Mark Carney’s government has announced a massive $4.7 BILLION VIA Rail deal for 313 new passenger cars, proudly promoting Canadian manufacturing, nearly 700 jobs and more than $1.6 billion in economic benefits.But then I checked what other countries are paying.And that's where this announcement gets VERY interesting.Portugal recently ordered hundreds of rail cars from the SAME manufacturer, Alstom, while also getting Portuguese manufacturing capacity and hundreds of jobs. The headline cost per rail car is dramatically different.Then we looked at passenger rail contracts in the Czech Republic.And Connecticut.And suddenly one question becomes impossible to ignore:What premium are Canadian taxpayers paying to have these trains manufactured in Canada?Because Canada's roughly $4-billion rolling-stock portion works out to approximately $12.8 million for each of the 313 cars on a simple average.
