S4E5: A Small Woman, A Mighty God | The Story of Gladys Aylward

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Mike and Cody dive into the remarkable missionary story of Gladys Aylward. Gladys was a London housemaid with no formal education and no money, who was rejected by the mission agency she felt called to serve with after failing to meet its academic requirements. But her sense of calling to China never left her, and she found her own way there -- alone, with a train ticket she saved for herself and a resolve that carried her through war zones, detainment, and danger most of us can hardly imagine. What follows is a story of a life fully surrendered: an inn built to reach traveling muleteers with the gospel, an unlikely government job that opened doors most missionaries never got close to, and a family of orphaned children that grew far beyond what Gladys ever expected for herself. Mike and Cody trace her story all the way through the chaos of wartime China, and reflect on what her life teaches about calling, rejection, perseverance, and the kind of person God tends to use. Contact us at [email protected] Resources & Links:●       Gladys Aylward: My Missionary Life in China (Moody Publishers)  00:00 -- Cold Open: "How Could She Love Me? S4E4: Reaching the Unreachable | Ben Manthi

This episode of The Go and Send Podcast features Ben Manthi, a Kenyan engineer who traded a promising career in avionics for a life spent planting radio stations across Africa. Ben grew up in a Christian home, came to faith as a teenager, and spent years quietly serving behind the scenes -- running sound systems and helping with outreaches -- before God began closing doors in his technical career and opening one into full-time ministry with Diguna, a mission organization that has now helped plant more than 90 radio stations across the continent.Ben shares candidly about the fear and uncertainty of leaving a steady paycheck, the cultural challenges of raising support in Kenya, and the ways God provided again and again when the road ahead looked uncertain. At the heart of this conversation is the remarkable story of the Daasanach, a semi-nomadic, historically unreached people group in one of the most remote and inhospitable corners of northern Kenya. Ben walks through how a single radio station became a bridge -- not only bringing many Daasanach to faith, but helping birth an unlikely peace between rival tribes who have fought for generations. From there, Ben shares what's next: a growing effort to reach the Maasai people with the gospel in their own language and culture, and what he's learned about trusting God's timing after 17 years on the mission field.Contact us at [email protected] & Links:●       Diguna: https://www.diguna.de 00:00 -- Cold Open: "Unless the People Hear the Gospel, the World Will Not Change"00:33 -- Meet Ben Manthi: A Kenyan Engineer Turned Missionary01:12 -- Kenya's 25+ Unreached People Groups02:03 -- Why These Communities Are So Hard to Reach04:10 -- Christianity in Kenya: Breaking Down the Numbers05:57 -- Growing Up in a Christian Family Rooted in Church-Building06:32 -- Coming to Faith at Sixteen07:17 -- Serving Quietly While Sensing a Deeper Call08:37 -- Studying Electronics Engineering and Microprocessors10:14 -- What Drew Ben to Solving Technical Problems10:50 -- A Missionary Family Plants the First Seed11:41 -- Chasing a Dream in Avionics12:34 -- Watching God Quietly Close Doors13:00 -- The Persistent Missionaries Who Kept Inviting Him14:55 -- Praying Alongside Ben: "Lord, We Bring Benjamin to Your Hands"15:12 -- Wrestling With a Steady Paycheck vs. a Life of Faith17:15 -- Learning to Trust in the Lord With All His Heart19:13 -- Joining Diguna and Learning to Raise Support20:59 -- The Cultural Weight of Asking for Support in Kenya22:01 -- A Remarkable First Year of Provision25:02 -- Encouragement for Anyone Afraid to Raise Support26:39 -- When a Funding Source Ends and God Provides Again28:24 -- What Diguna Is and the Many Ministries It Runs30:34 -- Ben's Role Leading Radio Projects Across Africa32:21 -- How a Radio Station Gets Built, Step by Step33:52 -- Reflecting on 91 Radio Stations Planted35:13 -- His First Station Build in the Congo37:15 -- Introducing the Daasanach: An Unreached People of Northern Kenya39:38 -- A Semi-Nomadic People Facing Extreme Heat and Isolation42:27 -- Animism, Witchcraft, and a People Without the Living Lord43:13 -- Training Believers From the Community to Go on Air45:59 -- A Church Too Small for Its Growing Crowd48:02 -- Trading Guns for Bibles: A Peace Platform Between Rival Tribes49:38 -- Reaching the Maasai: 1.6 Million Strong53:07 -- Two Stations Licensed, Signal Reaching Into Tanzania55:04 -- Encouragement for Anyone Taking Their First Step of Faith55:56 -- The Great Commission and God's Promise to Provide57:47 -- Where to Learn More About Diguna To learn more about SonSet Solutions, go to our website or follow us on social media @SonSetSolutions.Website: https://www.sonsetsolutions.org

