62: [On-Air Coaching] The Easiest Way To Create Videos With Chris Lane
Content is king, yes. But how do you create it consistently? That’s the magic question, isn’t it? In this episode, you’ll hear how I help clients come up with video ideas in a short amount of time. No writing, no memorizing, no stress. I talk with a lot of business owners who want to start creating videos, but get stumped by many of the aspects of putting them together. What kind of equipment do I need, how do I light it properly, what do I say? So videographer Chris Lane and I teamed up to create a video package that gives people the chance to come to a studio location, be interviewed by me and then receive edited videos they can use for their website or social media. I have found that when people are interviewed, when you ask them questions about their businesses and what they are passionate about, they open up, they are less nervous and they can very easily come up with video topic ideas during the course of our conversation. What you’ll hear is an on air coaching session I did with Chris to help him come up with ideas for his next series of videos he will release to his audience. Chris is like many of us, lots of ideas, not enough time focused on making those ideas happen. He’s really busy doing things that make money in his business. And these videos, naturally, take a backseat. Does that sound familiar? Listen as I am help him focus on how he helps his clients. The cameras are rolling, I’m grilling him with questions. And I want him to boil down his ideas to create videos that are short and impactful. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *How to come up with a number of video topics in a short amount of time *How to put together video shoots for maximum effect *How to put together ideas that will attract clients Links mentioned in this episode: *CherylTanMedia.com/Podcast *Should You Hire A Professional Videographer? *Click to join the STANDOUT with Cheryl Tan community *My Video Resources page *Sign up for my newsletter and get access to the STANDOUT Facebook community here (and get the 5-Day Media Magnet Challenge) Did you enjoy the show? 58: Become A Better Interviewer
Today, we\'re talking about a topic dear to my heart. Interviews. Or put another way, a path to creating a real connection with people you choose to bring onto your show. This is a big topic, and one I’ll be addressing more fully in other episodes. But this is a start and I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Do you use interviews for your shows? Are you interested in creating a program and are thinking about using interviews for it? I have had the honor of interviewing thousands of people. As a TV news reporter, some of the people I tried to talk with didn’t want to talk with me, and others wanted to talk too much. But over the years, I have learned some tried and true lessons about carrying out conversations with strangers that I hope will help you. In fact, I still keep in touch with a number of the people I have had the honor to interview. Creating connections with people through interviewing is such a powerful way to strengthen a relationship. I can’t stress enough how important this skill is. Remember, the goal of all of this is the show. You want to put together the very best show possible. And if you decide to use an interview format for some or all of the program, then you want the most engaging guests who have the very best information to share with your audience. If you have a good show, people will find the program and share it with their friends. And the show will get bigger. If you know someone who is putting together a show or who has said, \'I need to work on my interviewing skills,’ feel free to share this episode with them. Thank you in advance. 56: Should You Hire A Professional Videographer?
If you have been shooting videos for your business by yourself, I have a question for you: Do you have a passion to be a professional videographer or do you have a passion to share your message? The one only you can share? I wanted to bring on a very talented videographer and editor to talk about what a professional video shoot looks like, how you plan for it and when you know you’re ready to hire. He is Chris Lane and he is a videographer and editor based in Virginia Beach. We are on the same page, that when you start creating videos, you typically don’t need to start with a video production company. There are so many things you can work on on your own time. Your message, your energy, your video style. As you listen to this, I want you to think about the time you are spending. In the beginning, as you are trying to figure out your messaging, your market and your products, it’s perfectly fine to use your smartphone and basic editing skills for your videos. But when you start focusing so much on the shooting and editing because you want it to start looking better, when you are spending sooo much time on the technical aspects of the shoot when you really should be talking to clients or actually getting that content into the hands of the people who need to see it, that’s when you have to start thinking about outsourcing. That’s when you think about getting some help either with shooting your videos, editing your videos, or both. Time is money in business. When you are spending so much time on putting the videos together that you are losing money-making opportunities, that’s when you should think about hiring out. If you are interested in talking about your particular video strategy, I would love to walk you through a plan to help you successfully use videos in your business. You can learn more about my video strategy sessions here. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *When is it time to get help with your videography and editing?*What things should you think about when you are starting to shoot video on your own?*What colors look good on camera*How to prepare best for your videography experience with a pro (and it’s not what you expect)*The surprising bonus of paying for a videographer*How much can you expect to pay when working with a professional videographer?*How long should your first shoot be? 55: How To Avoid Being Nervous On Camera
