    Pause for Purpose

Send a textTurning points often arrive when we least expect them. As I celebrate my 36th birthday this week, I found myself at a crossroads with this podcast - something I've poured my heart into creating for nearly 200 episodes. The realization hit me like a lightning bolt: I've never given any single creative pursuit 100% of my focus and energy. My music, my performances, my writing – all have been competing for attention while I juggle multiple commitments. This podcast, as much as I love it, has sometimes pushed other dreams to the background. The interviews, writing, editing, marketing, and financial investment have consumed energy that could be directed toward completing my album and discovering my true purpose. This isn't a full goodbye, but rather a necessary pause. I'm stepping back to create space for deeper focus, to see what happens when I finally give my music the undivided attention it deserves. The song "Special" I've written reflects this journey – the lifelong desire to create something unique and meaningful, while battling the self-doubt and imagined criticism that lives in my head. What I've learned through this podcast is priceless. The genuine connections, the vulnerable moments, the creative surprises that emerge during conversation – these experiences have shown me what's possible when you commit to creating something authentic. Now I'm taking that knowledge and applying it to the next chapter. If you've been part of this journey – whether as a listener, guest, or supporter – thank you from the bottom of my heart. The podcast will remain available, and I may occasionally return with updates. But for now, I'm clearing away distractions and giving myself permission to pursue one dream with everything I have.Transition Music from Mad Chops Vol. 1 and Mad Chops Vol. 2 by Mad Keysand from Piano Soul Vol.1(Loop Pack) by The Modern Producers TeamFeatured song: "This Little Light Of Love" DEMO by Dom L'AmourCover art by Studio Mania: Custom Art @studiomania99Please subscribe to the podcast, and give us a good rating. 5 stars please and thank you. Where You Are Is Where You Need To Be

Send a textWhat happens when two performers step back from the relentless grind of the entertainment industry to ask: "Why am I doing this?" This conversation with Abby Vatterot traces our parallel journeys from theater school through Chicago, LA, and back to our Midwest roots, revealing how our creative purposes have evolved along the way.Remember when success meant constant performing, networking every night, and pushing yourself to exhaustion? We certainly do. Abby and I candidly discuss how we've shifted from that mentality to something more sustainable and authentic. "My why has definitely evolved," Abby shares. "Lately, my why is literally have fun." This refreshing perspective comes after years of pursuing entertainment careers across multiple cities, only to discover unexpected opportunities back home.We dive deep into the misleading narratives we received in theater school that left us unprepared for industry realities. The idealized notion that success requires abandoning the Midwest for coastal cities gets thoroughly debunked as we share our experiences finding meaningful work in St. Louis and beyond. One particularly humorous revelation: being taught to wear formal attire to auditions only to discover professionals showing up in jeans!Perhaps the most powerful thread running through our conversation is the journey toward self-compassion. "I don't talk about myself like that anymore," I admit when discussing how I've stopped being harshly self-critical about my career pace. Similarly, Abby describes finding joy in activities completely unrelated to performance – a balance neither of us prioritized in our younger years.Whether you're a creative professional questioning your path or simply interested in how priorities evolve with age and experience, this episode offers honest insights about finding purpose beyond achievement. As we conclude, Abby perfectly captures our shared realization: "You're going up in the right direction." Sometimes, that acknowledgment is exactly what we need to hear.Opening quote: Bob MoawadOpening and Closing Theme song: Produced by Dom L'AmourTransition Music from Mad Chops Vol. 1 and Mad Chops Vol. 2 by Mad Keysand from Piano Soul Vol.1(Loop Pack) by The Modern Producers TeamFeatured song: "You Belong to Me" Covered by Dom L'Amour and Abby Vatterott at Davenports Piano Bar in Chicago IL.Cover art by Studio Mania: Custom Art @studiomania99Please subscribe to the podcast, and give us a good rating. 5 stars please and thank you. The JB Jazz Jam Experience

