#82 Building a Team of True Believers: Creating a Purpose-Driven Team United by Shared Vision, Deep Conviction, and Organized by their Individual Strengths. A conversation with Jared Wilson
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. The best teams are not assembled by gathering the most impressive individual résumés and assigning them work. They are built in two deliberate movements. First, identify and recruit true believers—people who genuinely share the vision, goal, purpose, mission, and desired outcome. Second, organize those believers according to their distinct talents and abilities so that each contributes where they are strongest to achieving that shared end. Conviction is the qualifying condition for membership; talent is the logic of arrangement. Reverse the order—arrange by talent first and hope belief follows—and the team becomes a collection of capable people pulling in incompatible directions. The leader’s first responsibility is not to issue tasks but to articulate a vision compelling enough that the right people choose to believe in it, and to recruit selectively against that belief rather than against credentials alone. The second is diagnostic: to see clearly what each believer is best at and to place them there. Recruiting for conviction is slower and more discriminating than staffing for availability, and it will feel inefficient to any organization that measures itself by how quickly seats are filled. But a team of true believers, each working at the height of their talent toward one shared outcome, is the only configuration that reliably produces results no directive could have compelled. Assemble the believers first; arrange the talent second; and the team will pursue the outcome as if it were their own—because, by then, it is.Why Teach Me to Fish? #79 The Standard: No Secrets, No Shortcuts, No Excuses. Just discipline, doing the little things right and NoDaysOff of course. A Conversation with Coach Josh Saunders of Robinson Flag Football.
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. This episode features a deep-dive conversation between Matthew Leclair and Josh Saunders, the coach of the highly successful Robinson High School flag football team. They discuss the culture of excellence that has led the program to 11 state championships, including 10 consecutive titles, and a career record of 301-34 for Coach Saunders.Key Themes & TakeawaysThe Power of "The Standard": The core philosophy of the Robinson program is centered on doing ordinary things exceptionally well consistently (1:18 - 1:54). Rather than chasing flashy plays, the team focuses on fundamentals like catching the ball and pulling flags (55:14 - 56:16).Preparing for Adversity: Coach Saunders emphasizes creating an environment where players can experience and learn from failure during practice. This ensures that when games get difficult, the team relies on "muscle memory" rather than hoping to just "rise to the occasion" (0:40 - 1:16; 1:02:58).Peer Leadership & Accountability: The program shifts responsibility to team captains, who are empowered to hold their teammates accountable. This peer-driven culture allows the team to handle high-pressure moments, such as navigating injuries to key players, by having others step up and support one another (1:06:26 - 1:07:27).Building Relationships: The video highlights how the program builds lasting bonds not only with players but also with families. Even after players graduate, these relationships continue, fostering a community of "alumni parents" and former athletes who stay connected to the program (1:57:31 - 1:58:20).Beyond Football: Throughout the conversation, Matthew Leclair—who works with military training and leadership—draws parallels between the Robinson flag football culture and high-stakes military discipline. They discuss the importance of intentionality, preparation, and leaving nothing to chance (16:04 - 16:09; 2:31:51).Legacy and FutureLooking ahead, Coach Saunders remains focused on continuous improvement and "widening the gap" between his team and the competition, while also helping grow the sport of flag football nationally through initiatives like Team USA and a forthcoming book on his coaching methods (2:20:11 - 2:22:53).Why Teach Me to Fish? #77 Building Leaders on Purpose: Why Great Organizations Don't Leave Leadership Development to Chance. A conversation w/ Sam Diehl
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. This episode of Teach Me to Fish features a deep dive into intentional leader development within the military. Hosted by Matthew Leclair, the conversation centers on the philosophy that great organizations do not leave leadership development to chance.Key Discussion Points:The Power of Mentorship and Counseling: The guest, Colonel Sam Deal, emphasizes that leader development is the most effective way to solve an organization's biggest problems (0:06 - 0:21). He highlights that counseling is not just a procedural requirement, but a tool for understanding subordinates' strengths, weaknesses, and motivations to build trust.Practical Leadership Culture: The discussion shifts to creating a culture of excellence, noting that "words whisper, but actions thunder" (1:33, 38:09). Leaders are encouraged to be visible, provide clear standards, and act as models for their teams (0:54 - 1:13).Managing Field Grades: A significant portion of the episode (59:00 - 1:06:00) addresses the often-neglected professional development of field-grade officers (Majors and above). The speakers discuss the shift from being a tactical problem-solver to becoming a strategic, communicative teammate who can operate with autonomy and trust.Normalization of Deviance: The host and guest analyze the concept of "practical drift"—where small, innocuous deviations from standards eventually lead to more dangerous failures (1:53 - 2:20). They argue that leaders must coach and hold others accountable to prevent the erosion of discipline (1:11:00 - 1:12:30).The "Team of Teams" Approach: Colonel Deal shares his experience on the importance of building connective tissue between different units to facilitate cooperation, rather than competition, among staff and subordinate leaders (1:01:40 - 1:03:15).Core Takeaway:Leadership development is a continuous, everyday responsibility. It requires personal investment, the willingness to have difficult conversations, and a commitment to helping every member of an organization reach their maximum potential (33:05 - 33:15, 1:29:40 - 1:30:00).Why Teach Me to Fish? #73 Culture IS Combat Power, The Quiet Strength of Leaders who build Trust in the ranks. A conversation w/ Mike Kim @the_michaelkim
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. This episode of Teach Me to Fish features Major Michael Kim, a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer (formerly an Infantry Officer), discussing the intersection of culture, trust, and combat power in leadership. Drawing from his time in Tiger Company and his experiences on brigade staff, he reflects on how authentic leadership and teamwork are foundational to unit success.Key Takeaways & Lessons:The Power of Informal Leadership: Major Kim highlights that a leader's attitude is infectious. After a moment of professional regret involving an unauthorized "zonk" during a brigade run (53:30 - 58:20), he learned to wield his influence carefully to foster loyalty and trust toward commanders.Staff Work as Morale Builder: Contrary to the belief that staff work isn't "sexy," he explains how well-executed, thorough staff planning directly impacts soldier morale and training efficiency (0:47 - 1:05, 50:45 - 53:00).Teamwork as a Force Multiplier: He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the group's success over personal gain, citing his experience on brigade staff where peers went out of their way to mentor and rehearse one another for success (2:43 - 3:26, 103:32 - 104:40).Empowering Lower Echelons: To build readiness, leaders must avoid over-centralizing control. He advocates for empowering team and squad leaders to take ownership of training, noting that leaders must be willing to "pay the price" of their time and effort to support their people (1:16:11 - 1:17:15, 126:22 - 127:14).Servant Leadership: Major Kim’s mantra—"I’ll pick up the phone no matter what"—symbolizes his commitment to being a reliable teammate and leader, willing to sacrifice his own comfort to support those he serves (11:27 - 13:20).The Importance of Context: A significant point of advice for senior leaders is to provide context. He explains that junior leaders and soldiers often don't understand the "why" behind orders unless senior leaders explicitly share the purpose and intent behind their decisions (133:40 - 134:06, 142:43 - 144:03).Major Kim also shares his emotional journey of transitioning from the infantry to a Foreign Area Officer, describing it as a difficult "breakup" that forced him to reflect on the balance between his commitment to the Army and his family life.MAJ Kim is a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer serving at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan. MAJ Kim is conducting In-Region Training where he is building regional expertise in military, political, economic, and cultural dynamics throughout the United States Central Command area of responsibility. He supports CENTCOM operational objectives by participating in joint and international military exercises, coordinating senior leader visits, assisting DAO activities as required, and representing DoD equities in a U.S. Embassy environment.Michael was born and raised in Katy, Texas. He joined the Army in May 2014 after graduating from the United States Military Academy as an Infantry Officer, where he received degrees in both Economics and Operations Research. His first assignment was 4th Brigade 25th Infantry Division (Airborne), where he held a variety of positions: Dismounted PL, Heavy Weapons PL, Reconnaissance PL, HHC XO, and Assistant S3. During this time, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Why Teach Me to Fish? Catch someone a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed their family for life. #6-7 Making Memes Pages Great Again. Same goes for good leadership. w/ @tropiclightmeme. What Soldiers think about good leaders and what brings the best out of them.
