Episode 50: Chad Ramsey: Building a Multi-Generational Mission Strategy at Any Church Size

In this milestone 50th episode of the Tennessee Golden Hour, hosts Matt Tullos and Beth Moore welcome Chad Ramsey, pastor of First Baptist Smithville, to talk about how an average-sized church can develop a thriving, multi-generational missions strategy.Chad shares the 101/201/301 framework he developed through his Doctor of Ministry project — a tiered approach that helps everyone from first-time volunteers to seasoned mission travelers find their place in God's mission. From quarterly community days offering oil changes, school supplies, and food baskets, to domestic partnerships in Colorado, Boston, and Detroit, to international church planting work in Cologne, Germany, Chad walks through how each level of engagement builds on the last.Key takeaways from this conversation:→ You don't need a paid missions pastor — First Baptist Smithville does it all with volunteers→ Start local, start simple, and let momentum build over time→ Shorter, more frequent trips (2–3 days) often work better than week-long summer trips→ Train your people in gospel conversations through hands-on experience, not just classroom settings→ Look at who's in your congregation and what God has gifted them to do — then build from there→ Use Sunday morning interviews instead of Sunday night reports to share mission stories with the whole churchSince Chad arrived nine years ago, the church has grown from around 125 to 325–350 in weekly attendance — and he credits much of that growth to a church culture shaped by mission and service.Whether you're a pastor of 50 or 500, this episode is packed with practical, replicable ideas for mobilizing your church.Resources and contacts mentioned:Beth Moore, TBMB Missions Team — [email protected] demographic reports — contact Lewis McMullen through the state conventionCHARM Ministries, Townsend, TNTennessee Baptist Ministry Centers (Copper Basin, Tazewell)#TennesseeGoldenHour #Missions #ChurchGrowth #ActsOneEight #TennesseeBaptist #LocalMissions #ChurchOutreach #MultiGenerationalMissions

Episode 32: Leighann McCoy- the most wonderful, terrible, amazing, awful thing ever!

Join us for a heartfelt conversation with Leighann McCoy, who shares her 38 years of experience as a pastor's wife, ministry leader, and author. In this episode of The Tennessee Golden Hour, Leighann opens up about:The joys and challenges of ministry lifeHer battle with cancer and deepened faithParenting prodigals with graceAnd her passion for equipping churches in prayer ministry. After 38 years of ministry at Thompson Station Church, Leighann McCoy is embracing a new season of life following her retirement in January 2024. In a recent interview on the Tennessee Golden Hour with hosts Matt Tullos and Beth Moore, McCoy reflected on her decades as a pastor's wife, prayer ministry leader, and author while offering candid insights about spiritual warfare and family trials."Being a pastor's wife is like the most wonderful, terrible, amazing, awful thing ever," McCoy said, describing the unique challenges of ministry life. Having served alongside her husband Tom McCoy at Thompson Station Church, she experienced the full spectrum of church growth—from eight members meeting in a converted honky-tonk to leading a thriving congregation.McCoy highlighted loneliness as one of the greatest challenges for ministry spouses. "Any kind of separation feels a little bit lonely, and all of leadership has a little bit of that sense to it," she explained. Though developing close relationships within the church community proved difficult, McCoy found purpose in writing and deepening her relationship with God during periods of isolation. As the founder of Prayer Clinic ministries, McCoy developed practical resources to help churches establish vibrant prayer cultures. What began as informal prayer meetings with women in the early years of her church evolved into a structured approach to prayer discipleship. Through Prayer Clinic, McCoy created tangible tools including scripture-based prayer cards and tracking systems to guide believers in consistent, faith-filled prayer."The biggest thing about prayer is not what you're saying, it's what you're believing," McCoy emphasized. Her program equips church members to lead prayer ministries without requiring extensive training—only a genuine belief that God answers prayer. "We give out bracelets that say 'God's got this,' so they remember that no matter what's going on, God's got it."McCoy's teaching on spiritual warfare stems from personal experience with significant challenges, including a battle with cancer diagnosed the same week she signed her first major publishing contract for a book titled "Spiritual Warfare for Women.""I said to my prayer partners, 'I don't know what is going to happen with this cancer, but whatever happens, whether I live or I die, I want it to be done to the glory of God,'" she recounted. Though initially diagnosed with stage one colon cancer that was surgically removed, the disease later recurred with a tumor in her liver.During this difficult season, McCoy was also navigating what she calls her "prodigal story"—a painful period when her daughter entered an abusive relationship and rejected her parents. "She gave us a pink slip as parents," McCoy said, noting the situation forced her to confront cracks in her own faith when "God didn't behave the way the God I had believed in was supposed to behave."This experience has led to her latest project—an online course called "Perfecting the Art of Parenting Our Prodigals," which she developed with input from her now-reconciled daughter. The course, scheduled for release on June 2 to coincide with the World Day of Prayer for Prodigals, aims to help parents through similar journeys with practical, compassionate guidance.

Episode 26: Where in the World is BCM?

Rodney Norvell has been at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) for 11 years, leading students on journeys of faith and service. One of his favorite things as a BCM Minister is taking students on mission trips. Rodney first heard about ministry opportunities in the Philippines from missionaries connected to UT and Carson-Newman alumni. They spoke of their work in Batangas City, where they established a Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) for Batangas State University. "One of my favorite things about being Baptist is we are a family and we are a big network that cooperates together," Rodney shared. This connection grew personal when Rodney’s son, Jacob, chose Batangas City for his own mission work. Inspired by his son’s experience, Rodney felt called to take a team from UTK to the Philippines.Benji Mendoza, a UTK student with Filipino heritage and a heart for ministry helped lead this endeavor. Benji’s journey wasn’t straightforward. Called to ministry at 15, he initially ran from it, choosing to study kinesiology with plans for a career in physical therapy. "I came into college running away from the Lord," Benji admitted. Personal losses led him to resent the Lord, and he drifted from his faith. But halfway through his first semester at UTK, the pull of the Holy Spirit and the encouragement of his youth pastor back home led him to BCM. There, he found community, accountability, and a renewed sense of purpose. "Without BCM, I probably would have been so far down the hole of just worldly desires and fleshly desires," he reflected. The impact of the Cooperative Program and the Golden Offering for Tennessee Missions is undeniable. They not only fund these transformative experiences but also support the long-term spiritual journeys of students like Benji Mendoza, who are poised to become the next generation of Christian leaders. For more inspiring stories like this, tune into The Tennessee Golden Hour Podcast.
