A common reason for estrangement comes from a surprising place… when the mother tries to help their child or their spouse around the house. What is intended as support and help results in a text message telling them they overstepped, intruded or otherwise violated a boundary. And all of a sudden, they have less access to watch the grandchildren or perhaps they get cut off from their child and their family completely. Estrangement Oriented Manipulation. Also called EOM. Maybe you have never heard of that term before, but even if you haven’t heard of it before, it might be impacting your family. EOM is a pattern of dysfunctional behavior, often seen in daughters in law who drive estrangements between adult sons and their parents. It can happen with sons in law as well, but right now, there is an epidemic within the epidemic of estrangement. One where the woman who married your son believes she needs to isolate him to secure her position of power. This is not all daughters in law. Some are a true blessing. And it also doesn’t mean you have nothing to work on to repair the relationship. But recognizing EOM is a first step in knowing how to navigate the situation wisely, and in a way that aligns with God’s will and helps you reconnect with your son, grandchildren and yes… even your daughter in law. Deliverance from estrangement can happen all at once and stay steadily moving forward in an upward direction. But often, it’s not linear. It’s messy, and sometimes that messiness can cause you to wonder if you’ve done something wrong or messed everything up.
