With the region’s history of conflict going back to ancient times, this is an audacious objective.One of Trump’s favorite adjectives is the word “great.” In late February, the war started “great” with the airstrike extermination of Iran’s supreme leader and dozens of other commanders. The war continued to go great as the U.S. and Israel “decimated” Iran’s military infrastructure and sank its navy. And now we’re told the negotiations with Iran to end the war and give up their nuclear weapons ambitions are going great.But is that really true? One day the president says a deal is close. The next day we hear there’s no deal. The reality is no amount of positivism can make a crooked stick straight—or open the Strait (of Hormuz), for that matter.Iran is crooked and intractable. Their Shia Muslim worldview is apocalyptic. They believe they will usher in the Twelfth Imam, the Islamic version of the messiah, through the conflagration of hostilities. This means they have no intention of peace with the U.S. and Israel, regardless of casualties and hardship. Their patience is long while the president must be mindful of the mid-term elections in November where he could lose power in the Congress.So how to reconcile the seemingly irreconcilable? Send us Fan MailGUESTS: Mary Jane (David’s mom); siblings: Marnie, Mark and his wife, Gina, and John; caregivers: Tandi and TaylieI don’t remember the exact year, but it was about 20 years ago that I began interviewing my Dad and Mom at this time of year on programs related to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.As some listeners will remember, my Dad went to heaven in February 2023 after a sudden heart event at age 91. After 68 years of marriage, my mom became a widow. That’s a difficult loss, as anyone who has lost a beloved husband or wife will attest.Over the past three years since losing my Dad, my Mom has experienced what many elderly people do: the loss of a spouse and declining health. She broke her shoulder and suffered a brain bleed after falling off her treadmill, underwent a knee replacement, endured emergency small intestine surgery and 22 grueling nights in the hospital to recover, and later suffered another fall in her bathroom, breaking a bone in her back. She was then hospitalized for nearly a week due to fluid in her lung cavity.Then this past January, after a period of relative stability, she experienced sudden abdominal pain caused by a twisted intestine, again requiring emergency surgery and 14 nights in the hospital.I say all this not to make the case that she has suffered more than others, but rather the opposite—that what she has gone through is very common for elderly people, and often much worse. After all, Scripture says, “our outer man is decaying,” but the good news for the Christian is that “our inner man is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).My mom is home now and doing relatively well. But she can no longer live independently due to the risk of falling. Our family is walking through this journey with her, but we are not doing it alone. God has brought some wonderful women into our lives to provide daytime and overnight care throughout the week. You will meet two of them today in the second segment.In the final segment, you will also hear from my siblings as they reflect on both the blessings and the challenges of caring for my Mom. And that is the point of this program: to remind us of God’s call to serve and care for aging parents, and how He does a good work not only in the life of the one being cared for, but also in the lives of the caregivers.We’ll also hear from my Mom herself, now age 92. Her voice may not be as strong as you have heard in the past, but by God’s grace, her faith is as strong as ever. And many from the older generation may not discern the downward trajectory or actually see it as “progress.”But the basis for evaluating our society is not human viewpoints, not even my mother’s, but the fixed standard of God’s Word. For example, God designed marriage to be between one man and one woman for life, not two or three people of the same gender. God commands that our speech be truthful and edifying, not marked by obscenity or sensuality. God desires His principles and practices—like prayer, worship, Christ-like character—to be venerated rather than dismissed.So where do we go from here? Can the culture be renewed or is that just another attempt at coercive Christian nationalism? Or as it is sometimes called, Holy Week or Passion Week, commemorating the final week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ that culminated in His crucifixion on this coming Friday and resurrection next Sunday.Many significant events occurred in the days leading to His crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus made what’s called “The Triumphal Entry” into Jerusalem this weekend on Sunday, also know as Palm Sunday, when he presented Himself to Israel as their promised Messiah and King, His followers waving palm branches and laying their coats on the road as Jesus rode in on the colt of a donkey.On Monday, He came back into Jerusalem and cleansed the temple for the second time. