The Cluttered Path

I planned my whole life out when I was 18 and NONE of it happened the way I drew it up. I'm 54 now: Former Marine Sergeant, engineer, tech sales guy, husband, dad, still in therapy, still working a corporate job, and still figuring this out. The Cluttered Path is the conversation I wish someone had with me at age 28. Career advice that isn't LinkedIn nonsense. Money talk without the crypto bros. Mental health without the eye-rolling. Faith without self-righteousness. Leadership lessons from a guy who's made ALL the mistakes so you don't have to. If your dad wasn't around, wasn't the talking type, or just couldn't relate to the world you live in, pull up a chair.

#41 - "Preacher to Breacher" | Eric Robinson on Faith, Brotherhood, and the Cost of Getting it Right

Send us Fan MailEric Robinson was a pastor who planted a church in his twenties, built it to 200 people, and gave himself daily stress headaches for years because he didn’t think a pastor was allowed to need help. So he left the pastorate and joined the FBI at 32, having never fired a gun, to lower his stress. It worked!!This is a Brotherhood & Faith episode, and Eric has lived both sides of it. He found brotherhood twice: in a church where men prayed together and on a SWAT team where they kicked in doors together. He’s blunt about which one felt more real. One wears a mask. The other one puts its body between you and a threat and never mentions it.We get into:Why he was the least-qualified guy in his FBI academy class at 32 — and why 12 years of ministry gave him a leg up on the cops and soldiers anywayHow you get a sex offender or a terrified 16-year-old to open up (it’s the same skill a pastor uses, and it’s not what you’d think)A SWAT operation two years ago that ended in a fatal shooting — 90 seconds that felt like five minutes, his heart rate at 178, and the teammate who wasn’t even there but still felt he’d let everyone downWhy men who don’t sit down and talk after hard things end up drinking, kicking the dog, or starting an actual riot — Todd’s got a Camp Lejeune story for that oneThe reexamination of faith that came from working domestic terrorism, and the moment his beliefs collided with his family — what he calls his "first blasphemy"Straight advice for a guy with no squad, no church, no mentor, and a Tuesday night to fillIf you’re a man who suspects you’re missing something you can’t name (the squad, the congregation, the table of older guys who’ve been there) this is the episode._____________________________________ 🎯 About Eric RobinsonEric Robinson is a retired FBI special agent with 24 years of service — white-collar crime, counterterrorism, crimes against children, gangs, drugs, and public corruption. He spent 15 years as a SWAT operator and served as a firearms and tactics instructor. Two of his cases won the Attorney General’s Award. Before the FBI, he spent 12 years in Christian ministry, including planting and pastoring a Baptist church in Western New York. #34 Todd Cowles | High School Dropout to Data & AI Architect

Send us Fan MailSome stories punch through the noise because they’re honest, messy, and hopeful. Todd Cowles grew up with absentee parents, learned hustle the hard way, and nearly derailed himself with bad friends and worse choices. Then a rival reached out, a mentor stepped in, and a new path opened. Service, leadership, and the painstaking work of building his own self worth. A single pivot sent Todd to college, into the Air Force, and eventually into the tech industry where he became a Data and AI Architect, and he now helps major corporate brands generate real outcomes fast.We talk about the inflection points that matter: volunteering under a United Way leader who modeled service, a chance to attend college that unlocked a love of learning, and battlefield nights in Baghdad that left scars and clarity. Todd shares candidly about PTSD, faith, and the practice of reparenting: learning to speak to your younger self with patience and strength. The conversation moves from street‑level survival to practical tools anyone can use to change their arc.On the tech side, Todd breaks down how a help desk job became a springboard to VMware, Splunk, SPSS, and Apache Spark, and why Databricks turned into a platform for impact. He details how AI serves as a force multiplier, compressing end‑to‑end data, ML, and app delivery from months to days. We explore why core skills like public speaking matter more than ever, and how AI has drastically decreased delivery times. This episode is a blueprint for midlife reinvention and professional growth: choose friends wisely, take the next courageous step, consult yourself out of a job, and be ready to reinvent every few years. #32 Paul Stryer: How to Cut Costs, Drama, and Stress | Minimalist Mindset