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. In today’s episode, you will hear directly from a Soldier. And not just your random Soldier, but one who understands what 1,000s of Soldiers are thinking and saying every day. One who runs several meme pages, and our local favorite @tropiclightmeme. Great leaders are not born, they are developed over time. Learning from both good and bad leadership. Listen to the stories our Soldiers are seeing from some of the best and worst examples of leadership. We hope you enjoy today’s conversation with @tropiclightmeme. Key topics covered include:•The purpose of Tropic Light Meme (0:05-0:59, 6:42-7:14): The meme page aims to showcase the positive aspects of the Army and counteract the common negativity found in other unit-related meme pages. The creator started it to share a different, more positive experience than what they encountered at their previous duty station.•The importance of positive experiences and good leadership (0:29-0:36, 2:06-2:18, 3:17-3:30, 36:40-37:14): The interviewee emphasizes that strong leadership, valuing families, providing quality training, and offering purpose are crucial for soldiers to feel motivated and choose to stay in the Army.•The origin and growth of Tropic Light Meme (9:41-11:39): The page was created because the 25th Division lacked a unit-specific meme page. It gained significant traction during a JPMRC exercise when administrators shared real-time content and started "Almost Friday" photo submissions.•Impact of social media on morale (15:08-16:00): The ability for soldiers to use their phones during exercises like JPMRC significantly boosted morale, allowing them to share experiences and connect, which indirectly led to the rise of pages like Tropic Light Meme.•Personal motivation for joining the Army (1:00-1:20, 19:33-22:20): The interviewee comes from a military family with a strong history of service, including a great-grandfather killed in action in WWII. A vivid childhood memory of 9/11 further cemented their desire to serve.•Best experiences in the Army so far (1:22-2:05, 22:45-25:20):•Jungle School (1:25-1:39, 22:47-23:19): Described as a significant and positive experience with valuable training.•Being stationed in South Korea (23:20-24:08): Witnessing the geopolitical divide and the importance of defending democracy.•Future goals and personal growth (25:21-29:18): The interviewee aims to earn their Ranger tab (25:30-25:33), which they see as a way to set themselves apart, gain leadership experience, and further develop self-belief. They also share how overcoming a personal weakness in running, driven by inspiring leaders, has boosted their confidence. Why Teach Me to Fish? Catch someone a fish, feed them for a day. #55 The Best Decision I’ve made so far. My first year as a West Point Cadet. w/ Ryan Leclair
Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. Today’s episode is with Ryan Leclair. She will talk about her first year at West Point, how it measured up to her expectations, the first two weeks of “Beast”, what she has learned so far, and what she is looking forward to the most in her second year. She’ll tell a few stories and hint at what’s driving her and her teammates.Key discussion points include:•Expectations vs. Reality (3:32-4:40): Ryan shares that her expectations for West Point were largely met due to prior conversations with family members who attended, but she didn't have many specific expectations, preferring to just be ready to start. She also mentions that Beast, while difficult, was not as bad as people had hyped it up to be.•Beast Barracks (Basic Training) (6:35-8:42): Ryan details the rigorous routine of Beast, including early mornings (4:45 AM), physical training (PT), and briefs. The first half focuses on teaching cadets how to be a cadet, including memorizing rules and getting uniforms, while the second half involves army training like land navigation and FTX (Field Training Exercise). She was surprised that they didn't expect cadets to know anything beforehand, only to try their hardest (9:07-9:16).•Volleyball and Academics (9:26-11:35): Ryan explains how being on the volleyball team meant leaving Beast early for practices and traveling for games, which significantly impacted her ability to attend a full week of classes during the first semester.•End of the First Year (14:00-15:56): The end of the academic year involved term-end exams (finals) and "grad week," which focused on drilling and packing. This period saw a significant slowdown in academic work as everyone prepared for their summer training, transitioning into their roles for the next year.•Field Experiences and Leadership Lessons (16:48-26:07, 27:06-30:07): Ryan recounts a chaotic but fun FTX experience involving a surprise "attack" and defending a house. She learned that summer trainings are primarily for leaders to develop their leadership style (27:33-27:56). A key takeaway from a 101st Airborne Division soldier was the importance of leaders "going to bat for your guys" (28:17-29:02), emphasizing that soldiers will have their leader's back if they know their leader cares about them and the mission.•Advice for Future Leaders and Cadets (35:05-35:50, 39:37-41:17): Ryan shares advice given to her: don't expect to change everything immediately in the army; instead, observe, do your job, and communicate with your soldiers. Her main advice for those considering West Point or military service is that it will be hard, but to “be where your feet are," stay in the moment, and keep going (40:43-41:17).Why Teach Me to Fish? Catch someone a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed their family for life. Our purpose is to help Leaders better understand what drives People to serve.