Send a textEver wondered what musicians do when they're freed from the constraints of playing songs exactly as recorded? Step into the electric atmosphere of Atl's JB Jazz Jam with host Dom L’Amour as he pulls back the curtain on this monthly musical playground. The wedding band singer who must perform "Fly Me to the Moon" exactly like Sinatra night after night finally gets to break the mold, experiment, and create something uniquely his own. This episode captures the raw energy, spontaneity, and pure joy that erupts when talented musicians gather to play without boundaries or expectations.Through a series of live recordings from the jam sessions, listeners experience stunning reinterpretations of classics like "Killing Me Softly," "Summertime," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Each performance showcases not just technical skill but the conversational nature of jazz—musicians responding to each other in real-time, creating something that could only happen in that specific moment with those specific players.Beyond the music itself, JB (the namesake of the jam) delivers a powerful mini-lecture on the African American origins of virtually all American musical forms—illustrating how spirituals born in slavery evolved into blues, jazz, gospel, and eventually rock and roll. This historical context reminds us that these jam sessions aren't merely entertainment but part of a profound cultural tradition with deep historical significance. The episode concludes with something special—a preview of Dom's upcoming album featuring an original composition called "I Will Keep My Smile," a song about self-empowerment and choosing positivity even during life's challenges. It's a fitting conclusion that shows how artists honor tradition while creating new works that speak to contemporary experiences.Join us for this musical journey and discover why these creative spaces are so vital for artists. Mental Gainz: How I Stopped Searching for What's Wrong

Send a textThe unexpected peace that comes with slowing down sits at the heart of this deeply personal episode. Dom opens up about his mental journey navigating the end of wedding season—traditionally a time when performance gaps left him anxious and frustrated. But something's different this year.Through candid reflection, Dom shares how organizing his life last year and embracing discipline this year created a foundation for accepting where he is right now. "I feel like for a long time I allowed the unknown to dictate my whole day-to-day," he reveals, describing how he would obsess over opportunities not coming his way or compare himself to other performers seemingly achieving more. The breakthrough came when he realized everyone's path is different, and external validation couldn't provide what internal acceptance could. This shift allowed Dom to find profound joy in simple pleasures—hosting friends for dinner, catching an impromptu jazz jam without feeling compelled to record everything for social media, appreciating the home he's created that truly reflects who he is. He talks about challenging the performer's instinct to constantly hustle and instead embracing moments of genuine connection and creativity without agenda.Perhaps most powerful is Dom's realization that adulthood isn't about reaching some magical stage where everything makes sense. "When you start to realize that the world is not really changing, it's always going to be the same," he says, acknowledging that human dynamics remain consistent across all life phases. This perspective has freed him to stop waiting for some future state of arrival and instead embrace his journey exactly as it unfolds.Connect with Dom on Instagram @dom_lamour for more insights, music recommendations, or just to continue the conversation about finding peace in a world that rarely slows down.Support the show

From Big Booty Judy to Gardening Guru

Send a textGarden wisdom, friendship, and life's little surprises bloom in this delightful conversation between Dom L'Amour and his dear friend Mattie Jo "MJ" Graham. What begins with a quirky gardening tip about lime pellets for award-winning eggplants quickly blossoms into a wide-ranging exploration of how we connect to our food, our heritage, and each other.MJ, once known as "Big Booty Judy" during her Buffalo Wild Wings days, has transformed into "Gardening Judy" with an elaborate front yard garden that's become the talk of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Her raised beds, archways, and chicken coop represent more than just a hobby—they're a reclamation of heritage and a statement about sustainable living. Meanwhile, Dom shares how continuing his grandmother's garden after her passing became both a tribute and a personal revolution in how he thinks about food. The pair trade gardening hacks and mishaps with equal enthusiasm—from MJ's ingenious in-garden vermicomposting system to hilariously failed attempts at deterring wildlife with various types of urine (yes, really). Their conversation reveals how gardening creates unexpected connections: between chickens and Japanese beetles, between seasonal growing and superior flavor, between past generations and present moments. When MJ confesses to crocheting a special gift inspired by Dom's wedding song, we witness how the seeds of friendship continue to flourish even as their lives take different paths.Beyond the soil and seeds, this episode digs into deeper questions about modern convenience versus meaningful effort. Why does a sun-warmed tomato taste so much better than store-bought? What happens when we slow down to mill our own flour or make pasta by hand? Why are we so quick to accept convenience over quality? As Dom and MJ riff on everything from whale vomit in cologne to yoga benefits, their genuine affection and comfortable banter remind us that the best relationships, like the best gardens, thrive with a mixture of care, laughter, and occasional surprises.Ready to plant some new ideas in your life? When Life Forces You to Pause