Send us Fan MailWhat if the problem isn’t that you need more… but that you’re carrying too much? In this episode of The Cluttered Path, Todd sits down with Paul Stryer, author of Living the Zero Life, to explore a radically different approach to minimalism, not about owning fewer things, but about releasing the emotional, financial, and psychological weight that quietly drains your life. Paul shares his real journey through divorce, overwhelming debt, corporate burnout, and the pressure of performing a life that looked successful but felt heavy. Out of that collapse came a philosophy he calls mental minimalism, the intentional subtraction of drama, unnecessary responsibility, and unsustainable cost of living in order to reclaim peace, clarity, and freedom. This conversation goes beyond surface-level self-help and into the deeper work of intentional living, simple living, and life design. It’s about understanding why “someday freedom” is a myth, why peace is built through subtraction, and how money, identity, relationships, and self-worth quietly intertwine beneath the noise. 🎧 In this episode, you’ll explore: Why minimalism starts in the mind, not the closet How emotional and financial clutter keep you stuck in survival mode The hidden cost of performing success instead of living in alignment Why doing less of the wrong things creates more freedom than doing more A practical framework for designing a lighter, calmer, more intentional life If your life looks good on the outside but feels expensive on the inside, this episode offers a grounded reminder: Freedom doesn’t come from adding more habits, goals, or hustle. It comes from letting go of what was never yours to carry in the first place. The cost of peace is zero.Where to Find Paul: Website: https://livingthezerolife.com Email: [email protected]  _____________________________________  Resources from This Episode:  Living the Zero Life, by Paul Stryer: https://urlgeni.us/amzn/FLrjFqThe Simple Path to Wealth, by JL Collins: https://urlgeni.us/amzn/PX6g2B As an Amazon Partner, our podcast earns from qualified purchases at no extra cost to you. ________________________________________________________________📫  Where to Find Us:Web: https://clutteredpath.com/Patreon: https://patreon.com/clutteredpath Questions/Comments:  [email protected] _________________________________________________________________🔥 Follow us on Social Media:YouTubeInstagramFacebookX (Formerly Twitter)TikTok

Send us Fan MailDuring WWII in war-torn Holland, a five-year-old watches Canadian soldiers hand out bread, butter, and cheese in a schoolyard. He decides that someday he will live in the land of his heroes. Decades later that child, John Brink, arrives in Canada with a suitcase, $25.47 in his pocket, and a desire to build his own company. What unfolds is a story of grit, passion, and the billion-dollar skill that changed everything: Communication. We sit down with John to explore his childhood in Nazi-Occupied Holland, PTSD, and years of academic struggles that evolved into a blueprint for confident speaking and leadership. He shares the identity shift that came with discovering ADHD and Dyslexia, and how naming his neurodiversity turned shame into a superpower. From a humiliating first experience speaking in public to becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster, John walks us through the habits that transformed panic into presence: study the room, master the tech, move with purpose, choose outlines over scripts, and focus on your audience. He also reveals why a little anxiety is useful, how empathy makes moments unforgettable, and what it looks like to go off-script to elevate someone else’s story. Along the way, we talk building lumber mills, writing books, and stepping on a bodybuilding stage in his 70s and 80s as a declaration that discipline scales across domains. If you care about public speaking, leadership, or simply finding your voice, you’ll leave with practical tactics and a deeper sense of what’s possible when you align attitude, passion, and work ethic with a clear message. Where to Connect With John Brink: Web: https://johnabrink.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JohnABrink _____________________________________  Resources from This Episode: Billion Dollar Communication Skills, by John A Brink  https://amzn.to/3K6RpLYAgainst All Odds, by John A Brink https://amzn.to/4r3CQtlLiving Young, Dying Old, by John A Brink https://amzn.to/4r0I88OAs an Amazon Partner, our podcast earns from qualified purchases at no extra cost to you. ________________________________________________________________📫  Where to Find Us:Web: https://clutteredpath.com/Patreon: https://patreon.com/clutteredpath Questions/Comments:  [email protected] _________________________________________________________________🔥 Follow us on Social Media:YouTubeInstagramFacebookX (Formerly Twitter)TikTok

#26 Jeff Callahan - Develop COMMUNICATION Skills to Supercharge Your Life and Career!

