There was a time when I thought the Bible was mostly a rulebook—clear instructions for how to behave so God would be pleased with me. But the more I’ve learned to read Scripture through the lens of God’s character instead of my own performance, the more I see it as a story of God pursuing us, restoring us, and making all things new. Finding peace in the middle of life’s everyday chaos can feel a lot harder than staying calm in an actual emergency; at least in emergencies we’re too focused to panic.