S4E3: A Love Worth Giving Everything For | Justie Wingfeld

This episode of The Go and Send Podcast features Justie Wingfeld, co-founder of Akonda Ministries in Malawi. Justie grew up watching her parents live out their faith, and a family friend's story of missionary sacrifice planted a desire in her heart at a young age to give her whole life for someone to know Jesus. She married her husband, Nathan, right out of high school, and the two always assumed missions would come "someday," once their kids were grown. God had other timing. A trip to Malawi turned into deep friendships, an unexpected calling, and a series of leaps of faith that reshaped their family's entire life -- including one remarkable story of God providing abundantly for a hospital they had no way of funding on their own. It's a story that spans from the ministry they never planned to start, to the way they chose to raise their kids along the way. Justie shares candid, faith-stretching stories about trusting God with her kids, her finances, and her family's future, along with practical encouragement for anyone wrestling with their own step of faith. S4E2: The Transmitter That Wouldn't Be Silenced | Dave Pasechnik

This episode of The Go and Send Podcast features Dave Pasechnik, a pioneer of Christian radio missions who has served the Lord for decades, traveled to over 70 countries, and helped plant hundreds of radio stations around the world. Dave's story starts on a farm in rural Canada with no electricity, where a battery-powered radio first sparked his curiosity about technology — and where he first heard gospel broadcasts beamed in from a station in Quito, Ecuador. That early spark set Dave on a remarkable path: Bible college, an unexpected job at the University of Alberta working on particle accelerators, and eventually a calling into missions with HCJB World Radio in Ecuador. There, he maintained massive shortwave transmitters and power systems, helped build a 500,000-watt transmitter designed to broadcast the gospel behind the Iron Curtain into the Soviet Union despite heavy jamming, and saw an entire village come to faith through a simple weekly Bible study. Dave later helped lead the HCJB Technology Center in Elkhart, Indiana, where his team built cutting-edge equipment that helped launch roughly 350 radio stations across the globe. In this conversation, he shares incredible stories of God's provision and timing — including a tense encounter with armed guards in post-revolution Romania — and offers hard-won wisdom on obedience, patience, and what it really means to step out in faith for the sake of the gospel. S4E1: Refugee to Radio Visionary | Joseph Kebbie

Season 4 of The Go and Send Podcast kicks off with a remarkable story of resilience, faith, and vision. Joseph Kebbie grew up as a pastor's kid in Foya, Liberia, until the Liberian Civil War tore through his childhood — forcing him, at just 12 years old, to flee across the border into Guinea and become a refugee. He witnessed unimaginable loss, including the deaths of his Sunday school teacher and a close family friend, and endured a harrowing river crossing to escape armed rebels. Out of that trauma, God began cultivating a vision in Joseph that would one day reach millions. After coming to personal faith in Christ and discovering a passion for media and radio, Joseph felt God's clear call to return home and start a radio ministry. What began as a single radio station broadcasting out of a shipping container — Vox Radio — has grown into a network of stations blanketing Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone with the gospel, and now a continent-wide broadcast reaching audiences across Africa through New Life Africa / Your Network of Praise. In this conversation, Joseph shares powerful testimonies of transformation, talks candidly about the spiritual opposition he's faced along the way, and offers heartfelt encouragement to anyone wrestling with a call to missions. This is a story about how God can take the most broken circumstances and use them to change the destiny of a nation. S3E8: Christ-like Innovation: What Missions Can Learn From Business | Ted Esler

