'I was Derby's Head of Performance - this is what it takes to keep a Championship team fit' (Patreon taster)
This is a shortened podcast, giving a taster of SBW on Patreon. Support SBW for as little as £3 a month to hear every DCFC podcast, along with matchday videos and loads more. www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing Chris sits down with former DCFC strength and conditioning expert Luke Jenkinson, who oversaw all aspects of first team fitness and performance under Phillip Cocu and Wayne Rooney - and was also at the club when the Rams went into administration. From fitness to nutrition and everything inbetween, Luke provides fascinating insight on the different coaching methods of Derby managers, the players whose fitness had to be managed compared to the Rams stars who could 'eat up games', as well as the fittest first teamers he worked with, the changing nature of football injuries, and plenty more. Season Preview 25/26: Rating Derby's transfers so far
We're back! Chris Parsons, Tom Martin and Anton Martin reconvene to assess Derby County's current squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. The Rams have an entirely new forward line in Carlton 'He looks like Kenzo' Morris, £5.8m US signing Patrick Agyemang, and the returning Andi Weimann - but will it be enough to see Derby compete at the right end of the Championship after last season's relegation struggles? We also cast our eyes over the usual summer topics, answer your Patreon questions, discuss the new home kit, and a couple of juicy transfer rumours currently circulating around Ebou Adams and possibly left back arrival Owen Beck. 🚨 SBW will be on Patreon-only from this season 🚨 As mentioned in this episode, for family reasons, we're scaling our output back on SBW this season - and the only place to listen to the podcast will be on Patreon. There’ll still be regular independent Rams analysis, features and interviews throughout the season - just on one platform from now on. We are, and always have been, incredibly grateful to everyone who listens. Three years after being saved... how healthy are Derby County's finances?
On the third anniversary of David Clowes' late intervention to take over Derby County and save the club from administration, Richard Cutcher chats to football finance expert Kieran Maguire to assess where the club is financially and how competitive the Rams can expect to be in the Championship. Kieran explains why David Clowes got 'more than he bargained for' when he completed his takeover of Derby County in July 2022, along with how Derby's wage budget compares to the rest of the division, how much more we'd reasonably be able to spent if we did secure that much sought-after extra investment, and how DCFC's value now compares to what the club was worth when Clowes took over. SBW Meets: Brian & Melvyn (Race Across The World)
In the first of our post-season podcasts, Chris and Tom chat to Brian and Melvyn Mole, the Swadlincote-born brothers - and diehard Derby fans - who won millions of admirers with their globe-trotting stint on BBC One's 'Race Across The World'. The duo, who spread the word about DCFC all the way to India in one of many hilarious moments from their appearance on the hit BBC show, told Chris and Tom about their Derbyshire upbringing, and watching the Rams from the Normanton End at the Baseball Ground in the 1970s as kids, when the Rams were champions of England. We also asked Brian and Mel for some insider knowledge of how the show works, how they were cast - and which Derby players past and present they think would make the best 'Race' contestants. A must listen for any Rams fans who also watched RATW! ** SUPPORT SBW ON PATREON! ** Get extra podcasts, bonus content, a welcome pack for joining and loads more benefits by supporting SBW for as little as £3 a month. Derby County Season Review, Part Two
In the second part of our Season Review, Chris, Cutch, Tom and Phil pick up in January... where the season started to go badly wrong for Derby County. We analyse what went wrong on that bleak run of seven straight defeats, pick the moments when we thought the Rams were definitely relegated, and assess the incredible turnaround masterminded by John Eustace. We also pick our Player, Signing and Unsung Hero of the Season, in what turned ended as a relief-filled season. Who were the underperforming players we're expecting more from in 25/26? Can John Eustace take his Derby side even further next year? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Derby County Season Review, Part One
In the first part of our look back on 2024/25, Chris, Tom, Cutch and Phil recall the heady optimism of August before Derby's return to the Championship and initial feelgood factor as the Rams won three of the first five games... before wins turned to draws and draws to defeats as Paul Warne's side started to slip down the table. There was early season bad officiating, Warne's divisive 'sugar on top' comments and precious little to celebrate away from home before Christmas, which would ultimately lead to the dismissal of one of Derby's longest serving managers in the new year. The SBW panel also decide Goal of the Season in this first Season Review instalment. SUPPORT SBW ON PATREON! Get extra podcasts, bonus content and more benefits for just £3 a month. SBW At The Match: Stoke City (H)
