Please message us! Christy Barker: Post Arrest Decisions

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Christy Barker's first interview dropped months ago.  She discussed her ideas of the ideal prosecutor / investigator relationship prior to arrest.Post-arrest, that relationship needs to (and will) change.  Today she discussed what she, as a prosecutor of violent crime for three decades, would like from the investigators after they arrest a killer. The short version is this:  If you're an investigator, you do not prosecute cases.  It's not your decision to prosecute, or to decide the strategy of that prosecution.  This is objectively the design of the US Criminal Justice System.  If you are questioning this, you need to go learn your system. Therefore, what's the point of collecting facts if you're doing it in such a way that the person you believe did the crime cannot be charged effectively?  Sure, you can take out a warrant.I arrested the killer!  Call the press!  Fucking hero cop over here! Then you don't answer the phone when prosecutor calls.  She needs discovery.  He needs leads followed to get ahead of plausible defenses.  She needs alibi witnesses interviewed.  You ain't answering.  You got an arrest, so bug off and do yo job, lawyer. If that's where you're at, don't cry when the case gets dismissed.  Don't tell the victim's mama you did everything you could.  Be real.Learn from Christy how to manage arguably the most important time of a case - post-arrest.-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!  Substack contains true stories from my perspective.  Follow / subscribe on your favorite platform to continue to get my perspective and those of my interviewees!!!THANK YOU!https://www.facebook.com/share/1H5EuzAjrH/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://substack.com/@chase718403

Please message us! Federal Investigations - How to Join, What to Expect

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue. As a city police officer I attended multiple training events on FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center).  I worked, as I've said, on the USMS Regional Fugitive Task Force.  I also worked quite a bit with DEA and ATF while in narcotics, and had some workings with FBI and US Secret Service. During training to become a fed, our class was mixed with other agencies and shared living quarters and the cafeteria with thousands of people from dozens of other agencies.  If you've listened you know I'm a talker, so I was chatting with these folks. After completing that, I've worked with most every agency in some way shape or form - city, state, and federal. No, I'm not flexing, and I hope it doesn't come off as a flex that I simply worked with people.  There are very high functioning people and very low functioning people with all these same experiences.I say it so say that I can speak knowledgably on what different agencies do, what their training is like and what the atmosphere is like at the agency.  I can also speak to the hiring process and qualifications from firsthand experience. If you are considering transition to federal law enforcement, give a listen to decide what agency will be right for you!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!

Narcotics - Down N Dirty Guide for Patrol and Narcs!

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Once I hit the streets a lifetime ago, I quickly realized my strengths and weaknesses.  One thing I could do consistently was spot in progress crime.  Whether that means a car out of place, a guy changing how he walks when he sees me or an open window in January, I noticed change.  This allowed me to regularly stop the "right" people - those doing crime - and put them in jail.I was called almost daily by our city narcotics unit to stop cars, and when an opening came available, they asked me to put in.My Sergeant at the time laughed at me when I told him I'd put in, telling me it was too soon in my career and I wouldn't get an interview.  A month later, I was growing my beard and driving a rickety shitbox in plain clothes. This episode will provide patrol with the method that worked for me to get off patrol and into what I enjoyed.  Towards the end of my time on patrol, I was unhappy going to work.  Narcotics was fun most days.It will also provide an outline of narcotics investigative techniques that worked for me.  With proactive investigations your imagination (and law and policy) are the limit, but there are some normal methods that are tried and true. Please share what I missed on "That LEO Guy" Facebook via comment or message so we can get out the good word and help our LEO community to grow and succeed!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!

Grossman (US Army - Retired) at a class in South Georgia over a decade ago.  We were both students in a shooting / fighting transition class.  He signed his book for me and wrote a nice personal note.As a former Marine, I heard him speak several times.  Col. Grossman regularly speaks with troops headed to combat.  He has authored almost two dozen published books, most famously On Combat and On Killing.Lt. Col. Grossman speaks in depth on the issue of sleep in the law enforcement and military communities, and the lasting effects that come with it.Thank you, sir, for coming on - it was my honor to speak with you (and Charlie, of course) and help you spread the good word.-LEOAbout the Colonel | Grossman AcademyWelcome to Grossman on Truth - Grossman on Truth Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!