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Ted Esler, President of Missio Nexus. Ted traded a thriving computer consultancy for the mission field after a single Sunday morning blew his world open — and that was just the beginning. He spent a decade with Pioneers in the Balkans, planting a church in post-war Bosnia among Serbs, Croats, and Bosnian Muslims, and has spent the years since leading one of North America's largest mission networks. Along the way, he's picked up a PhD, published a book on why mission agencies struggle to innovate, and never stopped coding. This conversation covers a lot of ground: why a third of the world still has no access to the gospel, how AI is about to close the Bible translation gap and simultaneously challenge our understanding of what it means to be human, and the story of a man named Milenko — a Serb wounded in the siege of Sarajevo — whose path to Jesus had nothing to do with programs or strategy. If you've ever wondered what it looks like to bring your skills, your career, and your curiosity into the Great Commission, Ted's story is a compelling place to start. S3E7: Faith, Fear, and God's Timing | Doug Weber

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Doug Weber, the Communications Team Leader at SonSet Solutions. Doug spent over two decades serving as a missionary with HCJB World Radio in Ecuador — using his electrical engineering background to keep shortwave transmitters on the air while he and his wife Ruth planted churches in the mountains outside of Quito. One of those nights, an angry mob threatened to burn them out. Only an unbelieving husband stood between them and the crowd — and that moment became a spiritual anchor Doug returned to through every hard season that followed.  He also shares two remarkable stories from his time at SonSet Solutions: A Christian radio station director in Africa who let Muslim imams advertise on his station and saw it lead people to Jesus, and 3,600 solar-powered radios held up for seven months by COVID, arriving in a Ugandan refugee camp at exactly the right moment. S3E6: How Technology Is Unlocking the Last Unreached Places on Earth | Yvonne Carlson

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Yvonne Carlson, a tech leader and digital missions pioneer who serves at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital discipleship, and global evangelism. Yvonne grew up as a third culture kid and spent years climbing the corporate ladder — until God tapped her on the shoulder at the Moody Church in Chicago and made clear she'd been trading kingdom work for the American dream. From launching a digital church at First Baptist Dallas, to doing investment work in the Middle East and North Africa, to now serving as a key leader at Global Media Outreach — Yvonne's journey is a masterclass in following God's leading one step at a time. She shares how GMO uses digital advertising to reach people in closed countries who Google "how do I know Jesus?", what it looks like to disciple someone across a language barrier in Iran, and why she believes scripture will be available in every language by 2033. S3E5: Angels, Cannibals, Obedience | The Story of John Paton

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike dig into the remarkable story of John Paton, a 19th century Scottish missionary who sailed to the New Hebrides Islands — a chain of South Pacific islands so dangerous that sailors refused to go near them. The inhabitants were hostile to outsiders, steeped in witchcraft and tribal warfare, and known cannibals. Two missionaries had already been killed and eaten there just a decade before. John Paton went anyway. What followed was a life of staggering loss, constant danger, and undeniable divine protection — including a threat on his life and a supernatural deliverance. His faithfulness over decades helped transform an island nation that today is 91% Christian — more evangelical per capita than the United States. Cody and Mike also wrestle with the hard question this story raises alongside S3E1: why did God protect John Paton and allow John Allen Chau to die? And what does John Paton's life say to a Western church that has largely made peace with comfort? If you want your view of God stretched and your priorities challenged, this episode will do both. S3E4: From Selling Shampoo to Multiplying Churches | Michael Gutierrez

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Michael Gutierrez, VP of Finance at Multiplication Network. Michael's journey took him from a Catholic upbringing he walked away from, through a successful 16-year online business he built from scratch after 9/11, to a slow reconnection with Christ through his wife Jane — and eventually a call to leave it all behind for full-time ministry. It’s a remarkable story about surrender to God’s plans.  Michael shares how Multiplication Network is training national church planters across 70 countries — and why partnering with leaders already inside their cultures is one of the most effective and cost-efficient strategies in global missions today. He also shares the powerful story of woman whose miraculous healing, family rejection, and unwavering faith had a huge impact on her family. If you're asking the Lord what He wants from your career, your finances, or your future, Michael's story is a compelling reminder to hold your plans with an open hand. S3E3: Getting God's Word to Those Who've Never Heard It | Naomi Frizzell