In our final regular podcast of 2024/25, join Chris and Cutch for a real-time matchday pod recorded before, during and after Derby's final day showdown against Stoke City. A day which started out with permutations, nerves and trepidation ended with mass relief as Luton's capitulation vs West Brom meant the Rams' goalless draw with the Potter secured their Championship status. We also reflect on the phenomenal recovery job John Eustace has pulled off, in saving a Derby side who were bottom of the Championship and seven points adrift in early March, before discussing our best and worst moments of the campaign... and early ambitions for 2025/26. To support SBW on Patreon, where you get an extra Derby County podcast each month, competitions, extra content and more, head over to: patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing In your bonus Patreon podcast for March, Chris sits down with Nathan Scarff, who was DCFC Head Groundsman from 2015-2018 - which includes the period when the club installed the pitch which came in for national criticism this month. Nathan told SBW what Mel Morris said to him when Derby installed their new playing surface, the 'interesting ideas' the former owner had for the Pride Park pitch, and what's caused it to deterioriate so noticeably in recent weeks. He also explained the process of maintaining an elite football pitch, the Derby manager who wanted the grass long to stifle the opposition... and his thoughts on astroturf gardens. SBW 222: NML's vision beats Baggies
After an insipid Pride Park defeat to relegation rivals Luton on Good Friday, Derby bounce back with a stunning win at the Hawthorns which ended West Brom's playoff hopes and kept the Rams just above the bottom three trap door. Cutch and Anton are joined by SBW debutant Joel Clyne to salute the superb away day in the Black Country, including a return to set piece success and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's outrageous late third goal to seal the points. How will the final two games of the season play out? Derby's fate still feels completely unknown, but we discuss the final fixtures - and which side above the Rams we could reel in. SBW 220: Swans stunt Rams resurgence
The John Eustace revival is (temporarily) halted for Derby County as Swansea edge a nervy, uneventful, drab encounter in South Wales to see off the Rams 1-0. Chris and Cutch reflect on the end of Derby's winning streak, along with the impressive Preston win which completed four wins in a row. SBW 219: Harnessing hope
We're back in the game! A sensational third straight victory sees Derby climb off the bottom of the Championship and within a point of safety, going into the final international break of the season. Chris, Cutch and Tom look back on the superb, long-overdue second away win of the season at Plymouth, before also hailing the crucial midweek win over Coventry and wondering how on earth Marcus Harness became key to the Rams' survival hopes. We hear your thoughts on what exactly has changed under John Eustace, the peculiar dynamic between Derby head coach and the club's medical staff, and the embarrassing deterioration of the Pride Park pitch. There are plenty of DCFC talking points in Ep.219 as Derby's survival hopes are rekindled. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SBW 218: Rovers reptile dysfunction
No you weren't dreaming - Derby County really did score two goals from open play and win a football match at the weekend. A jubilant Chris Parsons, Anton Martin and Chris Smith bask in a long, long overdue three points as John Eustace gets off the mark and gets one over on his former employers in the process. Can a seemingly lost Rams side use their first win of 2025 as a springboard for a survival charge? We also salute Craig Forsyth as he opened the scoring for the Rams on his 372nd competitive DCFC appearance, and wonder how on earth Derby will cope with their unprecedented injury crisis which currently has almost an entire team of players unavailable. SBW 217: Rock bottom Rams revisited
As a dismal 10th defeat in our last 12 continues Derby's woeful 2025, Chris, Cutch and Phil pick over the 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough and ask if there are any positives in this current Rams side. Phil recounts his eventful trip to the north east and back (featuring a flying cow and a raucous hen do), as we ask where this Rams currently are on the Relegation Cliche Spectrum.... and also - is this the worst Rams sides in a generation? There's analysis too on the end of David Ozoh's season and a possible return for Jeff Hendrick in another desperate attempt to breathe any life into Derby's survival hopes. ** SUPPORT THE PODCAST ON PATREON ** Get a bonus SBW episode every month, extra video content, membership perks, exclusive competitions and an invite to our private DCFC Discord group by supporting us on Patreon for as little as £3 per month. SBW At The Match: QPR (A)
Join Chris, Tom, Cutch and Anton for a trip to Loftus Road on what was felt beforehand like the optimistic start of a new Derby County era.... until the match started. A 4-0 drubbing at the hands of QPR laid bare the size of the task facing new manager John Eustace - and the handful of Rams fans we spoke to in the away end whilst recording this pod in real time were in agreement about the size of Derby's on-field problems. How many of Derby's first choice XI are actually Championship quality? Should Eustace name a new captain to inspire the Rams after this hugely deflating performance? And can Derby's new boss take any positives from the heaviest defeat of the season? All questions we attempted to ask in the away end at Loftus Road as Derby County's season sunk to a new low. SBW 215: Warne out... Eustace in?