Send a textWhat happens when a professional musician suddenly can't play? In this deeply reflective conversation, saxophonist Scott Box joins Dom Lamore to explore the unexpected journey of his recent hand injury and the profound questions it's raised about identity, purpose, and faith.Scott shares his raw emotional response to being sidelined from performing – the initial depression, the frustration of everyday tasks taking twice as long, and the struggle to find meaning in forced stillness. Yet within this challenge, new perspectives emerge: "Praise God, it gave me an appreciation for having two working limbs... Maybe I need to sit down for a minute and just relax. I've spent more time with my wife already. That's a beautiful thing."The conversation flows naturally into exploring the demanding lifestyle of professional musicians – late nights, weekend work, and the physical toll of performance. Both men discuss how they prepare their bodies and minds for shows, revealing the athletic discipline required behind the scenes of creative work. Their candid exchange about wedding band dynamics highlights the crucial importance of camaraderie: "That's one of the best hangs in a band that I've ever had. Ever."Perhaps most compelling is Scott's reflection on his conversion to Islam and the tension it created with his musical career. He thoughtfully questions whether music truly serves a spiritual purpose or merely provides entertainment and dopamine rushes. "We talk about how music brings people together," Scott observes, "but how does it bring people together? Because people coming together is still not a concrete concept." This leads to a fascinating examination of what makes something genuinely spiritual – the practical application rather than just the feeling it provides. As the discussion deepens, both men share their evolving sense of purpose. For Scott, it's increasingly centered around family relationships rather than career achievements. For Dom, it's about creating opportunities that showcase other artists' talents. Their honest exploration of life's big questions offers listeners a rare window into the inner landscape of working artists wrestling with meaning, authenticity, and intentionality.Ready to think more deeply about your own purpose and how you engage with the world? Everyone is surrounded by the song birds light.Song bird does this three times a week. Always excited but ends the night weak. Tired body, tired voice, tire of the normal life outside. Outside is the truth, but the stage is just a phase. No one could make that a living, god willing you meet the right person. Song bird talks about this all the time, and thinks about the stage. Afraid that their dream is a joke.Song bird continues to sing in the night, Never sure if this career is rightsad but happy, down but up. Trying to keep faith in this constant battle.Songbird yearns for folks who understands, and jumps from bar to bar for Mics.tears on their cheek, usually after doing something that makes them feel like the best person in the worldWhy is this the way songbird is? How are you This way? What drove you to this cliff?Songbird lives a different life, Has to stop comparing what other people like. Works at Night, 30 no kids, gig after gig, retiring just means you Quit. Poor Thing, Lost and confused, Innocent like Bella Baxter.Songbird sings, Songbird crys, Songbird loves, songbird flys, Songbird Stops, Songbird goes again. When Will Song bird become a star, Maybe Now, Maybe never. Its possible they are a Star, but we just cant see it. Another state of mind could lift us all away. Bliss is achievable.songbird I believe in you. The things you do are beautiful. Never live by another peoples rule. You are the Star, A unique, Talented, Confident, Inspiring, Marvelous Jewel."Have you ever felt like you're pouring your heart into something beautiful that the world just isn't seeing? This raw, emotional exploration follows Songbird, a performer caught between the magic of creative expression and the harsh realities of making art in a world that demands practicality.Songbird takes the stage three times weekly, transforming venues with their voice while privately battling exhaustion and doubt. "Outside is the truth, but the stage is just a phase. No one can make that a living," echoes the refrain they've heard countless times. We witness the emotional whiplash of being simultaneously elevated by performance and deflated by society's dismissal of artistic pursuits as merely a stepping stone to something more "legitimate."At 30, Songbird exists outside conventional timelines—working nights, moving from gig to gig, and navigating a path that friends and family struggle to understand. The tears that follow performances reveal the complex emotional landscape artists inhabit: feeling simultaneously like "the best person in the world" while questioning if they're merely chasing an impossible dream. Yet through this uncertainty comes a profound realization that transcends traditional measures of success: "They are a star, we just can't see it." Perhaps true artistry isn't about external validation but recognizing the unique light you already bring to the world. If you've ever felt misunderstood in your passion or questioned your creative path, this episode will remind you that your worth isn't defined by recognition but by the courage to share your gifts authentically.Poem by. Camp Stories 2/6/25 6:58PM