Send us Fan MailWhat if confidence doesn’t come from hype, but from training yourself? We sit down with communication coach Jeff Callahan to carve out a practical path from social anxiety to authentic connection that's built on reps, helpful self-talk, and simple frameworks anyone can use. As a child, Jeff’s story began with a severe stuttering problem but today he has a thriving coaching practice featured by Inc., Time, and Business Insider. The main lesson is to become competent at communicating, because competence breeds confidence. We dig into why so many adults feel behind on soft skills (years of technical focus, the rise of screens and algorithms, and the slow disappearance of third spaces) and how we can overcome deficiencies. Jeff shares a weekly audit to surface hidden micro-opportunities for practice, a method to stack small wins, and a mental model to replace harsh, inaccurate stories with neutral, helpful interpretations. You’ll also learn the “spokes” method to keep conversations flowing without memorized scripts. More reps = less pressure. The professional upside is real. Jeff explains how clearer self-advocacy can translate to raises, promotions, and leadership visibility, with an example of a client who landed a 10% salary bump and a path to promotion by refining his message. If you’ve ever felt isolated or stuck waiting to “feel ready,” this conversation provides a way forward: show up, practice small, choose helpful stories, and let confidence flow out of your competence. Resources From Jeff: Email: [email protected] 56 Minute Training on Group Conversations: https://www.becomemorecompelling.com/group Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/becomemorecompelling ________________________________________________________________📫  Where to Find Us:Web: https://clutteredpath.com/Patreon: https://patreon.com/clutteredpath Questions/Comments:  [email protected] _________________________________________________________________🔥 Follow us on Social Media:YouTubeInstagramFacebookX (Formerly Twitter)TikTok

Ray Martin, award-winning business leader turned nomadic explorer, discovered that his greatest achievement wasn't building a successful company — it was finding the courage to walk away from it all and build something better. In this transformative conversation, Ray reveals how a planned six-month sabbatical unexpectedly turned into a 14-year journey living out of nothing but a backpack. After winning "Business Leader of the Year" at 42, Ray faced a series of personal crises — divorce, his father's death, and having to sell his company — that forced him to confront the uncomfortable truth that he was "living someone else's life." What followed was a remarkable odyssey of self-discovery across Asia that completely transformed his relationship with success, purpose, and happiness. The turning point came during a 10-day silent meditation retreat in a Buddhist monastery, where Ray experienced a profound mental shift that allowed him to separate himself from the constant "noise" of his thinking mind. This newfound clarity inspired him to train for marathons, eventually completing five (including New York) and raising approximately $50,000 for causes including elephant sanctuaries and Nepalese orphanages. Ray shares practical wisdom about using what he calls "confirmation signals" to navigate life decisions, creating a personal dashboard of values, vision, and purpose, and the crucial shift from an outside-in to inside-out orientation to happiness. His journey illustrates that true fulfillment comes not from external achievements but from aligning our actions with our deepest values. Whether you're feeling trapped in your career, questioning your path, or simply curious about alternative approaches to finding meaning, Ray's story offers both inspiration and practical guidance for anyone brave enough to pursue their authentic path. #24 Andrew Profaci - Lessons From a Cult Survivor