After 871 days and 132 games, the Paul Warne era at Derby County is over. Chris, Anton and Ollie Wright discuss the highs and lows of Warne's two and a half years at Pride Park, and pay tribute to one of the few managers who's actually managed to get the Rams promoted out of any division. We also look back on the draw at Norwich, where Derby finally ended their losing streak - although there wasn't a huge amount different tactically. There was plenty to be excited about with the debut of Sondre 'Dolph Lundgren' Langas, and cause for optimism if the Rams world class disallowed goal was anything to go by. Then there's 'The Eust'. How would the managerial approach of Derby's former midfield enforcer be different to that of Paul Warne? Is £750k a fee worth paying for a manager? And how many players can we remember from his last ever game as a professional? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We look at new Derby County signings Harrison Armstrong and Sondre Langas, as well as the early signs from the returning Matt Clarke and fellow Norweigan new boy Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, before discussing once again the Rams' sorry run of defeats which could stretch to a new club record with a loss at Norwich in their next fixture. SBW 212: Worn out?
As an exhausted, injury-ravaged Derby County sink into the bottom three, Chris, Cutch and Tom attempt to keep the faith in discussing whether the Rams can pull themselves out of trouble. We analyse the damaging defeat away at Cardiff City and the key points which caused the 2-1 defeat, before addressing the growing unrest over Paul Warne's position - and how bad results may have to be before David Clowes has not choice but to act. There's plenty of transfer news to get stuck in to as well - the possible return of Matt Clarke, an acceptable fee which we'd be happy with from Brighton to lure Eiran Cashin away, Danish unknown Oscar Fraulo... and a goodbye to League One's James Collins. We say goodbye, sweet prince to Tawanda Chirewa (we hardly knew ye), discuss Paul Warne's team selection for the FA Cup exit at Leyton Orient, and hope/pray that incoming 'striking Viking' Lars-Jorgen Salvesen can provide the firepower to steer Derby away from trouble. SBW 209: WBA win, Leeds loss
As Derby County round off 2024 with a narrow defeat to league leaders Leeds United, Chris, Cutch and Tom look back on a positive pair of festive performances, following the home win over West Brom on Boxing Day. There's praise for Ebou 'The Championship N'Golo Kante' Adams, admiration of Zetterstrom's unorthodox goalkeeping, and enjoyment of Kane Wilson's latest wing back adventures, despite a 1-0 loss to a team probably destined for the Premier League next season. As Derby return to winning ways with a stunning four goal-dismantling of fellow League One promoted side Portsmouth, Chris, Phil and Chris Smith bask in the Rams' biggest win of the season - and wonder if Paul Warne's curious post-match comments after Leeds contributed to Derby's faultless display. We admire the 'penguin feet' of Marcus Harness, Kenzo's ball retention, wonder where we'd be without Ebou, and generally reflect on a much-needed three points after a series of morale-sapping late defeats. Was it a case of a point gained or two dropped against the side 21st in the Championship? We also spent a considerable amount of time discussing the advantage rule (trust us on this one), wonder how Derby will cope against Swansea without Jerry Yates, and look at the state of the rest of the division - are there any sides in the second tier who are noticeably over or under-performing? There's also, ofcourse, a recap on Cutch's appearance on 'Football Traitors', a feature on Patrick Kielty's BBC Radio Five Live breakfast show, where he successfully got one over on several Forest fans, and also a cheeky 'Categories' quiz with your host, Anton Martin. Chris, Cutch and Tom discuss the wastefulness on show against the Pilgrims, before assessing the points return from recent games, Jerry Yates' resurgence, Liam Thompson, attendances, and upcoming fixtures. Ben Gibson's headed winner minutes later, and ask what the Rams need to do to turn their fortunes around on the road. There are questions asked of Paul Warne's tactics - are we simply too easy for home teams play against? We also look at the individuals - is the Championship proving too much of a step up for some first teamers in this DCFC squad? SBW Meets: Marco Gabbiadini