Send a text"My favorite part of a camp fire is when the wood begins to glowIt's things like this that I think about more each day that I grow olderThe calm, the crackle. The smell, the smile on my face. It's magical. When I was younger I didn't look out the window and see. I saw a bunch of nothing. Now I see the trees, the sky, the water, the life that's happening in front of me.I enjoy just how rare it is to see and hear how beautiful those things are.Our society is stuck in boxes, digital hell holes, that never needs water because those trees are fake. Those pictures are stages, those comments are AI.We live in a world thats on the edge of World War 3, and I feel like we are pulled away from the simple things even more today. We can't have a thought without just pulling our phone out. I wonder what 8 oz's is in Cups. Siri, what's 8 oz's in Cups? And its there. You don't call your mother for that answer anymore, You don't reach out to your grandmother who loves to feel needed. We are stuck. I feel So stuck constantly. Will anything change, will the world slow down again like it did in 2020. Will I be able to smell the roses, and drive down topanga canyon in Los Angeles and See the ocean without any smog? Will we be able to go anywhere in the world and not be judged because We come from a country that's not respected anymore. When will the fire glow when will there be peace in my mindWhen will I believe in humanityWhen will the people around me see what I seeHow is it just me. Why is it just me. I crave that calm, that crackle, that wonderful smell of a magical camp fire"Remember when you last sat by a campfire, mesmerized by glowing embers, breathing in that distinctive smoky scent? This reflective journey explores how such simple pleasures become more meaningful as we age, when our perception shifts from seeing "a bunch of nothing" to noticing the trees, sky, water - the life unfolding before our eyes.Against the backdrop of a world teetering on global conflict, we've become increasingly disconnected from these authentic experiences. We've traded meaningful human interactions for digital conveniences - asking Siri questions we once directed to our mothers or grandmothers who valued feeling needed. Our society has become confined to "digital hell holes" filled with staged photos and artificial engagement, pulling us further away from genuine connection with our surroundings and each other. This deeply personal monologue questions when things might change: Will we experience another global pause like 2020 that allowed nature to briefly reclaim its spaces? Will we drive down scenic routes without smog obscuring the view? When will peace of mind return, and when will humanity collectively recognize what we've lost? The narrator craves the calm, the crackle, the magical essence of a campfire - essentially longing for a return to presence and authenticity in an increasingly disconnected world. Take a moment away from your screen today to notice something real around you - what simple beauty have you been missing?Poem by. We are Safe and Supported in More Ways than We can Possibly Understand.

Send a textHave you ever wondered if our hyper-connected world is actually making us more disconnected from what truly matters? In this profoundly human conversation, host Dom L'Amour sits down with musician Jacob Zengerling to explore the spaces between digital noise and genuine human connection. The pair navigate through deceptively simple questions with far-reaching implications: Why do we cling to arbitrary New Year's resolutions when ancient civilizations followed natural cycles? How have corporations created endless consumption loops that benefit few while harming many? And most importantly, how might focusing on our personal growth create ripple effects that transform communities?"The more that we can get our own personal selves to a life that we want, we set that example for the world," Jacob reflects, offering a perspective that shifts responsibility from external systems to internal development. This becomes the conversation's throughline as they examine everything from minimum wage stagnation to the beauty of locally-sourced economies they've witnessed abroad. What emerges is a thoughtful examination of modern living that doesn't shy away from difficult truths. Dom and Jacob acknowledge the challenges of navigating social interactions, misreading signals, and responding to negativity with compassion rather than confrontation. "Hurt people hurt people," Jacob notes, suggesting our response to hostility might best be understanding rather than escalation. The conversation takes unexpected turns into practical wisdom, from Jacob's fascinating discovery of traditional incense ceremonies that profoundly regulate the nervous system to Dom's reflections on finding musical community. Their exchange culminates in Jacob's powerful affirmation that "we are safe and supported in more ways than we could possibly understand" – a perspective that offers comfort in uncertain times.Whether you're questioning your relationship with consumer culture, seeking deeper connections, or simply looking for permission to prioritize self-work, this episode provides both comforting validation and gentle challenges to conventional thinking. Finding Joy Amidst Anxiety

