Hosts Brett and Perry seek to equip you with the tools to elevate your fatherhood game through honest conversations about their own walks as fathers and interviews with a wide range of experts and guests. 83. Protecting Your Kids from Online Threats, with Christian Stanley
The Internet, if not handled properly within our families, poses a significant risk to our kids. It is the primary place where predators lurk in the shadows, grooming vulnerable kids for sex trafficking and exposing them to pornography. And it happens from an early age, earlier than most of us parents realize. To help us navigate the potential pitfalls of Internet misuse by our kids and predatory practices by those who would seek to harm our children, we are joined in this episode by Christian Stanley, a missionary in the fight against human trafficking. While a big part of what Christian does is to help get kids out of dangerous situations once they're already being trafficked, the first line of defense is to help prevent kids from being trafficked in the first place -- and that starts at home. Open your mind and prepare your heart for this sobering conversation about the reality of the digital world that our kids are growing up in, and learn the warning signs and practical safeguards that we can put in place as fathers to protect our kids. 80. Role of a Father: Spiritual Head, with Pastor Dan DeMey
In this episode of the Faithful Fatherhood Podcast, Brett is joined by Pastor Dan DeMey of Shine Church to continue the series exploring the multifaceted role of the father, this time focusing on a father's role as the spiritual head of the household. They start by asking whether or not that is even a role that a father should play and unpack scriptures that seem to suggest it is. Interpreting exactly what that should look like is nuanced, however, and Dan brings a fresh and interesting perspective to the suggestion that the father should be the "head" of his family. I think a lot of men will feel a weight of pressure lifted after listening to this wide-ranging conversation and come away with a much clearer vision of the spiritual role he should play in his family -- and how. 77. Navigating Social Media with Your Teens, with Drew Kizer

Once introduced, it vies for our kids' attention and adds a layer of complexity as our teenagers are building relationships, forming their self-identity, and growing spiritually, intellectually, and physically. It's our job as fathers to help guide our kids through what Drew Kizer, guest in this episode, calls the "dangerous playground" of social media. But how? Join us for this wide-ranging and hugely important conversation as we discuss: The current state of social media and its influence on society and families At what age we should allow our kids access to smartphones and social media How to have healthy conversations with our teenagers about the potential dangers of social media, and how to help them use it in a life-giving way Our role as fathers in monitoring our kids' phone usage and restricting access if necessary What the Bible says about social media And more Drew also breaks down the elements of the P-A-C-T agreement that he recommends kids and parents implement with respect to their social media use. If smartphones and social media are a source of contention in your family, you're not alone. Fortunately, there are tools and mindsets to help you navigate this issue successfully. We cover them in this episode. About Our Guest Drew Kizer has been the pulpit minister at Ashville Road Baptist Church in Leeds, Alabama since 2000. He received a B.A. in Bible and a M.A. in New Testament from Freed-Hardeman University. In addition to his local work, Drew stays busy writing, podcasting, and speaking at lectureships, gospel meetings, and mission campaigns. His eleven-year battle with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease has given him perspective on how God gives strength through weakness. Drew likes to use his experience with chronic illness to help others who are in similar situations, especially those who suffer from PD. Drew and his wife, Julie, have two children, Ava and Jackson. Brett and Perry talk about how to handle the disappointment that comes from unmet expectations as they debrief their summer adventures and catch up on key happenings with their families. Yet, how we help our kids navigate disappointment is an important role of fathers. We trust that you'll be able to relate to the stories Brett and Perry share in this episode and take heart from the realization that you're not the only one to experience setbacks with your kids despite having the best of intentions. 74. Hurricane Happenings and Stretching Comfort Zones
Brett and Perry, both of whom live in areas deeply impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Helene, share their experiences of the storm itself, the tragedy they've witnessed first-hand, and their families' efforts to help those in need. They then shift the conversation to an internal conflict Perry is wrestling with regarding a work opportunity for his son JP. As fathers, how do we balance prudence and wisdom with expanding our comfort zones to allow our sons to grow into men? In this episode, we tackle some heavy issues with an eye toward setting a good example for our kids, being the hands and feet of Jesus, and recognizing that ultimately He is in control and it's on us to walk by faith. 73. Reconciling the Shadow Side of Legacy, with Dan Davis