Use of Deadly Force Investigations with Robert Santoro 2 of 2: Deep Dive

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Happy Friday!During the interview released Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Robert went into a general overview of use of deadly force investigations.During this interview we will go further into the topic. The knowledge you take away from these two episodes could save your career, freedom and financial security.  Read and understand the case law linked in the previous description. And once again and most importantly - bring this to someone you trust to test us.  The salty old Sergeant that has been puttering around since the '80s and did some years on SWAT.  The lieutenant that had three shootings as a young patrolman.  Ask them if they were mentally prepared for what followed the incident and if our discussion is accurate regarding the factors to determine legality and what follows the shooting. Not only will building your knowledge base protect you post-shooting, it will allow you to act more decisively at the time of the gunfight.  It will help you prepare for the operation that leads to the incident.Know the law, know the policy, succeed. Use of Deadly Force Investigations with Robert Santoro 1 of 2: Learn from a man who spent years investigating OIS

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Between homicide investigations, homicide supervision and state level investigations, Robert has spent considerable years collecting facts following violent crimes.  If you wear a badge and carry a gun, there is a chance that at some point you will pull the trigger while aiming at a human.  Doing this without a justifiable reason is a crime - aggravated assault, attempted murder, murder.Doing this within law and policy is deemed "justified" - kind of like that bad TV show where the cop in the cowboy hat shoots someone every episode and then says, "It's justified."Having investigated many officer-involved deadly force encounters, Robert is highly qualified to discuss the legal standards involved in his investigations, case law, and generally what to expect in the hours and days following your incident. After you pull the trigger is not the time to find out if you have to give a statement immediately, timing of report writing, and generally what the investigators will be looking at.  No surprises needed on the most traumatic and pivotal day of your career. As always, you are encouraged to listen with a critical ear.  If someone you work with has had one or multiple officer-involved shootings, encourage them to listen and confirm accuracy.  Relevant Case Law:GRAHAM v. Close Quarter Battle - Train and Survive!

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue. If you carry a gun to work - police & military, I'm looking at you - you've been trained in CQB.  Were you trained well?  Perhaps.  Were you trained badly?I have been. Although CQB is subjective, we can learn from the mistakes and blood of others.  We don't have to get blood on our own hands due to poor (or lack of) tactics.Unfortunately, most established units that have a way of doing things will not change until they see the failure themselves.I'm passionate about CQB.  I've done an episode on complacency because I've seen it, and it's overwhelmingly visible in some CQB situations.Let's get thinking about our tactics.  Are the tactics we're using just good in training, or will they work on the two-way range?  Are we training in a way that encourages target identification and reactions?  Are we building training scars? The answer is yes, we are developing training scars. All training will come with some level of scarring, and we have to constantly adjust.  Become conscious of what you're doing, and be humble enough to learn from someone doing it better and personally evolve.Stay smart, think fast, stay alive and keep your friends alive through a change of CQB mindset!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!

    LEO's Unpopular Opinions

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Law enforcement is generally pretty subjective and we as LEOs are given ample discretion on how we perform our duties.Over the last few years, I've seen some LEOs rise, I've seen LEOs fall.  Same with attorneys on both sides, jailors, etc.  Heck, my original Chief of Police got federally indicted while I was working there and served years in prison. Some of these opinions are likely to keep you out of hot water.  Some I hope to guide your career into the loving hands of safety, longevity and prosper.  Some may keep a co-worker alive.  LEO is always hoping a chief listens, and an episode changes the face of an agency for the better - making it better at serving the public, its employees, and instilling public trust. If you don't like my opinions on grooming standards, pay, and the risk of risky group text threads, let me know your opinion.  Or just do what everyone does over these holiday dinners when politics come up - explain to me why you're right, I'm stupid, and I shouldn't be allowed to weigh in!Stay safe, stay warm!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!

Intelligence Driven Policework - How to Make it More than a Catchphrase

Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Over the past couple decades, I've seen a shift from more "old school" police tactics to a desire by upper management to utilize intelligence led AKA intelligence driven policework. What this means from 1,000 feet up is often similar - using various types of intel to do the job better. The way it is applied on the ground varies greatly.  How is intel being collected?  Once collected, how is it being used?  IS it being used?  Is it becoming stale through lack of use, then used later when no longer accurate?  Who is the intel available to, and do those officers and investigators know how to access it?I spent several years as a Human Intelligence Collection (HUMINT) Team Leader in the military.  Many of the same principles apply, with similar but different goals.  Take from my lessons learned on how to improve the intel collection and dissemination in your agency.  Transition from sub-par collection and disconnection to creating action (search warrants, arrest warrants, other valuable investigative steps).Once the vision changes from upper management and middle management and officers buy-in, the whole culture of the agency is likely to evolve.  Targeted enforcement on criminals > Random enforcement actions on everyoneFind the 10% doing 90% of the crime, and the game changes.-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!