Send a textWhen happiness breaks through anxiety, do you grab it with both hands? That precious moment of joy becomes something to savor, especially when the mind constantly works against you. In this soulful conversation, Shane Murphy opens up about the internal battle between finding creative fulfillment and maintaining financial security.Shane's journey from self-described loner to partner reveals how love transforms perspective. "Everything is so much freer and I feel so much more confident and supported," he shares, describing how his relationship with Erica provides a foundation that makes pursuing creative passions less daunting. The genuine warmth between these two friends—who first bonded performing as the Bee Gees in a musical revue—creates space for vulnerable admissions about career fears and artistic dreams. The heart of their discussion explores that universal struggle many artists face: how do you honor your soul's calling while paying the bills? Shane's anxiety about leaving his finance job to pursue music fully resonates with anyone who's felt trapped between security and passion. Meanwhile, Dom shares practical approaches to organizing creative pursuits, suggesting that accomplishing just three career-focused tasks daily builds momentum without overwhelming.Their conversation weaves through mindfulness practices, overcoming self-doubt, and finding joy in focused activities from painting miniatures to practicing scales. The most poignant moments come when they acknowledge how easily we talk ourselves out of opportunities before even trying. "Just email them," Shane realizes about potential collaborators. "People want nobody comes to this show to see you mess up."Listen for their spontaneous, soul-stirring rendition of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me"—a perfect demonstration of the talent and connection that makes this friendship special. Whether you're wrestling with anxiety, balancing practicality with dreams, or simply seeking more intentional joy, this episode offers both comfort and gentle challenge to take that first small step forward.Guest: Shane Murphy AKA @theshanemurphyOpening quote: Roy T. Uncles, Boundaries, and Family Dynamics

Send a text"When kids draw to you, they see your heart." This simple but profound observation sets the tone for a rich conversation between Dom L’Amour and his best friend Chris Bates about what truly matters in our relationships with family, work, and ourselves. The episode begins with Chris sharing his unexpected joy in working from home while raising his daughter Jaide. Rather than feeling the guilt that many parents experience when balancing careers and childcare, he's discovered a rhythm that allows him to be present throughout the day. "I've been able to create a routine where I don't have to overcompensate for time with my child, because I'm around her all day," Chris explains, challenging conventional notions about work-life separation. This leads to a fascinating exploration of how our relationship with work fundamentally misaligns with human needs. With eight hours for work and eight for sleep, we're left scrambling to fit everything else into the remaining time. Is it any wonder that Chris and Dom have come to value random weekdays off more than traditional weekends? The freedom from crowds, the better service at restaurants, and the peace of enjoying experiences rather than just enduring them makes a compelling case for rethinking how we structure our time.Perhaps the most thought-provoking segment emerges when the conversation shifts to family dynamics and boundary-setting. "Are you intertwining family with love? Because family and love are two different things," Chris observes, cutting through the obligatory nature of many family relationships. As we age and recognize patterns in how people treat us, the line between who deserves our time and energy naturally shifts, regardless of blood ties. This isn't about abandoning family but about establishing mutual respect within these relationships. The episode closes with Chris reflecting on the pure joy of being "Uncle Chris" to his nieces and nephew. The genuine connection he feels when children choose to love him speaks to something we all crave – authentic relationships based on who we truly are rather than what we provide or represent.Whether you're reassessing your work situation, navigating complex family dynamics, or simply trying to find more joy in everyday moments, this conversation offers both wisdom and permission to create boundaries that honor your authentic self. Listen now and join Dom and Chris in exploring what it means to be truly present in all aspects of life.Opening quote: Christine MorganOpening and Closing Theme song: Produced by Dom L'AmourTransition Music from Mad Chops Vol. 1 and Mad Chops Vol. 2 by Mad Keysand from Piano Soul Vol.1(Loop Pack) by The Modern Producers TeamFeatured song: "This Guys in love with you" Covered by Dom L'Amour and The Andrews at Lemon Bar in Chicago.Cover art by Studio Mania: Custom Art @studiomania99Please subscribe to the podcast, and give us a good rating. 5 stars please and thank you. Black Jeopardy with Chris Bates