In this final episode of our 3-part series on legacy, we're joined by Dan Davis, founder of Animate Mentoring, to discuss aspects of our lineage and character that we don't want to carry forward in our families and that we don't want to be part of our legacy moving forward. Dan explains that for all the good a person may exhibit, there's always a shadow side that must be dealt with as well. How can we break free from that shadow and turn it to light? If there are negative through-lines going back generations in our family, how can we say "this stops with me" and chart a different path for moving forward? Legacies are complicated, as we've discussed in previous episodes, and part of crafting a legacy that we can be proud of involves coming to terms with the less-glamorous shadow side of our nature. Dan's wisdom and insight from years of counseling men from all walks of life add important color to our conversation about legacy and will help you walk out the sometimes challenging task of leaving behind the harmful in pursuit of a meaningful, lasting legacy. About Our Guest Dan Davis is the founder and lead mentor at Animate Mentoring, which guides individuals and families so they can navigate life's transitions intentionally with wisdom and courage. After three decades of leading in the professional camping industry, Dan developed a keen sense of how important the relationship with a trusted mentor is. He saw firsthand how our modern society neglects mentoring through life’s most significant transitions, leaving many people lost and isolated. In 2020, Dan took a leap and launched Animate Mentoring so he and other team members can serve as guides through the stages of adolescence, parenthood, and mid-life passage, and provide direction and support so relationships can flourish as life changes over time. 72. Unfinished Business
Brett and Perry continue their discussion about Legacy by exploring the idea that we should begin something meaningful now that won't be completed in our lifetime. It opens up a conversation about King David and his son, King Solomon, and leads to a broader conversation about how to equip our kids to be better than we are in key areas. As we strive to leave a positive legacy for future generations, we trust that Part 2 of this Legacy series will challenge, motivate, and encourage you on your fatherhood journey. 71. What Makes for a Meaningful Legacy?
Legacies are complicated. We all leave one, whether good or bad. For those of us trying to leave an impactful, positive legacy in our families, how should we set about doing that? How much control do we really have over the ripple effect of our actions today on future generations? What does the Word teach us about legacy, and how does our time on Earth fit into God's eternal plans? It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of fatherhood and lose sight of the big picture. While our lives are but a vapor, according to the apostle James, they continue on through our kids, who are a big part of our legacy (Psalm 127). This episode is Part 1 of a series on "Legacy" where Brett and Perry begin to unpack important themes around legacy that may shift the way we think about our responsibilities as fathers in terms of our impact after we're gone. Our legacy matters, but perhaps not in the way you'd expect. 70. Hip-Hop, Faith, and Fatherhood, with Manny Digital
Music is the soundtrack to our lives, as Manny Montilla (aka Manny Digital) says in this episode of The Faithful Fatherhood Podcast. Good music can add color and flavor to our lives, provide commonality within a family, and enrich the human experience in meaningful ways. But what if the language and messaging in that music is questionable, explicit, or downright offensive? Should our kids be exposed to it? What is our role as father in filtering what our kids listen to? More broadly, how can we raise our kids to make life-giving choices on their own when it comes to the media they consume? These are questions without easy answers, but Manny sheds light on them as he shares a unique perspective having grown up around hip-hop culture in the Bronx and now raising kids who have an affinity for that same music while trying to balance faith and positive values. About Our Guest Manny "Digital" made his bones in The Bronx, NY. A son of Dominican immigrants, he grew up observing the pitfalls of his BX environment and carefully applied the lessons he picked up to set himself up for a better outcome. One of those lessons came from his personal experience as part of a broken home. He knew early on the importance of a father's presence and how setting clear expectations with his eventual children would be the most impactful element of building his family. Happiness. It sounds so enticing, so desirable. We want more happiness in our own lives, and we want our kids to be happy, too. Being a father is challenging, and sometimes happiness gets lost in the day-to-day stress and challenge of fatherhood. 65. The Heart of a Father: Give Good Gifts
It seems like a pretty simple idea: A father should desire to give good gifts to his kids. Jesus said as much in Matthew 7:9-11. Yet, it's not always that easy. There are some deeper issues here. Should we give our kids every "good gift" they ask for? Does our Heavenly Father actually give us everything we ask for, as scripture suggests? What should our heart position be toward our kids when they haven't earned the gifts they're asking for? What is the interplay between discipline and freedom, and how does it line up with what Jesus discloses about the heart of a father in these profound verses from his Sermon on the Mount? In this episode, Brett and Perry take a deep dive into several key verses from Matthew Chapters 6 & 7 that speak to God's heart for us, and how they translate to what our heart should be toward our own kids. We are instructed to "ask, seek, and knock" to received the blessings of our Heavenly Father. Do we believe that? And do our kids expect the same from us? There's a lot here, so buckle up and get ready to be challenged. As we're trying to be the best fathers we can be, the biblical truths discussed in this episode have the ability to move us further in that direction, if we'll internalize them.