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Naomi Frizzell, President and CEO of Audio Scripture Ministries. Naomi's journey took her from dreaming of being a foreign correspondent for CBS News, to leading communications for the Lausanne Movement and Our Daily Bread Ministries, to now overseeing a global ministry that records and distributes God's Word in the heart languages of the least reached people on earth. Along the way, she lost her voice for six months following a ministry trip — and what God taught her in that silence became one of the most defining seasons of her life. This conversation is full of remarkable stories that will challenge your faith and expand your vision for global missions. Naomi shares how Audio Scripture Ministries is reaching unreached people groups, nomadic communities, and prisoners across Africa and beyond — placing God's Word in the hands of people who have never heard the gospel in their own language. If you care about the Great Commission, Bible translation, heart language ministry, or simply want to hear how God moves in impossible places, this episode is for you. S3E2: Creative Access: Using Your Skills to Go Where Others Can't | Michael Dubisz

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike sit down with Michael Dubisz, an electrical engineer and recent addition to the SonSet Solutions team. Michael spent five years teaching high school math, physics, and programming at a Christian school in a restricted-access country in South Asia — using his skills as an educator to gain entry into a place where traditional missionaries simply cannot go. He shares what it's really like to live and serve in a closed country and the quiet fruit of God transforming the lives of those around him by his faithful witness. This conversation digs into the concept of Creative Access Ministry — using professional skills like engineering, teaching, or business to open doors in unreached places — and honestly examines both its strengths and its challenges. If you've ever wondered whether your career could take you somewhere the gospel hasn't yet reached, Michael's story is a compelling answer. S3E1: The Man Who Wouldn't Turn Back | The Story of John Allen Chau

In this episode of The Go and Send Podcast, Cody and Mike dive into the remarkable and controversial story of John Allen Chau — a young missionary who attempted to bring the gospel to the Sentinelese people, one of the world's last uncontacted tribes living on North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal. From his adventurous upbringing in the Pacific Northwest to nine years of intense, methodical preparation, John's story is one of radical obedience, deep faith, and unyielding courage in the face of real danger. This conversation goes beyond the headlines to honestly wrestle with the hard questions John's story raises: Was it right to risk his life for the gospel? Does God's call override human law? How should Christians think about uncontacted peoples today? If you've ever wondered what it really means to take up your cross and follow Christ, this episode will challenge and convict you. Now back in the U.S., Steve and Becky minister to MKs through retreats, debriefing, hospitality, and their podcast Base Camp. This conversation offers valuable insight into the often-overlooked ministry of caring for missionary kids, the realities of raising a family overseas, and practical ways churches can support MKs and their families.  Contact us at [email protected] Resources & Links:Ethnos 360: https://ethnos360.org/BaseCamp podcast Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn’t Make Sense by Paul David TrippThird Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds by David Pollock & Ruth Van RekenPieces of Purple by Michelle PhoenixI Have to Be Perfect by Tim Sanford 00:00 – Intro: Meet Steve Swope and MK Care00:46 – What Is Missionary Kid Care?02:17 – Why MK Care Is Essential05:11 – Common Challenges Missionary Kids Face06:44 – MKs and Making Their Faith Their Own07:03 – Steve's Upbringing and Early Missions Influences09:31 – College at Moody Bible Institute11:03 – Becoming a Youth Pastor12:02 – Meeting Becky, a Missionary Kid from Bolivia13:07 – Discovering Pops and Aunt Bart's MK Hospitality Ministry15:20 – The Urbana Missions Conference That Changed Everything17:12 – Answering the Call to Bolivia18:05 – Moving to Bolivia as Associate Missionaries (1989)21:42 – Confirmation and Affirmation in Ministry24:24 – The Role of Community in Discovering God's Will25:08 – Trusting God with Your Desires (Psalm 37)27:02 – Returning for Teacher Certification and Missions Training30:00 – Back to Bolivia: Junior High Dorm Parents32:03 – Four Years of Pre-Field Training33:13 – The Challenges of Raising Support36:19 – God's Unexpected Provision37:17 – Arriving in Bolivia: Culture Shock and Adjustment40:30 – Daily Life on the Mission Field41:13 – Teaching at a Christian Boarding School in the Mountains43:41 – Heartbreak and Loss: Three Deaths in Three Years46:51 – Homesickness and Missing Family47:26 – Political Instability and Rising Crime48:37 – The Painful Closure of Their School50:18 – Transition to Santa Cruz Christian Learning Center52:34 – Looking Back: Relationships and God's Faithfulness55:10 – Raising Third Culture Kids: What Parents Should Know58:27 – Returning to the U.S. and Joining MK Care01:01:10 – The Struggle of Identity and Rest01:05:15 – How Churches Can Support Missionary Kids01:09:04 – Steve's Parkinson's Diagnosis and God's Grace01:14:05 – Encouragement for Those Considering Missions01:16:22 – Recommended Books on MKs and Third Culture Kids01:18:04 – Closing Thanks and Farewell To learn more about SonSet Solutions, go to our website or follow us on social media @SonSetSolutions.Website: https://www.sonsetsolutions.org

