his followers to sell all of their belongings and sever ties with their family members and follow him. Things were fine at first, but as Roch’s drinking got worse, so did the abuse. Roch believed he was a holy healer and to prove this to his followers, he performed amateur operations on anyone experiencing any kind of illness. Obviously, this led to multiple deaths on the commune. Eventually, authorities were alerted when a child passed away due to being abused by Roch. Roch was sentenced to 18 months in jail. His followers were waiting for him when he got out and things only got worse. Cari Farver
On today’s episode of Spooky B*tch Walk, Hannah tells Lainey about the stalking of Dave Kroupa and the murder of Cari Farver. In 2012, Dave was looking for a casual relationship so he went on the dating app, Plenty of Fish. This is how he met Liz Golyar and Cari Farver. The Heartbreaking and Senseless Murder of Ajike Owens
On this week’s episode, Hannah tells Lainey about the murder of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was a mom to four beautiful children who were all under the age of 13 when she was taken from them. AJ and her children lived in Ocala, FL, in a neighborhood with a big open field to play in. All of the neighborhood kids had been playing in this field for years. Susan Lorincz lived in an apartment next to this field. She started calling police to complain about the kids being too loud and trespassing on her property by playing in the open field next to her home. It turns out that that field did not belong to Susan’s landlord so the children were allowed to continue playing there. The Tragic Death of Sema'j Crosby
On April 25, 2017, 17-month-old Sema’j Crosby was reported missing by her mother, Sheri Gordon. Approximately 30 hours later, Sema’j’s body was found under the couch in her home. The day after she was found, the home was deemed uninhabitable by the county, and the day after Sema’j’s funeral, the home burned to the ground. DCFS had been involved with this family for years and had visited the home the same day that Sema’j went missing. In 2022, there was a civil suit in which DCFS and Children’s Home and Aid were deemed negligent in this case and Sema’j’s father won $6.4 million. To this day, no one has been charged with Sema’j’s murder. If you have any information, please contact the Will County Sheriff’s Department at 815-727-8575. Losing Streak Lois: Part 2
Today’s episode is the second part of our series about Losing Streak Lois. In today’s episode, we pick up where we left off: Fort Myers Beach, FL, where a body had been found in a condo unit. This body turned out to be Pamela Hutchinson who was a beautiful, sunshine person just trying to help out a new friend when she was murdered. Luckily, there was security footage all around this condominium which police were able to obtain. That’s when they see Pam meeting Lois Riess. They also see Lois taking Pam’s car which they are able to track through highway cameras. Lois makes her way to South Padre Island where it appears she was at least thinking about murdering again. Along the way, Hannah and Lainey discuss being a bitchy spook, energy vampires, and our show recommendations. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of domestic violence and homicide. The Dancing Plague of 1518
In 1518, the strangest of plagues swept through modern day France. It wasn’t a plague of boils, swollen lymph nodes, or gangrene. No, this was a plague of dance. On July 14, 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea started dancing in the streets of Strasbourg and couldn’t seem to stop. Citizens couldn’t help but notice this woman dancing until her feet were bloody and bruised. They believed this could be a sign from God or a curse from St. Vitus. Frau Troffea danced for six days before she was taken to a shrine of St. Vitus. By then, others had started to join her and within a month, more than 400 people had been afflicted by the dancing plague and some even danced themselves to death. What could cause such strange behavior? Was this a warning from God? Demonic possession? A curse? Or a physical malady such as “hot blood”? Come along with Hannah and Bob as they discuss fridge cigs (AKA Diet Coke), the Brothers Grimm’s Snow White, and was the dancing plague just the plague from The Last of Us? Besham Brian Sugrim
On today’s episode, Hannah tells Adriana about the murders of Beshan Brian Sugrim. Brian and Bernadette met when Bernadette was only 16. At first, everything was sunshine and rainbows, until one day when Brian told Bernadette he had murdered someone. Seven years later, Brian woke Bernadette in the middle of the night to tell her he had murdered someone again. Bernadette and her children suffered abuse at the hands of Brian for years. One day, Bernadette’s daughter did what Bernadette couldn’t: she ran to a neighbor’s and asked for help. Bernadette’s daughter is the real hero of this story. If it weren’t for her courage, we may be discussing a very different case today. Along the way, Hannah and Adriana discuss how it just takes one person to make a difference and the power of love. Corruption, Fraud, and Murder on the Reservation
Today is an extra special episode of Spooky B*tch Walk because our co-host today is Hannah’s mom! Hannah tells her mom about the disappearance/murder of Kristopher Clarke (KC) and the murder of Doug Carlile. KC was last seen dropping off the company credit card at Blackstone Trucking Company on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation on February 22, 2012. Immediately, KC’s friends were suspicious of KC’s longtime friend and boss, James Henrikson, but there wasn’t enough evidence to prove anything nefarious had even occurred. Over a year later, James went into business with Doug Carlile. Just a few months later, Doug was shot and killed in his home. Luckily, the murderer left the best piece of evidence any detective could ever ask for: DNA. The person this DNA belonged to was someone who wasn’t even on police’s radar. Listen as Hannah and her mom discuss amateur criminals, the oil boom on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, and how Hannah and her mom used to be Native Americans. The Iroquois Theatre Fire
In 1903, the Iroquois Theatre opened in Chicago, IL. It was designed to be the most magnificent “temple of the drama.” It was advertised as being fireproof. On December 30, 1903, the audience members attending the matinee show of Mr. Bluebeard would learn the truth of this fireproofing. It was just a spark at first, but it spread quickly. Soon, the whole theater was on fire, and all 1,924 audience members plus 500 performers and stage crew members were panicking and trampling over each other to get out of the building. In all, 602 people lost their lives that day. The surrounding community came together to help in any way they could. Today, the Iroquois Theatre is gone and another theater stands in its place. This theater is said to be haunted. People have heard whispers in the alleyway behind the building and seen full body apparitions in the balconies during performances. Join Hannah and Lainey as they discuss fire extinguishers, identifying your significant other by only their ring, and the incredible support of Chicagoans during and after this tragic event. The School for Wayward Girls
From 1894 to 1977, a juvenile detention center operated under the guise of a school in Geneva, IL. Girls as young as 10 were sent to this facility for “crimes” including being homeless, being pregnant, being sexually assaulted, having a mental illness, etc. Many girls attempted to escape and some even died in the process. Many of them were buried on the grounds of the school. The rest of the school was torn down but the cemetery remains today. The Incredible Survival Story of Alison Botha
This episode is Adriana’s (our producer) first time being a co-host! And Hannah picked a doozy of a case to tell her. In 1994, Alison Botha was abducted, raped, brutally attacked and left for dead in the middle of nowhere South Africa. What her attackers didn’t know though is that they picked the baddest bitch to try to bring down. Alison survived and went on to share her story, and we are lucky enough to be alive at the same time as her so we can hear that story. Elisa Lam and the Cecil Hotel
On today’s episode of Spooky B*tch Walk, Hannah tells Lainey about the mysterious death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel. In 2013, Elisa Lam went on a solo adventure up the west coast of California. When she didn’t check in with her parents one day, they reported her missing. Nineteen days later, her body was discovered in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel. Hannah walks Lainey through these theories and how most of them don’t make sense. Along the way, they’ll discuss mental illness, cyberbullying, and how being kind doesn’t cost money.