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we delve into Andrew Profaci's incredible escape from the notorious Love Has Won cult, revealing the darkest corners of psychological manipulation and leading to the illuminating light of truth. As Amy Carlson's closest companion, Andrew witnessed firsthand how cult leaders exploit vulnerabilities through powerful psychological control, transforming ordinary individuals into devoted followers. What makes Andrew's story compelling goes beyond sensational headlines featured on Dateline, HBO, and Vice; it encapsulates a universal human struggle with vulnerability and belief systems. His tumultuous childhood experiences left him susceptible to the cult's seductive allure. After a tragic car accident at 18 claimed his friend's life and led to his own opioid addiction, profound spiritual questions emerged—serving as an unexpected gateway to a path he never anticipated. The pivotal moment of Andrew arriving at the cult’s house reveals shocking truths—encountering an incoherent, intoxicated woman instead of the charismatic leader he expected. Despite immediately recognizing red flags, he remained entangled in this web of deception. This tension between awareness and attachment forms the backbone of his narrative, culminating in his brave decision to expose a massive hoax from within and ultimately break free. Embark on this transformative journey through manipulation, resilience, and redemption with Andrew Profaci’s remarkable story. His memoir "The War on Love" provides deeper insights into these harrowing experiences while offering wisdom for anyone questioning their beliefs and seeking personal freedom.Where to Find Andrew: https://thewaronlove.com/ _____________________________________  Resources from This Episode: The War on Love: The Origin Story of Love Has Won and the rise of Mother God, by Andrew-Ryan Profaci https://urlgeni.us/amzn/1w20ENAs an Amazon Partner, our podcast earns from qualified purchases at no extra cost to you. ________________________________________________________________📫  Where to Find Us:Web: https://clutteredpath.com/Patreon: https://patreon.com/clutteredpath Questions/Comments:  [email protected] _________________________________________________________________🔥 Follow us on Social Media:YouTubeInstagramFacebookX (Formerly Twitter)TikTok

#23 Steve McCready - The Myths Keeping you STUCK in Mid-Life! A Psychotherapist Sets the Record Straight

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when a former therapy skeptic sits down with a licensed psychotherapist? Prepare for an eye-opening conversation that challenges everything you thought you knew about mental health support. Steve McCready, a licensed psychotherapist with a refreshingly practical approach, joins us to unpack why so many of us—particularly men—resist seeking help when we're struggling. From military boot camp experiences where vulnerability was publicly mocked to workplace cultures that reward self-sacrifice, we explore how our society has created dangerous misconceptions about mental health. At the heart of our discussion is the revelation that many of our struggles stem from the stories we tell ourselves. As Steve explains, "We build up these stories about ourselves that are often inaccurate." Whether you're a chronic adapter who's lost your identity pleasing others, an overthinker trapped in perfectionism, or someone battling relentless self-criticism, these patterns all connect to narratives you've developed about who you are and what you're capable of. The conversation takes fascinating turns as we explore the difference between therapy and coaching, why boundaries matter (and how to set them effectively), and why personal growth is necessarily messy. Steve's framework-based approach offers practical wisdom without rigid formulas, acknowledging that true change requires more than just understanding—it demands consistent practice that literally rewires your brain. If you've ever dismissed therapy as unnecessary or wondered why you keep hitting the same roadblocks despite knowing better, this conversation might be the perspective shift you need. Discover why vulnerability is strength, how to recognize distorted stories that limit your potential, and practical steps toward living more authentically. #22 Chris Wilkens - How to Start Building Wealth No Matter Your Age

Send us Fan MailAre your financial dreams feeling out of reach? What if I told you the secret isn't working harder or sacrificing more, but simply starting now and letting time do the heavy lifting? In this eye-opening conversation with Chris Wilkens, Vice President and Financial Advisor at RBC Wealth Management, we uncover practical strategies that can transform your financial future regardless of when you’re starting. Chris brings unique perspective as both a Marine Corps veteran who commanded troops in the Battle of Fallujah and as a wealth management professional dedicated to helping clients achieve financial freedom. The statistics are sobering: half of American households have no retirement savings whatsoever. But rather than focusing on the problem, Chris guides us through actionable solutions, explaining how compound interest works like magic for those who understand its power. Using the "Rule of 72," he demonstrates how your money can double every decade without you adding another penny. This isn't get-rich-quick nonsense; it's mathematical reality that too few people harness. Perhaps most powerfully, Chris reminds us that successful retirement isn't just about money—it's about purpose. "Retirement is easier if you have something to retire TO as opposed to retiring FROM something," he notes, explaining why even wealthy clients often continue in meaningful work after formal retirement. Whether you're playing catch-up with retirement savings or looking to optimize what you've already built, this conversation provides the compass you need to navigate the sometimes overwhelming world of personal finance. #21 Brandon Held - From Childhood Trauma, Poverty, and Divorce to a Life of Fulfillment