For many Derby County fans, Marco Gabbiadini was one of their first heroes in the black and white shirt. A big money signing by Arthur Cox in the 1991/92 season, the former Sunderland man spent five seasons at the Baseball Ground, scoring 50 goals and helping the Rams get promoted along the way. To speak to Gabbiadini now, however, is to speak to a former footballer with very different matters on his mind. As well as discussing his favourite moments, least favourite teammates, the 'dirty, smelly' Baseball Ground, and playing under Cox, McFarland and Smith, Marco, now 56, spoke candidly about his own health - having been diagnosed with a heart condition this year which means he's awaiting a triple heart bypass. Chris's chat with Marco is both a nostalgic trip back to the mid-1990s, and also a unique personal insight into the current wellbeing of a hugely popular figure in recent DCFC history. SBW 193: Rovers reality check
The Rams' return to the Championship is one featuring a brutally harsh lesson in second tier football as Blackburn ease past Derby County 4-2 at Ewood Park in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Chris is joined by Chris Smith and broadcaster Martin Fisher to pick the bones out of Derby's heavy opening weekend defeat. Are the Rams currently physically fit enough for the rigours of the division? Will Warne change the shape of the defence after the second half capitulation? And how did we rate the debutants Ozoh, Goudmijn, Jackson and Osborn? There's also an update on the Jacob Zetterstrom saga, the search for a new striker and the possibility of Premier League loans, and discussion of realistic aims for the season. If you offered Derby 21st place now, would you take it...? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SBW 192: The Championship Roundtable
In our second preview episode ahead of the 2024/25 season, we invited three fellow Championship podcasters onto SBW to get a broader view of the battles at both ends of the division this year. Burnley fan Natalie Bromley, from the 'No, Nay Never' podcast, was our guest as she told us who Scott Parker's side will be competing with to secure promotion next May. Also returning to the 'Roundtable' pod was Jake Smith, Porstmouth fan and broadcaster on Pompey's 'Express FM', who told us whether Derby's fellow League One promoted side can cut it after spending 12 years away. Our third guest is Justin Peach, co-host of 'The Second Tier' podcast, who gave us a wider view of the teams and players to watch in the Championship this season. Are there three worse teams than Derby? We hear the panel's relegation predictions. Will it be the relegated Premier League sides dominated the promotion battle? We also guess who'll be fighting it out at the top. And who'll be chasing Blackburn's Sammy Szmodics as the division's top scorers? There's plenty to discuss in our Championship Roundtable podcast. The SBW panel discuss a potential midfield trio of Kenzo Goudmijn, Ebou Adams and David Ozoh, hail the imminent signing of giant goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom, and praise the savvy capture of Ben Osborn. Will Derby's new attacking signings - Kayden Jackson and Jerry Yates - provide enough firepower to stave off the threat of relegation? SBW 186: Frantic Fratton thriller
After catching their breath, Chris and Anton are joined by a soggy Richard Cutcher, fresh from his trip to the south coast, where Derby gained a valuable point - and avoided defeat - in the crucial top two clash at Portsmouth. We analyse the main talking points (including the fox on the pitch), and ask if Pompey was the game where Corey Blackett-Taylor finally arrived as a Ram. There's yet more praise for Ebou Adams and his incredible mental fortitude to play whilst fasting for Ramadan, another inevitable mention for the fantastic Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, and our latest attempt at wondering how many more points Derby need to secure promotion. SBW 184: Complete Cobblers
With the chance to go seven points clear of third place in League One going begging, Chris, Tom and Phil look back on a sorry afternoon at Sixfield, where Derby slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Northampton Town. We analyse the sitters missed, Sonny Bradley's red mist, and the latest possible addition to the injury list. Are Warne's methods leading to more muscle strains, or is it just coincidence and bad luck? There's also analysis of our promotion rivals' run-ins, points predictions for Easter, and we definitely answer the top Rams talking point from the past week... do beans belong on a fry-up plate or in a separate pot?