S2E7: The Space Engineer Called to Ministry | Eric Mock

Welcome to The Go and Send Podcast! In this episode, Eric Mock shares how God redirected his path from aerospace engineering and the space program to serving believers across the former Soviet Union with Slavic Gospel Association. Eric talks about the moment a colleague's question shattered his comfortable Christianity, the radical shift from managing aerospace programs to pastoring while overseeing ministries in 13 countries, and discovering that availability matters more than ability when God opens unexpected doors. This conversation includes honest reflections on preaching in freezing Ukrainian churches under fire, supporting national missionaries as tent-makers, working to make churches self-sustaining, and learning that God often strips away our dreams to give us His purpose. Eric shares practical wisdom about discipleship-focused ministry, trusting God when life is hard, and taking that first step even when you don't feel ready. If you're wondering how your skills could serve in missions or struggling with God's call, Eric's testimony will challenge you to walk through whatever door opens next. Contact us at [email protected] Resources & Links:Slavic Gospel Association: https://www.sga.orgEncountering Hope Podcast: https://www.sga.org/podcast/The Cup and the Glory by Dr. Greg HarrisTrusting God When Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges 00:00 -- Introduction to Eric Mock and Slavic Gospel Association01:16 -- SGA History: Founded in 1934 and Broadcasting the Bible04:24 -- Training Students and Serving 6,000 Churches07:20 -- Connection With HCJB and Voice of the Andes09:26 -- The War in Ukraine and SGA's Response13:00 -- Making Churches Centers of Hope: 2.2 Million Heard Gospel18:30 -- They Don't Attend Church, They ARE the Church21:03 -- Growing Up Wanting to Be an Astronaut23:22 -- Working on Stealth Bomber, F-22, and Space Station25:54 -- Colleague's Question That Changed Everything27:48 -- Conversion: "I Want to Be More Like Jesus"30:03 -- First Mission Trip: Wife Chooses Siberia Over Peru33:00 -- Joining SGA and Taking a 65% Pay Cut33:39 -- Planting a Church in Small Village 17 Years Ago35:20 -- Traveling 1/3 of the Year to Serve Churches36:25 -- Teaching Pastors and Visiting Front Lines40:14 -- Preaching in 25-Degree Church With Tank Outside42:36 -- Pastoring While Traveling: Learning From Overseas Churches43:52 -- Discipleship Over Programs and Processes46:29 -- Next Man Up Mentality From Ukrainian Believers49:20 -- Never Imagined Going Into Ministry51:35 -- First Time Preaching: 650 People With No Preparation54:28 -- Seminary Students Missing the Point54:55 -- It's Not Your Ability, It's Your Availability56:24 -- Woman Asked: "Did God Bring You to Plant a Church?"58:12 -- Goal: Work Ourselves Out of a Job01:00:09 -- Supporting 394 National Missionaries as Tent-makers01:04:17 -- Overcoming Fear and Trusting God's Grace01:08:55 -- Encouragement to the Next Generation01:10:26 -- Test the Waters and Find Your Giftedness01:13:28 -- Preach Truth When Sky Is Blue, Not When It's Dark01:14:43 -- Book Recommendations and SGA Resources To learn more about SonSet Solutions, go to our website or follow us on social media @SonSetSolutions.Website: https://www.sonsetsolutions.org

