But temptation does not mean you have to live defeated.In Matthew 4:1–11, Jesus shows us how to recognize the enemy’s tactics, answer deception with the Word of God, and stand firm when temptation comes.In this Bible study, we examine the three temptations of Jesus through a simple framework:1. DESIRE — What do you want?After Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, Satan targeted His physical hunger: “Command that these stones become bread.”Jesus answered with Deuteronomy 8:3:“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”The enemy often targets us when our flesh is screaming the loudest. But Jesus shows us that our physical desires do not have to control us. We need the nourishment of God's Word.2. IDENTITY — Who are you?Twice Satan challenged Jesus with the words:“If You are the Son of God...”Satan attacked Jesus' identity while also twisting Scripture, even quoting Psalm 91:11 during the second temptation.But Jesus knew exactly who He was and why He had come. He did not need to prove His identity to Satan.This is why believers must know who we are in Christ and know the Bible for ourselves. Satan can twist Scripture, which makes biblical discernment essential.Jesus responded with Deuteronomy 6:16:“You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”3. WORSHIP — Who will you serve?Finally, Satan revealed what he ultimately wanted: worship.He offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would bow down before him.Jesus responded:“Away with you, Satan!”Then He declared the truth of God's Word from Deuteronomy 6:13 and 10:20: worship and service belong to God alone.Desire. Identity. Worship.The temptations looked different, but Jesus' foundation never changed:IT IS WRITTEN.Jesus did not negotiate with Satan. After moving out at 19 and relocating to Florida, she became entangled in the occult and New Age practices, including crystals, psychic work, Reiki healing, and other counterfeit spiritual experiences.In 2017, Dayle became a flight attendant and suffered severe health complications after chemical exposure, including losing her voice. What followed was a “wilderness season” in Dallas, Texas—where God began stripping away people and dependencies. In 2018, a Christian neighbor prayed for and baptized her, marking the beginning of her salvation—though discernment later revealed unhealthy spiritual influence that she had to walk away from.Still searching for healing, Dayle pursued alternative modalities in 2019, including psychedelics. During this dark and vulnerable season, she experienced what she testifies was a true encounter with Jesus Christ—distinct from every counterfeit spirit she had known before. The Holy Spirit made Himself known, and she heard the words: “Lead by example. Follow Me and I will guide you.”In 2020, God convicted her with a single word—“Babylon.” Through it, the Lord exposed hidden sins and past trauma, not to shame her, but to free her. He called us to die to self, pick up our cross, and follow Him daily.In this episode, I reflect on how watching Bonhoeffer and Tortured for Christ on Angel Studios shook my faith and forced me to ask one question:Am I truly following Jesus—or merely agreeing with Him from a distance?Dietrich Bonhoeffer boldly opposed Hitler and the Nazi regime, refusing to compromise his faith even when it cost him his freedom—and ultimately, his life.Richard Wurmbrand endured 14 years of imprisonment and torture under Communist oppression for preaching Christ, yet never stopped loving his captors. After his release, he founded Voice of the Martyrs to give voice to persecuted believers worldwide.These men didn’t just believe in Christ— they obeyed Him unto death.Jesus warned us clearly:Matthew 5:10 (ESV) “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”Today, we live in a nation where we are still free to own Bibles… gather… worship… speak… and evangelize.But the question remains:What are we doing with our freedom?Jesus did not hide the cost of following Him:Luke 9:23–24 (ESV) “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.’”Salvation is free. Discipleship is costly.Around the world, Christians still suffer imprisonment, violence, and death. In parts of Europe today, believers are being fined, arrested, and silenced for praying publicly and preaching the gospel. Antisemitism and hostility toward biblical Christianity are increasing.Yet in America, while we still enjoy freedom of worship, too many remain silent.Paul declared without hesitation:Philippians 1:21 (ESV) “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”And Jesus gave His final command:Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV) “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
