What If?"
This inner awareness of myself — this reaching for a higher frequency of who I am — it’s new to me. Not new like I’ve never felt it. New like I’ve never had the words for it. Awareness. Frequency. Divinity. We get taught a lot of things growing up. But somehow nobody ever walks us all the way to the edge and says: you are equal to your Creator.Ooh. Feel that? Feel how the room tightens when I say it?It sounds like blasphemy. Bla-sphe-my. How dare you. How dare you be equal to your own Creator. That’s the reflex. That’s the cage door clicking shut. And I want you to notice — the reflex came faster than the thought. You didn’t decideit was blasphemy. You were trained to flinch. This is a public episode. Podcast Episode 1: The Blood, the Soap, and Mama Elen
My Inheritance: The Kingdom of Mama ElenMy childhood was defined by the presence of a formidable, meticulous matriarch: my Mama Elen. Looking back, her legacy in my life is a complex blend of “iron-clad” standards, vivid sensory memories, and a history that still carries a sharp emotional weight. My Life Under the Code of DelicadesaI grew up under Mama Elen’s strict code of delicadesa—a refined standard of cleanliness and order that governed her kitchen and, by extension, my entire world.* My Culinary Rigor: I watched her refuse every shortcut. If a recipe for tripe required ten grueling steps to clean it properly, I saw her perform all ten. I learned that excellence has no “easy way.”* The Dinuguan Rule: I can still see her “eagle eye” watching as the pig’s blood was caught for Dinuguan. She insisted it be caught directly, ensuring not a single drop ever touched the ground.* My Boundaries: She taught me the importance of personal space. She was fiercely protective of her belongings and never borrowed or lent clothes; she couldn’t bear the thought of the “smell” or stains of others on her things.* The Scent of Her Authority: To me, authority smells like Heno de Pravia soap. Even after we moved to the U.S., she special-ordered it from Spain to maintain that crisp, unmistakable fragrance. The Secrets of Our KitchenFor me, the kitchen was a place of “heat and magic,” where she whispered secrets that only I was meant to hear. While I initially saw the work as a “grueling duty,” I realize now she was passing down a kingdom to me.My Complex Legacy: The Scars and the LoveMy relationship with Mama Elen was marked by both deep love and the “sharpness” of her era.I still carry a physical mark on my shin—a scar from a needle she once threw that hit the bone. She was a woman of discipline, yet despite the physical “stings,” I was always her “baby boy.” I was her chosen successor, the one she trusted with her greatest talent.Today, I view that past pain as part of the “patience” required for great cooking. I don’t feel the need for apologies. She gave me her greatest love through her craft, and that is what I carry forward. This is a public episode.