Send a textTake a seat and get ready to test your knowledge alongside Dom and Bates as they face off in an electrifying game of Black Jeopardy on this special episode of the Black Man Talking Emotions podcast. What starts with a simple rock-paper-scissors showdown quickly evolves into a riveting battle of wits across five categories: Black TV shows, music, pop culture, Black history, and movie quotes. The chemistry between Dom and Bates drives this episode, as they navigate questions ranging from identifying Rosa Parks' Montgomery bus boycott to recalling the iconic "Go home, Roger" catchphrase from Sister, Sister. Listen as they confidently answer some questions ("King Kong ain't got shit on me" from Training Day) while hilariously struggling with others (the names of the four women on Living Single). Their competitive banter creates moments of genuine hilarity, especially when they digress into an impromptu discussion about the contrasting approaches of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.Beyond the entertainment value, this episode serves as a celebration of Black cultural knowledge and history. Whether they're reciting Drake lyrics ("Last name ever, first name greatest") or reflecting on Emmett Till's historical significance, Dom and Bates demonstrate how games can be both fun and educational. The friendly competition culminates with Dom claiming victory at 1,000 points to Bates' negative 200, though not without some good-natured protests about question difficulty.Whether you're a trivia enthusiast or simply looking for an entertaining, knowledge-filled listen, this episode delivers laughs while showcasing the richness of Black culture across multiple domains. Making Peace with Your Path: Cleveland Jones on Music, Self-Worth, and Retirement

Send a text"If you weren't so damn nice, you'd be successful." These words, spoken to Dom L’Amour years ago, sparked a profound journey of self-discovery that unfolds throughout this intimate conversation with Cleveland Jones. For artists navigating the music industry, establishing your value doesn't come with a handbook. Cleveland openly shares the moment someone told him he was "like a hoe that people can pimp out" because he didn't recognize his own worth—a brutal assessment that changed how he viewed himself professionally. Dom echoes this experience, recounting his own struggles with industry professionals who sensed his eagerness to please and exploited it.As Cleveland approaches his fifties, he candidly discusses facing retirement without traditional financial safety nets, a reality many creative professionals encounter. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when they explore the concept of "choosing your pain" rather than simply setting goals—deciding what sacrifices you're willing to make and which boundaries remain non-negotiable. For Dom, no career opportunity justifies sacrificing family relationships; for Cleveland, maintaining his peace of mind has become paramount. The beauty of this exchange lies in its remarkable vulnerability. Both men acknowledge the unconventional reality of a performer's life—working when others socialize, facing constant rejection, and learning to protect their creative spirits while building sustainable careers. Their shared wisdom offers a masterclass for artists at any stage: true success comes from honoring your craft, knowing your worth, and staying true to personal values.Whether you're a musician, creative professional, or simply someone navigating your own path to self-value, this conversation provides both practical wisdom and emotional resonance. Beyond Inspiration: The Hidden Rituals That Fuel Creativity

Send a textDom L'Amour speaks with Christopher Shank  about  our creative process, being more organized, working on ourselves and so much more. What if the secret to creativity isn't waiting for inspiration to strike, but simply showing up consistently? In this thoughtful conversation with screenwriter and friend of the show Christopher Shank, we dive deep into the mechanics of the creative process and challenge the notion that artists need to wait for the perfect moment of inspiration.Shank shares how breaking down his scriptwriting into manageable chunks—sometimes just a single scene during lunch—has transformed his productivity while preserving his mental health. Meanwhile, I've discovered that continuously moving between projects—songs, poems, musical scenes—keeps my creative muscles active without feeling burnt out on any single endeavor. We both agree: consistency trumps intensity when it comes to sustainable creative work. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when we explore the relationship between creators and their tools. I detail my practice of designating specific pencils for specific tasks—drawing inspiration from Japanese perspectives on objects having their own energy or spirit. There's something powerful about treating creative tools with intention rather than mere utility. As Shank puts it, "Everything has its own energy."We also unpack how ideas evolve in unexpected ways. Shank describes a story he's worked on for nearly two decades that finally clicked when he found the right metaphor, while I recount how a song inspired by "Cherokee" transformed from an attempted tribute to Native American history into a personal reflection about living off Cherokee Street. Creative ideas rarely arrive fully formed—they need time and space to evolve.Whether you're a seasoned creator struggling with blocks or someone just beginning to explore your creative potential, this episode offers practical wisdom for sustaining your practice through both inspiration and drought. The Art of Remembering Your Why

