Who did you share this with? --- 👑 Two Kings, Two Outcomes: Why Identity Matters in Disciple-Making When we look at the lives of King Saul and King David, one thing becomes strikingly clear: both were chosen, both were anointed, but only one left a legacy aligned with God’s heart. In the CDM Podcast, Paul Watson explains that the real difference between Saul and David wasn’t talent, opportunity, or even failure—it was identity. Saul’s identity was rooted in his role. He constantly made decisions based on fear of man and the need to protect his position. Even when he received direct instructions from God, he compromised to preserve appearances. Saul was more concerned with how he looked to others than how he stood before God. His identity was unstable, tied to performance and approval. David’s identity, however, was rooted in his relationship with God. Even in failure—like his sin with Bathsheba—David responded with humility, repentance, and a desire to be restored. His actions weren’t always godly, but his heart always turned back to God. His identity was built not on perfection but on connection—he knew who he was because he knew whose he was. The lesson?  If we want to make disciples worth multiplying, we must first anchor our identity in Christ. Without that foundation, we risk replicating insecurity, inconsistency, and spiritual drift in the people we disciple. We don’t multiply knowledge or programs—we multiply who we are. “You produce what you are. We care about Gospel presentations–which can be unnerving at first. But relationships are hard work.   Foundationally, making disciples is not as much sharing the Gospel as it is walking with others in relationship; with the goal of seeing the Kingdom of God come.   —Our disciple-making efforts must build on the right foundation— What is the Heart of Engagement?

When it comes to DMM, does a centralized leadership team stifle the small group format? Is it more healthy to have leadership, or to not? The answer is a nuanced and emphatic: Both! The Navy seals have incredible leadership structure but operate in small bands, much like DMM. They accomplish this through incredible leader building with intense accountability. It allows the insight of the boots-on-the-ground operator to do what's best, while still being tied to the larger vision and purpose. Our brains can't move like fingers but they can transmit a single purpose that requires multiple faculties (our shoulder, arm, wrist) to work together to accomplish our goal. If we pursue DMM with no central leadership, our work will have glaring weaknesses, conspicuous by their absence: 1) A radical commitment to a single vision and purpose. 2) Commitment to constant training, coaching and mentoring. 3) Ruthless Evaluation 4) Radical Accountability 5) A call to Higher Character and Maturity.
