Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. We are kicking off Season 28 today a brand new Homemaker Portrait! I'm starting this episode with some notes from you out of the mail bag, what to expect this season on the podcast and magazine updates!!After those updates, I am chatting with my good friend, Kathlena Rule, about her experience of full time homemaking over the past 42 years. Kathlena’s concept of home was shaped by 2 godly parents and a life of constant moving. She loves the change that moving brings and the fact that there are always new people to meet. She and husband, Ed, lived several years abroad and that experience profoundly shaped her homemaking. We discuss all of the usual material-strengths, weaknesses, expectations and how to set and keep priorities. Throughout our conversation you’ll hear this theme; the home is a tool, an extension of the people who live there. The people are the point. Home and homemaking provide opportunity and space for unhurried fellowship leading to flourishing relationships with others and with Christ. You can now text me or leave me a voice mail using the link at the top of this description AND I can text you back! 🎉SHOW NOTESAll resources mentioned in this episode, including Kathlena's signature dish recipe, are on the blog. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.Well, we are moving right along in our Acts of Courageous Homemaking Series and I have a new installment for you today. The Bible has a lot to say about anxiety, fear and worry; giving us practical help in a world that seems intent on stoking our fears so it can sell us their solutions. Whether it’s a political agenda, a fool proof weight loss plan or an apocalyptic survival kit, solutions to our worst fears are hocked on every corner of the internet. So, are you buying it; or will you intentionally opt out of panic culture, settle your heart in the promises of God and change the world from your kitchen table? Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In this final long form episode of our winter 2026 season, I am presenting a portrait of a single homemaker, Brittany Shepard, who has been keeping a home as a single woman for many years.Though being single in her 40s is not what she expected, she has learned to see the unique value and beauty of the life God has given her right now. Brittany is, by nature, a storyteller and story keeper. She loves filling her home with family heirlooms and vintage treasures, so much so that her passion has grown into a flourishing side business called The Sentimental Decorator. Monday Motivation #49 | Acts of Courageous Homemaking #3, Be Salty, Stay Lit
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. We are at the half-way point of our Acts of Courageous Homemaking series today. We’ve discussed how God’s sovereignty is the foundation for our courage. We looked at the importance of being informed and how to find trustworthy sources. And last week we talked about keeping the home fires burning; that is homemaking as an act of resistance and defiance of the enemy in a spiritual war zone. Today I’m going to talk about the impact we have as homemakers not just in our homes but on the culture as a whole. While the modern day Babylon we inhabit may cause us to want to hide away, we still have a call as Christians to stay salty and be lit.NOTES & RESOURCESMore in this SeriesMM #46 Acts of Courageous Homemaking | Our FoundationMM #47 Acts of Courageous Homemaking #1 | Be InformedMM #48 Acts of Courageous Homemaking #2 | Keep the Home Fires BurningOriginal Article with FootnotesScripture Referenced in Episode Daniel 1-6Jeremiah 28-29Jeremiah 29:4-7 (Settle Down in Babylon)Jeremiah 29:11 (God's plans for you)Matthew 5:1-6 (salt, light, lamp stands and hill tops)Philippians 4:8, Ephesians 2:12, Colossians 4:6 (how to be salty and stay lit)Be Our Guest! Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.Hey Homemaker! We kick off this episode with a few updates and a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! Then we jump into a brand new homemaker portrait.I am chatting with Jazmine Wyland who is making a home with Matthew, her husband of 2 years, and their 17-year-old foster son. Jazmine shares her journey of the past 10 years beginning when she left home to live in her pastor’s family’s basement apartment, through becoming a newlywed with BIG expectations and idealized visions of home that were immediately challenged by the reality and unpredictability of married life. Jazmine’s story is a beautiful reminder that home isn’t found in perfect homemaking, but rather in present homemaking. That is, in being flexible, intentional and resourceful to create an atmosphere and a space where you and your people feel at home and can connect with one another whatever your present circumstances.NOTES & LINKSFull show notes on the blog, theartofhomepodcast.com/blog > search "Jazmine Wyland". Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I am chatting with in-the-trenches homemaker, Amanda Webb, who is no stranger to homemaking in unexpected and challenging circumstances. Just a few years into her marriage, her husband, Jonathan, was diagnosed with chronic leukemia, which among other things, prevents him from working a regular 9-5 job to provide for the family. They have had to get creative with cutting expenses, finding streams of income and shifting traditional household roles and responsibilities to meet their family’s needs . Amanda has much wisdom and valuable perspective to share. Whatever your homemaking circumstances you will walk away from her interview with insight to help your own practice of the art of home. Monday Motivation #47 | Acts of Courageous Homemaking; Be Informed
