  1. Borogroves (con Coda Lamentissia)

Our first band, Manuel and the Gardeners, was a learning experience on almost every level. That we even had any following, given that we barely knew how to play, and our original songs were often beyond the scope of the band's ability, is a testament as much to our enthusiastic all-in…

  4. The Friendly Ghost by The Adverbs

Is it a ghost story? Strange things happen out here in the West, but people mostly attribute them to the ceaseless wind and the sounds and stirrings that it swirls up. Who's to say? Johnny-Verb: word-writin' and bass-playin' Joey-Verb: all the other -in's The Friendly Ghost Watched 'em don their...

  7. Love Can Be

Love has been done to death. And yet, it seems there are still new ways to look at it. Here's one (words 'n bass by Johnny, all the other bits by Joey): Love can be Thin Dim Stretched Slim Tight Trim Kept In Love can be Fat Wide Unctious Sly Fraught Tried Taken For a ride Love can be Pivotal Soft...

  9. Dark Matter

What's everywhere and can't be seen or experienced or even undeniably proven to exist but must be there or we'd all implode into nothingness? No, not nice taxis (though there's still no proof they they exist either),,,it's dark matter people! The glue that holds the very universe together and...

  10. A Bit Too Fast by The Adverbs

A more thoughtful and cerebral meditation on what it means to really live; how to experience life to the fullest measure. But let's not get crazy... John made the words and plays some fine bass, and Joe does the rest. A Bit Too Fast Filter tip Lets the dark stuff slip Golden sheen From a magazine...

  11. Murder In Silver Lake

A bit heavier sound for your Adverbs, and a somewhat darker theme than usual. The scene is set south of the border and just east of Hollywood. An eccentric and oddly charismatic preacher and his equally curious wife. Things happen. John stomps the bass and wrote the story, Joe whoops lower than...

  12. Basswards by The Adverbs

Speaking of Basswards, the Adverbs creative process did a complete turnabout with this effort; John Jehovah Jeronimo Adverb sent me, Joseph Jacob Jingleheymer Adverb, some lyrics first, and then I cobbled together some sounds and yowling around them. Sounds positively magical, don't it? There may...

  13. Lumber Sweats by The Adverbs

...so, John does the word-writin' and bass-playin'; Joe does the everything-else-in'. And now, a much-needed song about wood. Lumber Sweats Sawn Quartered and drawn Right now Ripped Barkless and stripped Right now And the sun burns down On the rusty land From the scrubbin' pines To the hardwood...

  14. Buster Brown by The Adverbs

By way of a disclaimer, i have been asked to include the following statement: "John claims that he intended to write some highly enlightening lyrics, but "sometimes words just sneak up and bite you on the ass"". You have been forewarned. To be kind, one could look upon this song as an idyll of...

  15. The Widest Stream by The Adverbs

The nobility of struggle. The courage of persisting against nearly impossible odds to reach the next stage in an always ascending arc of overcoming obstacles, temporary failure, continued attempts and eventual success... This song is not about that. John basses and lyrics; Joe does the rest. The...

  16. rabbit /hill by The Adverbs

Something a bit...darker, especially compared to the frothiness of Alanna. The chorus features what might make a nice name for a math-rock or shoegazer band: An Orgy Of Prepositions. About the title; you know as much as I do. Joe musiced and sang, and John lyriced and bassed. Please enjoy. Or...

  17. Alanna by The Adverbs

It's a rom-com in a song, including embarrassing and hilarious awkward pratfall in front of the boss; just like something from that show with those annoying New York singletons, but rocks so much more! John: wrds + bs; Joe: gtr, drms + voc. Live it, love it, grunt it... Alanna Alanna Do not play...

  18. Disheveled by The Adverbs

An object lesson in how to weave the words frission, alouette, and Cooperstown into a tale of love and a celebration of life...sort of. John made the words and all the bass sounds; Joe vibrated the sounds of the words through his larynx into a microphone and made all the other sounds. Sorry I'm…

  19. Ellie May by The Adverbs

No, its not the Adverbs Unplugged, but it is a bit less ex-punk thrashy than some of our other offerings. John swears that this is NOT about that Clampett girl out by the cee-ment pond, but I'm not completely convinced. Joe guitars and sings and John lyrics and basses. Oh, look, it's a quieter...

  20. Polio by The Adverbs

A meditation on what it's like to be (nearly) completely eradicated, and just what that does to your self-esteem. A kind of "Inglourious Basterds" of communicable diseases. John made the words and the bass sounds; Joe made all the rest. Sympathy for the devil indeed. Polio Dropping cubes in my...

  21. Delphi by The Adverbs

Let's say you're a 12-year-old virgin; and let's say you spend your days inhaling noxious fumes to induce a hypnagogic trance so that you can answer questions about which you have no conscious knowledge of the answers. Let's say this lifestyle is less fulfilling to you than it sounds. What would...