I get asked this question a lot. How can you avoid being nervous on camera? And I say, nervousness is normal. You just can’t let nerves get in your way. I have had my fair share of feeling really nervous in my career as a TV news anchor, reporter and host. I remember the first time I was on live TV as a reporter. I really thought I was going to throw up. After that, it got easier. I got more confident. And then I would be placed in new situations where the nerves would return, as an anchor with a co-host, as an anchor by myself, interviewing people live on the set, or anchoring shows live on location. It was all new, scary and then, after a while, you lose the nerves and you are able to focus on getting really good at presenting on camera. That’s my hope for you. And that’s why I have compiled my best tips for battling nerves and knocking it out of the park on camera. 54: How To Look Good On A Webinar
How many of you use webinars for work? As in, you are a participant and you need to have the video turned on and people will see you, or you’re a presenter and you have to do a good job on camera. Or else. If webinars are part of your work, this episode is for you. In 2018 I am on a mission to inspire you to find your voice, show up consistently and bring your story to life on video. Online meetings, online classes and online gatherings are growing in popularity. How easy is it to connect with someone and get on Facetime? Or use the online video platform, Zoom? Or Skype? How about meeting with clients, virtually, around the world? Or how about being present for a large online learning community? Even though these meetings are convenient, that doesn’t mean these are sessions you can ignore as it relates to how YOU come across. Just because you’re at home or in a remote location doesn’t mean you won’t be seen. If you’re in your kitchen with no light and the TV blaring, other people in the room will remember that. You may be muted for the entire call, you may miss your chance to present, you may end up being a distraction. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *The 5 things you need to think about before you start your webinar (either as a participant or a presenter) *What colors look good on camera *3 bonus tips you can use if YOU are the one presenting information on a webinar Links mentioned in this episode: *The original blog post on how you can look good on a webinar *How to Look and Sound Great on Video - Checklist *Sign up for my newsletter and get access to the STANDOUT Facebook community here (and get the 5-Day Media Magnet Challenge) Did you enjoy the show? 51: How To Succeed In Sales With Matthew Kimberley
We focus quite a bit on visibility on STANDOUT, of course - on things you can do to be seen as an expert in your field. Over the past 50 episodes, we’ve talked about PR, podcasts, video marketing, content marketing and speaking, just to name a few of the topics. It’s so gratifying to get your message out to more people. But, if you’re a business owner, all that visibility doesn’t do much unless it results in sales. I’d love to get your take on this. We can discuss it in the STANDOUT Facebook community, a truly wonderful group of business owners and marketers. Click here to join it. Most people come to me to get help raising their visibility, because they feel that visibility will get them more clients and customers. It can certainly do that, and my next guest says that good marketing makes the sales job a lot easier. But what happens if that is not the result? What if the sales machine is broken? I’m thrilled today to introduce all of you to Matthew Kimberley. I have no idea where I heard of Matthew first, probably on a podcast somewhere and I immediately signed up for his email list. His emails are entertaining, motivational and I learn so much about what you need to do to be successful in sales. And remember, you don’t have a business unless you have sales. As you’ll hear in this episode, Matthew has a long history in sales. He is the former head of the Book Yourself Solid School of Coach training and is the creator of the School for Selling. This is an episode you might want to come back to, as Matthew shares quite a bit, his systematic process for creating confidence in selling, how a job as a timeshare salesman helped shape how he approaches selling today - it’s not what you think - and he gives us a checklist you can use over and over again to guarantee sales in your business. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *How to become an order taker in sales*How Matthew developed his very systematic approach to sales*The step-by-step system Matthew uses and teaches to grow sales from scratch*What needs to happen to create confidence in the selling process Links mentioned in this episode: *The School for Selling*Matthew\'s free guide: 5 things you need to do every morning to get more clients in 60 days Did you enjoy the show? 50: 6 Steps To Building A Thriving Community
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to be in a room full of almost 1,000 women. It was part of the Virginia Women’s Conference at the Virginia Beach Convention Center hosted by Senator Mark Warner. I think we filled up the entire building! The energy at the conference was incredible - especially when you looked around and thought about what these women had to do to get there. Panty hose, party dresses and pumps for a day-long Saturday event. Everyone looked incredible! I was there to moderate a workshop on how to build a thriving community. We had several hundred women joining us and we were so excited to talk with so many people about this topic. For those of you who don’t know, locally, I am one of the founders of a local group called the Women’s Forum of Coastal Virginia. And when I presented this idea, of helping other people create their own communities, their own tribes, I wasn’t sure if my group or the conference organizers would agree this was a worthy topic. But they all said yes, and we got the chance to tell our story. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *The reason we decided to create The Women\'s Forum of Coastal Virginia *How we found like-minded people to be a part of the founding team *How we make it work, since we\'re all volunteers! *The six steps we took to build this thriving community Click here to download the pdf, \"6 Steps to Building a Thriving Community.\" Links mentioned in this episode: *Interview with Todd Cochrane, the CEO of RawVoice (podcast hosting service Blubrry) *STANDOUT with Cheryl Tan Community on Facebook *The Women\'s Forum of Coastal Virginia Facebook page Did you enjoy the show? 49: [On-Air Coaching] Re-Engage Your Tribe With Resi Connell