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In a world of hot takes and subjective partisan media it is very easy to become goaded or feel defeated by the inflammatory stories, reels and “reporting” that floods our screens day after day. How can we responsibly be informed about what is happening in our nation and around the world without become inflamed, apathetic, or isolationist? It starts by being the gatekeeper of your own mind and home like the Bereans who tested everything, even Paul's teachings, against the truth of God’s Word. Then by cultivating characteristics of an informed homemaker and seeking out trusted sources. These are the steps covered by The Art of Home’s resources released in the fall of 2024 just before the last presidential election. Today’s Monday Motivation complies the top takeaways of those resources.NOTES & LINKSRelated Art of Home EpisodesHomemaking Deep Dive | The Informed Homemaker with Isa Ryan, S21, E3Monday Motivation #8 | Be a Berean; Guard the Gates of Your Mind & Home, S21, E4Monday Motivation #46 | Acts of Courageous Homemaking; Our Foundation, S27, E5FULL SHOW NOTES WITH ALL RESOURCE LINKS: theartofhomepodcast.com/blog search "MM47"Be Our Guest! Homemaker Portrait | Pam Stockdale
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I am chatting with seasoned homemaker of 45 years, Pam Stockdale. Pam was nominated by her daughter, Kristen Howard, who was a guest on The Art of Home several years and ago and who has written a few pieces for our newsletter. Pam is genuine, forthright and her love for her husband, home and family is only outshined by her love for Jesus. We talk about her whirlwind romance/courtship and engagement with Jim…believe me , you’ve never heard one quite like theirs! Then we cover their time as traveling evangelists, horse trainers, ranchers and even airplane owners spanning 45 years of married life as well as Pam’s reflections on how being raised by her widowed father and some influential women in her life shaped the homemaker she became. Through it all, God has bent His ear time and again to Pam’s prayers and provided answers to questions she didn’t even know to ask, because He is that good. His provision has allowed Pam & Jim to "live loud and wide open," staying rooted in the things that matter most. Monday Motivation #44 | All in Good Time; Gently Entering a New Year
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.Welcome to the first Monday Motivation of Season 27, our Winter 2026 season of The Art of Home. I am here this cold January morning to motivate you, NOT to jump into New Year, New You plans with all of your might, but rather to enter the New Year from a place of rest and reflection. Think About It Questions:How do you typically spend January? What do you focus on in your homemaking? If you are tempted to skip the second half of winter and jump headlong into all the self and home improvement projects, what can you do enter the New Year more gently, from a place of rest?Consider the practice of reflection before resolution. What worked well in your 2025 homemaking? What did not work well? What would you like to leave behind in 2025 and what would you like to bring with you into 2026?Be Our Guest! Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In this final Homemaker Portrait of 2025, I am chatting with In-the-Trenches homemaker and mama to 5 girls, Jenny Nanninga. I loved this conversation with Jenny. She is so wise, funny, and really, she's an open book. She candidly shares her struggles to accept and adjust to life in a 700 square foot home with 5 girls and one bathroom. Though God blessed them 2 years ago with a larger home, Jenny values her time in the tiny house because she learned so much about contentment and creative homemaking there. She fiercely defends the value of homemaking to anyone who will listen, but most importantly to her girls and she is training them not just in the practical skills of the home but in valuing the work of the homemaker. We cover all the usual ground of strengths, weaknesses, influences, wins, fails and more. Homemaker Portrait | Mystie Winckler
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I am chatting with homemaker, homeschooler, podcaster, and writer, Mystie Winckler, about her experience of keeping a home over the last 24 years. She candidly confesses that having come from a large family, she thought she knew everything she needed to know and that homemaking would be a piece of cake.I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that her assumptions and expectations were seriously challenged by reality and she spent the first decade or so spinning her wheels in frustration. But God met her in the place of chaos and shattered pride and faithfully showed her what homemaking was really about. It’s not about efficient systems that never fail, nor organized spaces that never get messy. Homemaking is about facilitating life and relationships so that the home reflects the light of the Gospel to a dark and dying world. As we chat about Mystie's lessons learned and her ministry to homemakers, we cover all the usual ground of her beginnings, influences, priorities, hospitality, tips and more.