Send a textDom L'Amour speaks with my girl Maria Bartolotta about Her 10 years of being sober, struggles with moving, Relationships with family and friends, and so much more.Grateful drunks never drink." These six words have carried Maria Bartolotta through a decade of sobriety—a journey that began in a world almost unrecognizable from today. Think: Blockbuster stores still open, Netflix mailing DVDs, BlackBerry phones, and Ebola dominating health headlines.Dom Lamour and Maria dive deep into what it means to maintain sobriety not just as a lifestyle choice, but as a necessity. With remarkable candor, Maria reveals how recovery tools have shaped her approach to life's biggest challenges, particularly her recent decision to leave New York and return to her hometown. "My ego says you failed, you just turned 35 and you're living with your parents," she admits, despite knowing logically that the move opens new creative doors. The conversation explores the delicate balance between artistic ambition and mental wellbeing. Both performers share the strange paradox of their chosen path—the constant questioning, the difficulty of defining success, and the crucial importance of remembering your "why." For Maria, that purpose has evolved from simply wanting to perform full-time to creating art that makes others feel seen and less alone. Most powerfully, they discuss how practices like gratitude lists, meditation, and yoga serve as anchors during life transitions. Maria shares how becoming more selective with her energy has led to healthier relationships, while still battling the tendency to isolate when things get tough. The episode concludes with a beautiful meditation on finding joy in small things—like snowfall—and the power of staying present even when feeling raw.Whether you're navigating sobriety, considering a major life change, or simply trying to honor your creative purpose while paying the bills, this conversation offers both practical tools and emotional reassurance. Expectations, Holidays, and Our Digital Diet

Send a textDom L'Amour speaks with Larry Rodriguez aka @larryrodgram about Expectations around the holidays, GNX, The State of Cinema and so much more!"Why are these girls twerking? Why do I see movies everywhere? Why is it constantly showing me stuff I show no interest in?" These aren't just random questions—they're part of a deeper reflection on how we consume digital content versus how carefully we once selected what went into our bodies. In this thought-provoking episode, Dom L’Amour and filmmaker Larry Rodriguez dive into the parallels between mindful eating and mindful scrolling, revealing how our digital diet might need the same scrutiny we once gave food labels. "I have to find a way to eliminate that helplessness that social media creates," Dom shares, sparking a conversation that will make you reconsider your own consumption habits. The conversation flows naturally through holiday expectations, exploring how traditions evolve as we age and form our own families. From the stress of meaningful gift-giving to the corporate-driven pressure of Christmas and New Year's, they dissect why these celebrations often leave us feeling drained rather than fulfilled. Larry offers a refreshing perspective: "Thanksgiving, I've found out the older I've gotten, is the better holiday, just because there's no pressure with it."When the discussion turns to Kendrick Lamar's GNX album, both men light up with appreciation for authentic artistry. Their analysis of the Kendrick vs. Drake beef transcends simple rap rivalry, becoming a meditation on cultural authenticity versus commercial success. "When you listen to Kendrick, you learn about the lifestyle of a person living in LA," Dom notes, highlighting how true art connects to lived experience. The episode concludes with a candid assessment of cinema's current state, where studio politics and financial motivations often override creative integrity. Resonating Beyond the Music with Linda Marks

Send a textWhen I sat down across from Linda Marks, I couldn't help but feel the weight of her story — a tale of a harrowing battle with anorexia during her teenage years, a poignant reminder of the danger of societal pressures and external expectations. Our conversation takes shape around the transformative journey of healing and growth, embracing the cultural traditions and personal rituals that foster our well-being. As Linda opens up about the delicate art of tuning into our own physical and emotional needs, I'm prompted to reflect on my own path and the importance of authenticity in our lives.Music weaves its way through our discussion, not just as a form of entertainment, but as a catalyst for connection and healing. As she shares the inspiration behind her 14th studio album, "A Recipe for Hope," we celebrate the role of music in bridging divides and fostering a sense of community. Psychotherapy, too, becomes a focal point, illuminating the shared moments of humanity that reveal our true selves. We delve into how authentic interactions and inner work enable us to emerge as beacons of hope, encouraging each of you to find and share your own light. The final notes of our dialogue bring us to confront head-on the pressing social issues of gun violence and abortion rights, and how music serves as a powerful medium to provoke thought and foster change. We examine how art can open the floor for meaningful discussion and understanding, with an emphasis on compassion and the need for fundamental societal change. From the intimate to the global, our conversation charts a course through the critical conversations of our time, all aimed at inspiring collective improvement and a more harmonious world. Join us for this heart-to-heart, and let's journey through these essential themes together.Support the show