Welcome to Episode 49, where once again I invite you to listen in on a strategy session with one of the members of my PR Pro Membership Community. I have been cheering Resi Connell on for more than a year, and today, October 4, 2017, the day this podcast episode goes live, is a big day for her. It’s the culmination of months of really hard work to bring a dream to reality. Resi is a mom, she is an educator, she loves the outdoors. She is bringing together everything she loves into one life-changing project in the Richmond, Virginia area. Today, she is opening the doors to the area’s first farm-based school - the ultimate hands-on learning environment for students. It has not been an easy journey. Not at all. Since I’ve known Resi, I have encouraged her to make connections with journalists and start doing videos to showcase the amazing space her students will get to learn in. She’s gotten media mentions and support around this project. I wanted to share our strategy session with you because it’s a lesson for all of us on the importance of connecting fully with the people who support us. Resi has been running around, finding property, raising funds, recruiting students, and now she has a bit of time to focus on letting people know about what’s been going on. 48: How To Become A Thought Leader Using Video With Shelley Smith
If you have been thinking about using video to market yourself and your business, and something has been stopping you from moving forward, you’re in luck. This episode is full of great tips. A few weeks ago, I ran a 10-Day Video Challenge. I had not done this before and I didn’t know what to expect. But it went so well, I will be running this free challenge several times a year. So you can sign up here to be notified when the challenge runs again. I want to share what I learned from this experience. First - Everybody loves a challenge. Who knew? I guess it makes sense since a challenge gets our creative and our competitive juices flowing. And people love the idea of winning prizes. Second - The challenge itself is so powerful because our community was tied to it. I gave some basics as far as topic ideas and some checklists to help you create your videos. But that was it. People posted their videos on social media, Facebook primarily, using the hashtag #STANDOUTVC and anyone could search for the videos and watch them. I loved reading the comments and seeing the encouragement from the community. It’s a form of positive peer pressure. And the last thing I learned, although I definitely knew this before, if you don’t have the right message, as well as a really clear one, creating your videos or any content for that matter becomes so much harder. The reason people dropped out is they simply didn’t know what to say. For those that kept going, having that crystal clear message helped them figure out what should be in the next video. The big winner of the 10-day video challenge gets a chance to be on this podcast. So I’m excited to introduce you, again, to Shelley Smith. You may remember Shelley from Episode 17, where she talked about the mistakes entrepreneurs make when growing their companies. If people are leaving your company, if morale is low, if you have trouble recruiting great talent, it could be a company culture problem. And Shelley fixes that issue. She is a culture rescuer. Recently, Shelley really started to embrace that messaging surrounding company culture. And her videos during this challenge were very strategic, designed to speak to people who worry about retention, morale and productivity all day long. I encourage you check them out. You can see them in the STANDOUT Facebook community. And listen to our interview, where you’ll hear how she faced her fear of the camera and created 10 videos in 10 days, how that effort is paying off big time and why she is not stopping. What you\'ll learn in this episode: *Why Shelley took the challenge*What she loved about it*How she turned the challenge into a way to advance her business*How she set up her process to create batched video content*How she used content she had already created to put together her video strategy*How she structures her videos*How she uses notes in her videos*How a clear message that focuses on culture has helped in her business*How she is becoming a thought leader*The one question she asks on surveys that has helped with her messaging - and how it can help you Links mentioned in this episode: *Shelley Smith’s YouTube channel*

This is Episode #46 of the STANDOUT podcast, where I invite you to listen in on a strategy session with one of the members of my PR Pro Membership Community. Karen Lock Kolp is an early childhood expert, a mom, and the creator of the podcast, We Turned Out Okay. She is also one of the founding members of my PR Pro online community - and I’m so thrilled to see how much she has done in our time together. Since she’s been in the community, she’s been featured in major publications, on other podcasts and on TV. Her podcast attracts an audience of highly-engaged parents. Karen faces the same problem we all do. We see the buffet of options all around us. We can do Facebook Live, we can blog, podcast and speak on stage. We can starting pinning on Pinterest or begin to grow a following on Twitter. But which one is the most effective way to attract an audience and grow a business?