S2E4: From Park Ranger to Pioneer Missionary | Brad Shaw

Welcome to The Go and Send Podcast! In this episode, Brad Shaw shares how God redirected his path from studying biology and working as a park ranger in Alaska to becoming a pioneer missionary among the Quechua people in Peru's Cotahuasi Canyon. Brad walks through his college years wrestling with atheistic professors, a supernatural moment when Scripture suddenly made sense, and a weekend gospel trip to an Alaskan village that changed everything. He talks about learning medical skills as a physician assistant, partnering with Quechua believers to reach isolated mountain communities, and watching God open doors for both FM and shortwave radio ministry that now reaches potentially millions across the Andes Mountains. This conversation includes honest reflections on cross-cultural ministry challenges, the importance of theological clarity in syncretistic contexts, persevering through five-year waiting periods for licenses, and trusting God's sovereignty through technical breakdowns and rural isolation. Brad shares practical encouragement about being faithful in small things, pursuing generalist skills, and filtering decisions through an eternal perspective. If you're wondering how God might use your background in missions or what pioneer ministry actually looks like day-to-day, this episode will challenge you to trust God's leading and make your life count for eternity. Contact us at [email protected] Resources & Links:Quechua Missions website: https://www.quechuamissions.comSIM (Serving In Mission): https://www.sim.orgContact Brad: [email protected] 00:00 -- Introduction to Brad Shaw and Ministry Among the Quechua01:08 -- The Cotahuasi Canyon and Quechua People04:29 -- Growing Up With Christian Grandparents06:09 -- University Ministry and Wrestling With Science Professors08:36 -- Supernatural Moment: The Bible Becoming Clear14:27 -- God Big Enough to Handle Doubts and Filter Through Eternal Perspective18:22 -- Working as Park Rangers in Alaska19:22 -- A Weekend Gospel Trip That Changed Everything22:24 -- Leaving Environmental Work for Long-Term Missions24:58 -- Training as a Physician Assistant for Healthcare Ministry28:06 -- Short-Term Trips and Learning About Cross-Cultural Ministry31:09 -- Importance of Being Involved in Local Church34:24 -- Discovering Peru and the Quechua People36:22 -- First Visit to Cotahuasi Canyon: Everything Fit Like a Glove39:08 -- Early Days Partnering With Quechua Believers41:03 -- Showing Jesus Film and Trekking Into Villages43:18 -- Vision to Reach 17,000 People in 50 Remote Villages44:43 -- Pursuing FM Radio License: Five-Year Process47:02 -- Learning Contentment and Perseverance Through Challenges49:46 -- Discovering Shortwave Radio to Reach Millions50:40 -- How FM vs. Shortwave Radio Works52:41 -- Installing Shortwave With Sonset Solutions53:28 -- Signal Reaching Iceland and Asia56:47 -- Typical Day: Morning Devotions and Ministry Center Life58:45 -- Evening Discipleship Groups and Village Church Meetings01:00:32 -- Were the Quechua a Reached People Group?01:02:42 -- Confronting Syncretism and Works-Oriented False Gospels01:04:39 -- Vision for Bible Institute by the Air01:05:41 -- Story of Faustino Teaching Himself to Read With the Bible01:09:17 -- Encouragement: Be Faithful in Small Things and Pursue God To learn more about SonSet Solutions, go to our website or follow us on social media @SonSetSolutions.Website: https://www.sonsetsolutions.org