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he taught in the temple and contended with unbelieving religious leaders of the Jews. And it always ends badly for those who get seduced into it.The Egyptian Pharaoh attempted to kill male Jewish babies, and his country was destroyed by God’s plagues. Haman in Persia (modern-day Iran) plotted to exterminate all Jews in the kingdom, and he and his 10 sons were executed. In the 20th century, Hitler launched an attempt to annihilate the Jewish people. He died, and Germany lost World War II.There have been many more examples of enmity toward the Jews throughout history and yet the Jewish people continue to survive and even prosper.Anti-Israel, anti-Jewish hostility is inspired by Satan. How so? Satan is driven to thwart God’s plan. So to exterminate the Jews before the coming of Jesus Christ, Himself a Jew, would be to foil God’s promise of a Savior. To destroy Israel now would be to derail God’s promise to save Israel and the return of Christ.Fundamentally, the lack of peace in the Middle East is about Israel’s neighbors open hostility toward the Jewish people’s presence. The Jews did not take back Israel through force of arms in 1948 but through declarations by Britain and the United Nations. No matter, the newly established State of Israel was attacked immediately by her Arab neighbors.This helps explain why Iran and its proxies across the Middle East, like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, who although holding differing Islamic beliefs, are united by an unquenchable hatred and motive to destroy Israel.But it’s not just the Middle East. The spiritual contagion of enmity toward the Jews and Israel has infected many in the West. The political and theological left, which are basically one and the same, are characterized by this. But what is troubling is that the political and theological right (i.e. conservatives) are succumbing as well. Notable influencers like Tucker Carlson, Candance Owens, and Nick Fuentes, along with many others, openly and loudly deride Israel and the Jews, asserting:The modern-day people in Israel aren’t JewsThe Jews control America and the U.S. does Israel’s bidding in the Middle EastThe Jews are the great corruptors in the world and seek global dominionIsrael is a genocidal oppressorEven if there was any truth to these defamations, none of it would cancel God’s unbreakable promise: “God has not rejected His people, has He? Christ understands and sympathizes with our weaknesses and sufferings and believers are to be like Him.Hebrews 4:15 confirms this: “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.”Colossians 3:12-13 extols that we show compassion: “as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”So while sympathy and compassion are biblical virtues, there is a corrupted form of empathy today which serves as a sacred virtue of the left that is blind to moral truth and negative consequences because the object of their empathy holds an idolized status of being oppressed.So going back to the aforementioned examples, girls missing opportunities in sports or getting injured or defeated by biological boys is ignored for the greater good of helping the purportedly oppressed “trans community” feel accepted.It’s more important to be welcoming to our Somali Muslim neighbors than to worry about billions in taxpayer fraud. In Iran, millions have been on the streets protesting with thousands killed by the Shia Islamist regime led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is on the brink of being ousted due to economic decline and repressive rule. This situation has significant ramifications for stability in the Middle East and even the end times.Here in my home state of Minnesota, violent confrontations continue against ICE agents by protesters and paid agitators and rioters, as agents search for and arrest illegal immigrants. President Trump has stated he is considering employing the Insurrection Act to use military force to quell the obstruction and violence which has been incited by MN Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.There are other fires—in Venezuela after the U.S. captured their Communist narco-terrorist president Nicolas Maduro; in England and Australia which are threatening and arresting their own citizens for social media content against Islam; in Ukraine where the intractable, deadly war with Russia continues.And yet all these fires at home and abroad are far less significant and lasting than what the Bible describes as the “unquenchable fire” of hell.Hell is an issue that is almost unspeakable, and rightly so, because of the horror of what it is—eternal conscious torment for all who have rejected God by not believing in His Son’s substitutionary death and resurrection on the sinner’s behalf. In fact, the final destination for non-believers is described this way in Revelation 20: “if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”Because hell is so horrific and never ending, there are many who question God’s character in sending people there. They say, “I know sin offends the holy God, but punishment for eternity in hell is disproportionate to the crime.”Kirk Cameron, actor and Christian influencer and author, who has worked and associated with many sound Christians like Ray Comfort, Ken Ham, and John MacArthur, announced on his podcast recently that he no longer believes that hell is eternal conscious torment but rather that an unbeliever is eventually annihilated. In other words, unbelievers do go to hell for punishment but at some point they go out of existence.This is certainly not the first time the eternality of hell has been challenged and it won’t be the last.