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when childhood trauma becomes your greatest teacher? Brandon Held's life story reads like a manual on resilience -- growing up in poverty, living with an abusive, alcoholic stepfather, losing his infant daughter, multiple failed marriages, surviving a suicide attempt, and emerging not just intact but mentally resilient and determined to help others. Brandon's candid conversation reveals how he broke generational cycles of addiction and abuse. His military service was a good starting point in life while also exposing him to leadership - both exemplary and toxic - that shaped his understanding of human connection. The most powerful moments come when Brandon discusses his relationships. After three failed marriages and numerous betrayals, he learned to establish boundaries and recognize genuine connection. This clarity came at a tremendous cost, including a suicide attempt following a devastating period where he simultaneously lost his wife, children, job, and home while burdened by crushing debt. Where to find Brandon: https://linktr.ee/brandonheld _____________________________________  Resources from This Episode: The Happiness Hypothesis, by Jonathan Haidt https://amzn.to/47ZSLzYAs an Amazon Partner, our podcast earns from qualified purchases at no extra cost to you.________________________________________________________________📫  Where to Find Us:Web: https://clutteredpath.com/Patreon: https://patreon.com/clutteredpath Questions/Comments:  [email protected] _________________________________________________________________🔥 Follow us on Social Media:YouTubeInstagramFacebookX (Formerly Twitter)TikTok

#19 The Pursuit of Happiness: Bad Idea or Worthy Goal?

Send us Fan MailWhy does a man with $2.1 trillion (five times Elon Musk's wealth) conclude that everything is "vanity and striving after wind"? King Solomon's ancient wisdom on happiness finds surprising validation in modern psychological research. We've put happiness on a pedestal as life's ultimate goal, but what if chasing it directly is actually counterproductive? This episode dives into fascinating research from Jonathan Haidt's "The Happiness Hypothesis" revealing why achievements often feel anticlimactic and why circumstances—both good and bad—have surprisingly little long-term effect on our happiness levels.Discover the scientific formula for happiness (H = S + C + V) and why your voluntary actions contribute a whopping 40% to your well-being while your circumstances account for just 10%. We explore the crucial difference between pleasures (which feel good momentarily) and gratifications (which engage us fully and create lasting satisfaction), and why "flow states" might be the secret to meaningful fulfillment. The conversation takes a provocative turn examining Buddha's philosophy of non-attachment. What if the enlightened one missed something crucial by never actually speaking with the suffering people he observed? Perhaps complete detachment isn't the answer—our greatest joys and deepest meaning come precisely from the connections that make us vulnerable to pain.Whether you're fascinated by ancient wisdom, modern psychology, or simply seeking a more meaningful approach to well-being, this episode offers valuable insights on living with purpose beyond the happiness trap. The Jurched in China make a political play to subjugate the Mongols but the Clans respond by declaring war. This story gives us an excellent primer on great leadership, with insight into the deliberative process the Mongols followed to plan for war.  When the Mongols march South into China, the Jurched mocked them, thinking there was no way the impoverished nation of Mongolia could beat them. They soon learned a hard lesson. The Mongols engage in a masterful campaign that involves psychological warfare followed by simultaneous military strikes across the region to create the most confusion and chaos. At this point, Temujin is faced with a monumental life decision: Should he accept his situation and build a new life, or should he fight the Merkid with hopes of rescuing his bride?  We get some insight into the religious beliefs of Temujin that was the foundation of all that he did. ABOUT THIS SHOW
